Once you log in, you’ll see either up to an 80% bonus on purchased miles or up to a 45% discount on the price. The promo runs until March 5, 2026. On the surface, “80% bonus” sounds big. But what actually matters isn’t the headline, it’s the math. Let’s walk through it.

What You’re Really Paying 💳

With the strongest discount, miles price out at roughly 2.3 cents CAD per mile before tax. Since purchases are processed by Points.com (a Canadian company), GST or HST applies, pushing your real cost closer to 2.5 to 2.75 cents per mile. That’s your rough break-even range. If you redeem below that value, you’re likely overpaying. If you can redeem at 3 cents per mile or more, then it can start to make sense.

Let’s simplify it:

If a flight costs $1,200 in cash or 40,000 miles, you’re getting 3 cents per mile in value. In that case, buying at around 2.5 cents and redeeming at 3 cents creates a spread in your favour. But if that same flight costs $700 or 40,000 miles, you’re only getting 1.75 cents per mile.

Buying at 2.5 cents to redeem at 1.75 cents doesn’t work. That’s why buying miles just because there’s a promo can be risky.

When Buying Miles Makes Sense

There are really only a few scenarios where purchasing miles is logical:

1. You’re Topping Off for a Specific Booking: You’ve already found award availability. You’re short 10,000–20,000 miles. Buying a small amount unlocks a high-value redemption.

This is the most common and safest use case.

2. You’ve Found Exceptional Award Pricing: Flying Blue Promo Rewards can sometimes offer strong redemptions, especially on transatlantic routes. If you’ve identified a booking that delivers 3–4+ cents per mile, buying miles can work.

But you should confirm availability before purchasing. Miles purchases are non-refundable.

3. You Need Immediate Access to Miles: Sometimes you don’t want to wait for a transfer from a credit card program. Buying can be a speed play. Just make sure the math still works.

The Bottom Line 🧠

Flying Blue uses harmonized award pricing, meaning the minimum price from North America to Europe is the same whether you’re flying from Montreal or Toronto.

Aeroplan is running another Buy & Gift Points promotion, offering up to a 100% bonus on purchased points until February 16, 2026 at 11:59pm PT. Getting double the points sounds appealing, but the real question is simple: does buying points actually make sense for you? Below is a clear, practical look at the offer, the math behind it, and when it is (and is not) worth considering.

What the promotion offers

Aeroplan sells points at a fixed price all year. This sale does not lower that price. Instead, it adds bonus points based on how many you buy:

Buy 5,000–25,000 points and get a 50% bonus
Buy 30,000–70,000 points and get a 75% bonus
Buy 80,000 points or more and get a 100% bonus
The top tier is the headline offer, where you end up with twice as many points as you purchase.

The math, without the advanced functions 💸

The regular price of Aeroplan points is 3.75 cents per point (CAD). With a 100% bonus, you pay 3.75 cents and receive two points. That works out to 1.88 cents per point. If your bonus is lower than 100%, your cost per point is higher. This matters because Aeroplan points are usually worth around 2.0–2.2 cents each when used well. Buying at 1.88 cents leaves some room for value, but not much.

Taxes and how you pay matter

Aeroplan point purchases are processed by Points.com. That means two things. First, you will not earn travel or airline bonus points on your credit card. Second, if you use a Canadian billing address, sales tax is added, which pushes your real cost higher. Using a US credit card with a US billing address avoids Canadian taxes and keeps the math cleaner. Using a Canadian card makes the deal weaker.

How many points can you buy

Each Aeroplan member can buy up to 1,000,000 points per calendar year, with higher per-transaction limits during this promotion. Most people will never come close to this, but it can matter for families pooling points.

When buying points can make sense 👍

Buying Aeroplan points can work if you are just short of a specific booking and need points right away. It can also make sense if you often redeem points on partner airlines, where award prices are fixed and more predictable. Family Sharing can help too, since multiple accounts can buy points and use them together for planned trips.

Other ways to earn Aeroplan points

Credit card welcome bonuses are often the cheapest way to earn Aeroplan points (outside of using Chexy to pay your bills 🤑), even if they take some time to post. American Express Membership Rewards is making a meaningful change for Canadian cardholders. Starting January 3, 2026, points will transfer 1:1 to Flying Blue, the loyalty program of Air France and KLM.

