Essential Lighting Tips by James Nader

For me having a deep understanding of the subtleties of lighting is really important, whether it is harsh or gentle, knowledge of lighting can greatly enhance the quality of your work. If you want to highlight textures and add a sense of drama to your photographs, hard light is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you want to capture gentle and emotional photographs, soft light is really successful. I use both but mainly hard lighting or directional for effect.

I have always experimented with tools such as snoots, grids, and diffusers in order to enhance your mastery of lighting control. It is important to keep in mind that the positioning and closeness of your light source are essential variables.

I really encourage you to continually experiment with various angles and instruments, delving into the distinctive styles and atmospheres that most effectively convey your artistic vision. Consider lighting as a partner in the craft of photography; mastering its impact will significantly improve your ability to tell stories.

1. Use a single, bright light source such as a spotlight or a bare bulb.

2. Increase the distance between the light source and the subject to intensify the hardness of the light.

3. Employ tools like snoots or grids to focus and direct the light precisely.

The Art of Imperfection: Finding Emotional Richness in Flawed Photographs

In the realm of photography, there's a common misconception that the value of a photograph is intrinsically tied to its technical perfection. This notion champions crisp focus, immaculate composition, and precise exposure as the hallmarks of a successful image. However, an emerging perspective that I wholeheartedly embrace challenges this traditional view, arguing that the emotional impact of a photograph far outweighs its technical merits.

The Emotional Spectrum of Imperfection

At the heart of this perspective is the belief that imperfection can, paradoxically, perfect a photograph. A slightly blurry image, a frame tilted off its axis—affectionately known as "dutch"—or even a composition that breaks conventional rules can evoke a depth of feeling and a sense of authenticity that polished, technically flawless images often lack. These "flaws" can imbue a photograph with personality, character, and soul, transforming it from a mere visual record into a conduit for human emotion.

The Authenticity of the Moment

What draws us into a photograph is not always its meticulous detailing or its adherence to the rules of composition but rather its ability to capture a fleeting moment, raw and unfiltered. For instance, the slight blur of a moving subject can convey a sense of motion and life that a perfectly frozen frame might not. Similarly, an unconventional angle might offer a fresh perspective, making the familiar unfamiliar and thus more engaging. These imperfections can make a photo more relatable, as they mirror the imperfect nature of human perception and experience.

Emotional Resonance vs. Technical Precision

Pursuing technical perfection in photography often leads to clinically precise but emotionally sterile images. They may showcase the photographer's skill and technical prowess but fail to connect deeply emotionally. In contrast, a photo that embraces its imperfections can tell a story, evoke memories, or stir emotions in a way that a technically perfect photo might not. It's the difference between a photograph that you admire for a few moments and one that stays with you, haunting your thoughts and stirring your emotions long after you've looked away.

The Artistic Value of Imperfection

This is not to say that technical skills and knowledge are unimportant in photography. On the contrary, understanding the rules is often the first step towards meaningfully breaking them. However, the ultimate goal of photography—as with any art form—should be to evoke a response, communicate, and touch hearts and minds. In this light, a photograph's true value lies not in its technical execution but in its ability to convey emotion and capture the beauty of our imperfect world.

Photography has been a rewarding profession and hobby for me, it allows for creative expression and capturing moments. It has been a profession that gives variety and travel, of course there are ups and downs but If you're looking to improve your photo quality, whether as a beginner or an enthusiast, my practical tips can help you take better photos and see immediate improvements, this was my process.

Essential Gear and Preparation

Invest in Quality Equipment

Quality equipment is vital for high-quality photos. Choose a camera with customisation options and sturdy accessories. They do NOT need to be the latest or the best to start..

Understanding Your Focus

Determining and maintaining your focal point is crucial. If your subject is a person, get close enough to fill the frame. Use camera features like subject lock to keep your subject in sharp focus while blurring the background.

Composition Techniques - Mastering the Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds involves dividing your shot into three equal parts both vertically and horizontally. Position your subject off-center for a more engaging composition.

Experiment with Angles

Explore different perspectives by changing your angles. Shoot from high, low, or skewed angles to create depth and unique moods. A tripod can be helpful for achieving these angles.

Effective Framing

Use natural frames like doorways or trees to direct focus to your subject. This technique adds depth and can be particularly effective in portrait photography.

Lighting and Settings

Ideal Lighting Conditions

Natural lighting, particularly during the golden hours, is ideal. If unavailable, consider artificial lighting like studio or ring lights, avoiding harsh flash. Practise makes perfect!

