Do you ever go rock up to a restaurant on a Saturday night at short notice, hoping to grab a table, only to be told - “Sorry, we’re full.”

It’s annoying. Especially because you know, if you just knew the right people, you’d be whisked through to the best table in the place, without saying a word.

Or how about when you’ve paid hundreds to go to a concert or sporting event, only to end up freezing your proverbials off, sitting behind a pillar, just about able to see the tiniest bit of action by craning your neck 90 degrees, and squinting right off into the distance …

Yet you can spy the corporate hotshots — who most likely had a backstage tour and tickets to the afterparty — sitting in their heated box, sipping complimentary champers, having not paid a penny for entry.

As frustrating as that is, it’s all about one thing - Access. And those in the top 0.1% are the ones who get access.

Or at least, they were the ones who got access.

Access in Web3

Web3 stands to change that, with blockchain tech and NFT’s providing a verifiable way to ensure almost anyone can have access to private backrooms — both physically and digitally.

Just one example is the FlyFish Club, an NFT gated top tier seafood restaurant in New York that serves the holders of their NFT’s exclusively.

These NFT’s are so highly sought after they sold out on release. They’re currently going for around 2 ETH or $3700 for the lowest tier of entry, with the higher going for 5.5 ETH or over $10,000.

Okay, that’s still a lot of dough … But at the same time, plenty of lower cost exclusive access opportunities are emerging. This is just another reason why getting in on the ground floor with NFT projects might not cost you a lot now … But could give you “celebrity” status and unparalleled access a few years down the line.

TIME FOR CARBON CREDITS

The United Arab Emirates has long been pioneering greater transparency and reliability in increased carbon management, and their new partnership with the Venom Blockchain is testament to this.

Venom blockchain itself is carbon neutral, so this seems like the obvious partnership to help the UAE meet its ambitious targets of lowering carbon emissions 40% by 2030.

The deal was sealed when Venom announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the UAE government to create and deploy the National Carbon Credit System.

Not only does this further cement the UAE’s position as a leading driver of Web3 technology, but it’ll no doubt help Venom, who are on a mission to onboard a billion users onto the blockchain and transform the financial landscape before 2026.

AT THE COPA, COPACACRYPTO

What do you get when you combine the words "digital," "real," "electronic," and "transaction?"

The answer … DREX.

(Yeah, we’re not sure on that one, either!)

Like it or lump it though, this is what some brainy Brazilian boffins have decided will be the name of the country’s new central bank digital currency.

Set to launch in 2024, DREX is expected to utilise distributed ledger technology (DLT) for wholesale interbank transactions and tokenised bank deposits for retail access.

Chief of cybersecurity at the Central Bank, Aristides Cavalcante was quoted as saying DREX should make financial products and services cheaper, while offering greater security for entrepreneurs and consumers.

PAYPAL LAUNCHES STABLECOIN: REVOLUTIONARY OR RISKY?

Last week, PayPal became the first major US financial company to launch its own dollar-backed stablecoin.

Where most cryptocurrencies get their value based on how much traders are willing to pay for them at a given time, stablecoins are backed by a physical asset like fiat currencies, or gold.

The coin (innovatively named ‘PayPal USD or PYUSD for short) is redeemable at a 1:1 rate with US dollars.

Existing PayPal users should find the integration of the coin seamless, while new users to the platform will be able to take advantage of a low barrier to entry if they want a piece of the digital currency space.

The move is sure to increase competition in the stablecoin market, and will likely prompt regulatory discussions, as the financial world adapts to the emergence of innovative digital assets.

Whenever you’re browsing a social media platform, either from a networking standpoint, or when looking for advice, you don’t have much choice but to take people at face value, and assume they know what they’re doing.