Before this update, the transfer rate wasn’t great, which made Flying Blue less attractive for Canadians. With the new 1:1 ratio, Flying Blue now sits alongside Aeroplan and Avios as a top-tier transfer partner, and it changes the math in a real way.

With the new transfer rate, flights to Europe are a lot easier to reach using Amex points. Flying Blue economy awards to Europe often start at 25,000 miles one-way, while Business Class usually starts at 60,000 miles.

To put that in simple terms:

Under the old 1:0.75 ratio, a 25,000-mile ticket needed about 33,333 Amex points
Under the new 1:1 ratio, it needs 25,000 Amex points

Huge news for those who use Amex and fly with Air France or KLM: last week, American Express upped the transfer ratio of Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio. That means 1,000 Amex MR points = 1,000 Flying Blue miles, instead of the old 0.75 rate.

Let’s break down why this matters.

⭐️ What Changed (And Why It’s a Big Deal)

Until now, Amex points transferred to Flying Blue at a 1:0.75 ratio. So a “60,000-mile” business class flight actually costs 80,000 Amex points behind the scenes.

With the new 1:1 transfer:

25,000 Flying Blue miles = 25,000 Amex points
60,000 Flying Blue miles = 60,000 Amex points

It sounds obvious, but it’s huge. Flying Blue redemptions are now priced exactly as advertised, which puts them much more in “bookable” territory for us Canadians.

What Flying Blue Flight Redemptions Cost

At standard (non-promo) rates, flight redemptions for Air France or KLM start at:

25,000 miles one-way in economy
40,000 miles in premium economy
60,000 miles in business class

That’s already competitive for flights to Europe, but you get even better value when monthly Promo Rewards enter the chat.

🔥 Monthly Promo Rewards (the Real Value)

Flying Blue runs monthly Promo Rewards that usually discount select routes by 25%. Some months it’s economy, some months business class, and occasionally both. For example, for the month of January 2026, you can save 25% off business class flights out of Montreal (although you need to be a Flying Blue Extra subscriber, but most months you don’t need to be).

With these promos, the redemption pricing drops to:

18,750 miles one-way in economy
30,000 miles in premium economy
45,000 miles in business class

A one-way business class seat to Europe for 45,000 Amex points is a strong value, especially compared to other airline programs (like Aeroplan) that often creep well past 80,000 to 100,000 points.

Here are some recent flight redemptions that were available with Flying Blue’s 25% Promo Rewards:

Toronto (YYZ) to Amsterdam (AMS) in KLM business class for 45,000 Miles

Montreal (YUL) to Lisbon (LIS) in Air France Economy for 18,750 Miles

In cash, these one-way flights usually run about $1,500 in economy and over $7,000 in business class. When you book using Promo Rewards, that drops to just 18,750 miles for economy or 45,000 miles for business, which works out to roughly 8 cents per mile in economy and 16+ cents per mile in business. This is an insane value.

Some Things to Note About Flying Blue Redemptions

A few quick caveats before you go ahead and transfer those Amex points:

Award availability varies by route and month
Some promos are limited to Flying Blue Extra subscribers (like this month)
Always find the award first, then transfer points (transfers are one-way)

Let’s take a look at what’s actually worth your attention. 👇

🤑 The 20% Off Deal

The sale applies to select routes out of Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL), mostly to Asia, the Middle East, and parts of South Asia. Think destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Dubai, Delhi, Colombo, Kathmandu, Bali, and a handful of others.

Not every date or route shows the full discount, and availability varies a lot. This isn’t a “book anything and save 20%” situation; it’s more of a hunt-and-reward deal. You’ll find the best deals if your dates are flexible.

One standout redemption we’re seeing is from Toronto (YYZ) to Bangkok (BKK) in economy for 47,500 Avios, or just under $1,000 CAD in cash.

At 47,500 Avios, you’re getting roughly 2.1 cents per Avios, which is right at (or slightly above) what many people consider a strong baseline value. It’s not a once-in-a-lifetime sweet spot, but for a long-haul economy flight to Southeast Asia, it’s a solid redemption, especially if cash prices stay high.

