Paper 2 Section A is always multiple choice. These questions can pick apart tiny details from the specification, so keep your knowledge sharp across topics 1, 2, 4 and 6!

Immune Response & Antibodies 🛡️

Know the difference between non-specific defences (skin, inflammation) and the specific immune response (T and B lymphocytes). You must be able to draw and label an antibody (variable region, constant region, hinge region, disulfide bridges). Understand opsonisation, agglutination, and how vaccines provide active immunity.

Biodiversity & Simpson's Index 🦜

Define biodiversity (habitat, species, and genetic). Be ready to calculate Simpson's Index of Diversity, a high value means a stable ecosystem.

Succession 🌲

Describe the process from pioneer species colonising bare rock (primary succession) to the formation of a climax community. Understand how species alter the abiotic conditions to make the environment less hostile for new species.

Classification 🦁

Know the taxonomic hierarchy (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species). Be familiar with the Five Kingdoms vs. the Three Domains (Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya) and the evidence used in classification (cytochrome c, DNA sequences).

Genetic Diversity 🧬

How do we assess genetic diversity? Look at the proportion of polymorphic gene loci

Genetic Inheritance & Hardy-Weinberg 🧮

This is a big one! Be comfortable with monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, codominance, epistasis and sex linkage. You must know how to use the Hardy-Weinberg equations (p + q = 1 and p² + 2pq + q² = 1) to calculate allele frequencies. Remember the assumptions (large population, no migration, etc.).

Speciation 🌋

How do new species form? Compare allopatric speciation (geographical isolation) and sympatric speciation (reproductive isolation within the same area).

Cellular Control ⚙️

How are genes regulated? Revise the lac operon in E. coli (repressor protein, operator, promoter). Understand homeobox genes (Hox genes) in the control of body plan development and how apoptosis shapes tissues (like removing webbing between fingers).

Gel Electrophoresis ⚡

A key practical technique. Know how DNA fragments are separated by size using an electric current (DNA is negatively charged so moves to the anode).

Biotechnology (Food Production) 🧀

The use of microorganisms! Explain the benefits and risks of using microorganisms in industrial processes including food production.

Immobilised Enzymes 🔒

Why do we use them? They are more stable and the product isn't contaminated with the enzyme. Know the methods: adsorption, covalent bonding, entrapment, and membrane separation.

Bacterial Growth & Aseptic Technique 🧫

The standard growth curve: lag phase, log phase, stationary phase, death phase. Be able to explain aseptic techniques to prevent contamination during practicals (flaming necks of bottles, working near a Bunsen flame).

These topics are fundamental and often bridge the gap between Paper 1 and Paper 2, or appear in the Unified Paper 3.

ATP Structure and Function 🔋

The universal energy currency. Adenine + Ribose + 3 Phosphates. Hydrolysis releases energy for metabolism.

Enzymes & Cofactors 🧩

Induced-fit model. Factors affecting rate (Temperature, pH). Cofactors (inorganic ions), Coenzymes (organic, e.g., NAD), and Prosthetic groups (tightly bound, e.g., Zn²⁺ in carbonic anhydrase).

Protein Synthesis 🏗️

transcription (nucleus) → mRNA → translation (ribosome/RER) → polypeptide.

Lipid Structure 🧈

Triglycerides (glycerol + 3 fatty acids) vs Phospholipids. Ester bonds. Saturated vs Unsaturated.

Mitosis & Cell Cycle 🔄

• IAA (Indoleacetic Acid): Controls tropisms.

Weimar and Nazi Germany (Option 31) Edexcel GCSE History Paper 3 📚 Revision Guide: The 2026 Predictions

1. Nazi attempts to control the Catholic and Protestant Churches ⛪️

Hitler wanted total loyalty to him, not God. The Christian churches were a threat because they had a different set of morals and millions of followers.

• The Catholic Church:

  • The Concordat (1933): Hitler signed an agreement with the Pope. He promised not to interfere with Catholic schools and youth groups if the Church stayed out of politics.

  • Broken Promises: Hitler quickly broke this. Catholic schools were closed, and the Catholic Youth League was banned. Priests were harassed and arrested (sent to the "Priest Block" at Dachau).

  • 'With Burning Anxiety' (1937): The Pope wrote a letter (encyclical) smuggling it into Germany to be read out in churches, condemning Nazi beliefs.

