Creators from around the world are gathering in San Diego for a weekend filled with IRL content, networking opportunities, platform updates and a slate of fun activities. While I won’t be attending myself, there are thousands of creators, big and small, making an appearance at this highly anticipated event. Maybe you are even reading this from the comfort of a hotel room right now.

Last weekend, I had the awesome opportunity to attend San Japan in San Antonio, TX. Most of my time was spent at a booth as part of a collaboration between the app development studio I work for and a new Pokémon TCG online retailer. I launched a super fun gacha card game, letting San Japan visitors take a shot at winning a few high-value Pokémon cards. By the last day, we had a few surprise winners (I tried my luck and failed XD).

Had to mask up, yo!

That backdrop attracted a lot of curious cosplayers.

One of the highlights for me was getting to chat with a bunch of indie game developers who were showcasing their latest creations at the event. It was such a blast, and now I'm totally pumped to look for more conventions to hit up next year.

I've missed you!

It’s been a few weeks since my last email, and I wanted catch up with you. Life got a bit hectic with a surge of freelance projects (I manage digital marketing for several small businesses) and some personal matters that needed attention, which made it tough to find time to write. The good news? Most of that work is now behind me, so I’m back in action.

While most of my time away was spent working on this or that, I did manage to attend the San Antonio Twitch Community Meetup hosted by @kiwisnstars and @twitchsatx. They did such a great job putting together a fun event.

I’ve never been to a Twitch meetup before so this was a new experience for me. I’ll often tweet about how much I miss streaming on Twitch, but I don’t think I really felt it until participating in this community gathering.

I miss talking to other gamers / streamers.

I miss finding joy in shared interests.

I miss feeling a part of a larger community.

The meetup filled a small gap that has been missing since I stopped streaming over a year ago now. I really needed that.

While I was there, I got a chance to share a little bit about this newsletter and I think a few new friends even signed up! If you’re a SATX meetup attendee and are reading this, HELLO AND THANK YOU!

I learned that the local Twitch community in San Antonio has been pretty dormant since COVID in 2020. Yeah, humans gathered in a poorly ventilated room and COVID are not a great combination. Now that they are back, I’m looking forward to future events!

I’m coming back from a short break celebrating my 7th anniversary with my wife. We kept it low key, but it was great to just enjoy time with family and touch grass.

While I was teaching my daughter how to swim in the pool, so much happened in the streaming space. We lost Game Informer, a publication that had been an important part of my childhood and contributed to my love of video games, design, and writing. Bungie faced another round of layoffs in less than a year. Streamers are getting cancelled left and right. And apparently Adin Ross and Donald Trump are BFFs now? Seriously, what timeline are we in?

This edition we’re doing things a little different. I felt that the Top Stories section has been getting neglected lately. I tend to want to write way more than what an email would allow. You know what I mean if my emails to you have gotten clipped for being too long. Rather than try to say everything in email, the Top Stories section will now link to articles on the website. This will give me the flexibility to expand on stories that may require more context.

Sorry for the spontaneous weekend email! The last week has been pretty chaotic and I never had a chance to send out a newsletter at our usual Tuesday afternoon time slot.

Life has just been wrecking my schedule lately. Several really important things came up all at once and I had to prioritize them hurriedly.

While I was busy putting out fires, my Twitter feed was filled with some fires of its own. I feel like we got three weeks worth of news in the span of one week. Everything from MrBeast and Ava Tyson to Cody Ko and Sneako. I definitely haven’t had the space to write about everything happening, but know that I’m aware, I’m following updates, and I’ll hopefully have some thoughts to share soon.

On a more positive note, I’ll be celebrating my 7th wedding anniversary in a few days. I’m going to go right ahead and let you know that next edition of the newsletter will either be late or none existent. All focus will be on celebrating another milestone with my beautiful wife. But don’t worry, I’ll for sure be back the following week.

Before we get started, I feel the need to address the enormous elephant in the room. This is by no means a political newsletter, but it feels disingenuous to simply ignore what happened.

I did not have “assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump” on my 2024 bingo card, but here we are. Another day. Another major event.

Are y’all as tired as I am of living through major events like this? I feel like at this point all I can do is try to laugh. I’m no fan of the guy, but I didn’t expect to witness anything like what happened.

Often times, I use these introductions to just talk about what is on my mind or give you a personal update about my life.