Business class discounts are more limited. While up to 20% off is advertised, we didn’t find any business class deals worth highlighting, so availability may be tough to find.

Qatar is also layering in bonus Avios if you book flights by January 14th, 2026, for travel by March 31st, 2026:

💳 How to Get the Avios for These Deals

One of the easiest ways to book these discounted flights is by earning Amex Membership Rewards points, then:

Transfer Amex points 1:1 to British Airways Avios
Move those Avios 1:1 to Qatar Airways Privilege Club

If you’re not earning a lot of Amex points month-to-month, this is where Chexy comes in. ✈️ Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Privilege: Up to 100,000 Scene+ Points

This is Scotia’s most premium card, and the new welcome bonus lives up to the hype. If you unlock the full offer, 100,000 Scene+ points are worth about $1,000 toward travel, groceries, dining, or Scene+ partners. That’s the highest Scene+ bonus we’ve seen to date.

The Offer: Up to 100,000 Points

You’ll earn:

🤑 What Are Scene+ Points Worth?

Scene+ points are simple but flexible. In most cases, 1 Scene+ point = 1 cent when redeemed for travel, groceries, dining, and entertainment through Scene+ partners. No complicated charts, no airline math. ✅

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

60,000 Scene+ points (~$600 in value) can get you:

A round-trip flight within Canada or to the US
Several hotel nights on a mid-range trip
A big chunk of your grocery bill over a few months

100,000 Scene+ points (~$1,000 in value) can cover:

Most (or all) of an international economy flight
Flights + hotel on a short trip

Flying Blue Extra is a paid 12-month subscription that unlocks better award pricing and benefits. For this promo, it’s mandatory.

The lowest-tier package starts at €379 (~$550 CAD). At first glance, that feels steep, until you look at the savings.

Here’s the key math:

25% off a round-trip business class award saves ~30,000 miles
Those 30,000 miles can easily be worth $600–$900+ in real value

If you book even one round-trip business class flight using this promo, Flying Blue Extra can pay for itself. Book two, and it’s a no-brainer.

But is it worth the extra money? It can be worth it if:

You’re booking business class
You’ll use this promo (or others) at least once this year

However, it may not be worth it if:

You’re flying economy class
You won’t redeem miles during the subscription period

How to Get Flying Blue Miles

If you don’t already have Flying Blue Miles, your best option is to transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue at a 1:0.75 ratio.

For these discounted business class flights, you’ll need to transfer 60,000 MR points for a one-way ticket or 120,000 MR points for a round-trip flight.

By putting your rent, bills, and other big expenses on your Amex card through Chexy, you can earn points quickly and hit those huge welcome bonuses, some worth up to 100,000 points.

Let’s say you spend $2,600 on fixed monthly expenses ($2,000 in rent plus $600 in other bills). Charging that to your Amex card gets you to the 70,000-point mark (the first tier of the 100,000-point bonus) in under three months.

The 2026 Chexy referral program 🎉

A lot of you have been asking about referrals, so we’re happy to say they’re officially here for 2026. This year’s program keeps the parts you liked most (earning lower fees) by referring friends and adds something new that makes those benefits last longer. If the friends you refer keep using Chexy, you can now extend your status into the next calendar year. That means the effort you put into referrals does not stop paying off after just one year.

Below is a clear breakdown of how referrals, fees, cashback, and the new status extension work, and how you can benefit from each part. 👀

How referrals work in 2026

At a high level, referrals work the same way as last year. When you successfully refer friends to Chexy, you earn a referral status. That status directly affects the processing fee you pay on your own payments. The more friends you refer, the lower your fee becomes over time.

Every friend you refer receives $15 cashback on their first completed payment. As you continue referring more people, you can move up through different status levels and unlock lower processing fees for yourself.

Referral statuses and what they mean

Once you refer at least one friend, you enter Starter status. At this level, both you and your friend receive $15 cashback.

