Most fly fisherman would agree…nothing beats the sight and feel of a trout crushing a perfectly drifted fat dry fly.

But the winter months are long, and the fat flies flew south with the geese.

If you want to maximize your time on the water and put fish in the net, you need to use nymphs…and small ones at that. If you are like my co-host, Ed, then this is bad news for you.

Here is what I told him last time on the water:

1. Fish two nymphs. This drastically ups your chances. I like to use a weighted bead head on top (i.e. size 16-18 pheasant tail) followed by smaller midge on bottom (i.e. size 18-22 zebra midge).

2. Real men use a strike indicator. The type may matter. If you’re fishing super clear water, use one that won’t hit hard. If you’re fishing deeper holes, it won’t matter as much.

3. Pay attention to Depth. Add weight to the top fly or bottom fly if you need to. Fish slow down and hold in deeper pools. This helps them save energy.

4. Set lightly. Pay attention to the slightest of “bumps.” The takes during winter are much more subtle. It’s easier to rip the fly out of the trout’s mouth.

5. Cast slowly. Everything slows down in winter. Slow down, you’ll spook fewer fish. Especially with your cast. A simple roll cast may be your best friend.

Fly fishing always takes patience. But in winter, it takes the most.

Be willing to do what you need to in order to see more success. In winter, that usually means nymphing.

But keep a few small Parachute Adams handy, just in case you find a riser.

The Little Guys

Most anglers have a hard time not thinking of the Big Fish. Doesn’t matter what kind of fisherman you are; in the world of fishing the stories you hear always seem to be about a particular “hog” or incredible “pig.”

Thus, the mind tends to wonder about how to keep up. How do I find my own new “Slab Story”?

It’s inevitable.

With the introduction of social media and fish porn to contend with, YouTube is a blessing and a curse.

An angler can find an instructional video on how to tie any fly they want. Total game changer!

But an angler can also burn an afternoon watching some really cool videos of fisherman hooking “monsters,” playing them until their arms hurt. All in some incredibly exotic places!!

Naturally, the mind wanders.

Social media platforms are abound with still shots of people getting their “PB,” the smiles on their faces seemingly as long as the fish they are holding. Look at them long enough and you start to see yourself holding that fish.

It’s the influence of the “Big Dawg.” Every fisherman has a secret desire to walk into their man cave and lock eyes on the giant stuffed fish hanging on the wall, evidence of a Hall of Fame worthy epic day.

We humans have an unexplained need to highlight our greatness.

Fisherman may be the worst.

But what’s wrong with the little guys? Does it make me any less of a fisherman if I take to the high country, in search of remote creeks that hold the smaller fish? To be fair, every one of those “donkeys” were once small fish, weren’t they?

And while there are certainly some beautiful big fish, the prettiest fish I’ve caught tend to be the ones from the smaller creeks where no one goes. That’s where most brookies and the other worldly green back cutthroats are found.

And for my money, you won’t find a more beautiful trout than those.

It’s easy to get stuck in the world of “what ifs.” I can imagine myself in a lot of beautifully cool places fishing for “torpedoes.” But the reality is that my backyard is full of remote fishing, where I can hike a trout stream and not see another fisherman.

I don’t have a whole lot of “Big Fish” stories, but I have a ton of incredible memories of the remote beauty that a good walk with a fly rod can provide.

And while sitting around the table, sipping beers with some guys swapping stories about the time they caught the “Big One” are worth a laugh, moments when I can share the remote beauty of hiking a good trout stream with a friend are priceless.

One Piece of Content

The boys at Wild Fly have made some of our favorite content. So many of their films have brought us to extraordinary fisheries. Here, they take a different approach. While Google might say South Dakota is boring, this film proves otherwise for those of us who love adventure. Curiosity

Have you ever wondered, "How can I be more likeable?"

As it turns out, the curiosity you display by asking that question is itself the key to being more likeable.

A Harvard study found that people who ask open-ended, curious questions in conversations, are perceived as more likable and trustworthy.

