Hey all,

Long time no talk. Been up to my eyeballs in stuff for the last couple weeks, so I’ve been slacking, but I’m back.

I’ve got no idea what’s going on with the market, but I’ve heard from some carrier friends that things are decent out there, you tell me.

I’m hoping for my carrier friend’s sake that the market starts to turn. I know there’s a lot of companies struggling out there and it’s been a years-long struggle, so an end to that wouldn’t be so bad. But we all know how that goes.

Anywho, we’ve got some good events coming up in the Discord that you’ll find out about below. Tech Bro Tuesday is still going strong, I have some Arena events in the works that will be very big, but take time, and Freight Gong Friday is still going strong as well.

What’s going on people? Hope it’s been a good week for you.

Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day AKA the Allied invasion of Normandy during WWII.

With hundreds of ships, hundreds of thousands of soldiers plus all the food and supplies to power the force, the logistics required to pull of this invasion was pretty staggering in scale.

It’s wild that a handful of the brave souls who were there that day are still with us.

Some Thoughts

I’m going into hibernation mode now from a travel/social standpoint as my wife and I are about to welcome our 2nd daughter in June.

It will be nice to not travel for a while tbh!

I’m ready for a little focus time at home. When you’re on the road it’s pretty easy to rationalize not getting things done. So now that I can’t go on the road I basically have to confront the tasks I don’t want to.

Anywho, hope you all are well.

Some Thoughts

I had a great week at the TIA conference last week. As always, it’s fun meeting folks you’ve only ever interacted with online.

I think this was a top 3 event for me in the last year. It was at a great venue, to start. But I think the main thing was the booth time was limited. They only opened the booth expo area in the late afternoon on Thursday and Friday and they opened the bar at the same time which resulted in a very social booth atmosphere. I thought it was good.

I remain bullish on my friends over at Genlogs as I got a little bit more of a peek at what they’re working on. Check them out if you haven’t.

Besides that I didn’t really see much tech that was surprising or out of the ordinary.

This was my last conference for a while, as I’ve got my second daughter arriving sometime in June, so I’ll be occupied.

Next week is the Broker Carrier Summit in Kansas City. I won’t be there, but I know a lot of people will and I’m sure it’ll be a good time.

Our friends at Truck Parking Club are even offering free truck parking to the drivers who attend!

Anywho, I’ll resume going to shows in the fall, likely!

🧠 Some Thoughts: “Relationships”

Writing anything about relationships will get you lots of engagement on LinkedIn, especially when talking about broker/carrier relationships.

Often brokers will say they’d prefer to pay a relationship carrier more on a load than a new carrier. This makes sense given the risks associated with booking brand new carriers these days.

I was talking to my friend and LOST FR8 customer Van Gearing last week about broker/carrier relationships from his perspective as an owner op. Having been a carrier rep for ~5 years, I have experience working with owner ops and am still friends with a few that I booked with.

We recorded the conversation and I’m sharing it in the hopes that we can get him hooked up with some brokers looking to work together beyond just one load!

Last week I wrote a bit about why you should post online. After MATS, my opinions on the matter have only gotten stronger.

Last year, we hung out in a crew of about 10 people.

This year, there were too many friends to count, a true testament to befriending people online.

I wrote a little post last week on LinkedIn because it’s been about 2 years since I was laid off from my job at Trimble.

Pretty crazy it’s been 2 years, as so much has happened. But I just wanted to focus in on one thing that’s made it all possible: posting.

I can’t emphasize enough how much posting/writing online has done for me.

This newsletter, posting on Linkedin/Twitter, etc. have basically provided me every opportunity. It’s how I’ve met all our lostfr8.com customers, it’s how I originally met my co-founder Jake, it’s how I’ve met many of my current friends.

I would encourage everyone out there to start posting content in some capacity. It doesn’t have to be memes or shitposts like I tend to do. You need to find what works for you.

You can find customers, you can find friends, you can find cofounders, you can find a new job. I guarantee you you can find just about anything if you engage for long enough online.

Anywho, that’s it for now, onto some other stuff.

DAT went down yesterday which of course leads to everyone posting about it online.

It got me thinking about load boards in general and I’d like your feedback. So reply to this if you feel so inclined.

I’ve talked to tons of brokers and carriers about load boards.

More often than not the conversation revolves around how dissatisfied they are with the #1 load board (you know who).

Fraud (obviously) comes up as a top reason for that dissatisfaction. But I’m curious if there are other common issues that I’m missing (see poll below, reply to this email if I’m missing one).

The thing is, building a load board isn’t the hard part. The hard part is building the network. The incumbent load boards are very difficult to disrupt for that reason.

When push comes to shove, is there even enough will amongst brokers/carriers to switch to a new load board, even if the issues were solved? Let me know

🧠 Some Thoughts

I’ve spent the last couple days at TPM24 with the Gnosis Freight team.

The journey started with an RV trip from Scottsdale → Palm Springs → Long Beach.

It’s always fun to be in close quarters with a group of guys many years into the journey. You can learn a lot about people in this setting.

Austin, the Gnosis CEO has not done much content talking about their journey so far and where they’re going, but I’m going to work on something with him to help tell the story.

The fact that they’ve grown to the point they’re at without much publicity just goes to show there is more than one growth path to take.

It’s very fashionable to ‘build in public’ these days. I’ve obviously leaned into being more public than most and active on most socials. But depending on your business/personality it might make sense to take a different approach.

This week at Freight Caviar: California authorities closed a 100-mile stretch of I-80, linking Reno and Sacramento, due to "spin-outs, high winds, and low visibility." The closure, from the California-Nevada border west of Reno to near Emigrant Gap, California, lacks an estimated reopening time.

🧠 Some Thoughts

I’ve started writing more notes for myself during the week and I figured I’d share some tidbits of that here.

You should probably be sharing your thoughts online.

I know, it’s hard cuz it feels weird and you open yourself up to criticism and potentially (likely) being cringe.

I used to say to myself stuff like “no one will want to read what I have to say”. That’s definitely true when you start, but I don’t think that’s a good reason to stop yourself.

If you give it a shot and stick with it, you’ll be shocked when people start to reach out referencing something you posted. It’s pretty cool.

Anywho, let’s keep going.