Today, I’m thinking about those who are feeling overwhelmed or intense anxiety about what happened. Even if you actively avoid the daily news, chances are you saw discussions about the assassination attempt on Twitch, YouTube, Discord or Twitter. It can be difficult to cope when your “safe space” is overrun with politically charged discourse. Maybe you even butted heads with friends on the opposite side of the political divide. If that sounds like you, make sure you take time to look after your mental health.

And don’t forget to check in on your streamer friends. Gaming is great escapism, but it doesn’t replace seeking proper help when you are in distress.

I had the unfortunate luck of getting COVID during the long holiday weekend. In fact, my whole family got COVID. While most of the nation was enjoying burgers, hot dogs, and fireworks, we spend the weekend indoors focusing on getting better. I really wanted a hot dog 😩😩😩

Everything Announced at Twitchcon Rotterdam

If you didn’t attend Twitchcon this past week, you may have missed some major platform updates! Twitch published a new post detailing all the announcements here, but I’m going to give you a quick rundown below.

The new Twitch mobile app

Creators have had a few months to check out the redesigned Twitch mobile app. Notably, Twitch added a personalized live feed that lets you quickly flip through live content. Twitch is listening to community feedback and promised to continue improving the app.

Twitch Stories

Just like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, Twitch now has its own version of Stories, giving creators another cool way to connect with their community. Initially, Stories were limited to images and clips, they finally announced that video creation and uploads will soon be supported. Partners will get to try out this new feature first before it rolls out to everyone else over the next few weeks. Stories will also be coming to the web in the next few months.

Improving Twitch Clips

Twitch is rolling out new tools to help you share your content everywhere. If you've been converting your stream clips into portrait versions for Instagram and TikTok, good news! Twitch will now automatically generate these portrait versions for you and you’ll get to edit and share them however you like. The portrait clips will also be featured on the new mobile feed. You can even give your viewers access to your clips to encourage them to share on social media.

What are Twitch Drop-Ins?

Twitch is stepping up its game with the Stream Together feature. At Twitchcon, they unveiled a cool new "drop-in" feature that lets streamers join each other’s live streams without any hassle. No need to stress about unexpected guests either—you get full control over who can join. Not in the mood for a collab? Just hit pause on the requests. EZ!

Power-ups Update

Twitch launched a new feature called Power-ups a few weeks back. Based on chatter online the reception has been mixed, with many creators discouraging its use. That isn’t stopping Twitch from adding some new Power-up options like seasonal Message Effects, text-to-speech capabilities, sound-based Alerts, and customizable options for creators. Twitch is also interested in supporting third-party developers who have their own live stream engagement tools.

Enhanced Broadcasting on OBS Studio and XSplit

Twitch announced that enhanced broadcasting, originally launched in January, will be available to all streamers in an upcoming version of OBS and XSplit. If you aren’t familiar with enhanced broadcasting, it is a way for Twitch to offer better video quality (transcoding) using your computer’s GPU resources. For Twitch, this is a great way for them to reduce the huge cost of supporting transcoding meaning it doesn’t have to limit transcoding to just Partners. For streamers, it means better stream quality and wide accessibility to viewers on mobile or with a limited internet connection.

DJ Enrollment

A few weeks ago Twitch announced a first-of-its-kind DJ program that would provide a revenue split between Twitch, DJ streamers, and music labels. You can expect open enrollment for this program to start in August. In the meantime, Twitch plans on adding a DJ category really soon!

Creator Clubs

Another new program, Creator Clubs, was introduced. Unlike Unity Guilds, Creator Clubs focus on creator content and are open Affiliates and Partners. Creator Club members get access to a dedicated Discord server with resources, direct contact with Twitch staff, and an educational library on content creation. Applications for the first two clubs, DJs and IRL, will open at the end of July.

Streamer Achievement Awards

Twitch also introduced a new achievement program called the Bleed Purple Statue to recognize streamers who hit specific viewership milestones. There are three tiers of the statue based on watch hours.

• Purple - 5 million hours watched

• Marble: 50 million hours watched

• Chrome: 250 million hours watched is Chrome

The first Bleed Purple Statue was awarded to @LittleBigWhale on stage during the event. Eligible streamers will receive an email.

Vidcon 2024 Creator Recap

Twitch wasn’t the only major event that happened this week. Vidcon 2024 returned to Anaheim for another year. Here are some important platform updates that were announced during the 4-day event.

TikTok

• On July 9th, TikTok will be hosting its first “Deals for You Days”. Its basically its own version of Amazon Prime Day. Expect major discounts from retailers on the TikTok Shop.