We've all been in those one-sided conversations where the other person rambles on without asking a single question.

You might be tempted to jump in with your own story just to give them a breather. But resist that urge.

Instead of darting away to “grab another beer,” lean in.

Having genuine curiosity and shining the spotlight on others builds stronger connections.

In today’s world where everyone battles to be seen, being the observer has become a rare and valued trait. The above-mentioned study concludes with the powerful statement:

How can you put this into practice? Start with active listening and genuine curiosity.

Next time someone shares something, ask a thoughtful follow-up question to dig deeper. Your curiosity signals a reason to connect.

Before long, you may find that curiosity creates lasting bonds and new fishing buddies.

Most fly fisherman go through a period of depression when the seasons pass from fall to winter. Gone are the days of dropping dry flies, watching unsuspecting trout devour it.

Winter brings more layers, thicker socks, and double nymph rigs with strike indicators.

However, if you can bare the elements, the fishing can be epic!

The best tip for winter fish, is to play ‘small ball.’

You may not believe it, but fish still eat bugs in the winter. The bugs just get really small.

Water begins to move slow. The fish begin to move even slower. And as with anything that moves slow, there is more time to analyze what they are eating.

Thus, the most successful winter fishing involves fishing a size 22 midge pattern… and that’s your TOP fly!

It’s not uncommon to find guys casting size 26 flies. We have even heard of 32’s and I am ashamed to say I can’t see that, even when it is in the palm of my hand.

They are the younger fisherman, for sure.

But lucky for us hard-of-seeing guys, this is where the ‘ball’ in small ball comes in. Throw on an indicator 2 feet up from your top fly, and cash in all the free hook sets you can. The slightest twitch can be a fish in this slow-moving season.

Do this, and before your nose drip freezes into a booger icicle, you will be ‘fish on!’

Bonus tip: Black, red and purple are our go to colors.

Winter fly fishing provides a solitude we rarely find at other times of the year. Probably because it’s for the diehards.

But when you get a good day, the fish are gorgeous!

Adventure awaits. Go get ‘em!

Year Defining Goal

Maybe AI will get better at images this year?

Welcome to the new year, 2025! We are likely the 27th email who has wished you a happy occasion, so we won’t belabor the point too much. And if you came here for fishy writing, bear with me, as we aren’t catching any fish today.

The turning of the calendar means it is “Resolution Szn”! And since today is January 2nd, it is possible you have already caved to the siren call of cookie dough ice cream.

If not, studies say 23% of you will tap out by the 7th… Good luck.

Resolutions suck. They never work.

And I have a theory why.

They add no real meaning to our life. They don’t make it better. They are an empty promise that in most ways take something from us, rather than enrich our days.

Sure, for some of us, losing the weight may make life meaningfully better, adding back years a poor diet tried to steal from our life expectancy.

Quitting drinking may fill us up with new fulfilling relationships. But the temporary pain of losing the destructive relationships we hold so close, is too much for many of us to go through.

Or starting that new habit of running every day, “in the name of being healthier,” sounds awesome! Until your legs awake you with screams to stop, three days later.

And so, we fail.

But WAIT! What if I told you there were a sure-fire way to stick to that resolution?!

The Way

If you have listened to our podcast, you have heard me blabber on about my marathon. Sorry to listeners looking for expert fishing talk, who received mediocre runner’s talk.

In 2024, I set myself a “year defining goal” of running a marathon. The only criteria I set for myself is that I had to run a marathon by the end of calendar year 2025. I worked backwards from there, setting some structure and using the free Nike Running Plan.

It was a big ask of myself. I hadn’t run longer than 3 miles since high school. And on the first day I laced up in 2024, I ran at a glacial 11min/mile pace (Olympians would have nearly lapped me…twice). And at the end, I was dying.

But instead of quitting three days later, I had a year defining experience planned. I was creating a story that I could brag about to the readers of this newsletter, one day. That day happens to be today.