  • Bishop Galen: A brave Catholic Bishop who spoke out against the Nazi euthanasia policy (killing disabled people). He was so popular the Nazis were afraid to arrest him during the war.

• The Protestant Church:

  • The Reich Church: The Nazis tried to unite all Protestant churches into one "Reich Church" led by Ludwig Müller (the Reich Bishop). They replaced the cross with the Swastika and the Bible with Mein Kampf on the altar.

  • The Confessing Church: Many pastors refused to join the Reich Church. Martin Niemöller and Dietrich Bonhoeffer set up the "Confessing Church" to oppose Nazi interference. Niemöller was sent to a concentration camp; Bonhoeffer was executed.

2. Reasons for Hitler becoming Chancellor in 1933 🏛️

It wasn't just one thing—it was a mix of luck, strategy, and the weakness of others.

• The Great Depression (Economic Reason): After the Wall Street Crash (1929), Germany collapsed. Unemployment hit 6 million. People were desperate and turned to extremist parties like the Nazis (who promised "Work and Bread") and the Communists.

• Weakness of the Weimar Republic (Political Reason): The government couldn't solve the economic crisis. The coalition governments kept collapsing, and the Chancellor had to rule by decree (Article 48), looking like a dictator anyway.

• Nazi Tactics: They used brilliant propaganda (Goebbels), mass rallies, and Hitler’s speeches to win support. The SA (Brownshirts) beat up opponents, making the Nazis look strong and organised.

• Political Scheming (The Trigger): This is key! Hitler didn't win a majority. He was appointed. Conservative politicians Von Papen and Hindenburg thought they could use Hitler's popularity but control him like a puppet. They were very wrong. 🤡

3. Reasons why life for women in Germany changed (1933-39) 👩‍👧‍👦

The Nazis had a very traditional view of women, summed up by the "Three Ks": Kinder, Küche, Kirche (Children, Kitchen, Church).

• To Increase the Birth Rate: Germany needed soldiers for the future.

  • Marriage Loans: Newlyweds got a loan of 1,000 marks. For every child born, they could keep 250 marks.

  • The Motherhood Cross: Medals were awarded on Hitler’s mother’s birthday for having huge families (Bronze for 4, Silver for 6, Gold for 8!).

• To Reduce Unemployment Stats:

  • Women were pushed out of professional jobs (doctors, teachers, lawyers) so those jobs could go to men.

  • This made the unemployment figures look better because women weren't counted as "unemployed" if they were at home!

• Later Changes (1937+): As Germany prepared for war (rearmament), men joined the army, and there was a labour shortage. Suddenly, the Nazis needed women back in the factories. Policy flipped from "stay at home" to "duty year" work.

4. Challenges to the Weimar Republic (1919-23) 💥

The early years of the Republic were chaos. They faced threats from every direction.

• The Treaty of Versailles: The Germans hated it. They called it a Diktat (dictated peace). The government was blamed for signing it ("The November Criminals") and for the "Stab in the Back" myth.

• Threat from the Left (The Spartacists, 1919): Communists tried to take over Berlin. The government was so weak it had to use the Freikorps (ex-soldiers who hated communists) to crush the revolt.

• Threat from the Right (The Kapp Putsch, 1920): The Freikorps turned on the government and marched on Berlin. The army refused to stop them ("Troops do not fire on troops"). The government only survived because the workers went on strike.

• The Crisis of 1923:

  • Invasion of the Ruhr: France invaded to take reparations in goods (coal/steel). Workers went on passive resistance strike.

  • Hyperinflation: The government printed money to pay the striking workers. Money became worthless. Bread cost billions of marks. Savings were wiped out.

• Time: 1 hour 30 minutes ⏳

• Total Marks: 52

Section A:

• Question 1 (4 marks): "Give two things you can infer from Source A..."

  • Tip: Don't just copy the source! Say what it suggests (Inference) and back it up with a detail (Evidence).

• Question 2 (12 marks): "Explain why..."

  • Note: You usually get a choice of two questions here. Pick the one you are most confident on! You need 3 clear paragraphs (PEEL) linking back to the question.

Section B (The Historical Enquiry):

• Question 3a (8 marks): "How useful are Sources B and C..."

  • Tip: Discuss the Content (what it says) and the Provenance (Nature, Origin, Purpose) for both sources.

• Question 3b (4 marks): "What is the main difference between the views..."

  • Tip: Keep it simple. Interpretation 1 says X, but Interpretation 2 says Y.

