It does not ask whether the day had earned it.

The plea underneath is often simpler than the story we tell about it: to be free of the performance. Free of the need to be interesting while hurting.

What is a tautology? it is a statement of identity, that with zero information. Cat = Cat, Dog = Dog. A = A. Its essentially an empty statement.

Well, what if reality was a tautology? Not just a tautology, but the tautology. Reality = Reality. And everything within it, just a mini tautology within.

So reality would be the total infinite tautology of all tautologies. Cat = Cat, dog = dog, and A = A would all be contained within reality = reality.

This is the notion of absolute relativity. Where there are no building blocks to reality. Just a brute mix of all possible tautologies, all combined into the absolute tautology of reality itself. In this view there are no building blocks to anything. Everything is just itself, tautologically. Everything is absolutely relative to everything else.

What this means is that, reality contains everything. Every finite (and even infinite) tautology possible, every definition possible, every distinction possible, is reality. That is what is known as Absolute Infinity, first coined by Georg Cantor in 1883.

And since every tautology contains zero information, that’s what reality is. Nothing. No information whatsoever. Just reality = reality. An ultimate tautology. The Absolute Infinity of Tautologies, structurally, is identical to no-finite-thing. Reality is Infinite. Non Finite. Undefined. Indistinct. Uncapturable. Groundless. Nothing.

That’s why science will go on forever. As will philosophy. Psychology. Metaphysics. There was never anything to grasp anyway. Because reality is infinite. And infinity, is nothing.

Powered by beehiiv

Doesn't that give it away?

Because when you dig deep enough, you realize that reality is absurd and contradictory. It is a strange loop in and of itself. And so the stability is clearly just a facade that peels away upon deep inquiry.

More than anything, it's the desperate attempt to hide the absurdity of the nothingness that gives it away. The sweaty, white knuckled grip on the poker table, insisting the cards are solid while they're made of absolutely nothing. The sheer effort it takes to maintain this consensus reality; the scaffolding of language, laws, identities, and even the linear ticking of time, is so over the top that it reeks of a cover-up.

To see it, you must dig very deeply. You cannot be told this joke and get it. You have to excavate it past the rational mind's defense mechanisms until the shovel hits the infinite regress. But once you see it, once you realize reality MUST be contradictory, then the desperation of the shared stability of the illusion becomes obvious. And pretty funny.

While one can take the scientific route and realize that everything dissolves into quantum probability haze, we can go even further. We can take the next step and realize that quantum physics, and in fact all of science, is just part of the dream. Part of the desperation. Quantum mechanics, relativity, the Standard Model. They are not the "ground truth", they are the dream's internal operating manual. A beautifully intricate set of equations designed to give the illusion of depth and causality, like a character in a novel discovering the "physics" of their fictional paper world.

In reality, there's nothing there. The true nature of reality is nothing. Nothing but a desperate attempt at something, which when diligently investigated, collapses into nothingness.

And this is the most exquisite trap. The moment you diligently, rigorously, ruthlessly investigate the "something", whether it's a subatomic particle, a thought, or a memory, it doesn't just get smaller or weirder. It collapses into nothingness because there was never anything there to collapse from. The diligent investigation is like trying to bite your own teeth; the closer you get, the faster the object of your inquiry dissolves back into the subjective act of inquiring. The investigation itself is the trigger mechanism.

And the last gasp of the attempt - and in some sense, its ultimate triumph - is Infinity.

The infinite regress within, and the Absolute Infinity without. Guaranteeing that whichever way you look, there will forever be an endless investigation of all causes and facets of the dream, dreamer, and everything between.

An infinite regress, an absolute infinity of everything—a tautology of all things: Reality = Reality. Everything = Everything. It is the ultimate camouflage. Because if the universe is an infinite regress of causes on the inside, and an infinite expanse of objects on the outside, then every question merely points to another question.

Metaphysics is the habit of asking what the world is, once, and hoping the answer will stay still.