Since our life is only a series of meaningful stories, I was out to create meaning in my life.

No one was going to read “man lost 15 pounds in 2024” on my tombstone. And frankly, no one is going to read “ran a marathon in 2024.” But there is a better chance that “marathoner” would end up on a tombstone than “weightlosser.”

So, as we go headlong into 2025, instead of setting that meaningless resolution, set a year defining goal that you may be able to put on your tombstone. “Angler.” “Adventurer.” “Musician.”

Dream big. I believe in you.

With that, have a fantastic 2025! I hope to see you on the water.

Being a beginner is always uncomfortable. Beginner’s luck is one of a few basic outcomes. This is either due to you absorbing the teaching provided, reading the rules of the game, or pure divine luck handed down from above. But beginner’s luck never strikes twice. You will always feel uncomfortable, if not on the first day, definitely the second.

Alex had to get over it. He wasn’t picking up fly fishing as fast as he wanted. Seth was patient when they were able to fish together, but no fishing buddy is around 24/7. They have lives too, and step number one of being a good fishing buddy is realizing that. So, Alex had to go out and practice the craft on his own. By himself. Alone.

There are few other sports that can be more aggravating to start on your own than fly fishing. Unless you live on water, you are driving 15 minutes at least (but more likely over an hour) to a spot “you heard about.” Once there, you have to get your gear on - call it another 15 minutes. Then once you have that accomplished, you have to start rigging up your rod, reel, fly line, select a fly, size your tippet and tie on. Call it another 30 minutes. So, let’s conservatively say you are 1 hour and 45 minutes out from home before you start casting. Note this is not expressed as ‘fishing.’

As a beginner, this sport may as well be called ‘fly casting.’ You don’t get to do a whole lot of catching. This is the time offering you must give to the fishing gods that oversee this water. Sure there may be a flash or two that keep you coming back, and over time that grows into landing a fish and figuring it out. But at the beginning, it is rough.

Alex had to learn to be comfortable with this sacrifice of time. He was able to get out into nature. He would learn down the road that this was the reason he was doing it in the first place. But at this moment in time, it didn’t feel that way. Alex had been on the water for a couple hours at this point. He had snagged in two trees and countless willow bushes, snapped off 8 flies and counting, and had not yet seen a fish.

“Fuck me. What else can I do?!” Alex critiqued in his head. He wasn’t one to speak out loud much on the water, counter to a lot of anglers who only think out loud. “I guess I’ll try another fly. Maybe this green one will work. Lots of bugs are green, and this one looks… buggy.”

Alex tied it on and trudged up to the next big boulder on the water. Unbeknownst to him it was one of those picture perfect holes that some anglers would consider “River Porn.” It stood 3 feet out of the water on the right side of the river against the bank. Behind it the river bent into its back, forcing a riffle rolling around the left side. The current created a trail of oxygenated water. The bubbles along the surface would be perfect camouflage for his wind-knotted tippet.

His first cast fell off to the right, almost along the bank. Not on purpose, but as a result of his beginner skill level. He made a correct mental note that he had enough line out, and another wrong mental note on why his line landed where it did. Alex pulled the line out of the water, false casted three times to “dry it off” and laid it down. Miraculously in the bubbles. His randomly chosen Green Drake dry fly didn’t immediately catch his eye. He scanned the water as if looking for an overboard passenger, hoping to see it bobbing, arms flailing for help. As quick as he found it, it disappeared. He began scanning again. “It was right there!” he said to himself.

The line went taught. “Hmmm, weird. Oh yeah?!” He set the hook. Way too hard. Sending a 6-inch brown trout screaming by his head. He ‘battled’ the fish in, reeling as fast as he could. Four seconds later, Alex exhumed the fish from the water, dangling it over his net. He had caught his first fish on a fly. On his own.

He thought out loud for once, “Woo! Hells yes! Look at that beauty! I wonder what kind that is?! Probably a rainbow.”