• Question 3c (4 marks): "Suggest one reason why Interpretations 1 and 2 give different views..."

  • Tip: Look at the sources they used or the historian's focus. One might look at a specific group (e.g., women), while the other looks at the whole country.

• Question 3d (16 marks + 4 SPaG): "How far do you agree with Interpretation 2..."

  • Tip: This is the big one! You need to discuss both interpretations and use your own knowledge to decide which one is more convincing.

The USA, 1954–75: conflict at home and abroad (Option 33) Edexcel GCSE History Paper 3 📚 Revision Guide: The 2026 Predictions

1. Brown v. Topeka (1954) ⚖️

This was a turning point for Civil Rights in education.

• The Issue: Schools in the South were segregated (separate for Black and White students) under the "Jim Crow" laws. The 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling said facilities could be "separate but equal," but they rarely were.

• The Case: Linda Brown had to walk past a white school to get to her black school further away. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and their lawyer, Thurgood Marshall, took the case to the Supreme Court.

• The Ruling: Chief Justice Earl Warren ruled that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." Segregation in schools became illegal.

• Significance: It overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and was a huge legal victory. However, it had no deadline for integration ("with all deliberate speed"), leading to massive resistance from the KKK and the White Citizens' Councils.

2. Freedom Riders (1961) 🚌

A direct challenge to segregation on transport.

• The Aim: CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) wanted to test if the Supreme Court rulings banning segregation on interstate buses and station facilities were actually being followed in the South.

• The Journey: "Freedom Riders" (Black and White activists mixed together) rode buses from Washington D.C. into the Deep South.

• The Violence: They faced horrific violence. In Anniston, Alabama, one bus was firebombed, and riders were beaten as they escaped. In Birmingham, the police chief Bull Connor gave the KKK 15 minutes to attack the riders before sending police.

• The Outcome: The violence was broadcast globally, embarrassing the US government. President Kennedy was forced to intervene, and the Interstate Commerce Commission eventually issued tougher regulations to end segregation on buses.

3. Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964) 🚢

The event that fully launched the US war in Vietnam.

• The Event: In August 1964, the US destroyer USS Maddox was patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin. It claimed it was fired upon by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. A second attack was reported two days later (though evidence for this was shaky/non-existent).

• Johnson’s Reaction: President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) used this to tell Congress that US forces had been attacked.

• The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: Congress passed this resolution, giving Johnson the power to "take all necessary measures" to defend US interests.

• Consequence: It acted like a "blank cheque." It allowed Johnson to escalate the war and send combat troops into Vietnam without officially declaring war.

4. Nixon’s Policies in Vietnam 🕊️💣

Nixon promised "Peace with Honour" to end the war, but his methods were mixed.

• Vietnamisation: Nixon’s policy to withdraw US troops and replace them with South Vietnamese forces (ARVN). He wanted the South to fight its own war (with US money and equipment).

• Bombing Campaigns: While withdrawing troops, he increased bombing to keep pressure on the North. He expanded the war by bombing Cambodia and Laos (Operation Menu) to destroy the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

• The "Madman Theory": Nixon wanted the North Vietnamese to fear he was irrational and might use nuclear weapons, hoping this would force them to negotiate.

• Paris Peace Accords (1973): Eventually, a ceasefire was signed. The US withdrew, but fighting resumed soon after, leading to the fall of South Vietnam in 1975.

Paper 3: The USA, 1954–75 (Option 33)

• Time: 1 hour 20 minutes ⏳ (Check your specific timetable as timings can vary slightly by centre/access arrangements, but usually Paper 3 is approx. this length).

• Total Marks: 52

Section A:

• Question 1 (4 marks): "Give two things you can infer from Source A..."

  • Tip: State the inference (what the source suggests) and provide the evidence (quote or description) for it. Do this twice!

• Question 2 (12 marks): "Explain why..."

  • Tip: You usually get a choice of two questions here. Choose the one you can write 3 strong PEEL paragraphs on. Focus on causation (why it happened).

Section B (Interpretations):

• Question 3a (8 marks): "How useful are Sources B and C..."

  • Tip: You must analyse the Content (what is in the source) and Provenance (Nature, Origin, Purpose) of both sources. How do they help an enquiry into the specific topic?

• Question 3b (4 marks): "What is the main difference between the views..."

  • Tip: Interpretation 1 has a positive/negative view on X, whereas Interpretation 2 has the opposite view.