For the most part, when it comes to things like qualifications, experience, and even testimonials, no one’s going to ask for verifiable proof whether you are who you say you are. But that can lead to big problems …

We’ve all seen the fitness “expert” who doesn’t really know what they’re doing … The financial guru who couldn’t be trusted with 50 pence … And even people advising on topics as serious as health and disease, who have little more credibility than just a big following and some fancy videos.

That’s where Blockchain can save the day.

By completely eradicating the ‘fake it til you make it’ imposters, we can allow for social profiles and digital identities to become elevated by publishing qualifications, experience and other relevant information.

This means your digital identity carries along with it the badges of your past competencies. In other words blockchain tech lets people trust what they see online again.

In other words … **So long, scammers!**

Have you ever wondered why some people pay £500 a month for a fancy health club membership, when they could get access to a gym with better opening hours (often 24/7,) and more high-tech, newer, more varied equipment for £15 a month?

This cheaper gym would likely help them get BETTER results and be more convenient, yet people are happy to splash the cash and spend 10, 20, even 40 times more to gain access to somewhere a bit posher.

The reason? Social capital - the real-world example of “It’s not what you know … It’s who you know?”

When you spend time at “higher end” places like expensive gyms, fancy golf courses or private members clubs, you spend time around people who can open up a whole new world of opportunities for you. (Essentially … networking.)

Knowing how to improve your social capital in a Web2 world is easy. (Even if the price for entry can be high.) Just hang out where the ‘in-the-know people’ are. But how do we do that in Web3?

Social Capital in Web3

Well, DAO’s and NFT communities are the place to cash in on social capital. You have everyone from millionaire VC’s, to talented artists and skilled professionals all conversing via Web3.

Last weeks international Web3 event web3wave.io was a huge success and a great confirmation we’re heading in the right direction. Speakers flocked in from the UK Government, Binance, Coinbase and Redbull racing all concluding that education is the key to mass adoption of Web3 across industries.

GUCCI SAYS “CIAO BELLA” TO NFT PROJECT

Gucci is rewarding holders of its Material NFTs with exclusive physical items, such as a wallet or duffle bag, for no additional cost.

Back in March, Gucci minted 2,896 NFTs as part of the Gucci Grail project with 10KTF. The Gucci Material Vault NFT is currently priced at over $300 or 0.18 ETH, and holders will have to exchange their NFT in order to gain one of the exclusive items.

What does this mean for the Web3 world?

Well, with luxury companies like Gucci now leading the way and giving NFT holders extra incentives, we’ll likely see a wave of similar brands embracing the trend, and incentivising fans and collectors to hop on board the Web3 train purely to get access to gated communities and goods.

LIKE TAMAGOTCHIS? YOU’LL LOVE THIS.

If you were born in the 80s or early 90s, chances are, you had the pleasure (read: mental torture) of owning and caring for a Tamagotchi.

Well, if you’ve been missing your virtual pal, and longing for them to make a return. You’re in luck … almost.

Japanese video game publisher Bandai Namco has partnered with Oasys to create an AI-powered virtual pet game called Ryuzo, centred around NFT-based digital creatures known as Ryu.

Much like your beloved Tamagotchi, the Ryu will develop a personality and unlock different abilities based on user interaction. Whether the Ryu will also happily let you feed them, pet them, pick up their poop, and then die suddenly, leaving you heartbroken and distraught, only time will tell.

(And no, we don’t have trust issues … Not at all.)

This appears to be the next move in a growing trend of blockchain-based gaming, with major gaming companies like Bandai Namco and Sega eyeing blockchain gaming as the future of the industry.

CAN CRYPTO SAVE THE CLIMATE?

What’s this? A Greta Thunberg-endorsed NFT?

No, not quite. But the blockchain has ‘gone green’ this week, as Google Cloud has announced its collaboration with the Celo Network to run a validator on the Celo blockchain.

The partnership aims to support the growth of sustainability-focused startups and mission-aligned projects in the Celo ecosystem.