He would later learn it was a Brown Trout. All six inches of it. It would take him three more angling seasons to learn to identify his own fish. Today, he didn’t care. He had caught a fish on his own. And the fishing gods initiated him as a full-fledged, card-holding “Angler.”

90 Minutes to Better Fishing: The Annual Review

We are sliding right into the winter doldrums of trout fishing in the United States. Maybe it is just Mother Nature and US Department of Wildlife teaming up to encourage us to spend more time with our families during the holidays. Who knows?

But this time of year is when the act of fishing takes a back seat for most anglers.

Some people dust off the vise. Others, as we heard on this week’s podcast, plan trips on TroutRoutes for next year.

For me, this time of year is all about the annual review. Yes, similar to the one that you dread attending with your boss or delivering to your subordinates.

But more personal.

Sure there are many beneficial outcomes of doing your own personal annual review (here is the one I personally do).

And while we do encourage you to do that, we are going to suggest going deeper and more personal:

…into your fishing life.

This time of year is perfect to do a review of how your favorite past time, well, passed the time this year.

So grab a piece of paper, a pen and a simple timer (your phone probably has one), and saddle up. In less than 90 minutes of time, you will be ready to slay 2025. These are the 8 questions to ask about 2024 that will change your fishing game:

Best way to work through this is to set a 10 minute timer for each question, and write out as much as you can for each. Once done, don’t read what you wrote. Instead, move on to the next question and restart that timer. At the end, you will have plenty of time to go back and review/change/etc. Good Luck!

What was your best day of fishing?

Let’s start basic. This should be an easy question.

It may come right to the top of your mind. Hell, it may be the only day you fished this year.

Once you have it (and yes, it is ok to have a couple that tie, but pick just one for this exercise), take a minute to write down everything you can remember about that day.

What fish you caught? Where it was? Who was with you? What was the weather like?

Who, What, Where, When, Why, that b*tch.

When your hand starts to cramp, or the timer dings, move on to the next question.

What was your worst day of fishing?

I don’t want to have to repeat myself, so see question #1. I believe in you.

How is your gear?

This is the one question that may take a bit longer to review, but for the sake of this exercise, let’s not get out of the chair quite yet. When we have made it through all of these questions, I do encourage you to pull everything out and take a look.

Think about times on the water this year that your gear was really working for you. Now think about when it wasn’t. What gear was your favorite to fish with? Is there anything you are out of?

The first that comes to mind for me this year is a 5wt. reel that I absolutely HATE. Almost makes me never want to pick up the 5wt rod, and may have exclusively made me a 3wt. or an 8wt. fly fisherman. The reel’s drag system has a knob that spins and spins, but only three little ticks matter on the resistance.

Maybe this is something I want to replace this year? Maybe I now know how to make 2025 a better fishing year. Back to this later…

When it came to fishing, what fear held you back?

Ok, we just got deep. But let’s keep it a wadeable depth.

Maybe there was a trip you really wanted to go on this year, but something held you back.

“I don’t believe I can cast well enough to target bonefish.” (Take a lesson, or six)

“I don’t think I can afford that adventure.” (Is there a cheaper, more DIY way to do it?)

“I am afraid to reach out to the fly shop to find out where to fish, or if they have any trips they are guiding.” (We hear you, some fly shops can be a bit prickly)

Whatever it is, get it on paper, and once you can see the fear you can start planning an attack or way around it.

Who was your best fishing buddy?

You have carte blanche on how you answer this.

Maybe it is your buddy, who always makes fishing fun and creates a day full of laughter.

Maybe it is your dad who spins tall tales of fish that got away.

Maybe it is a drinking buddy.

Whoever it is, write their name down and what it is you enjoy about fishing with them.

Create more time for them in 2025.

What did you learn and/or change your mind about?

Most fishermen never learn. Or so they say. Too stubborn to admit they didn’t know in the first place.

But this is a question that shows you how far you have come in a year.

You may say to yourself, “oh geez, where to even begin?!” and the pen starts scribbling.