When you reach Pink status by referring three friends, your reward shifts from cashback to savings. Your processing fee drops to 1.5%, which can add up to more savings by not eating into your points value. ✅

At five referrals, you reach Gold status and your fee drops even further to 1.0%. At ten referrals, you reach Elite status, where your processing fee is just 0.5%. At every level, your referred friends still receive $15 cashback on their first payment.

*These fee examples assume you are paying with a Canadian credit card, where the standard processing fee is 1.75%.

Paying with an international credit card 🌎

If you use an international credit card, which many of you might. Instead of moving to a fixed fee, your referral status gives you a discount off the higher international rate.

Pink: 0.25% discount
Gold: 0.75% discount
Elite: 1.25% discount

Example:
If you’re in Gold (0.75% discount) and paying with an international card:

2.5% – 0.75% = 1.75% final fee

Limits on discounted spending

Referral discounts apply to up to $50,000 in spending per calendar year. This counter starts on March 1, 2026, when the referral program resets, and resets again at the end of the year.

Once you pass $50,000 in discounted spending, any additional payments are charged at the standard fee for your credit card type. 💳

How cashback works this year 💸

There is a small change to cashback in 2026. You will only receive $15 cashback while you are in Starter status. Once you move into Pink, Gold, or Elite, your reward becomes lower processing fees instead of cashback.

Your referred friends will always receive $15 cashback on their first payment, regardless of your status.

New for 2026: extending your status into 2027 🚀

This is the biggest update this year and something many of you asked for. If the friends you refer continue using Chexy, you can now keep your status for an additional calendar year without needing to refer new people.

Your status extension is based on the number of completed payments made by your referred friends, which we call your crew. 👥 We count payments completed in 2026 by friends you referred in 2026, as long as those payments are completed between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Your own payments do not count toward this total.

By the end of January, you will be able to see your progress toward a status extension directly on the Referrals page.

What you need to extend your status

At the end of the year, we will look at the total number of completed payments made by your crew. If you meet the requirement for your current status, we will automatically extend that status until December 31, 2027.

Status extension thresholds

Pink: 15 completed crew payments
Gold: 50 completed crew payments
Elite: 250 completed crew payments

If you hit the requirement for your current status, we’ll automatically extend it until December 31, 2027. 🫶

A quick example

Ryan refers three friends in 2026, which puts him in Pink status.

Friend 1 pays rent monthly → 12 completed payments
Friend 2 pays property tax → 3 completed payments
Friend 3 pays tuition → 1 completed payment

That’s 16 completed payments total. Since Ryan passed the 15-payment requirement, his Pink status is extended through the end of 2027.

✈️ Aeroplan Is Offering Up to 30% Off Points. Is It Actually Worth It?

Aeroplan regularly runs promotions that let members buy points at a discount. The latest offer is live now and gives members up to 30% off purchased Aeroplan points, depending on how many points you buy.

This can look tempting at first glance, especially if you are eyeing a premium flight or need a fast top-up. But like most “buy points” promos, whether this is a good deal depends heavily on how you plan to use those points.

Let’s break it down.

🗓️ Promotion Snapshot

Offer: Up to 30% off Aeroplan points
End date: January 24, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT
Program: Aeroplan Buy & Gift Points

During this sale, the discount you receive depends on the number of points purchased.

Discount tiers:

10,000–19,000 points: 15% off
20,000–79,000 points: 20% off
80,000–99,000 points: 25% off
100,000+ points: 30% off

At the highest tier, the effective cost comes down to approximately 2.63 cents per point (CAD) before taxes.

💸 How This Price Compares

Outside of promotions, Aeroplan points are sold at 3.75 cents per point (CAD). The 30% discount does lower that significantly, but it is still above most reasonable redemption valuations.

If you typically value Aeroplan points at around 2.0–2.2 cents each, this promotion means you are buying points at a price that leaves very little upside — or none at all — unless you redeem them very strategically.

📊 How Many Points Can You Buy?

Aeroplan is fairly generous when it comes to purchase limits:

Up to 1,000,000 points per member per calendar year
Up to 250,000 base points per transaction

If you are part of Aeroplan Family Sharing, multiple household members can purchase points separately and pool them together. In theory, a family group could acquire several million points annually.