Since its mainnet launch on Earth Day in 2020, over 3,700 tons of CO2 have been offset by the Celo blockchain, and it’s been carbon-negative since Day 1.

Now that’s Greta off our back, it’s just The SEC we have to watch out for.

Well, Alison, if you're looking to make big bucks in the brave new world of Web3, now's the time to get in on the action! 

The job market in the blockchain and crypto scene is blowing up faster than Great Aunt Ruth after an all-you-can-eat buffet.

There’s around 14 jobs for every 1 developer out there right now. (No, that’s not a typo).

We’re not talking small-fry companies or only specialist tech firms, either. All the big baller companies are getting in the game too - web3.career currently lists over 2,000 UK jobs based around Web3 skillsets.

But when it come to digital assets, the idea of ownership is a lot more murky. Do you REALLY own any personal data online? How about that best seller book you bought on your Kindle? Or in my case, that iOS Toca World game expansion pack my daughter roped me into buying...

Ownership in Web3

When it comes to Web3, ownership gets a whole lot clearer.

Thanks to decentralisation, users are in full control of their funds, digital assets and other valued items in the digital world. You have sole control of your assets, so no one can pull the rug out underneath them and claim your precious belongings that you’ve busted your butt to acquire.

KISHIDA KOMMITS TO KRYPTO

At a keynote address during the WebX conference in Tokyo last week, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida once again reaffirmed the country’s commitment to Crypto and Web3. Then, later that day, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao announced the cryptocurrency exchange would be launching on a new Japanese platform this August.

Japan has already been somewhat of a forerunner in disruptive technologies, and this move is only going to cement their position as being ahead of the curve. Expect plenty of economic growth, brand new investment, and a whole host of new job opportunities to come from this.

Trip to Japan, anyone?

PUTIN PLANS DIGITAL RUBLE

Last Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially signed the digital Ruble into law.

This is Russia’s first real large scale move into the world of cryptocurrency, and the bill was signed having already gone through three thorough hearings in the courts. Some commentators believe that given the massive financial restrictions imposed on the country by the West due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, this could be a way to bypass those.

By embracing digital currency, Russia aims to modernise its financial system and enhance financial inclusion. This may also aid in counteracting inflation, and providing more efficient payment systems.

Anatoly Aksakov, the head of the parliament's committee on financial markets did note however, that the digital ruble will also allow controlling and limiting the ways citizen can spend them. He pointed out this would be a benefit for parents keeping an eye on their children’s spending.

However, given the way the country is governed, whether the level of ‘control’ will stop there, only time will tell …

ALL “EYES” ON WORLDCOIN

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has launched the Worldcoin crypto project. Its goal? To create a global cryptocurrency accessible to every person on the planet.

Their approach is certainly different from the norm, with tokens being distributed through a Universal Basic Income model, removing the regular barrier of mining.

But if you’re worried about the ever-increasing use of AI, and clever folks potentially using bots to trick the system … Don’t be. Altman plans to use retina scanning to verify users, in a kind of defacto passport.

Putin. No. Sorry. Something else we talked about... 

Ownership.

In Web2, we’ve got far too used to our assets and digital identities not actually being ours. And large corporations have BIG control over what we own. Web3 stands to change this by championing ownership at every stage, letting the user take charge of their funds, assets and identity. 

As technology and Web3 evolve, we’ll start having even more ownership of our “stuff,” and big brother/ big tech/ government/ whatever-you-want-to-call-it will have less and less sway over what we actually own … And that can only be a good thing.

This week’s principle… Exclusivity

Exclusivity goes hand-in-hand with one of our other core principles here at Roster, scarcity. Because while something doesn’t have to be exclusive to be scarce, it DOES have to be scarce to be exclusive.

I mean, there are plenty of things in low supply that also have low demand … But when was the last time you heard of an ‘exclusive’ party where every man and his dog could go along?