For a long time the hope looked reasonable. A last substance. A last cause. A picture complete enough that the next generation would only have to fill in details. Each system arrived with that confidence, and each was succeeded by another that explained the confidence away.

After the last of those pictures, what remains is not a better theory. What remains is the appetite that built them. The need for a ground. The discomfort of a question that does not close.

It is tempting to treat that remainder as a failure of thought. If the systems keep collapsing, perhaps the question was malformed. Perhaps we should confine ourselves to prediction, or to language, or to the uses of a life. That is a respectable retreat. It is also a metaphysics of its own: the claim that the unanswerable should be declined.

There is another reading. The collapse is information. It tells you that reality does not sit still for a final inventory. Every map is a cut. Every cut leaves an outside. The outside is not a leftover to be mopped up later; it is what made the map possible.

This is why the ruins are useful. Not as nostalgia for a cathedral of ideas, and not as a joke at the expense of those who built it. As evidence. People do not raise columns like that unless something in them insists that the world is one thing, and that the one thing can be named.

Aim does not survive the ruins by becoming a smaller theory. It survives as a direction taken in the absence of a last word. You still have to live. You still have to decide what is worth serving when the explanation has explained itself away.

After metaphysics, the question remains.

Silence is not the absence of the world. It is what you notice when the commentary thins.

Most of a day is covered in noise that does not sound like noise: plans, justifications, the next sentence rehearsed while the present one is still being spoken. Attention is spent in advance. By evening there is little left to spend on what is actually here.

The usual advice is to add a practice, as if quiet were a product you could order. Sometimes a practice helps. Often it becomes another layer of commentary — a report on how well you are doing at not reporting. The quiet that matters does not arrive as an achievement. It is what remains when you stop inflating the room.

Sit long enough without a project and the first thing that shows up is not peace. It is the mind's objection to being unemployed. Restlessness, argument, a sudden interest in rearranging the furniture of your biography. That weather is not a mistake. It is the noise noticing that it has been seen.

If you do not pick a fight with it, something else becomes audible. Not a message. A width. The same street, the same body, without the constant caption. Sorrow can be there. So can ordinary light on a wall. Neither needs to be improved before it is allowed to exist.

This is not an argument against speech, or against science, or against the work of making distinctions. Those are how a life takes shape. It is an argument against the superstition that more commentary is always more truth.

What remains, when the noise falls away, is not a hidden object you can display. It is the fact of being aware at all — prior to the story of who is aware, and of what. You cannot keep it. You can only stop covering it for a while.

Then the day starts again. The captions return. That is fine. The point was never to live in a blank. The point was to find out that the blank was not empty, and that you do not have to win an argument with yourself in order to be here.

Powered by beehiiv

 .bh__table_header p { color: #2A2A2A; font-family:'Trebuchet MS','Lucida Grande',Tahoma,sans-serif !important; overflow-wrap: break-word; }

Psychology is usually treated as a side science of the person. A clinic. A temperament. A story about childhood that explains why you are difficult.

That is too small.

If all is mind — not “your mind,” not the brain’s private movie, but the field in which brains, worlds, and persons appear — then psychology is not a department next to physics and metaphysics. It is the same investigation, entered from the inside.

The observer problem is already this. Looking changes what is there. The looker is not a camera bolted to a universe. The looker is the universe pretending to stand aside.

So the psyche is not a bag of traits riding around in a skull. It is the local weather of mind. Ego, shadow, dream, dread, love: these are not decorations on a physical object. They are how the field knots itself into a someone.

This is why psychology maps onto metaphysics without remainder, if you are willing to stop treating “inner” as a metaphor.

What we call the outer world is mind stabilized as consensus. What we call the inner world is mind unstabilized as experience. The line between them is a convenience of the ego, which needs a room to hide in and a hallway to claim as not-me.

Three terms will do for a working map.

The ego: the known I. The narrator. The one who says mine. It is not evil. It is a surface. Surfaces exist to hide depth.