If you can’t think of anything, then you haven’t pushed yourself to new enough adventures, places, or species. Which brings us to our next question…

What is a fishing trip on your bucket list?

What is that trip that will push you out of your comfort zone? That fish species that you have seen on the centerfold of your favorite magazine. I said ‘fish’…

Maybe there are a bunch of trips. Your pen, your timer. Write them all down.

If there is only one, write down everything you think you know about this trip. What you want the trip to be like? What would make the trip successful?

Just keep writing until the timer dings. You have permission to dream a little!

What do you want out of fishing?

Again, let’s stay wadeable depth here. If you are feeling confident, go ahead and scale that waterfall.

But what is it you really want out of fishing? Is it an escape from the noise of the city? Is it a memory? Is it a taxidermy of the largest 8-inch Brook Trout you ever caught?

Maybe it is a better fishing buddy? Or an annual trip that you can create lasting bonds around? (Shameless plug for GFW).

Whatever it is, write it down. Try to move towards this in 2025.

There you have it! If you did this right, you got the whole thing done in under 90 minutes. Take a break, you earned it.

But come back and review this list in depth. Take some time to think about what would make 2025 the fishiest year yet.

Also, now is probably a good time to go back and actually pull out that gear you have neglected all year and do a real deep dive. There are loads of good deals from local fly shops across the country, so support local for all those stocking stuffers.

Q: Hey guys! You seem to have some pretty epic fishing stories, but I'm curious, what was the toughest day of fishing you had as a group? I imagine there must have been days when nothing went right. I'd love to hear any tips you have for staying positive in those tough times.

A: “A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.” Duh.

You don’t look satisfied. Fine, you are right a bad day of fishing at times can feel like a wasted day. We have had plenty of days where nothing seemed right. Days where curse words were the primary parts of speech. Brutal.

There is no easy fix if you went into the day with expectations of grandeur. That is step one. Check your expectations before you even throw your gear in the trunk to head out for the day.

Step two, assuming you did step one, is to lift your head up and look around. The fact that you are able to be out there, in nature, doing this thing we love (even when it doesn’t feel like we should) is an amazing blessing. Soak that shit in.

Social Courage One Fly At A Time

Ed’s First Woolly Worm

I was nervous. I am not going to lie.

My first fly tying class. Initiation into the dark arts of fly fishing.

I am not sure why I was nervous. Everyone else in this class was new to this craft, so I wasn’t going to stand out. We were all equals.

Maybe it was my wallet yelling out at me, “uh sir, haven’t you heard from all the other fly tyers you know that this is not a good way to save money on flies?! It is an expensive hobby and we do have a family to feed.”

That is a valid point, but not worthy of nerves before even trying it.

Or maybe it was that only old people tie flies? Am I getting old? Fuck… I am old now.

None of these were reasons that I was nervous. And I knew it walking in.

I knew it before I even picked up the phone to sign up for the class.

I knew it 18 months ago, when I first found out about it, and put it off as something I would do one day.

In fact, I knew it was the exact thing that had held me back for years.

Q: Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of what you guys have going on with your annual fishing trips. I'd love to organize something similar for my own group of friends, but I'm struggling to know where to start. Do you have any tips on planning a successful fishing weekend? What do you focus on to make it memorable time for everyone involved? - Chris (Buffalo, NY)

A: There is a lot to unpack with this question because the end of it is how do you make it memorable for everybody? Finding the time to do it and selling your friends that they should take four days out of their busy life to do this, is the hardest part.

But how to make it memorable? One of the most important things in the way that ours started was making it something that everybody felt like they could accomplish. Whether it was financially, skill-wise, distance, just make it enjoyable in general.

When you get guys together, they find ways to make things memorable. But I think if you can remove a lot of the stress of, I can't afford that, I can't make time for that, I am not good enough at doing X, Y, and Z to not feel like a loser in front of everybody. If you can remove a lot of those friction points for people, that frees up a lot of mental bandwidth to make it memorable.