• Question 3c (4 marks): "Suggest one reason why Interpretations 1 and 2 give different views..."

  • Tip: Look at the sources the historians might have used, or their focus (e.g., one looks at military success, the other at political failure).

• Question 3d (16 marks + 4 SPaG): "How far do you agree with Interpretation 2..."

  • Tip: The big essay! Discuss both interpretations. Use your own knowledge to agree or disagree with the view in Interpretation 2. Reach a clear judgement.

We know that exam season can feel incredibly overwhelming. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, so please remember to look after yourselves. 💙 Positive mental health is just as important as knowing your equations. Before we dive into what we think might come up, we need to start with a very important reminder:

Do not rely solely on these predictions for your revision; use them to focus your final prep, not solely define it.

Separate Science. 2026 AQA Physics Paper 2 (Higher) Revision Guide 📘

Based on our analysis, here are the topics we think have a high chance of appearing on this year's Higher Tier Paper 2. We’ve put together a brief revision guide for each one to jog your memory!

1. Work Done 💪

Work is done whenever a force causes an object to move. Remember the equation: Work Done (J) = Force (N) x Distance moved along the line of action of the force (m)

Key Point: Doing work always involves an energy transfer. For example, lifting an object transfers chemical energy from your muscles into gravitational potential energy in the object.

2. Spring Constant and Elasticity 🌀

You need to be comfortable with Hooke’s Law: F = ke, where k is the spring constant (how stiff the spring is).

Key Point: On a Force-Extension graph, the gradient represents the spring constant. The area under that graph represents the elastic potential energy stored. Watch out for the 'limit of proportionality'—the point where the spring stops obeying Hooke's law and won't return to its original shape.

3. Speed-Time Graphs 📈

These are crucial for Higher Tier.

Key Points:

• The gradient of a speed-time graph tells you the acceleration.

• The area under a speed-time graph tells you the total distance travelled. You often need to split the area into rectangles and triangles to calculate this.

4. Waves 🌊

You need to know the difference between transverse waves (oscillations perpendicular to energy transfer, e.g., light) and longitudinal waves (oscillations parallel to energy transfer, e.g., sound).

Key Point: Master the wave equation: Wave speed (v) = Frequency (f) x Wavelength. Be prepared to describe ripple tank experiments to measure these properties.

5. EM Waves 📡

Remember the spectrum order (Raw Meat Is Very Unhealthy eXcept Giraffe?): Radio, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays.

Key Point: They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum (the speed of light). You need to know the uses and dangers of each type. Energy increases as you move from radio towards gamma.

6. Moments and Gears ⚙️

A moment is the turning effect of a force. Moment (Nm) = Force (N) x perpendicular distance from the pivot (m)

Key Point (Higher Tier): For an object to be balanced (in equilibrium), total clockwise moments must equal total anticlockwise moments. You also need to understand how gears transmit rotational effects; a smaller gear turning a larger gear will increase the moment but decrease the speed.

7. Orbits 🛰️

Gravity is the force that keeps planets, moons, and satellites in orbit.

Key Point (Higher Tier): For objects in circular orbit, the speed may be constant, but the velocity is constantly changing because the direction is always changing. This means the object is constantly accelerating toward the centre of the circle.

8. Life Cycle of the Sun ☀️

You need to know the story of stars similar to our Sun.

Key Point: It starts as a Nebula (cloud of dust/gas) -> Protostar (gravity pulls it together, gets hot) -> Main Sequence Star (hydrogen fusion starts; gravity and radiation pressure are balanced). Eventually, it runs out of hydrogen, expands into a Red Giant, and finally collapses into a White Dwarf, cooling to a Black Dwarf. You should also know the different path taken by stars much more massive than the Sun (Supernova, Neutron Star/Black Hole).

9. Electromagnetism 🧲

This is a big topic for Paper 2.

Key Points:

• Motor Effect: A current-carrying wire in a magnetic field experiences a force (use Fleming's Left-Hand Rule).

• Generator Effect: Moving a wire through a magnetic field induces a potential difference (and current if the circuit is complete). This is how microphones work.

• Transformers (Higher Tier): You must be able to use the transformer equations linking potential difference to the number of turns on the coils and linking power input/output

Combined Science. 2026 AQA Physics Paper 2 (Higher) Revision Guide 📘

1. Work Done 💪

Work is done when a force causes an object to move through a distance.