Exclusivity has long been a highly-effective marketing game plan for brands in the Web2 world. Particularly those in the luxury goods and experiences sector. Fashion brands will create exclusive lines for a limited number of pieces. Holiday companies will sell high-priced, exclusive getaways with very limited spaces, and so on.

However, exclusivity isn’t limited to the higher end of the market…

A recent mass scale example was Spotify’s signing of Joe Rogan. Before this, you could listen to Rogan almost anywhere. But after the deal, Spotify was the ONLY place you could go to hear JRE, which brought millions more subscribers (and a whole lot more advertising revenue) to the platform.

Exclusivity in Web3

Exclusivity lends itself incredibly well to Web3. Many of the biggest NFT launches have required buyers to already hold other NFTs in similar projects, or to have exclusive access to certain networks, to even have a chance of getting their hands of a limited (aka: scarce) NFT.

More and more brands are realising that to really stand out and build reputation, exclusivity isn’t just a nice to have … It’s a must.

WEB-3 GOING GAGA FOR GOOGLE

New policies at Google Play now allow for blockchain-based digital content within apps and games.

The change is a long time coming, with more and more apps integrating blockchain features and digital currencies, so we’re pleased to see Google Play finally recognising how the industry is changing, and moving to accommodate that.

Developers of apps in the Google Play store that use tokenised digital assets secured on a blockchain will have to complete a Financial Features Declaration, but that’s no bad thing, and if anything, will likely increase user confidence.

Joseph Mills, group product manager of Google Play was quoted as saying - "As part of the policy update, we’re requiring that apps be transparent with users about tokenized digital assets.”

Good move, Joe … Good move.

JUDGE DECLARES RIPPLE LABS “NOT GUILTY”

The tide is turning against the SEC, as they suffered yet another setback in their seeming onslaught against Crypto.

The SEC had filed a lawsuit against Ripple Labs, alleging that their native token — XRP — was an unregistered security. However, the court ruled that the sale of XRP on exchanges is not an investment contract, which is a huge win for Ripple.

Before you get too carried away, we do need to say the ruling wasn’t absolute, and the dispute is expected to go to trial … But this is still very positive news for exchanges. The value of XRP surged immediately following the verdict, and the outcome could have significant (positive) implications for the classification and regulation of cryptocurrencies in the United States

UBISOFT GUNNING HARD FOR BLOCKCHAIN

At the risk of this newsletter turning into some love letter for Ubisoft, seeing as we’ve mentioned them multiple times recently, the gaming giants have done it again. This time, they’ve joined the Cronos blockchain as a validator.

The gaming industry is still leading the way in the adoption of blockchain technologies, and this move signifies another huge step forward.

In their role as validator, Ubisoft will enhance network security and governance on the Cronos blockchain. They join a pool of 26 other operators and contributors to already enlisted by Cronos, including Crypto.com, Allnodes Blockdaemon, and Dora Factory.

Despite being in somewhat of a bear market, and hearing a lot of ‘doomsday news’ about Crypto, the overall outlook for Web3 is still majorly positive.

In terms of adoption, look at it like this - It took the Internet 36 years to to reach 1 billion users. Crypto is expected to reach that by 2027, just 18 years after its inception.

Not just that, but major businesses have been jumping on board Web3 initiatives like there’s no tomorrow, with ‘megabrands’ like Nike, Starbucks, Mastercard and Louis Vuitton declaring an interest in everything Blockchain. When you couple that with the recent Bitcoin ETF’s by giants like Blackrock, and while we cant give you an exact time or date, the overall outlook is good and we can see the tides turning more and more in favour of Web3.

HONG KONG = CRYPTO DING DONG

Hong Kong's largest financial training organisation, The Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI), plans to introduce a training program for aspiring virtual asset traders.

Here at Roster, we’re big fans of how they’re doing things in Hong Kong, and their constant push for new Crypto incentives is music to our ears … Especially given how US regulatory bodies have been reacting to Crypto recently.

