This Week’s Thoughts

Have you ever heard the old quote, “Excuses are like assholes. Everyone has one, and they all stink.”

I think about this quote often when I try to justify a mistake.

Didn’t call the leads.
Forgot to submit a report.
Behind on my taxes.
New books are staking up.

It is part of life, we live with ambition yet are measured only by our results.

Action is the great equalizer between the common man and the elite.

Insight as I toil with the daily pressure I stack up on myself looks like this…

Make a list of tasks- paper, digital or mental, Start the list, Don’t finish it ever, Start a new list, Repeat til I die.

I am a ferocious list maker, and the lists just never end…So I live with this open-ended feeling of never getting it all done, so I make an excuse.

I am learning to stop making excuses, as that activity is justifying the mistake.

When you justify you are not accepting that you need do better…which nothing can evolve from that wold.

When you acknowledge it, you can make a subconscious plan to improve.

No one wants to be wrong, or feel guilt or doubt…but if you are always justified for poor results due to stating circumstances outside your control you will never take steps to implement a process for change.

I am beyond proud, but also have to be humble enough to recognize when things are not optimal.

I am improving yet still make mistakes constantly in social circles, business, family, etc…things that are really important.

Today, I am starting to just acknowledge it - I screwed up. I will do better the next time, and keep moving.

Guess what…I sometimes make the same mistake again, and then once more, I acknowledge it, make a plan to improve and carry on.

In Japan, there is a concept known as ‘Wabi-sabi.’ Which means embracing imperfection and accepting that we can be a valuable and beautiful person despite any flaws we may have.

I am not a huge Japanese culture buff, but this one made me feel right at home.

So, let’s make a plan - No more excuses, just acceptance, and then get after it.

This Week’s Thoughts

The more you move, grow, act, react, sell, dial, work…The more people you are going to talk to, and thus the more feedback you are going to get.

Feedback from leads, buyers, clients, colleagues, mentors, idiots…Everyone has an opinion, and your job is to decide which one serves your goals.

Do I trust my gut?
Do I throw in the towel?
Do I dial through my leads one more time?
Do I pivot now, or when it gets harder, or after 6 months and no profit?

Just a small sample of the questions you are going to ask yourself on the road to success…I would say though, the number one thing you should do, is trust your educated self, and stick to your plan until you are dead-certain that the one you are on is broken.

This reminds me of a short parable I heard a few years ago about the donkey and the tiger that gave me a ton of clarity…quick read:

The Donkey said to the Tiger, “The grass is blue.”

The Tiger replied, “No, the grass is green.”

The discussion heated up and the two decided to go before the Lion, the King of the jungle.

The Donkey began to shout, “Your highness, is it true that the grass is blue?”

The Lion replied, “If you believe that it’s true, then the grass is blue.”

The Donkey continued, “The Tiger disagrees with me, contradicts and annoys me. Please punish him.”

The King declared, “The Tiger will be punished with five years of silence.”

The Donkey jumped cheerfully and went on his way.

The Tiger accepted his punishment, but before he left he asked the Lion, “Why have you punished me? After all, the grass is green.”

The Lion replied, “In fact, the grass is green.”

The Tiger asked, “So, why are you punishing me?”

The Lion replied, “That has nothing to do with the question of whether or not the grass is blue or green. The punishment is because it is not logical for an intelligent creature like you to waste time arguing with a donkey…and on top of that, come and bother me with a question like that. The worst waste of time is arguing with the fool who does not care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions.”

The Moral: There are people who, no matter how much evidence you present to them, are not ever going to understand you and are blinded by their own ego, hatred and resentment… and the hole in their heart that is only filled by always having to be right.

One of the most basic principles of success is to maintain a high teachability index — that is to remain teachable and coachable.

You’ll find that the most successful people are always open to improvement…

Don’t get caught in the trap of arguing with those committed to misunderstanding you.

Identify when this is happening and then re-evalute your circle, and keep moving.

Your heart hurts when you love someone.

Everything hurts when you lose someone.

I have been thinking a lot about how tough people push through pain.

Personal development coach, Dave Anderson told me once about how in the car on the way to a very important speaking engagement he found out that his brother had died…He made the decision that he had to push through the pain of the moment as nothing he could do then would have changed the situation and that he had made a commitment to his company that he was not going to break.