• TikTok shared its “What’s Next 2024 Trend Report” forecasting trends over the next year. The report highlighted 3 trends.

  • TikTok is for the curious: Creators should try experimenting with hyper-unique aspects of their brand to educate, entertain or enrich their community.

  • Community-driven storytelling: Creators should move beyond traditional storytelling and instead engage the community through experimental story arcs and creative hooks.

  • Building brand trust: Bold creators are vulnerable and focus on communicating their values to build trust through transparency.

Meta

• Meta plans to work with 50 US-based creators to create AI characters through the Meta AI Studio.

• Instagram is testing a new feature called Trials allowing creators to test and get feedback on reels from people who don’t follow them.

• According to Instagram, 37% of users use Reels daily, 78% engage with it monthly.

More Disturbing Revelations Following Dr Disrespect News

Last week, I shared with you some troubling developments in regards to Dr Disrespect sharing inappropriate messages with a minor through Twitch’s whisper system.

Since then, we not only gained more information on the situation, but have already started witnessing some of the aftermath.

For starters, Dr Disrespect’s loyal defenders can finally quiet down. Initially, there was some debate on Twitter about whether he knew the person he was communicating with was indeed a minor. It is now confirmed that Dr Disrespect DID know he was sending explicit messages to a minor. Even if he didn’t know, it is wild that they thought this would vindicate him.

On June 26th, a trans Twitch streamer came forward and shared screenshots of DMs she had with Dr Disrespect where he lied about promising to help her get partner in exchange for private cam shows. This occurred in the same year that Dr Disrespect both messaged a minor and cheated on his wife. These are three different instances in the same year…wow.

Reports also confirmed that Twitch reported Dr Disrespect to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children after discovering the whispers.

While more information was being revealed, several brands terminated their deals with Dr Disrespect including Turtle Beach and Subway. NBA 2K24 plans on removing his skin from the game in its next patch.

Twitch has a few minor updates, and CEO Dan Clancy had some explaining to do about his Twitch mobile feed being filled with 18+ content creators.

YouTube is experimenting with community notes and corrections, plus they’ve released a helpful video on using the new Thumbnail A/B testing tool.

🥇This Week’s Top Stories

The Reason Twitch Banned Dr Disrespect Four Years Ago Is Finally Revealed. And Its Worse Than You Think.

Even if you don’t actively engage with his community, you’ve probably heard of Dr Disrespect who was, at one point, one of Twitch’s top streamers. He’s been creating content since 2010 and is best known for playing FPS shooters like Call of Duty, having insane production value, and sporting an 80s action hero costume with his signature wig, shades, and mustache.

After the week he’s had, I think he is going to be better known for something else entirely.

This story started on June 21 when former Twitch employee, Cody Conners, who worked with Twitch’s strategic partnerships team went to Twitter to spill the beans about Dr Disrespect’s 2020 perma-ban. He stated the reason for Dr Disrespect’s ban was because he was caught sexting a minor and trying to meet up with her at a previous TwitchCon.

Its important to note that Cody did not name anyone in his tweet. However, it was easy for (most) to connect the dots and realize who Cody was talking about. Back in 2020, Twitch abruptly banned Dr Disrespect around the same time they started enforced permanent suspensions for sexual harassment offenders. Surely, Cody’s tweet was calling out Dr Disrespect right?

Despite never being mentioned in the tweet, Dr Disrespect implicates himself when he decides to respond to media personality Jake Lucky who was covering the allegations on Twitter.

The following day, Dr Disrespect attempts to clarify his position and claims he “didn’t do anything wrong” repeating what he’s publicly stated in the past. Ironically, this doesn’t help his case at all. Instead, it adds more confusion and fuels further online debates through the weekend.

It isn’t until Monday that Midnight Society, the gaming studio Dr Disrespect cofounded, gets involved and conducts its own investigation leading to the immediate termination of Dr Disrespect. Pretty damning, don’t you think?

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon Dr Disrespect decides to hold nothing back and unleashes what might be a contender for this year’s most wild tweet in the streaming space.

You can read the full tweet here. But here is the summary:

Dr Disrespect concedes that the allegations are true.

In 2017, the same year he made headlines for cheating on his wife, Dr Disrespect admits that he used Twitch whispers to send inappropriate messages to a minor. He is intentionally very vague on the nature of the messages, but claims they were “casual” and “mutual” conversations.

He apologizes to Midnight Society and his community for what he labels as the “moral standpoint”. He downplays his termination from Midnight Society calling it a mutual decision which is very generous compared how Midnight Society announced his termination.