How the SEC are treating Crypto initiatives right now.

The course is designed to teach traders about digital assets and how to leverage both digital and traditional finance. With over 300,000 traders expected to gain access on launch, it’s yet another positive move, not just for Web3 in Hong Kong, but the world over.

BITCOIN ORDINALS SEES 2,834% INCREASE IN 3 MONTHS

A 2,834% increase sounds impressive, right?

But what are Bitcoin ordinals? Well, they’re basically NFT’s built on Bitcoin rather than Ethereum or Solana. (If you want to see some examples, check out Magic Eden.)

Between Q2 and Q3 though, trading volume of Bitcoin Ordinals surged to $210 million, which is a 2,834% increase. TL:DR - This is exciting.

Not just that, but the trading volume of Bitcoin on exchanges surpassed $4.2 trillion in the first half of 2023. And seeing as Ordinals represent just a fraction of this, the prospects for even more exponential future growth are strong.

IS THIS WHAT TERMINATOR WARNED US ABOUT?

If you’ve been worried about robots coming for you job … Don’t be. (At least not yet.)

Because while it’s clear some professions will soon be made obsolete due to AI, actually, this change in workplace culture and tech represents a massive opportunity. And emerging data backs this up …

Job searches for Crypto-based roles recently saw a 1,457% increase, and AI-related job searches also saw a substantial rise, growing by 853% during the same period. Among these, the most popular roles were for data scientists, machine learning engineers, and AI researchers, along with blockchain developer roles.

Given the mainstream’s (welcome) adoption of ChatGPT, AI jobs are now 4x more commonly searched than crypto jobs. The potential here is really exciting. In fact, robots aren’t stealing our jobs … They’re likely going to help us get better jobs, bigger pay packets, and potentially make our working lives a whole lot easier.

Without sounding too much like Web3 fanboys, the real answer is - EVERY area and EVERY industry.

Unlike most technological advances, which are industry-specific, Web3 is about ownership and decentralisation, meaning the confines on its use are few and far between. But we don’t like vague answers here at Roster, so let’s dive a little deeper …

The main areas we’re seeing large scale adoption of Web3 are -

- Supply chain management (De Beers Diamond Mining)
- Fashion (Gucci, Prada, Nike, Adidas)

This week’s principle… Authority

How many times when shopping online do you think twice about the validity of your purchase, whether it’s scrolling through the terms and conditions or completely ignoring the fine print?

But why is that?

The answer: Authority.

Reputation, background, and experience all tie in to the authority we give to brands. Consumers eat up the new products being released by giant brands purely because the authority they’ve accrued makes us as buyers trust in their vision. cough* cough* every Apple product since 2005

Authority in Web3

In Web3, things work differently though, because the natural hierarchy between buyer and seller is less pronounced, meaning brands in Web3 can’t operate with their Web2 mindset.

With transparent blockchains, there’s no room for any sleaze in Web3. Publicly displayed wallets where users can track transactions is the new way to build authority. Coinbase, Binance, OKX and all these various exchanges support users’ efforts to track transactions and keep them accountable which in turn translates to a large valuable user base.

Alternatively, some brands (like Nike) might have no authority in Web3, but they’re partnering with brands who do. In Nike’s case, that came in the form of them acquiring RTFKT, a Web3 native businesses focusing on digital fashion which helped Nike gain a type of authenticity Web2 native brands wouldn't typically be able to create.

So authority is just as important in Web3 as in Web2 … We’re just reframing how that authority is built, and how we display it.

BITCOIN = INADEQUATE?

After suing Coinbase last month, the SEC seems to once again have it in for the Crypto market. Though this time, hopefully only temporarily, as they rejected Bitcoin spot ETF filings, citing concerns over adequacy.

All is not lost, however, as The SEC requested asset managers to refile their applications. The market did react with a 5% dip in Bitcoin prices following the rejection, though given the 20% increase when news about spot ETF broke, this is hardly a catastrophe worth writing about.