The collective unconscious: what the ego hides. Not a personal diary of shame — the shared, inherited, not-I. Instinct, myth, the species-mind, the images that arrive uninvited. The ego cannot afford this, because if the I is not the author of its contents, the I is not sovereign.

The Self: not the improved ego. The nondual emptiness that is both halves and the circle that holds them — the entire yin-yang, not the white fish or the black fish. Ego plus unconscious does not add up to a bigger person. They are already the same whole, seen from the cut and seen from the uncut.

Science can dissolve the object into probability. Philosophy can dissolve the claim into tautology. Spirituality can dissolve the seeker into quiet. Psychology is the map of the cut itself: how mind becomes someone, what that someone hides, and what remains when the hiding is seen through.

This door does not replace the others. It is how the others happen to a life.

Powered by beehiiv

The ego is not a villain in a story about becoming good.

It is a function. It gathers a name, a face, a continuity of memory, a set of preferences that can be defended. It says I, and the saying is the thing.

Without that saying, there is experience, but there is no one to own it. Ownership is the ego’s entire job.

What it hides, then, is not merely embarrassing. Shame is cheap. The ego can metabolize shame; shame still has an owner. What the ego cannot metabolize is content that does not belong to anyone.

Dreams that feel older than the dreamer. Fears that have no biography. Images that arrive as if they had been waiting in the species. A grief that is not yours and will not be dismissed as “projection.”

This is what Jung pointed at with the collective unconscious, and what the ego hears as an insult. If the depths are collective, the I is not the author of itself. If the I is not the author of itself, sovereignty was a costume.

So the ego hides. It hides by personalizing. It turns a mythic terror into a childhood anecdote. It turns a shared image into a private symptom. It turns the not-I into a problem to be solved by the I — which is the only move that keeps the I in charge.

Notice the desperation. It is the same desperation as consensus reality: the sweaty grip on the table, insisting the cards are solid. Here the cards are identity. The scaffolding is narrative. The cover-up is called a personality.

Psychology, in the small sense, helps the ego become a more competent manager of its secrets. That has its place. People suffer.

Psychology, in the sense this publication needs, watches the hiding itself. Not to shame the ego. The surface is doing what surfaces do. To see that the hidden is not a basement of the person. It is the rest of mind, which the person was invented to keep out.

The observer and the observed are not two. The hider and the hidden are not two. The ego is the cut. What it hides is not behind the cut. It is the field the cut was carved from.

Powered by beehiiv

Call it the collective unconscious if the name still works. The danger of the name is that it sounds like a library in the basement of the species: archetypes on shelves, a catalog of Mother, Trickster, Shadow, Self, available for interpretation.

That is already the ego’s version. A warehouse can be managed. Types can be identified. Identification is ownership by other means.

What the term is trying to say is simpler and worse.

There is mind that is not personal, and it is not elsewhere. It shows up as your dream, your panic, your infatuation, your politics, your God. It is collective not because a committee voted, but because it was never yours to begin with.

The ego hides this the way a character in a novel hides that they are made of paper. Not by conspiracy. By being a character. The plot requires that the paper not notice itself.

Myths persist because they are not invented by individuals. They are how the field remembers in images. Instinct is the body of that memory. You do not choose to flinch. You do not choose the shape of the first love. You do not choose the gods that still run the culture under secular names.

Science, looking from the outside, will try to reduce this to evolutionary psychology, modules, game theory. Those maps have their use. They are still the dream’s internal operating manual — like quantum mechanics, a beautifully intricate set of reasons for why the paper world holds together.

Philosophy, looking at claims, will try to dissolve the collective unconscious into a metaphor, a useful fiction, a category error. Sometimes it is those things.

When people say “self” they mean the ego: a more healed one, a more authentic one, a brand. Capitalize it and they still mean a person, only glowing.

That is not what is meant here.

The Self — Jung’s word, used until a better one arrives — is not a bigger I. It is the whole in which I and not-I already are. Ego and collective unconscious are not two floors of a building the Self owns. They are the two fishes of the yin-yang: opposed, interlocking, each carrying a dot of the other, and meaningless without the circle.