💳 Best Credit Card to Use (And a Tax Catch)

Aeroplan point purchases are processed through Points.com, which means:

Purchases do not code as Air Canada or travel
You will not earn airline or travel category bonuses

Taxes matter — a lot

If you use a Canadian credit card with a Canadian billing address, applicable sales tax (GST/HST) will be added. This pushes the real cost per point even higher.

If you have access to a US credit card with a US billing address, taxes are typically not applied. In that case, this promotion may also help you work toward a minimum spending requirement on a new card.

🤔 Who Should Consider Buying Aeroplan Points?

Buying points is rarely a blanket “yes” or “no.” It only makes sense in specific situations.

✅ This can make sense if:

You are short a small number of points for an immediate booking
You already found partner airline award space at fixed prices
You need points right now, not months from now

🚫 This usually does not make sense if:

You are buying points speculatively
You mostly redeem on dynamically priced Air Canada flights
You have time to earn points through credit cards or spending

🌍 Partner Airlines Are the Key

Aeroplan’s dynamic pricing can make Air Canada redemptions unpredictable. Prices rise and fall with cash fares, which limits the value of buying points in advance.

Here’s the breakdown:

🚀 What You’re Actually Getting

Aeroplan sells points at 3.75 cents each, which is already higher than it used to be. With the current bonus structure, the more you buy, the better the multiplier: 55% for smaller buys, 75% for mid-level, and 100% if you go 80,000 points or higher. At the 100% tier, you’re effectively paying 1.88 cents per point, which on paper is lower than Aeroplan’s own 2.1 cent valuation. That sounds great, but the value really depends on how you redeem, not on the sticker price.

When This Deal Actually Makes Sense

This promo shines when you’re booking partner airlines, because those follow a fixed chart and often deliver far more value than what you’re paying to acquire the points. Think ANA, Lufthansa, Swiss, Turkish, Etihad — all the fun stuff ✨. For these flights, it’s very possible to get two, three, or even five times the value of your purchase. If you’re planning a big trip or doing something like a round-the-world redemption, this sale can be legitimately useful. 🤑

There’s also Aeroplan’s Family Sharing feature. If you’ve got multiple travellers in the household, being able to buy up to a million points per person per year is wild. Most programs would never let you acquire that many points, so if you need scale, Aeroplan makes it easy.

What Makes This Less Appealing

Dynamic pricing is the main drawback. If you mostly redeem on Air Canada flights, the “value gap” shrinks fast. When cash prices surge, points prices usually follow, so you can end up redeeming points for far less than what you paid to acquire them. It’s not fun to buy at 1.88 cents and redeem at 1.3 cents. That’s how you lose money without noticing.

Taxes are another problem. If your billing address is Canadian, GST or HST gets added, which pushes your real cost above the advertised rate. A US credit card with a US billing address avoids this and is the best way to buy. Also, since Points.com processes the purchase, you won’t earn any travel bonuses from your credit card, so there’s no multiplier magic happening here.

If you’re saving up Flying Blue Miles or planning a redemption in the near future, you can top up your balance by transferring from Amex Membership Rewards at a 1:0.75 ratio. So, 10,000 Amex points = 7,500 Flying Blue Miles.

Getting to the US from downtown Toronto is about to get a lot easier. Starting Spring 2026, Air Canada will launch new non-stop flights from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to New York (LaGuardia), Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

Each route will run multiple times a day, making it possible to hop down for a quick day trip or weekend away, without the pain of trekking to Pearson. Here’s what you need to know: 👇

Here’s when these new U.S. routes from Billy Bishop take off:

New York (LGA): March 29, 2026 - 4x daily
Chicago (ORD): June 1, 2026 - 2x daily
Washington D.C. (IAD): June 1, 2026 - 1x daily

Aeroplan is back with another “buy points” promo. This time, you might see a bonus as high as 90% when you purchase by October 29th, 2025. But not everyone gets the same deal. For example, I only got 75%, so make sure to check your personalized offer before jumping on this.

What’s the Deal?