The long and short of it is, the US government is concerned with market makers manipulating prices, whereas the exchanges are concerned with giving the government such power and control over its services, leaving the two at loggerheads.

But news breaking in the last day or so seems to suggest an approval could be on the cards, as analysts at the brokerage Bernstein said the probability a U.S. spot bitcoin ETF will be approved is fairly high, and the share price of Coinbase has surged, following the refiling.

“GAME ON” FOR UBISOFT’S NFT PROJECT

Ubisoft — the company behind Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell and Far Cry — has announced its first blockchain game called "Champions Tactics."

This is yet another breaking story of gaming companies excitedly jumping aboard the good ship NFT, and staking their claim in the rapidly-expanding web3/gaming trend.

"Champions Tactics" is build on the Oasys blockchain, and utilises non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for in-game assets and interactions. While Oasys may be a new name in the space, the platform is already making waves thanks to its low gas fees, and quick transaction times.

VODAFONE RINGS IN THE NFT ERA

From the Welsh rugby team, to the tennis at Wimbledon, to Glastonbury, and now Cardano … Vodafone is putting its fingers in lots of partnership pies.

While no formal project has been announced with Cardano, the global telecoms giant has made their intentions clear.

And what’s impressed us most, has been their use of Web3 jargon to communicate, making them come across a lot more genuine than the typical Web2 company entering Web3 looking to simply hop on the bandwagon for a quick cash grab.

Vodafone is also building a community through its Discord, and could well kick things off by using a Web3 approach to reward schemes or loyalty bonuses for customers.

Brands like Nike, Prada, Ralph Lauren are in Web3 for a reason. 

While it might seem like ‘the powers that be’ aren’t exactly fighting Crypto’s corner just yet, that DEFINITELY doesn't paint the full picture. 

Sure, as you read above, the SEC may be looking to make it difficult for Crypto and Web3 to take off, but when you consider that over $5 billion USD worth of Bitcoin is held in the US treasury … And that more than half of Fortune 100 companies are already building Web3 solutions, including giants like Microsoft …

It’s safe to say, even if big brands and institutions aren’t out and proud about their love of Web3, they ARE utilising it, they ARE planning for the future, and their actions show us, they’re 100% on board.

Breaking news for animated movie fans, as The Nouns DAO and Atrium are partnering to launch the first animated movie funded by a DAO, "The Rise of Blus: A Nouns Movie"

While Nouns are NFTs, based around 32×32 pixel characters. Like so:

The film focuses on 13-year old Noun and his friends, as they battle to save the floating cloud city of Blus. The film’s budget of $2.75 Million has been provided by the Nouns DAO treasury. And while there’s still time to get in on the action, to gain access to the DAO, you need to own a Noun NFT.

At the time of writing, that’ll set you back 35 ETH or £51,000.

Sorry Cartman, no dice.

We’ve already seen big strides to incorporating Web3 technology at sporting events and in music. Looks like the big screen is next on the list.

BLOCKCHAIN BIRDIE OR BOGEY?

Global Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has partnered with Majesticks GC, becoming the first Web3 sponsor for a golf team competing in the LIV Golf League.

The Saudi Arabian owned LIV, with two-time major winner Greg Norman as CEO, currently boasts several major champions and former world number ones on their books, including the likes of Dustin Johnson, Sergio García, Martin Kaymer, and Lee Westwood.

With over 500,000 daily views of the LIV League, this is a great opportunity to expose Web3 to a new community. Couple that with OKX being one of the largest centralised crypto exchanges serving over 500 markets and doing nearly $1 billion in trading volume every 24 hours, these are exciting times ahead.

THE AMAZING ARTIST WHO WENT FROM BROKE TO 7 FIGURES IN NFT SALES

Just 3 years ago, New York-based digital artist Emily Yang (also known as pplpleasr) was unemployed and broke.