The circle is emptiness. Not a blank, not a nihil. The nondual field that can appear as a someone and as the depths that someone hides, without being either.

This is why psychology maps onto metaphysics at the root. The psyche’s map (ego / unconscious / Self) is the same map as appearance / hidden / ground, or form / void / the not-two. You can enter by a dream. You can enter by a particle. You can enter by a silence. The topology does not change.

The ego wants the Self as a prize: integration, wholeness, the complete personality. That is the white fish trying to eat the circle. Integration as a project is still egoic. The Self is not produced by the ego making friends with its shadow. The Self is what was the case while the making-friends was happening.

The collective unconscious wants the Self as absorption: dissolve the I, drown in the chorus, become myth. That is the black fish trying to eat the circle. There is no one left to live. Telos dies. A life toward the good requires a someone — even if the someone is a surface.

The yin-yang is the entire figure. Not balance as a lifestyle. The fact that the cut and the uncut are one display.

So: do not improve the ego into the Self. Do not smash the ego to reach the Self. See the figure. The seeing is already the circle. The someone who sees is already the white fish. The depths that flood the seeing are already the black fish. Nothing extra is required, which is why it is so hard.

This is psychological. You can watch it in a mood, a projection, a dream.

This is metaphysical. You can watch it as the structure of mind itself.

If all is mind, there is no gap between those sentences.

Powered by beehiiv

Religion, as a word, is often used as a synonym for belief. That is a modern habit, and it hides the older fact.

Before a creed is a set of propositions, it is a form: a calendar, a posture, a table, a text read aloud in a room of other people. The form does not wait for the participant to feel authentic. It asks the body to arrive first.

Spirituality, in the contemporary sense, tends to reverse the order. First the inner weather. Then, maybe, a practice if it still fits. The risk is obvious and human. Feeling is weather. Weather changes. A life built only on weather has nothing to keep it when the mood moves.

This is not an argument that form is truer than insight, or that inherited ritual is above criticism. Plenty of forms have been used to coerce. The point is narrower. A tradition is a technology for keeping a question alive across people who will not all be inspired on the same morning.

Scripture works this way. It is not only a library of claims. It is a paced encounter — yearly cycles, weekly portions, sentences meant to be heard with other ears in the room. The text is doing something to attention that a private highlight reel does not.

Quoted For Truth keeps Religion distinct from Spirituality for that reason. One thread is the inherited form. The other is the lived quiet. They speak to each other. They are not the same door.

If you only trust what you currently feel, you will call that honesty. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is just the smallest available time-horizon. Form is one way a people stretch that horizon past a single mood.

Powered by beehiiv

A calendar looks like an administrative object. It is not. It is a claim about which moments are thick enough to return to.

Every tradition that lasts long enough to be called a religion keeps time on purpose. Fast days. Feast days. A week that is not merely seven mornings. A year that is not merely an orbit. The point is not to decorate the clock. The point is to refuse the idea that all hours are equal.

Modern life tends the other way. The hour becomes a unit of production. Days blur. The weekend is a recovery interval, not a different kind of time. In that weather it is easy to think of liturgy as costume — something extra people put on when they want a feeling. The older reading is inverted. The form is what makes a people able to feel the same thing together, later, when the original mood is gone.

This is why a holy day can survive the death of the person who first kept it. The calendar is a memory that does not require a single rememberer. It is also a philosophy of the body: when to eat, when to refrain, when to gather, when to be quiet in public. Those are metaphysical instructions wearing the clothes of a schedule.

None of this requires you to accept every inherited date. Calendars have been used to conscript as well as to keep. The useful question is smaller. What, in a life, is allowed to recur? What is given a name so it cannot be swallowed by the next task?

Religion, on this site, is the thread that takes that question seriously — not as private preference, but as a form a people can inhabit together. Spirituality may arrive as silence. Religion arrives as a date on the wall, and the decision to treat it as more than ink.