Here’s the highest tiered structure (though it varies by member!):

Buy 4,000 to 15,000 points, get a 40% bonus
Buy 20,000 to 60,000 points, get a 60% bonus
Buy 70,000+ points, get a 90% bonus

With the 90% bonus, the effective cost per point drops to about 1.97¢ CAD (including taxes), which is one of Aeroplan’s best offers. However, keep in mind that the last sale a few weeks ago went up to 85%. Aeroplan tends to run these fairly often, so you might see another one around Black Friday.

✅ When It Makes Sense To Buy

Buying points only makes sense if you have a redemption in mind. Otherwise, you’re essentially prepaying for flights at a fixed rate that may or may not work out in your favour.

You should buy points if you’re planning to redeem for a partner airline award (e.g. ANA, Swiss, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines), where Aeroplan uses a fixed distance chart. You can easily get 3 to 5 cents per point in value on long-haul business class flights.

For example, you can sometimes find sweet spot business class redemptions for 60-70k points, like:

Buying 60,000 Aeroplan points under the current promotion would cost you just over $1,000 CAD: a small price compared to paying cash for the same business-class flights, which often top $8,000. In other words, you’re getting the same seat for roughly $7,000 less.

❌ When to Skip This Promo

You should not buy points if:

You mostly fly Air Canada economy class, since dynamic pricing can devalue your points fast.
You’re not ready to book soon. Aeroplan frequently runs sales, so there’s no need to rush (however, this is one of the best sales we’ve seen this year).

The Bottom Line

If you’re chasing a business class redemption or just need to top up your Aeroplan points for an upcoming award flight, this is one of the best opportunities to do so. With points costing less than 2¢ each before tax, buying points now can save you thousands compared to paying cash, especially on long-haul lie-flat seats. 🤑

All other lounges, like Centurion, Escape, and Aspire, remain unlimited. But since Canada doesn’t have any Centurion lounges, Plaza Premium and Priority Pass make up the core of lounge access here, meaning these changes hit us the hardest. 😦

The caps officially start in 2027, but the clock to unlock unlimited access begins January 1, 2026.

🔓 How to Unlock Unlimited Lounge Access Again

Spend $20,000 annually on your Platinum or Business Platinum card, and voilà: unlimited lounge access is restored for you (and your travel companion). Once you hit that threshold, you’ll keep unlimited access for the rest of that year and the entire next one.

The earlier you spend $20k, the longer you get to enjoy the lounges without worrying about running out of visits. This might sound like a lot, but you don’t need to sprinkle it evenly across the year. Big, upfront expenses make this much easier:

Income taxes: Many Canadians have to pay earlier in the year (say $6,000 in taxes), which you can pay with your Amex Platinum and Chexy.
Rent: On average, rent is $2,000 a month x 3 months = $6,000.
Utilities, insurance, or other large annual bills: $4,000 combined.

With just these one-time or big recurring payments, you’re already at the $16 to $17k mark in just a few months. Add regular spending (groceries, travel, subscriptions), and you’re comfortably over the $20,000 threshold, all before summer.

TL;DR: Spend strategically in the first few months, hit $20k fast, and enjoy unlimited lounge access for the majority of the year. Using Chexy to pay for big-ticket items makes it simple, while also racking up points on expenses you’d pay anyway.

🤔 Who Will This Change Really Affect?

If you fly only a few times a year, six Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounge visits might cover you just fine, especially with other unlimited lounges still available.

But if you’re a frequent flyer, or you travel as a couple or family, this hits hard. Those six visits could disappear fast with just two round-trip flights. And when you’re already paying $799 a year for the card, earning back what you paid for feels… not very premium.

Still, if you’re a loyal Platinum cardmember and use it for most of your everyday spending, the $20k threshold is totally within reach.

The Bottom Line

This isn’t the end of Amex Platinum’s reign as one of the best travel credit cards in Canada. If you’re spending $20k a year, you’ll barely notice the change: your lounge privileges stay unlimited, and life goes on.

That said, we can’t help but wonder where this is headed. With the annual fee recently increasing in the US, could Canada be next? If the fee climbs higher than $799 while perks quietly shrink, this Platinum card could start feeling a little stingy.

For now, though, nothing really changes. Keep using your card strategically, enjoy your lounge visits, and keep an eye on what Amex does next.