During the lockdown, she discovered DeFi and was intrigued by the various applications, yet noticed that these DeFi projects lacked quality artwork.

This led to her creating 3D artwork for various DeFi projects, and she was commissioned by Uniswap V3 to create animated art for them. Two of these pieces — "Apes Together Strong" and "x*y=k." — later sold at auction for $111,186 and $986,911 respectively.

Yang’s artwork has become so popular, she even has her own DAO - PleasrDAO. Her success also led to the establishment of the Stand With Asians Community Fund and an NFT collective for charitable work.

We love stories like this, as it shows just what’s possible with a little bit of talent, a good splash of hard work, and the foresight to tap into the endless opportunities web3 offers.

Web3 isn’t just about new technology… It represents a new way of thinking, focused primarily on the principle of ownership. From paying for your groceries in digital currencies to receiving your wages in Bitcoin, these are both examples of web3 implementation in daily life that might not be as far away as we expect. 

Real world utility for NFT’s is also here, and we’re already beginning to optimise our daily work tasks with AI. In the near future it won’t be a surprise when not having to leave your house due to the Metaverse becoming the norm. 

It’s only when you take a step back, are open to exploring all the new opportunities Web3 can revolutionise, that you realise Web3 represents one of the biggest advancements in history.

Not just that, but you have different levels of access. Did you buy a first class seat on the train, or “slum it” in cattle class? Does your ticket entitle you to access in any VIP or backstage areas?

Access in Web3

In a Web3 world, it becomes dead easy to upgrade your access, and activate a whole host of benefits and extras, thanks to the technology, or, more specifically, Non-Fungible Tokens (aka NFT’s).

We’re already seeing this in sports with Fan Token’s that give holders VIP access and hospitality in the Premier League, UFC, F1 and many more. And the trend is only on the up.

$6.2 MILLION FOR AN NFT?

The infamous ‘Punk6529’ has opened his wallet once more, purchasing Dmitri Cherniak's Ringers 879 NFT, also known as "The Goose." He splashed a cool $6.2 Million on the piece when it was auctioned off at Sotheby’s.

The purchase means 6529 now holds at least 850 NFTs, as he bolstered his collection further by taking advantage of the sale, which contained items from 3 Arrows Capital, a bankrupt former cryptocurrency hedge fund.

Considering the recent regulatory witch hunt on web3, this made a refreshing change, and gave a welcome boost to the Web3 community. Plus, this was the second-most valuable work of generative art ever sold occurring in a downturn market.

Just tell that to Grandma, the next time she asks why you’re wasting money on ‘pictures from the Internet.’

JOIN US ON A “SNEAKER-HUNT”

We’re talking about Epic Games again. This time, it’s thanks to their upcoming collaboration with Nike.

At the time of writing, details are few and far between. (Although the teaser video got us VERY excited.) But rumour has it, Nike have built an NFT-related game using Fortnite Creative 2.0.

Considering Fortnite had 242.9 Million active users in the last 30 days alone, this is likely going to make a real impact to a much wider audience, and bring many first-timers into the Web3 world.

Purely taking into account the cult followings of Nike and Fortnite separately, when it comes to deciding whether to back this project or not, we’d say …

ROLEX (TEMPORARILY) HITS THE BLOCKCHAIN

Want to buy Blockchain assets but don’t have the cash available?

No worries … Why not loan your physical assets and turn them into NFTs or crypto?

Two DeFi initiatives — Arcade and the 4K Protocol — work together to turn physical assets into tokenised NFT’s which can be used to take an NFT backed loan out all on the blockchain.

The main benefit of doing this? Highly competitive interest rates, as the pool of lenders is quite literally the entire crypto community.

Seeing Arcade recently achieved over $100 million in real NFT lending volume, and news of two high-value Rolexes hitting the market this week has certainly opened people’s eyes to the potential for real-world assets in DeFi.