He continues to say that he doesn’t accept the predator / pedophile label claiming that this situation isn’t the same thing.

SURE IT IS.

He finally ends his long rant by thanking his long time supporters, cursing his haters, and vowing his return like a cartoonish Disney villain.

As I’m writing this late at night, that tweet has gained 60 million views and many personalities in the streaming space have shared their responses. Several of Dr Disrespect’s friends shared their thoughts on Twitter including TimTheTatMan, Nickmercs, and Ninja who all elected to no longer support Dr Disrespect following the confirmation of these allegations.

Regarding Nickmercs response, I found it to be pretty flaccid compared to his fiery transphobic discourse. This guy gets more heated about a stranger’s pronouns than one of his close friends admitting to pedo behavior. WILD!

Friends aren’t the only ones pulling away from Dr Disrespect. Brands like Turtle Beach are also ending longtime partnerships with the “two-time”.

Unsurprisingly, Dr Disrespect has no shortage of defenders despite admitting to the allegations. The tweets I’m reading are actually insane. I don’t know how someone can willfully support Dr Disrespect after everything we’ve learned this week.

It is unclear what happens next.

In his tell-all tweet, Dr Disrespect signed off stating he was taking an extended family vacation essentially ending the discussion altogether.

Twitch has remained quiet throughout the discourse and revelations over the last several days. It makes sense, though. Why would Twitch want to highlight their part in Twitch CEO Dan Clancy issued a playful response in regards to Dr Disrespect’s ban on Twitch streamer Mizkif’s podcast a few months ago. He may decide to offer a more sincere response now that everything is out there.

Despite this feeling like the conclusion of a terrible four-year long saga, there are still questions that remain unanswered.

Will Dr Disrespect face any more repercussions in light of these revelations?

Does the reveal of private information by ex-Twitch employees void any previously established agreements?

Will Dr Disrespect retaliate through legal channels?

I’m sure some of these questions will be answered while others we may never find out.

I think its important to remember that Dr Disrespect is just a high-profile example of something that happens ALL THE TIME on platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

I encourage you to evaluate your communities and ensure that you are doing your absolute best to not only protect your community members (especially minors), but also hold mutuals accountable.

We can’t always depend on companies like Twitch to do the right thing. They actually have a pretty damning track record of NOT doing the right thing.

As creators with public platforms, it is our responsibility to safeguard our circles by being proactive in establishing community guidelines and calling out vile behavior when we see it.

Ex-Kick Employee Calls Out Kick Leadership For Inappropriate Content

Oh neat, another Kick controversy!

On June 17th, a streamer and ex-Kick employee known as itsmelissadude shared a video about her personal experience working at Kick. She shed light on some alarming behavior she witnessed firsthand.

What was among the allegations? Oh you know…just…

• Staff using hard R and F slurs while in the workplace

• Staff deliberately misgendering trans creators

• An employee bragging about severely reducing a creator’s rate

• Disregard for enforcing policies around minors streaming

• Management forcing Melissa to choose between work and the wellbeing of her child, questioning her work ethic

And the kick-er?

Melissa alleges that Kick staff openly discussed getting a streamer who was actively battling cancer to sign a deal with Kick for less money because “she probably thinks she’s going to die soon and she’ll want to leave more money for her family”.

The streamer in question was confirmed to be Kyedae, who said she was offered a Kick contract, but declined for moral reasons.

While these allegations won’t have any repercussions, I think it gives you a clear glimpse at the culture at Kick. Look, we both know there are no ethical streaming platforms (just look at what Twitch is dealing with), but I feel like Kick doesn’t even attempt the bare minimum.

If you’re streaming on Kick, I have a serious question for you.

Why?

If you aren’t being loud and holding Kick accountable then you’re just supporting a defunct platform that continues to show its true colors.

Highlights from June’s Nintendo Direct

Right off the heels of all the announcements from Summer Game Fest, Nintendo shared a few exciting updates during their own presentation.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Within the first few moments of the trailer, Link gets swallowed up by a mysterious rift leaving it up to Princess Zelda to save her own kingdom in a surprising twist in the Legend of Zelda series. Princess Peach: Showtime! released earlier this year to fantastic reviews, so I’m happy to see we’re getting another often sidelined female character get a shot as playable hero!

Mario & Luigi Brotherhood

After a nine year hiatus, Mario & Luigi are back for a new adventure. The trailer reveal promised a seafaring adventure in a cute aesthetic unique to previous Mario titles.

