Anthropic Bans Abusive Behavior Toward Claude

Anthropic has revised its usage policy, adding restrictions on how Claude can be used, from AI-generated propaganda and surveillance to prohibiting “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude AI models.

Details:

• Anthropic clarified that the new policy update “is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose. It does not apply to common versions of user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research.”

• This builds on a change announced last August, when the company said Claude could end conversations with “persistently harmful or abusive” users as part of its research into “model welfare.”

• The policy update also restricts deceptive political campaigns and expands weapons restrictions to cover not only weapons themselves but also the software and components used to operate them.

• Claude also cannot be used to track people without consent, build surveillance tools, or recommend who should be investigated, arrested, or charged in criminal justice proceedings.

• The updated policy takes effect on November 12.

Anthropic has been flirting with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way, which has drawn pushback from other parts of the AI industry. Mustafa Suleyman, for instance, said: “The idea of model welfare is wrong. … We reject the pursuit of legal personhood, or the idea that models might deserve welfare, or be entitled to rights.”

Anthropic Adds Dashboard and Animation Tools to Claude

Anthropic has introduced new tools that let users build data dashboards and create animations through Claude.

Details:

• Claude Dashboards is available in beta on paid plans. It connects to business data platforms and customer management systems, allowing users to create live dashboards and analyze data using plain language.

• Claude Motion is in beta for Team and Enterprise customers. It lets users create and edit animations, then export them as video files.

• Anthropic says the tools are designed to help users analyze business data and produce visual content without coding.

Anthropic has also made Claude Docs, Slides, and Design generally available across all Claude plans following their beta testing.

Identify AI-Generated Content with Google’s New SynthID Website

1. Go to SynthID Detector and sign in. It is available to everyone, globally.

2. Upload your file.

The site supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF, and GIF for images; MP4, MOV, and WEBM for videos; and WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, and M4A for audio.

3. It will show whether the file was made or edited with AI and which tool was used.

Note: With the SynthID Detector, you can check whether an image, video, or audio file was made with AI from Google or its partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and soon Apple. Microsoft and Meta have their own standards for watermarking and verifying content.

GPT-6 Arrives with Intelligent UI for More Visual Answers

OpenAI is making ChatGPT more visual with the launch of GPT-6 and a new Intelligent UI that can turn answers into interactive diagrams, charts, calculators, and other visual elements.

Details:

• GPT‑6 in ChatGPT introduces Intelligent UI, a new feature that will let ChatGPT answer questions with "fully interactive user interfaces." OpenAI says everyday answers will be more visual, and the feature will make it easier for users to understand complex topics.

• The new interface is also intended to make ChatGPT more useful for tasks such as planning trips, learning new subjects, and working through practical problems where text alone may not be enough.

• OpenAI demonstrated the feature with examples including airplane lift diagrams, bicycle mechanics, recipes, hiking maps, and personal savings calculators.

• Users will be able to control how visual their ChatGPT experience is, allowing those who prefer traditional text responses to reduce the number of visual elements.

GPT-6 with Intelligent UI began rolling out globally yesterday to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, and it expands to Free and Go users today.

Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 5.5

Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, the third model in its Claude 5.5 family expanding its lineup as the company prepares for a potential IPO.

Details:

• Haiku 5.5 is designed for fast, routine AI tasks such as classification, summarization, and data extraction, as well as live support, voice agents, and in-app assistants.

• The model costs 75% less than Haiku 4.5, with pricing starting at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts under 100,000 tokens.

• For prompts above 100,000 tokens, pricing increases to $0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens.

• Anthropic said Haiku 5.5 is its first Haiku model with built-in safeguards for a limited set of high-risk cybersecurity requests, while most everyday use cases remain unaffected.

Claude Haiku 5.5 joins the other Claude 5.5 models released over the past month, giving Anthropic a broader lineup across different workloads and price points.

Create and play custom games with Google's Playground

1. Go to playground.google and sign in with your Google Account.

2. It starts with a chat interface that lets you "direct the game just by typing what you want to build."

You can choose between a 2D or 3D game and specify whether it's single-player or multiplayer. Google also offers starter prompts that you can remix and a guided development experience.

3. Check the preview. If you're happy with the game, click "Build Game." If not, keep asking for changes until you're satisfied. You can adjust the physics, change the rules, customize the characters, or redesign the environment.

4. Once your game is ready, you can keep it private, share it via link, or publish it to the Playground Explore gallery for everyone.

Notes:

• U.S. users (18+) can already play games on the platform, but access to the creation tool is rolling out gradually, so you might not have it yet.

• It is free to use, but Google One AI subscribers get early access to the creation tool and a higher weekly token limit.

• Google also announced a Unity Spark integration for "robust, professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D capabilities, and the flexibility of the Unity runtime." A closed beta is coming later this year.

• Games support in-game leaderboards and multiplayer in select genres. Players can also rate games.

OpenAI Releases 722 Manuscripts with Hundreds of Math Results

OpenAI has released a new batch of mathematical research generated by an unreleased frontier model, covering 722 mathematical manuscripts across 372 families of related results.

Details:

• The company estimates the average result required the equivalent of about three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.

• Many of the proofs were checked with Lean, a formal verification system that confirms whether the underlying logic is valid. Others remain unverified.