The level of pain he must have been feeling walking onto that stage would have to have been nearly unbearable, but his work was coaching and his clients in that moment had paid for his best and he was not going to let them down despite what was happening in his personal life.

I think we all have been hurt and endured pain throughout our life, and have been defined by our response to it.

I have lost so many family members, I have lost businesses, I have lost relationships…yet here I stand-progressing.

I have children and wife now that need me to be strong…What do you have in your life that needs you?

Thats where the pain can fuel you, and push you to rise up for them and keep talking steps forward to accomplish what you planned on day 1.

The problem with most entrepreneurs is they have choice: if it was a good week or a bad week- choice allows them to double down and go harder or give themselves an unearned break and believe that they can fill in the production gap next week.

Another way I heard this described is, entrepreneurs can say, “I just don’t feel like it” - Today is an off day, and tomorrow will be better, so I’ll nestle down in the couch and call this needed mental therapy.

The reality is, the only way we can get through a rut is to keep driving through it- no one accomplished anything staying stuck in the mud.

So whatever you are going through, pain, hurt, loss- Keep moving forward. Slow progress, is still progress.

You need you, and whoever is watching you needs you too- You give them hope for the better life you all want.

In the beginning of anything we need to believe in someone else’s belief in us, especially when we do not yet see it in ourselves.

Hurt. Stress. Pain. Growth.

You will get stronger.

Do you ever step back and praise yourself for all the madness you deal with?

As I speed up in life I will often imagine I am looking down on myself from a birds-eye view and watch as I manage all the the nuances life is throwing at me.

Grady, how are you doing? “Always good” is always my response.

How: I compartmentalize and move fast, whether it is work, family, fitness, or future…I make a decision and go.

Over the years I have watched other successful people juggle and win:

• What do they do first?

• How do they start their day?

• How do they take phone calls?

• Do they text back immediately or wait an hour, day, never…

I have adapted their habits into my life and now I am able to accomplish more, and still have time to do what I want…It is a balance that took practice to create.

When looking at business building activities, I have to decide is this something I need to do, start, or advance.

I often ignore important things I need to do if it will not hurt me, so I can start or advance something else.

Why: I need to find out if a new project has legs, if its actually viable and can make money, and most importantly if I can trust my new partner. High quality partnerships is the cheat code for mass accomplishment.

The majority of the time I choose to start or advance something to get the idea into my subconscious so my brain can start working on it in the background while I am doing other projects…A secret I am sharing with you {{First Name|now}}.

It is always a battle between time and goals however this is a belief that I live by:

“Successful people make decisions fast.”

I used to dwell, and ponder, and ask other people for insight on decisions that were not that big of a deal...and it would always delay the action of whatever needed to get done- large or small decisions, and thus the result.

You are all super sharp, with great intuition and a strong gut feeling...trust yourself.

As soon as you are presented with something that needs a decision or item to be acted upon...Go with your first instinct immediately and move on.

Will you always be 100% right? No.

But the majority of time you will be right, and that will compound over time = compounded winning.

The real value is this- you will be 100’s of positive decisions ahead of the person still dwelling on item #1.

Let’s be honest- Most people do not have your back, it is common man thinking to believe they do.

They have their own back, will work tirelessly to advance themselves, and sadly will sell you out to the boss in 2.5 seconds for a chance to earn brownie points.

However, do not spite them for their selfish ambition, simply be frustrated you gave away your trust so easily in the first place- and do not do it again.

The whole premise of The Uncommon Journal is to contradict our flawed ideology, and focus on how to be strong in a world that is constantly testing our strength.

Who can you trust {{First Name|these days}}?

• Trust your family.

• Trust your friends who have always been there for you.

• Trust people who always tell the truth no matter what.

• Trust the people who embody how you want to live.

As life goes on, I am unfourtunately seeing more infidelity than my adolescent self ever could have believed existed. Ponder this- If someone will cheat on their spouse and the parent of their children - how loyal do you think they will be to you in business?

Choose your business partners wisely.

I heard a story once from a buddy was trying to quit drinking, and his friend who did not care that he was trying to give up alcohol, kept pushing, “Just have one with me…just one…for old times’ sake.” A friend who is pushing you to go against what you want to achieve is not a friend, but a thief. Someone who is robbing you of your potential- This is not someone you can trust.

Trust people who want what is best for you, not matter how it affects them.