Metroid Prime 4 Beyond

I remember when I bought Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for my Wii.

Man, I’m old!!!!

We’ve waited 18 years for the next installment in the Metroid Prime series.

The trailer didn’t reveal much, but I can’t help but get hyped for another adventure with Samus.

Wow! This past week was a whirlwind of exciting announcements and news. The Summer Game Fest alone was FILLED with new release announcements and updates to fan favorites. I spent all of last weekend watching and sometimes rewatching the showcases just to take notes on everything I wanted to talk about.

In the end, I decided not to push myself too hard and just skipped last week’s newsletter to have enough time to review it all.

I originally wanted to write extensive pieces on each showcase, but it felt too similar to what already existed on publishers like IGN and Game Informer. Instead, I’ll take you through some highlights from each showcase and share the usual bits you’ve come to expect from the newsletter.

Last weekend, I spent most of my free time watching every Summer Game Fest showcase. There were ALOT of updates with some very exciting games announced across the various live events.

I originally thought about covering each one individually, but let’s be honest, there are online publishers that have already done that legwork and a great job at that. Instead, I’ll share links to some notable coverage and share some of the news I was personally excited about!

Blumhouse Games Reveals

I was NOT expecting Blumhouse Games to announce not one, but six new horror games. The best part about it? They all feel so unique. Bravo Blumhouse for a strong start! I’m excited to try each of these out.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind

This one may not have been a first choice for most, but as a 90’s baby who spent way too much time at the arcade playing X-Men and Ninja Turtles 2D beat-em-ups, I was very enthusiastic about jumping into a new Power Rangers title.

Phantom Blade Zero

After the Phantom Blade Zero reveal a few months ago, I think most gamers were wondering if the cinematic set pieces in the trailer would translate to actual gameplay. I think the Summer Game Fest gameplay trailer answered that. YES, I AM SO EXCITED!

Screenbound

Screenbound is another title that has gotten some coverage in the past, but it was nice revisiting it again during the event. We’ve all played 2D and 3D platformers, but how challenging would it be to traverse levels in both dimensions at the same time. Screenbound looks to answer that with an really fun trailer!

Phoenix Spring

I think what really captured my attention was the art direction and bold color palette of Phoenix Springs. Point-and-Click murder mystery? Yeah, sign me up!

Devolver Direct | Full Recap from IGN

Anger Foot

Devolver didn’t have too many announcements, but one notable title, Anger Foot, has you taking down enemies with your big toe. Its silly and violent in the best way possible. It reminded me of that time I streamed Hotline Miami. I liked the trailer so much, I jumped on the demo and loved it. Will be grabbing this one later this year.

Future of Play Direct | Full Recap from IGN

Psychroma

This 30-minute showcase featured many great indie titles releasing over the next year. One that really grabbed me was Rocket Adrift Games’ Psychroma. You play as a digital medium forced to confront the past through a series of broken memories. The pixel art is beautifully unsettling. Definitely something I’d play!

Wholesome Direct | Full Recap from Game8

ILA: A Frosty Glide

This year’s Wholesome Direct introduced many titles that made it to my Steam wishlist, but the clear standout was ILA: A Frosty Glide. This casual 3D platformer features a gorgeous voxel art style and lets you ride a broom through a colorful world.

Latin American Games Showcase | Full Recap from Game8

Despelote

If you didn’t know, I’m half Ecuadorian. When I learned the developers behind Despelote were also Ecuadorian, I leaned in. This charming hand-drawn adventures has you exploring the streets of Quito and playing soccer with the local population.

Dreamcore

I’m on a liminal spaces reddit. I watch YouTube videos about The Backrooms. And I played subliminal on stream a few years ago. Yeah, this one is for me.

Tenebris Somnia

I didn’t know pixel art could be terrifying until I watched this trailer. The game also includes some live action cutscenes that really immerse you in the shocking imagery of this 2D survival horror adventure.

Women-Led Games | Full Recap from Games8

Just Crow It

Untitled Goose Game walked so Just Crow Things could run. I’m really enjoying this sub-genre of games just focusing on you being a complete asshole to random strangers.

Future Games Show | Full Recap from Games Radar

The Casting of Frank Stone

Coming from the studio that brought us Little Nightmares, Until Dawn, and The Quarry and taking place in the Dead By Daylight universe. This is a day one purchase, hands down.

Nikoderiko

This new title reminded me of my youth. You can see the obvious inspiration from Crash Bandicoot and Donkey Kong Country. Nikoderiko has a chance to be a worthy platformer!

Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream

I’m a huge fan of stealth games. Everything from A Plague Tale: Innocence to Splinter Cell. Eriksholm takes place in a unique fictional city inspired by 1900s Nordic aesthetic. The bits of story seen in the trailer sound interesting and the isometric camera are sure to create some fun stealth challenges.

Xbox Games Showcase | Full Recap from Microsoft

Gears of War E-Day

After the recent Activision Blizzard merger, all eyes were on Xbox to see what they were bringing to the table. Titles like Gears of War E-Day really set the tone for the showcase and got fans really excited for what is to come. This latest Gear of War title is a prequel that will explore the events around Emergence Day.

DOOM: The Dark Ages

Who doesn’t love a gory and violent DOOM trailer? This is another prequel exploring the origins of Doom Guy. I’m hyped to cause mayhem will an all-new arsenal of weapons.

FragPunk

Okay, a lot of these games I’m highlighting are single-player experiences. How about a new competitive FPS? Fragpunk is a new 5 v 5 hero shooter that puts a new twist on the formula by introducing power-up cards that alter the environment and rules once activated.

I Am Your Beast

You can never have too many frenetic FPS shooters. This one has a unique art style and some fast-paced mechanics that will keep me up well into the night.

Killing Floor III

I never played the previous titles so I think now is a good time to start. This is one I’m excited to play with the homies. You know who you are ;)

Deathspring 66

Run or Die. Its a simple premise, but the cyberpunk aesthetic and chance to show up my friends has me thinking this is a day one purchase.

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows

Ubisoft kept it pretty simple: Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia.

There isn’t too much new here, but if you already saw the trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows I think you know what fun you are in for. If you haven’t grown tired of the AC formula yet, this new title takes place in Japan, something that has been requested by the community for ages now.

This Esports Deal With Saudi Arabia Sparks Resignation Of The Face Of Esports

The Esports Awards announced a three-year deal with the Esports World Cup (EWC). On the surface, that may not seem like much, however, you should know the EWC is financially backed by Saudi Arabia, a country well-known for violating women’s and LGBTQIA+’s rights.

This isn’t just some local awards show. The Esports Awards is THE esports industry awards show event with a prize pool of $60 million.

That is why the partnership garnered criticism from notable esports personalities and athletes. How can the Esports Awards justify their values while lining its pockets with money from a country where homosexuality is punishable by death and human rights activists are imprisoned.

The Esports Awards CEO will tell you the partnership is an opportunity to bring East and West together to become the global hub of esports. But many including esports shout caster Alex GoldenBoy Mendez is calling BS.

Alex recently resigned citing that the new partnership doesn’t align with his personal or professional beliefs. Many other have spoken out online denouncing the Esports Awards for their decision.

Many of you reading may not watch esports closely, but highlighting this news is important. Esports represents a large chunk of the gaming and streaming community, especially when you’re talking about notable brand sponsorships. With Saudi Arabia ramping up investments in media and entertainment, will other organizations follow suit?

Following this deal the Esports Awards ceremony will take place this August in Saudi Arabia.

Kai Beats Elden Ring After +150hr Playthrough

Kai Cenat has become a name synonymous with breaking barriers in the streaming world. Known for clinching multiple ‘Streamer of the Year’ awards and boasting the record for the highest number of subscribers on Twitch, Kai continues to captivate audiences with what might be his toughest challenge yet: conquering the notoriously difficult game, Elden Ring.

But Kai didn't just dive into the game—he turned it into a spectacle with a hype-building trailer and some fun props in his stream room. Take notes streamers: the excitement starts before the stream even goes live!

After an intense 156 hours and a staggering 1,701 deaths, Kai emerged victorious. The formidable boss Malenia, who accounted for 400 of those deaths, finally fell. This monumental achievement wasn’t just a personal victory for Kai; it catapulted Elden Ring back into the Twitch spotlight, boosting its viewership by 283% that week. Great timing considering FromSoftware is releasing DLC for the game in less than a month.

I even noticed a few mutuals pick up Elden Ring! Coincidence????

The climax of Kai’s marathon was shared on Twitter, quickly racking up 7.6 million views. His stream peaked at an impressive 230,000 concurrent viewers, highlighting his massive influence on the platform.

Kai's journey through Elden Ring is more than just gameplay—it's a testament to how engaging content can captivate and grow an audience, regardless of the streamer's skill level. It’s a powerful reminder of the potential within each streamer to leverage their unique personality and creative ideas to entertain and engage viewers.