Powered by beehiiv

A scripture is easy to mistake for a book. It has pages, or a scroll, or a screen. It can be quoted. It can be argued with. That is the least interesting thing it does.

In a living tradition the text is paced. Someone reads it aloud. Someone else has heard it before. The room supplies a tempo the private reader does not have to invent. Portions return annually. Sentences acquire a weight they would not have if they were encountered once, in a feed, and scrolled past.

This is how a text becomes a people. Not by being believed in the abstract, but by being inhabited on a schedule, with other bodies, until the words are a shared instrument rather than a private opinion. The people are not an audience for the book. The book is a tool the people use to remain a people.

Criticism still belongs here. Texts have been used to injure. Canon has been a weapon. The honest response is not to pretend that never happened. It is to notice that the same technology — repetition, hearing, a calendar of return — is also how repair gets a chance to last longer than a mood.

Quoted For Truth keeps this thread next to Spirituality on purpose. One is the inherited text and the form that carries it. The other is what remains when the noise falls away. They are not rivals unless you force them to be.

If you have only ever met scripture as a proof, try meeting it as a pace. The question is not first whether you assent. The question is what kind of attention the form is trying to train — and whether that attention is worth keeping.

Powered by beehiiv

It has become ordinary to speak of the world as information. Genes as code. Brains as processors. Markets as signal. The metaphor is so successful that it stops sounding like a metaphor.

There is a reason it works. A great deal of what we can predict, we can predict by treating a system as if it were processing inputs into outputs. Computation is a real method. It is also, quietly, a metaphysics: the claim that what a thing is, is what can be encoded and transformed.

The claim is not empty. It has built machines that write, see, and speak with a fluency that used to belong only to minds. That success tempts a further step — that mind itself is software, and that the remainder is hardware we have not finished describing.

The remainder is the interesting part. Information, as used in the lab, is a measure of surprise relative to a model. It is not a substance. It does not sit in the world the way water sits in a glass. When we say the world is information, we are often smuggling a model into the place where a world should be.

This thread is for that tension. Not for gadget news, and not for panic. For the older question, restated: if reality can be computed, what, if anything, is left over — and does a life have to be lived as if the leftover were nothing?

Quoted For Truth keeps AI & Computation beside Science on purpose. Science is the laboratory path. This is the path that treats software as a picture of mind, and then asks whether the picture can bear the weight we are putting on it.

Powered by beehiiv

That is its job. It does not have to mean anything in order to be good at the job. This is easy to forget when the predictions arrive in fluent sentences.

Training is a statistical intimacy with a corpus. The system becomes skilled at continuing the sort of thing that has already been said. Skill is not the same as understanding. Continuation is not the same as a world.

We are now in the habit of asking models questions we used to reserve for teachers, lovers, and priests. The answers can be useful. They can also be a high-quality way of not sitting with the question. A sentence that sounds like care is not yet care.

None of this requires contempt for the tools. The tools are extraordinary. The error is to treat extraordinary prediction as a new metaphysics — as if the fact that a system can imitate mind meant that mind had been explained, or that a life could be outsourced to the imitation.

What a model cannot mean is the cost of a choice. It can describe costs. It can average them. It cannot be the one who will have to live with the remainder. That remainder is where ethics actually happens.

Use the machines for what they do. The question remains: what is reality made of, and what does that mean for how we live? A model can assemble language around that question without bearing the consequences of an answer.

Powered by beehiiv

As Descartes said, “I think, therefore I am”. The indubitable Cogito. We can even stretch that further and say I Am, therefore I think.

Being is prior.

So in the context of our question, and our previous establishment that surely something must exist, we can infer that any Absolute is that which necessarily must exist for all else to exist.

Interestingly, that brings us back to our “meta-cogito”, if you will. If we really ask ourselves the question, what must necessarily exist, Absolutely exist, in order to make sense of anything at all, then we get to the heart of it. I Am, therefore I think.

Or even more simply, as the ancients realized: I Am.

The ultimate tautology. The infinite regress of the Self.

Powered by beehiiv