Been looking at life different lately as it seems the circles we keep are getting smaller, and the inside is not always the place to be.

So for now- Trust yourself, your gut, and your heart…and if you get stabbed in the back, just smile and do not let them see your tears- Strong people never reveal a tell on their next move.

Because once a rat shows you their cards, you will always know how to play them.

Control your emotions. Control your world.

Stay Smart.
Stay Strong.
Stay Positive.

This Week’s Thoughts

The airport where I live just hit 100 degrees- and now, the locals are starting to swarm CVS for spray sunscreen which I have heard officially marks the beginning of summer.

I often think of my childhood each time summer starts and memories of riding bikes to 7/11, eating fresh picked oranges with my sister and building a treehouse with my dad come flooding back- Great memories that I can only hope resemble what my kids will think about when they have a family of their own.

Today, summer for me is different…I am cursed with aspiration, so all I can think about is getting ahead. Whether it’s getting more fit, starting another business, buying another rental, or creating the next best recruiting tool for my company…Summer is my time to leap ahead.

Yes, society says vacation, travel, swim, bbq…and I do that, but I also don’t turn the engine off, ever. Sometimes it stresses me out, that I just can’t go golf, or binge watch Netflix, or have total peace on a day date with my wife…I am always thinking about my next project, and it’s not necessarily about making more money, it’s creating and building something memorable that keeps me up at night - Are any of you like this? Its ok if you aren’t and it’s ok if you are.

I have learned that people will commonly take the path of least resistance, and they will settle into what they justify. I just tend to justify progress over being content.

My true love for summer, is how you can get up at 5AM and the sun is out already, how you can push hard while people are out of town, and how you can expand when society is telling you to contract.

For me, the thought of endless summer, only comes after endless sacrifice. Seen the movie?

I won’t be like this forever, and you don’t have to either, just today… push yourself, get ahead, win for you and for everyone counting on you.

We are surfing through an ocean of opportunity, and while my kids are watching - I want them to remember, dad worked hard and dad was awesome.

“Sales is the art of converting words into money.” - Mark Hoverson

I have come to realize that everything we want in life comes at the end of a transaction.

We are aroused by the desire for an experience or an item, and then a decision needs to be made: Do it or Buy it.

To do it, we need ability…but to buy it, we need money.

Money is often the gatekeeper for escalation through the hierarchy of life.

How do we get more money? The fastest and most efficient way I have come to believe we get more is by selling something- A product or a service.

Something that removes pain or gives pleasure.

My early mentor, Mark Hoverson (RIP), used to sell pleasure - “The bore of your mundane life can be filled with the wonderment of travel and whimsical adventure while dancing on the beach at sunset and skiing on fresh powder in Switzerland.“

Mark had a high ticket travel package that he would sell for $5k giving you access to the most exclusive resorts & private celebrity hideaways at the internet’s best prices…Only accessible through his uber-exclusive travel package. He sold them like crazy and paid a healthy $3k affiliate commission to the referrer.

He would talk about the power of Fast Big Commissions(FBC’s) being able to quickly change someone's life. If you were to sell a few of those a month, you are on a fast track to replacing your job income with entrepreneur income. He was able to turn his customers into his best affiliates, because if you referred two people you would have your investment back plus $1K for plane flights.

Mark was a wizard with words- said to have read over 1,000 books, a devout man of faith, father of four and over-the-world in love with his wife, Shannon. I am forever grateful for the time I had with him early in life.

One of his best trainings is called, Executive Communication, I found a copy of it a few years back and grabbed it before it was lost forever. If you are a business owner, you will love it- here.

Reflecting now, I can see how this youthful framing pushed me to fall in love with my career in insurance sales later in life…FBC’s create a gap between the pressure of life and the peace we seek.

People have now bills, and they need now money. So they should be selling something that can be fulfilled and compensated fast…Mark liked Travel, I like Insurance…Both work.

Now we can agree, sales is the way…However, the choice most of us need to make is; Are you going to sell for someone else? or Are you going to sell for yourself?

Selling for someone else- If you work a corporate job selling anything, your income is capped. Your company, no matter how many plaques they give you, or Amazon gift cards show up in your email - Their only goal is to pay you as little as possible, before it’s too low that you look for better pay and quit. You are an expense and a profit center to them, and however irreplaceable you feel, the business you have brought them, is theirs to keep with or without you on payroll.