For those crafting their path in the competitive world of streaming, Kai’s approach offers valuable lessons in audience engagement, resilience, and the art of turning every stream into a must-watch event.

A Discussion on Sexual Harassment in Gaming

Last week, a disturbing incident during a Valorant game captured on video went viral on Twitter, amassing over 40 million views. The clip featured Twitch streamer TaylorMorgan, who was subjected to a shocking threat of r*pe by a male player during the game. The severity of the comments forced Taylor to abruptly leave the game, highlighting a well-known issue within the gaming community: the gaming industry does not protect female gamers from online harassment.

In her post, Taylor criticized Riot Games for their inadequate measures to protect female players from such harassment. The tweet sparked widespread discussion, receiving over 14,000 responses. While many expressed support for Taylor, alarmingly, some users attacked her and even sided with the aggressor.

Those misogynists often like to say that women make up a minority of gamers, but the truth is that women constituted 46% of gamers in 2023. A separate 2021 survey also revealed that 49% of female gamers had experienced online harassment, marking an 8% increase from the previous year.

Despite numerous calls for action, there's no indication that Riot Games has addressed this specific case. This event is part of a longstanding issue of harassment in gaming, which has seen some progress over the years but still requires much more effort from both gaming studios and platforms to create a safer environment.

How was your weekend?

I spent mine with my wife and mother-in-law enjoying some delicious meals in celebration of Mother’s Day (2x for the U.S. and Mexico dates). It was a lovely time and I was thankful to have the means to gift my amazing wife something for the occasion.

Sadly, life isn’t without its surprises.

The weekend took a turn for the worst when I got some troubling news.

My mom was in the hospital.

That text message made my stomach twist into knots.

I, obviously, did what most men would do in this situation and immediately shut down my emotions and pressed on with my day. I just acknowledged the text, asked for updates, and shot my mom a little message making sure she knew I was thinking of her.

I know, I know. It probably wasn’t the best way to handle things…I’m still working through that.

You see, we’re living in two different states and I last saw her seven months ago when my daughter was born, which had its own challenges and trauma.

It wasn’t easy to receive that news knowing I was so far away and had no immediate means of traveling in the event of an emergency. The situation was out of my control and the only thing I could do was focus on the present and hope that the situation was minor.

Thankfully, it was and she was discharged that same day.

Occasions like Mother’s Day are weird like that. They bring so much joy and can also bring so much pain. Every person’s relationship with their mother is different, but I think we all can relate to the dichotomy of that experience.

To all the incredible moms in our streaming community, I hope your Mother's Day weekend was filled with moments of joy and relaxation.

Whether you're celebrating recent achievements, navigating your own challenges, or reflecting on past memories, remember that your well-being is essential. I hope you took some time for self-care, surrounded by friends and family to uplift and support you.

Microsoft Shuts Down Multi-Award Winning Studio Behind Hi-Fi Rush

The trend of abrupt studio closures continues, this time affecting Arkane Austin (Dishonored, PREY) and Tango Gameworks (Hi-Fi Rush, The Evil Within).

Arkane is coming off a less than stellar release in Redfall which promised a lot and did not deliver. Now, I’m not saying Arkane’s closure is justified, but when you take a huge hit like Redfall did, atleast there is some semblance of reasoning. Contrast this with Tango Gameworks who hot dropped Hi-Fi Rush in early 2023 garnering several awards and acclaim despite being a completely original IP.

The closures had the gaming industry as a whole asking, “Why?!”.

Well, according to Head of Xbox Game Studio Matt Booty, Xbox “need(s) smaller games that give us prestige and awards…”. Funny, because…I’m pretty sure that is what Tango Gameworks just accomplished. See Matt’s full statement here.

The rhythm hack-and-slash platformer has a solid 87 on Metacritic and is Overwhelmingly Positive with 23K reviews on Steam. Even Tango Gameworks’ project manager took a dig at Xbox heads decision with a mic drop of a tweet showing off a row of awards with the caption, “Not Enough?”.

President of Xbox, Sarah Bond, didn’t offer a better answer. During a recent interview with Bloomberg Tech, her response to why the critically-acclaimed Tango Gameworks is getting shelved felt more like a rambling deflection than a sincere explanation.

Sarah believes the last year in industry growth plateaued and the cost of gaming has continued to skyrocket. These factors, according to Sarah, has resulted in a lack of overall growth for Xbox and other studios / platforms. She’s not wrong here, but it doesn’t quite explain why an award-winning studio pays the price for a stagnant industry. You can watch the full interview.