Utilising Settings

Experiment with your camera’s settings before shooting. Adjust aperture, contrast, and explore lens filters to minimize glare and enhance colors.

The Shooting and Editing Process

The More, the Merrier

Take multiple shots from various angles and settings. Experiment with different subjects and styles to develop your unique approach. Angles have always been essential to me, unless shooting landscapes, shoot without a tripod. My way of shooting at the start was to emulate Russian propaganda posters for the more dynamic look, especially for men and menswear shoots.

Simple Backgrounds for Portraits

Choose simple backgrounds for portrait photography to avoid distractions and emphasise the subject wherever possible or like my Iceland shoots, include the location to tell a story

The Art of Editing

Take time to edit your photos, using software or apps to adjust cropping, colors, and effects. Fine-tune your photos to perfection before sharing or printing. Today this is essential.

What am I Reading this week

Lighting a model for a projector photoshoot is not as easy as you may think, but it is well worth the time invested to achieve a different take on light falling on your Muse.

In the 1960s, John French, photographed models with floral and 60s-style patterns projected onto their bodies instead of clothes. These black-and-white prints represent the versatile and exciting possibilities that projections can offer artists and photographers.

I wanted to try projector photography and see if my projector lighting mixed with some attractive projected screens was as good as they say.

Modern projectors are digital, have LED bulbs, and are pretty sturdy compared to your mom and dad’s version with the lamp, which would often break; however, generally, they have a low light output for capturing images, and if purchasing, you would need some elemental bulb power.

To counteract this, positioning the projector at not just a higher height but also at an optimal angle relative to the model is key. Experiment with different angles to see which best complements the model's features. A slightly angled light can reduce the intensity of the shadows, softening the overall look and bringing a more three-dimensional and dynamic quality to the image.

With so many digital projectors out there that will be great for projector photography, how do you know if the one you have or plan to buy is the right option for you? There are a few things that you’ll need to consider, including brightness, size, and definition. Intelligence is essential, so I am looking for a projector with at least 3,500 lumens. That way, your projected image will still be visible even when you’re working with a different light source, if you plan to.

The Projector

For my test, I illuminated the model with only the projector light source. My projector was purchased from Amazon and was the VANKYO Performance V630 Native 1080P Full HD Projector, 6800 Lumens 300″ LED Projector, which is reasonably bright and seemed perfect for what we were achieving.

Now, you don’t have enough light to shoot fast, but there are two ways to get around this. You can use slower shutter speeds, which, of course, limit how quickly you can work with the model, and, of course, the use of a tripod is essential, or you can increase your camera’s ISO and speed up the shots, which in turn allows faster working. Higher ISO does tend to clean up the mids and highs of the image.

Best Images for Projection

Although you can technically use any graphics you want, it can be beneficial to use photos that don’t have too many distracting elements but have some negative space to place your model. Examples of projected images include the skies, clouds, and open landscapes.

Patterns also work well for a projected image. Placing a subject in front of the ways would create distortions that look futuristic. You can try anything from graphic lines and shapes to maybe clouds and flowers. It could be anything that allows for the contrast that you will need.

We chose for our projector lighting test a selection of grids, rather like Venetian blinds, but also for our video, some moving grids and graphic blocks.

Using your Projector for Best results

A studio with very little ambient light or a darkened room is essential so as not to ruin your exposure. Any ambient light will be cumulative with your final disclosures. It would help to have a plain wall, preferably white or light, so the image is projected. If you want a small projected image, place the projector at least four feet away from the wall. But if you desire a more significant projection, put it at least 8 feet or more. Remember that the farther away you are, the larger the screen.

Once you finish setting up your projector using the supplied HDMI cables, the next step is to adjust the focus, which is located near the lens. First, turn on the device. Once the menu appears on the screen, change the focus dial as you would with a camera lens until everything is sharp. Now go to the Keystone dial and move it back and forth until the screen's perspective looks straight.

Now that the screen is sharp and straight and your image looks sharp across it all, plug your computer into an HDMI port. Use the projector’s buttons or the remote to access the menu and select HDMI to watch the screen of your computer appear on the wall behind.

Use your iPhone or iPad to connect and preview patterns

We used our iPhone to connect to the HDMI port of the projector to project your projector photography images. Our experience was that as our images to project were loaded into the photos section of the iPhone, they were of a specific size, and although this was great for headshots, it was clear you would need ample space to get a full-length or even 3/4-length shot. The reason for this, as we worked out, was purely down to the screen size of our device.

