Our latest biweekly National Independent Candidate Awareness poll was just released. Two weeks ago we launched the initial poll, the 1st of its kind in the US.

The BIG news? Republican openness to a strong independent candidate jumped from 62.7% to 70.3% — a +7.6-point move, the largest change anywhere in the survey. Now 70%+ of all voters, whether they are Democrat, independent or Republican, are open to an independent candidates. More insights here on the latest poll findings.

69.5% of Americans say they would be likely to vote for a strong, well-funded independent who shared their views and was willing to work across the aisle. And its not just Independents (78.7%) that are the most receptive. Solid majorities of Democrats (71.3%) and Republicans (62.7%) too, and across every age group with 78.7% of those 18–29 and 74.6% of those 30–44.

4 - Idaho Gov. Brad Little reports raising more campaign money than all other statewide candidates

The Independence Party

Independent voters don't have equal access to the political process everywhere. In Alaska, open primaries and ranked choice voting allow candidates and voters outside the major parties to participate more fully. In other states, the barriers are steep.

In Illinois, major party candidates for governor need roughly 5,000 signatures to appear on the primary ballot. Candidates running outside the two parties may need around 25,000 — often in a shorter timeframe. Indiana's requirements are higher still: independent candidates for statewide office typically need 35,000 to 45,000 signatures compared to roughly 4,500 for major party candidates.

Groups in both states are exploring workarounds. In Illinois, one strategy by the Independence Party involves running a candidate who, by earning at least 5% of the vote, could establish ongoing ballot access for a new party. Indiana has a similar threshold — 2% of the vote — that qualifies a party for minor party status and future ballot access.

Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s Some Quick Tips on How to Handle any Politics Conversations that Might Arise…

Hi Friends,

The holiday season is here—and along with the pie and laughter, sometimes politics sneak onto the menu. Instead of letting these conversations spiral into stress, here are practical ways to keep things constructive and connected.

Every Family Has That Person

Maybe it’s Uncle Ron who starts with, “This may not be politically correct, but…”
Or Aunt Carol, armed with printouts.
Or your cousin who fact-checks everyone in real time.

Meanwhile, you’re just trying to enjoy dessert in peace.

Political conversations with family feel different than with friends or colleagues—not because the issues are harder, but because the relationships are deeper. Family knows which buttons to push, and somehow, they always do.

But you don’t have to let dinner turn into a debate stage. Here are six strategies from my conversation with psychologist Kurt Gray, author of Outraged.

1. Name What’s Really Happening

When a stranger argues, it’s weird.
When family argues, it feels personal—even when it shouldn’t.

You’re reacting not just to the comment, but to:

• The last 15 times you’ve had this argument

• That offhand remark from 2011 you still remember

• The feeling they’re not hearing you

Simply acknowledging, “Of course this feels harder—it’s family,” can take the pressure off.

2. Use the Little Pause

That flash of heat, tight chest, urge to fire back? Pause.
Take a breath. Sip water. Pretend you left something in the oven.

Your nervous system resets, and you choose your response instead of reacting.

3. Ask One Simple Question

If someone drops a political grenade, try:
“What makes you say that?”

Genuinely. Not sarcastically.

This slows things down, forces them off autopilot, and gives you space to breathe. Sometimes, they realize they don’t even know why they said it.

4. Make Your Goal Connection, Not Competition

Fact-checking family rarely works. Winning? Even less so.

Better moves sound like:

• “I hear what you’re saying…”

• “Here’s where I’m coming from…”

• “I think we care about the same things, even if we disagree on policy.”

If your goal is connection, these work. If your goal is to win, expect stress.

5. Know What You’re Actually Trying to Accomplish

Holiday dinners aren’t congressional hearings.
You don’t have to fix anyone or remake their worldview before dessert.

It’s okay to say:

• “I love you. Let’s agree to disagree.”

• “I appreciate your commitment to fairness/safety/well-being.”

Sometimes the brave move is disengaging from the argument and re-engaging in the relationship.

6. Take Breaks—Seriously

If things get heated or you’re just tired, give yourself permission to:

• Refill your drink

• Step outside for fresh air

• Help in the kitchen

• Pet the dog

Bonus points if you walk away calmly before you feel like stomping off.

Bottom Line

You don’t have to avoid politics—and you don’t have to argue either.
With a few tools, the right mindset, and a little compassion (for yourself and everyone else), you can keep the holidays joyful and connected.

Another government shutdown has come and (appears to be) gone, and the headlines sound familiar: Who won? Who lost? Which party will pay the price? The truth is, no one won. Not the TSA agent working without pay. Not the traveler stuck in an airport. Not the small business waiting on a federal loan. The real losers are everyday Americans.

While politicians fight over optics, voters see something else: dysfunction. Both parties look bad—Democrats disorganized, Republicans inflexible—and Washington seems incapable of governing. And that frustration is fueling a quiet but powerful shift.

Independents are no longer just “spoilers.” They’re becoming a force. Tired of partisan games, they want accountability and results. Recent polling shows more Americans view independent candidates as a fresh start—an alternative to gridlock.

Remember: the midterms are less than one year away.

And as the midterms approach, here’s the takeaway: If the two major parties keep treating governance like a zero-sum game, they risk losing more than a shutdown battle. They risk losing us, the voters, who are ready for something different.

Inflation continues to rise, and Washington isn’t just failing to act—it’s not even open. With the government shutdown dragging on, Americans are left wondering who’s looking out for them.

Meanwhile, many members of Congress are avoiding town halls, dodging opportunities to hear directly from the people they represent. In some states, they’re even manipulating redistricting processes to choose their voters instead of the other way around.

Add to that a primary system that rewards the most extreme candidates and locks in their victories in all but a handful of competitive districts. The result? Everyday Americans—people like you and me—are left without candidates who reflect our values. It’s no surprise that so many are disengaging from politics altogether.

But change is possible.

In just over a year, the U.S. will hold midterm elections. We want the choices on the ballot to look radically different from what we’re seeing now. That starts with getting normal people back into politics—not just as voters, but as candidates.

I've been thinking lately about why my very small town of Pendleton, South Carolina is such a great place to live. It's not just that it has all the essentials (bookstore, check; bakery, check; coffee, check, check, check). It’s a feeling of agency that comes from people getting together to make things happen, like clean-up days, festivals on the town square, the high school homecoming parade, and more. 

Politics invites us to give our agency away. It says to vote for the right leader, because they're the only one who can stop the other side. It says to talk about, post about, donate to whatever is happening in Washington. 

But while we're busy obsessing about things far away that we have little hope of influencing directly, we're missing opportunities to have agency in our own lives and communities. 

Reclaiming our agency is important not only because that's how we thrive, but also because working on things together can help us see people differently. When we share goals with people who differ from us—whether it’s organizing a Christmas market, opening a bookstore, or cleaning up a park—we see the decency, trustworthiness, and complexity of other people. They stop being "the other side" and start to become complex, multifaceted individuals, even if no one changes their mind.

If you tell people to find common ground across political differences, it sounds impossible. But people who host a potluck, spread mulch at the playground, or paint over some graffiti will find themselves surprised at how much agency and commonality they have with their neighbors.