Just to clarify, my goal here isn’t to hate on Sarah. I was very excited to hear when she was announced as President of Xbox. You can’t possibly blame her for industry wide problems that existed before her tenure.

However, her answers-sorry, her lack of answers indicate that large platforms like Xbox have no plan in place to protect and support smaller game studios EVEN when they manage to hit a homerun.

For now, you can still enjoy Hi-Fi Rush on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Limited Run is also planning to release physical editions.

This is getting depressing y’all.

Nintendo Head Confirms Huge News For The Switch 2

In some lighter news, Nintendo President Furukawa confirms that the Nintendo Switch successor will be announced later in 2024.

He also indicated that he feels very positive about meeting customer demand for the new system referencing a much healthier semi-conductor market than in recent years. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED sold a combined 140 million units. We can safely assume that each Switch owner will be looking to make the upgrade whenever the new console is released.

Despite the fact that we don’t have much more information about this new console, rumors have already sprouted about the hardware specs and the potential of a Breath of the Wild sequel launching with the console. We may get a little teaser in the planned Nintendo Direct presentation slated for June 2024.

Until then, I’ll just be daydreaming about the successor to the Nintendo Switch.

Last weekend I had my first pulga experience! If you aren’t familiar, pulga is Spanish for flea market. I had never gone to one where I’m from, so getting a chance to visit my first in San Antonio was a treat!

I was surprised by how many vendors were selling gaming equipment and titles. One vendor in particular had whole garage’s worth of retro consoles from the NES to the Xbox 360. I almost snagged a Gamecube, but the price was a little high.

I did, however, manage to grab these awesome anime pins for my work backpack.

I also met with a vendor who sold me an awesome Crash Bandicoot figure that will be displayed proudly on my office desk.

Celebrating May The 4th

While I was out exploring the best deals pulgas can offer, many others were celebrating Star Wars Day! I would have LOVED to see The Phantom Menace in theaters for its re-release. Instead, I settled for throwing on Revenge of the Sith on Disney+ and dusting off my Fortnite account to see what Star Wars skins were available in the shop.

We DID get some cute photos of my 7 month old daughter in Princess Leia’s signature look from A New Hope. That was pretty cool!

Your Favorite YouTuber Is Suing The U.S. Immigration

Okay, I don’t actually know if he is your favorite. However, you may be familiar with MoistCr1TiKaL who has amassed 15 million YouTube subscribers who tune in watch him play games and spill the tea on topics ranging from the Kendrick versus Drake Rap War to his thoughts on Amazon’s Invincible series.

In addition to regular uploads on his YouTube channel, MoistCr1TiKaL also owns an esports team, Moist Esports, which competes in Rocket League, Valorant, and Apex Legends.

In one of his most recent uploads, he shares an update to an ongoing situation him and his esports team has had with U.S. immigration. Three members of his Apex Legends esports team, who are all Australian, were denied entry into the U.S. to compete in a tournament multiple times over the course of six months. He further explained that he was forced to release the team in order to allow them to compete, which is a huge blow to the organization.

MoistCr1TiKaL furiously proclaimed his intentions to sue the Department of Immigration. Not only did the visa situation force him to drop his esports players, but Moist Esports won’t recoup any of the damages as a result of the denial. MoistCr1TiKaL states that the U.S. government is not liable for any damages they were directly responsible adding more frustration to the situation.

Despite all the difficulties, MoistCr1TiKaL expressed pride in the team who has competed well throughout the Apex Legends tournament. He also promised to keep everyone updated on the lawsuit as it develops.

Major Order Complete. Sony Defeated By The Helldivers 2 Community

Helldivers 2 is one of 2024’s best-selling games. Since its launch, Helldiver 2 earned overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam for its addictive gameplay and community-driven approach to a live service game.

This all took a turn for the worst when Sony announced plans to force PC and console players to link an active PlayStation Network account. And yes, this goes for players who don’t own a PlayStation or have a PlayStation account.

Of all the gaming communities that Sony could have pissed off, Helldivers 2 was certainly the WORST. The community quickly organized and review bombed the Helldivers 2 Steam page; amassing over 200K negative reviews.’

After several days of protesting, Sony finally backed down and announced they would be discontinuing any plans to force the PlayStation Network account linking.

Helldivers 2’s creative director said he was impressed by the “willpower” of players who had created immense pressure for Sony in only a few days.

The Steam page is already showing signs of leveling out as users remove or update their reviews.