• The Equation: You need to know and be able to rearrange W = F s

• Energy Transfer: Remember, "Work Done" is just another way of saying "Energy Transferred". If you push a box, you are transferring chemical energy from your muscles into kinetic energy (and heat due to friction) in the box.

• Units: Work is measured in Joules (J), Force in Newtons (N), and distance in metres (m).

2. Spring Constant & Elasticity 🌀

This relates to stretching and compressing objects.

• Hooke’s Law: F = k e (Force = Spring Constant x extension). The spring constant tells you how "stiff" the spring is.

• The Graph: On a Force-Extension graph, a straight line through the origin means the spring obeys Hooke's Law. The gradient of this line is the spring constant (k).

• Stored Energy: As you stretch a spring, you are doing work on it, storing Elastic Potential Energy. you are given this on the equation sheet, but you must know how to use it!

3. Speed-Time Graphs 📈

Don't confuse these with Distance-Time graphs!

• Gradient: The gradient (slope) of a speed-time graph represents acceleration. Steeper slope = higher acceleration. Horizontal line = constant speed.

• Area Under the Graph: The area underneath the line represents the distance travelled. You will often need to split the area into rectangles and triangles to calculate the total distance.

4. Waves 🌊

You need to be confident with the properties of waves.

• Types: Know the difference between Transverse waves (oscillations are perpendicular to energy transfer, e.g., light) and Longitudinal waves (oscillations are parallel to energy transfer, e.g., sound).

• The Wave Equation: (Wave speed = frequency x wavelength). This is a vital equation!

5. Electromagnetic (EM) Waves 📡

The EM spectrum is a continuous spectrum of waves.

• The Order: You must know the order by heart (Low energy/Long wavelength $\rightarrow$ High energy/Short wavelength): Radio, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays.

• Properties: They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum (the speed of light).

• Interactions: Know that higher frequency waves (UV, X-rays, Gamma) are ionising and can be hazardous to human tissue.

6. Electromagnetism 🧲

For Higher Tier, you need to understand the link between electricity and magnetism.

• Solenoids: A coil of wire with a current flowing through it creates a strong magnetic field (like a bar magnet). Adding an iron core increases the strength (an electromagnet).

• The Motor Effect: When a current-carrying wire is placed in a magnetic field, the magnet and the wire exert a force on each other.

• Fleming's Left-Hand Rule: Use this to find the direction of the force (Thumb = Motion/Force, First Finger = Field N-S, Second Finger = Current + to -).

• The Equation: (Force = Magnetic Flux Density x Current x Length). This allows you to calculate the size of the force.

1. Rates of Reaction ⏱️🌡️

This is a huge topic that often holds lots of marks. You need to be confident in explaining how different factors affect the rate of reaction using collision theory.

• Key factors: Temperature, concentration, pressure (in gases), surface area, and catalysts. Explain why these change the frequency of successful collisions.

• Activation Energy: Understand what it is and how catalysts lower it by providing an alternative reaction pathway.

• Graphs: Be prepared to draw tangents to a curve to calculate the gradient (rate of reaction) at a specific time.

2. Equilibrium ⚖️↔️

As this is the Higher Tier paper, expect some tricky questions on reversible reactions.

• Le Chatelier’s Principle: If a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in conditions, the position of equilibrium shifts to counteract that change.

• Applying changes: Know how changing temperature, pressure (for gases with different numbers of moles on each side), and concentration affects the position of equilibrium and the yield of products.

3. Hydrocarbons (Alkanes & Crude Oil) 🛢️⛽

This is the foundation of organic chemistry in Paper 2.

• Crude Oil: Know that it is a finite resource and a mixture consisting mainly of alkanes.

• Fractional Distillation: Explain how crude oil is separated into fractions based on boiling points and molecular size.

• Properties: How do boiling point, viscosity, and flammability change as the chain length increases?

• Cracking: The process of breaking down long-chain hydrocarbons into smaller, more useful molecules (alkanes and alkenes) using steam or catalysts.

4. Alkenes 🧪🍊

Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons, meaning they have a C=C double bond.

• The Test: How to distinguish alkanes from alkenes using bromine water (it turns from orange to colourless with alkenes).

• Reactions of Alkenes: Be familiar with addition reactions involving hydrogen (hydrogenation), steam (hydration to make alcohols), and halogens.