Selling for yourself- The day you step out into the marketplace and decide your worth is only going to be dictated by you, is the day you break free. The highest paying profession in the world is the career of Sales…This is due to the fact that you have no cap on your income. You can work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 a days year- prospecting, presenting and closing. Keeping all the cash that comes in and then ideally, turning around and teaching others while building a team to override.

The risk? How will you find people to sell your widget too, and how fast will your presentation skills develop to create enough pain or pleasure for your potential customers so that they move forward.

The truth is, the greatest risk is taking no risk at all…As all you are doing is following, The Salesman’s Mantra: “I help people make a decision to improve their lives.”

If you are new to sales then start by learning The 4 Step Sales Cycle- a simple way to communicate what you have and how it will help your prospect:

1. Problem - Create or Identify a Problem in the mind of your prospect that your product or service can resolve.

2. Desire - Create desire to solve that problem with your prospect by talking about a future where their problem is eliminated.

3. Solution - Offer a solution to their problem which in this case is a feature/benefit of the product or service that you offer.

4. Close - Ask them to Buy or move forward - Great closing line: “The next step is…Lets get you started.”

Practice this flow, learn it, and you will be well on your way to building something you own. Opportunity is where luck meets preparation.

Mark pitched a dream where you could travel the world and have money coming into your bank account effortlessly and continuously…He lived his truth, and crushed it everyday until his last- Miss you brother. 

Find yourself a Mark. Learn everything you can from them, and then get to work.

This Week’s Thoughts

“Youth is wasted on the young” famously said by author George Bernard Shaw, illustrates the classical lack of appreciation for life that we only come to cherish after many years around the sun.

George grew up in a different time than the world we are living in today. I feel that as I have gotten older, my own gratitude for younger people has taken a significant uptick to becoming focused on exclusively working with them.

The fastest growing team in my primary business is under 30 and they are growing exponentially by talking to their friends about the freedom and flexibility of being self-employed. Now, I strive to partner with them as they are the ones with the best ideas and truly are the future.

Today, my favorite business partners are younger than me. They have less baggage that they have picked up early in life, they tend to not have the responsibility of childcare, and bottomline - They just want to work.

Young people are growing up in a world of highlights & filters, and however much we may hate that being the reality of society - When they scroll and are only shown perfectly edited photos, designer apparel, and fancy cars- there becomes a desire to make that their world.

This world that young people are navigating through does create rose colored glasses to the way the world actually is…However, it is a motivator for those that are driven to become more.

Thats where you come in - Find them, connect with them, and partner with them. Seek to offer your own wisdom that you have acquired, and offer guidance to expedite this success track they are on.

What value can you offer them?
What are you a master of that only comes with time?
What skills do you possess that they are lacking?

Find a way to start working with younger people and your business will be on a path to compound…Because, if you are over 40 and not focused on connecting with people younger than you, then you can expect to age out in the next 10 years…and you will be too old to catch up.

The world is moving faster than ever- AI, Blockchain, Quantum Computing, ChatGPT- All things not only understood, but utilized by this younger generation.

The future is bright for those willing to bend their opinions to the will of the moving world.

Everything we want to be good at in life we have suck at first.

It is a universal law that the one thing that needs to get done is always the hardest to start.

• Make our first sales call.

• Start the course for a new business license.

• Start tracking our macros.

• Get that new LLC filed.

All these micro steps are actually the starting point to something that could be an incredible change in our lives.

Suck 1st.

Everything I have ever done I sucked 1st- serving, networking, software sales, insurance, and now writing.

But when you have a goal to be good, and focus everything on it, and make it the number one priority in your daily actions, while desperately eliminating all distractions pulling you from doing on it - sometimes you end up being great.

This is life.

This is not something you can just skip over and real skills cannot be purchased.

You have to develop them, through the phases of being completely terrible, seeking counsel, and then acting on it til your results mirror the people you look up to…and then repeating when the marketplace unfairly changes - as it continually does.

This process breaks almost everyone.

Why? Because most people quit at everything.

So what can you do to guarantee you will win…

Simple, just refuse to quit progressing on what you want and you will get it- or you will die trying.

Pretty cool story either way, you either get what you want or - Imagine your headstone 🪦 says - “Here lies {{First Name|you}}, whom never gave up”