For our next attempt, we would use the larger iPad for projection so that the image would be more extensive and more significant; this would allow for an excellent standing shot; however, if not, it was plenty good enough for portraiture.

Some readings from the shoot will give you an idea before retouching how we set up the shooting specs. The lens was 105mmISO was only 80; the large aperture of the 105 allowed this; otherwise, we could easily have been more than 400 ISOExposure was 1.6 seconds at F14. Again, the lens helped, as did the higher-power projector. All images were handheld

5 TIPS & IDEAS TO TRY​- Projecting Mexican masks onto a model face.​- Project text, shapes or graphic designs to create graphical bodywork on the face.​- Great for illuminating the nude form; add some creative shapes for a more advanced result.​- Projecting slideshows of images over the face, with slow shutter speed and creating motion blur exposures.​- Use moving graphics from YouTube to create animated sequences or even your psychedelic film like we did.

The State of Photography in 2023

In 2023, photography continued to be a dynamic field, influenced heavily by technological advancements and cultural shifts. The year was characterised by diverse styles and themes, reflecting the constantly evolving nature of the medium and how social media has driven the expectation of photography in an unfortunate way. I feel that the art of photography has really dipped in favour of long-form video formats and throw-away images and video. This is a step backward for me, but it offers a real opportunity in 2024 to return to the basics. I look forward to exploring this process in greater detail and sharing more about my processes and experience to help fledgling photographers go out and find new work, clients, and techniques.

Technological Innovations

Advances in camera technology, including improvements in mirrorless cameras and mobile photography, have significantly impacted the photographic landscape. High-resolution sensors, better low-light performance, and enhanced image stabilisation became standard features, making professional-grade photography more accessible and downgrading client expectations but increasing the choice of whom to use.

Creative Trends

In terms of creativity, 2023 saw a surge in experimental photography, with photographers pushing the boundaries of traditional genres. Drone photography gained popularity for its ability to capture unique perspectives, while macro photography continued to fascinate with its detailed exploration of the minutiae of life. Lighting, however, is the key to all; by mastering light, you master photography.

Social and Ethical Considerations

Socially and ethically conscious photography gained prominence, focusing on authenticity, storytelling, and ethical considerations. Documentary and street photography played a pivotal role in highlighting social issues and giving a voice to underrepresented communities.

Anticipated Trends in 2024

As we transition into 2024, several new trends are expected to shape the world of photography.

AI and Computational Photography

Artificial intelligence (AI) and computational photography are set to redefine what's possible in image creation and editing. AI-driven tools will offer more sophisticated editing capabilities, automating complex processes and enabling photographers to focus more on creative aspects. I have now recently been appointed as an AI consultant working within university life to work out how AI can work with the development of photography and see how we can work with it rather than against it.

Hyperrealism and Monochrome Contrast

Hyperrealism will emerge as a key trend, blending photography and digital art to create images that surpass traditional realism. Simultaneously, the use of monochrome contrast is expected to gain traction, providing a stark, timeless quality to images. Monochrome and black-and-white processes are making a comeback, and as I am an expert in monochrome, this will feature a lot more in my workflow and process in the initial few months of 2024

Quiet Luxury and Analog Echoes

Quiet luxury, which emphasizes subtlety and understated elegance, is predicted to be prevalent in commercial and fashion photography. Additionally, the revival of analog techniques, including film photography, will continue, driven by nostalgia and a desire for more 'hands-on' photographic experiences.

Cinematic Narration and Beyond Binary

Cinematic narration in photography, where images are crafted to tell compelling stories akin to film, will become more mainstream. There will also be a focus on inclusive and diverse representations, moving beyond binary perceptions of identity and culture.

Surrealism in Product Photography

Product photography is expected to incorporate elements of surrealism, using props of unusual shapes and sizes to create imaginative and visually arresting images. Beware of the AI dragon that is taking over here; surrealism is not the norm, and AI is the best creator of these concepts, especially in commercial studio stills and product photography.

Conclusion: An Evolving Landscape

Both technological advancements and a shift in creative expression mark the transition from 2023 to 2024 in the world of photography. While technology continues to offer new tools and possibilities, the heart of photography remains in storytelling and the ability to evoke emotion. As we move forward, the fusion of technology with traditional techniques and ethical considerations will continue to shape this ever-evolving art form.