You could do a trip to the middle of a cornfield and fish out of a ditch if you're with guys you enjoy spending time with… it's gonna be memorable.

As we have always been DIY fisherman, hitting the road to explore new places to fish is almost irresistible.

Yes, there are lodges and camps that provide guides and accommodations to ensure success and comfort. However, there is something incredibly satisfying and gratifying when you do the leg work to find water with your own resources.

And when it pans out and you are successful, well the feeling is unparalleled!

When we started GFW, the idea for a weekend fishing with the boys was steeped in it’s affordability. None of us had the money for swanky places. But we still wanted that lodge like experience for ourselves.

So, our DIY spirit crafts our core philosophy and approach to fishing. We like to be self sufficient. And there is no better way to do this than hitting the open road to find fish and adventure, which we hold dear to our hearts!

With 28 years (and counting) of experience, here are three things that will help you have a successful Fishing Road Trip:

A: Woah, heady question. While we don’t like to think about us only fishing in one more new location, we will give it our best shot! Today, our answer would be Belize, chasing Permit, Tarpon and Bonefish. Chasing these legends in the jungles and beaches of Belize would be a dream come true. A dream we hope to come true sooner rather than later! Ask us again tomorrow and our answer may change, but today we are dreaming of Belize!

This book holds a special place, as my mom gave this to me during a particularly tough time in my life. It was a gift to help me gain perspective. David James Duncan is at the top of my favorite author’s list, as his writing style gifts me moments of out loud laughter, deep thought, and overwhelming emotion. Most of all, this book provides opportunities abound to reflect. Duncan uses the metaphor of the fallen tree in a river and it’s expansive change through time to understand the human experience. Every fisherman can relate on some level, as we love the structure such fallen trees provide. Perhaps, that is why I love this collection of essays and stories so much.

Fishing for Understanding: A Dad's Tale of Release

The Release

She wasn’t being reasonable.

At least, in my eyes she wasn’t. There were tears, there were sobs, there was a lack of oxygen. Teenagers can be that way when their world is seemingly on the verge of collapse. It meant everything to her; why couldn’t I see that?

I have a way of casually dismissing things when I can’t find the importance of it. It could be anything from my daughter’s reaction to a negative comment she got on social media to my wife asking me which earrings I like better (which, by the way, you’d think I could pick correctly more often with a 50/50 shot)…”who cares?”

That’s my common thought when these seemingly trivial matters present themselves to me. Who actually gives a crap!

So, how does an aging dad, who is gradually losing his ability to be cool in the eyes of most, teach the ones he loves to deal with these seemingly little things of life by not caring?

The Master of Unstructured Play

Back in my day…I know, I know…anytime you hear those words there’s an automatic responsive eye roll that occurs.

But seriously, back in my day, we had a shit ton more unstructured time.

I want to say unstructured “play” time, but as soon as I do, somehow it seems to lose credibility because we associate play with immaturity. And accordingly, immaturity lacks wisdom. Throw the word “play” into any sentence or situation and it seems to lose credibility.

Now, add in the word “unstructured” to the word “play” and most people see pure chaos! Images of kids jumping on furniture, painting walls with lipstick, and climbing up the fridge to get to the cookie jar on top.

For many, these visions bring anxiety and panic.

If Life Had GPS: Rediscovering the Joy of Getting Lost

Typically, people think about the word navigation from the stand point of directions. At least, people from my generation do. I know I’m dating myself here, and here it comes:

…back in my day, we didn’t have GPS on a little computer in our pockets. We had maps, literally.

Growing up in a family of five, I was exposed to maps and road trips at a young age. Living in south Florida, with the family origin in New Jersey and New York, we often road tripped north to see the grand parents. Navigating meant getting out the TripTik Travel Planner from Triple A (this was a flip chart thingy containing the mapped route of your destination).

Looking at the map with my old man brings fond memories, and I have always been good with directions, in large part due to the time spent navigating maps with him before we would leave.