• Addition Polymerisation: How many alkene monomers join together to form long-chain polymers (like poly(ethene)).

5. Carboxylic Acids 🍋🐜

You need to know the basics of this functional group (-COOH).

• Weak Acids: Understand that they only partially ionise in water compared to strong acids like HCl.

• Reactions: How they react with metal carbonates (producing salt, water, and carbon dioxide) and with alcohols to produce esters (and water).

A smaller topic, but one that often requires specific knowledge.

• Types of Materials: Know the general properties and uses of ceramics, glass (soda-lime vs. borosilicate), composites, and polymers (thermosoftening vs. thermosetting).

Essential for life and essential for the exam!

• Potable Water: Understand that this is water safe to drink, but it is not pure water (it contains dissolved substances).

• Treatment: Know the steps to treat fresh water (filtration and sterilisation using chlorine, ozone, or UV).

• Desalination: Removing salt from seawater via distillation or reverse osmosis (remember, this is energy-intensive!).

• Waste Water: The general process of treating sewage and agricultural waste water (screening, sedimentation, aerobic and anaerobic digestion).

8. Climate Change 🌍🥵

This is often linked to the 'Chemistry of the Atmosphere' topic.

• Greenhouse Gases: Carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapour. Explain the greenhouse effect (short wavelength radiation in, long wavelength radiation trapped).

• Human Impact: How activities like burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and cattle farming contribute to climate change.

• Effects: Consequences such as rising sea levels, extreme weather patterns, and changes to ecosystems.

9. Fertilisers 🍅🥦🚜

Connects industrial chemistry with agriculture.

• NPK: Fertilisers contain formulations of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium salts to promote plant growth.

• The Haber Process: The industrial production of ammonia (N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃). You must know the conditions used (temp, pressure, iron catalyst) and the compromises made between rate of reaction and yield.

• Measuring Rate: Know how to calculate the mean rate of reaction from a graph or data (Amount of product formed / time).

A very topical subject that frequently appears.

• Greenhouse Gases: Know the main three (Carbon dioxide, Methane, Water vapour) and describe the greenhouse effect (short wavelength radiation passes through, long wavelength radiation is trapped).

• Human Activities: How farming (methane), burning fossil fuels (CO2), and deforestation contribute to global warming.

• Effects: Be able to list effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather, and changes to wildlife distribution.

3. Water (Potable & Waste) 🚰💧

Don't get caught out by the definitions here!

• Potable Water: This is water that is safe to drink. It is not pure water (pure water has nothing else in it), as potable water contains dissolved solids.

• Treatment: Know the steps to produce potable water from fresh water: Filtration (removes solids) and Sterilisation (kills microbes using chlorine or UV).

• Waste Water: Understand the basics of sewage treatment: Screening, Sedimentation (producing sludge and effluent), and digesting the sludge anaerobically vs. treating effluent aerobically.

4. Chromatography 🎨🔍

This is often linked to the "Pure substances and Mixtures" topic.

• The Method: Be familiar with the practical setup (start line in pencil, solvent below the line).

• Rf Values: You must be able to calculate this:

  $$R_f = \frac{\text{distance moved by substance}}{\text{distance moved by solvent}}$$

• Interpretation: Pure substances produce one spot; mixtures produce multiple spots. If a spot stays on the line, it is insoluble in that solvent.

5. Hydrocarbons (Crude Oil & Fuels) 🛢️⛽

For Combined Science, focus on the fuels aspect rather than complex organic reactions.

• Crude Oil: It is a finite resource (plankton buried for millions of years) and a mixture of hydrocarbons.

• Alkanes: The simplest hydrocarbons with the general formula $C_n H_{2n+2}$. They are saturated (single bonds only).

• Fractional Distillation: How crude oil is separated into fractions based on boiling points (larger molecules condense at the bottom where it is hotter; smaller molecules condense at the top).

• Cracking: Breaking down long, less useful alkanes into shorter alkanes and alkenes. Know the test for alkenes: Bromine water turns from orange to colourless.

6. Equilibrium ⚖️↔️

• Reversible Reactions: Reactions that can go forwards and backwards ($A + B \rightleftharpoons C + D$).

• Energy: If the forward reaction is exothermic, the backward reaction is endothermic (and involves the same amount of energy).

• Le Chatelier's Principle (HT Only): If you change the conditions (concentration, temperature, pressure) of a reversible reaction at equilibrium, the system will counteract the change.