Plus, the physical collectibles market is only growing, with it estimated to reach $1 trillion within 10 years.

All new tech seems a bit rough around the edges at the start, that's because the pioneers are busy fine-tuning the code. Sure, Web3 is still finding its feet, and yes, the tech-speak can make it seem a bit out of reach. 

Remember though, when the internet and email came about, it was all Greek to us, but look how second nature it's become! Web3 will follow the same path, and believe us, it'll catch up fast. 

As for the younger folks, blockchain and decentralised models will become such a seamless part of daily life, they'll be living Web3 without even realising it! 

So, let's embrace this wave of change together, the future's closer than you think.

This week we're exploring the principle of ownership.

A lot of people ‘crushing it’ in business right now, don’t really own their business. That might seem like a funny thing to say, but think about it - They’re playing on other people’s platforms.

So all those Insta celebs we follow, or the TikTok stars, the YouTubers with millions of followers … they don’t really ‘own’ their followings, because they could be shut down overnight.

In the same way, you’ve probably heard about creators being demonetised, and even people having PayPal or bank accounts shut down, because they annoyed the wrong person, or said the wrong thing.

Obviously, these cases are few and far between. But they still happen. And it goes to show one thing - It’s very tough to have full ownership of your digital assets in a web2 world.

Ownership in Web3

As you’ll know if you read these emails, web3 stands to change all that. Blockchain technology allows people all over the world to have true ownership over their digital assets through digital wallets and NFT’s. And, without going down too much of a conspiracy theory rabbit hole, decentralisation means it’s going to be a lot harder for ‘the powers that be’ to shut anyone down or restrict their access to finances, if they step outta line.

SEC SUES COINBASE

Coinbase, the largest American crypto exchange, is being sued by the SEC. (US Securities and Exchange Commission.)

This might sound a bit like deja vu, after the SEC also went after Binance for similar charges. But the long and the short of it is, Coinbase is accused of facilitating unlawful buying and selling of crypto asset securities, without proper registration.

Word on the street is, this could make for a rocky period in the world of crypto. Especially with altcoins, as these have taken the largest hit since the news.

The one positive to come from this though? It seems the crypto community has united strongly once again. Constant attacks from US legislators, along with the frequent doom and gloom narrative portrayed by the mainstream media has helped web3-ers worldwide unite. Plus, let’s be real here - We’ve faced far worse news and greater challenges in the past, so this is very likely a minor blip on the timeline.

A16z HITS LONDON

Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm a16z is expanding internationally, by setting up new offices in jolly old London Town.

This is yet another boost in the UK’s quest to become a web3 hub. And actually, when combined with the above news about the SEC, it’s not actually been too bad a week for British blockchain advocates.

Chris Dixon, founder and managing director of a16z crypto fund said -"We're thrilled to open our first international office in a jurisdiction that welcomes blockchain technology and is committed to creating a predictable business environment by pursuing regulations that both embrace Web3 and protect consumers."

The move follows months of talks with UK financial bigwigs and top dog himself, Rishi Sunak, who released a statement saying -

“As we cement the UK’s place as a science and tech superpower, we must embrace new innovations like Web3, powered by blockchain technology, which will enable start-ups to flourish here and grow the economy.”

BLANKOS BLOCK[CHAIN] PARTY

Amazon Prime Gaming and Blankos Block Party have partnered up to release exclusive NFTs.

Blankos Block Party is a free-to-play, online multiplayer party game native to the blockchain, which already gained over 1,000,000 users prior to its launch.

Anyone who wants to be eligible for the NFTs needs to firstly be an Amazon Prime member, then link their Amazon and Blankos accounts, before browsing and claiming rewards.

The exclusive bundles give access to extra Blankos characters, accessories, and in-game items.

This is just one of many NFT and blockchain integrations with popular games in recent weeks, and it only signifies the potential for NFTs to become a mainstream asset class and acts as a step towards NFT adoption.