Perhaps the word “navigation” has always had the connotation to other aspects of life than just direction. But for me, using the word to help my understanding of the difficulties in the world was eye opening.

“One Of Those Days”

How often have you found yourself muttering, “…one of those days.” What were you yammering on about?

We’ve all had those days out on the river, when we show up with the hope of what will surely be an epic day! After excitedly rigging up and scampering to the water, we forget to do the little things…like look behind us before we cast. The first back cast ends up snagged in a tree, and the typical moves to try and unsnag have no effect.

The only option is to snap it all off and retie. Inevitably, you mumble to yourself, out loud, “Well, I guess it’s going to be one of those days.”

Here’s a fun little jaunt to the Green River from Brody Sanderson and his buddy Elan Powless. The two take us on a three day journey into some secluded water where they put a BUNCH of pretty fish in the nets. The best part about this cool little video is the energy these two bring to fishing. It is clear they are having a blast, and their sense of adventure inspires even the most senior fisherman. Ah, to be young again! Thanks @brodysanderson for a great fishing video!

The one thing every “first” has in common with another is fear.

It’s a weird emotion, fear. It can literally cause a physical reaction of profuse sweating and flushed skin. It can cause the mind to go totally blank. It can make a person stand still…frozen.

It’s powerful.

Like the first time you wade across a “full” river, trying to navigate the unstable slimy, mossy rocks. The force of the water forces each step to miss its intended target, causing you to wobble like a new born Bambi.

As the southern most trout fishery in the US, the Guadalupe River offers anglers a shot at some beautifully big trout. Although the trout fishing came come to a halt in the warm months of summer, there is no need to worry, as you can focus your attention on the monster stripers, smallmouth and largemouth bass. Any time we have a shot at multiple species of amazing fish, we are on board! Super stoked to get on the Guadalupe!

This is an incredible short film from @gilbertrowley. He provides us with a look into the quest for tiger trout feeding on Damsel flies. As one of the greatest sources of food for trout, the Damsel is one that’s not at the top of my list of go to flies. However, after watching this film, it will be. Gilbert provides incredible cinematography of feeding fish and the joy that comes with hooking them. The shots in this short film are absolutely amazing. If you’re like us, you will find yourself smiling throughout. This is a real gem!

We first want to highlight the devastation that has occurred from Hurricane Helene across the east coast. Many in the GFW Community were affected by the storm, and many more have risen to the call of helping out where they can, with sending supplies and donations to these areas.

As you receive this, Hurricane Milton will have made landfall in Florida. Described as one of the strongest storms on record for the Atlantic side of the globe, it presumably will do even more damage than its predecessor. To the extent you are able, please find ways to help Florida and the east coast. Information on how to donate time and money to FEMA is provided below, and we will keep featuring other organizations in the upcoming weeks. Do not hesitate to reach out if you need further information on how to help out.

In Memoriam: John Gierach

One of our great American writers has moved on to the trout stream in the sky this past week. John Gierach, with his thoughtful prose and timeless wit, inspired countless anglers and readers alike to embrace the art of fly fishing and the natural world around them. His writing didn’t just celebrate fishing but the entire experience of being connected to nature - the stillness, the challenges, the camaraderie, and the moments of pure joy that often come unexpectedly.

Gierach had an uncanny ability to capture the beauty in the ordinary, weaving stories that resonated with anyone who had ever felt the pull of the wild. Whether you were a seasoned angler or someone simply curious about the sport, his words could make you feel as though you were standing knee-deep in a stream, listening to the water rush by.

While John may no longer be casting his line in earthly waters, his legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the lives he touched, and the countless anglers who continue to explore the waters he so vividly brought to life. He left with us with so many quotable lines that keep us inspired on the water and longing to take in the great outdoors. Here are 10 of our favorites:

• “We didn’t fish, we just looked; something every fisherman should take the time to do now and then. Leave the rods in the car for once and just take it all in like a tourist.”

   Take a minute and lift your head up every now and then.

• “Big fish are what we want, but they’re like true love, success, lots of money, or maybe public office: we don’t know why we want them, but we figure that will take care of itself if we ever connect.”

“On The Road Again”

To my wife’s dismay, I am not one for country music. Can’t really explain why, but it just isn’t for me, unless it’s in the form of Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash. In stealing the title of one of Willie’s greatest tunes, “On the Road Again,” it fits perfectly for one of my favorite parts of our annual Guys Fishing Weekend trips.

We road trip just about everywhere we go, because it seems to make better memories and provide us opportunities to connect in ways flying doesn’t.

Each year, we load up a couple of few vehicles, usually trucks, and hit the road for at least a few hours. Sometimes longer, but it’s usually a good three in the car together.

The connection that happens during this time is priceless. It’s where we update, get caught up on…

Herman Hesse writes a classic story of the journey for discovery in his novel, Siddhartha. What makes this book so wonderful, is the protagonist’s unfolding understanding that experiences throughout our lives create the totality of who we become. While intellectual methodology and theory provide insight, the events in our lives are what shape us. This book resonates as we continue to explore different experiences in our lives, what they teach us, and how we can grow from them. Just like Siddhartha.

This gem from @blufflinemedia brings us to the area in Minnesota known as Driftless. Most people associate MN with lakes…as they should! However, the incredible tributaries of the Driftless area in southeastern Minnesota are a fly fishing paradise. This wonderful film provides a stunning portrait of yet another trip to put at the top of your list.

What We Are Reading

Whether you are a novice, middle of the road fisherman, or one that fishes so often, you could start your own guide service (maybe you have), David Coggins’ book, The Optimist, has something for you. Through the descriptions of his experiences, he explains thoughts anglers from all walks of life have had time and time again while out on the water. This is his true gift…relatability. This book in particular covers technique, fishing for different species, but more importantly the life skills we can draw and use from our obsession with fishing.

Old Salt Fishing Foundation

Conservation plays a vital role in preserving the fisheries we share across the country. But education programs serve an equally important purpose for understanding the different environments we choose to fish. When these two components come together to serve a community, we should feel grateful. With the Old Salt Foundation, that’s exactly what we have.

The work they do comes from a rooted belief in the science of fisheries, and for 52 years, they have been working (voluntarily) to support that science in an effort to preserve what they are lucky to have. They run fishing tournaments for old and young fisherman alike, as well as regular meetings and seminars to educate the community. With GFW’s steadfast belief in the power of community, we are proud to feature the Old Salt Fishing Foundation this week.

Sometimes You Just Know

There are moments in time that come with feelings of unrest. You cast into a nice deep run for half an hour without any action at all. A total blank.

The half hour turns into an hour. Doubt creeps into everything you do, and questions seem to permeate your thoughts…Do I have the right flies? Do I need to add weight? Am I getting the flies in front of the fish?

These times can make a fisherman feel like a teenage boy making his first play to talk to the crush of his life. Awkward, self-doubting, unsure. And the crazy part is that the longer the fish ignore you, the less you feel your worthiness as a fisherman.

What We Are Reading

As two of the boys from GFW have recently called it quits on their teaching careers and another has ventured out of the corporate grind, this book was recommended to help with the transition. Short and to the point, Riley Moynes offers valuable advice and provides important concepts to consider and think about as we navigate this huge transition in our lives. If anyone is considering a move in this direction, this book is super helpful.

He’s Gone

I don’t know how it happened so fast! First he was there, and so quickly, he is gone. The presentation was perfect. The drift…one of the best of the day! Hell yea, it resulted in a sophisticated, confident take. Even the most elderly, knowledgeable fish would have taken that fly. It was that good!

The hook set was even better. Timed it perfectly, just the right rod tip raise with the perfect tension. So good, that fish was pissed!

But then…one jump, one acrobatic launch in the air, with his head and body shaking like Elvis Presley’s hips. That one last ditch effort of a violent thrash, and…

Little formal research has been done to help this incredible species thrive and survive.