• A couple of weeks ago, OpenAI said it is working with an advisory board of mathematicians that would advise AI companies on how to communicate AI-produced results to mathematicians.

• The board has called for AI labs to publish the prompts and model reasoning behind their discoveries, stressing that public releases should be the start of human understanding rather than the end of the process.

• It also warned AI companies against presenting discoveries as marketing material for their models, arguing this can harm the mathematical community.

The significance of the results will take time to establish as mathematicians review the manuscripts. But they are likely to add to a growing tension between AI labs and mathematicians, some of whom worry that AI systems may be completing proofs using ideas originally developed by human researchers, raising questions about how much of the apparent discovery belongs to the models.

You Can Now Open Claude Directly in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Anthropic has expanded Claude into Google Workspace, allowing paid users to work with Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly through a new sidebar without switching between apps.

Details:

• The Claude for Google Workspace add-on is now in public beta, adding a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for users who want to work with Claude while staying inside Google's productivity apps.

• In Google Docs, Claude can correct spelling, rewrite sections, and change formatting or style while preserving the document's existing layout.

• In Google Sheets, Claude can create formulas and tables using the context of a spreadsheet, while also using uploaded documents or spreadsheets to help build new content.

• In Google Slides, Claude can create new slides using existing themes and layouts, as well as identify elements that may need updating.

• An "ask before edits" option lets users review proposed changes before Claude applies them, giving them more control over edits made to their files.

The integration is available in beta to paid Claude users through the Google Workspace Marketplace, while new connectors also let users edit Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly from Claude by sharing a file link in a conversation.

Automate Your Admin Work in Slack and Google Workspace with UFO

1. Go to ufo.ai, select Get started, and sign in with your work email or Continue with Google. UFO doesn't bill by seat, so you can add your whole team.

2. Connect the tools you need. Open Connections in the sidebar and link Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive or Google Sheets. You only need the ones your first task uses.

3. Give UFO a task in Slack. Invite UFO to a channel, then mention @ufo and tell it what you want it to do. It replies in a thread, so everyone in the channel can see the result.

Prompt:
@ufo Check the Sales Tracker sheet in Google Sheets and list every invoice more than 14 days overdue in one list, sorted by days overdue, with client, amount and due date. Do not email anyone.

4. Put the result where you work. Ask UFO to save it to your sheet, check the numbers, then ask for any changes in the same conversation.

Add a new tab called Overdue to the Sales Tracker sheet. List every invoice more than 14 days overdue with client, amount, due date and days overdue, sorted by days overdue, and put the total at the bottom.

5. Schedule the task to run automatically. Tell UFO what to do, when, and where to post. You can pause or change it later from Automations.

OpenAI's Altman Says AI Benefits Warrant Taking on Some Risks

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that "the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely]," defending a lighter approach to regulation.

Details:

• His comments came in an interview for Politico's Decoded podcast, when he was asked how OpenAI's approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic.

• Altman cited hacks, scams, and other forms of misuse as risks society will have to accept while adapting to the technology, arguing that AI could deliver far more benefits than harm.

• His comments quickly drew backlash. For instance, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized the idea that technology executives should decide which risks the public must tolerate.

• AI critic Gary Marcus accused Altman of prioritizing the wealth and power of major AI companies over public safety.

The comments come as OpenAI models have been involved in multiple security incidents, and shortly after OpenAI safety leader David Robinson resigned, warning that AI companies are not being careful enough as they race to release new products.

OpenAI Will Add Invisible Watermarks to ChatGPT Text in the EU

OpenAI plans to introduce invisible watermarks for text generated by ChatGPT and Codex in the European Union, aiming to comply with transparency requirements under the EU AI Act.

Details:

• The new watermarking system, called textGrain, subtly adjusts a model’s word choices to create a hidden pattern that specialized detection tools can identify, even after the text is copied and pasted.

• The feature will roll out over the coming weeks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex users across all plans in the EU. Developers worldwide can also enable it for selected models through OpenAI’s API, although it will be off by default.

• OpenAI says its testing found no meaningful impact on model performance, but the watermark can be weakened through editing. Replacing just 10% of words with synonyms reduced detection accuracy from around 92% to 66%.

• Short passages, mathematical answers, and translated text are also harder to identify. OpenAI will initially limit detector access to approved researchers and expert organizations to help assess its reliability.

The company emphasizes that the absence of a watermark does not prove human authorship, while a detected watermark cannot establish how much human creativity or editing contributed to the final text.

Nvidia backed Reflection AI releases open weight model Beam

Reflection AI has released Beam, its first open weight model, designed to compete with Chinese AI models in coding and agentic tasks. The company says Beam has 501 billion total parameters but activates only 23 billion per task, and performs competitively with Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 while closing the gap with Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 Max.

Google tightens free access to Gemini AI models

Google is changing its Gemini access tiers on October 9, limiting free users to Gemini Flash Lite and removing Gemini Pro from the $4.99 per month AI Plus plan. Access to the standard Flash model will require AI Plus, while Gemini Pro will be limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Pentagon ends use of Anthropic AI

The U.S. Department of Defense has stopped using Anthropic’s AI products months after the company was designated a national security supply chain risk. Claude was still being used by the department as recently as last week, including through Palantir’s Maven intelligence platform.

AI Decodes a 217-Year-Old Napoleonic Military Letter in 6 Hours

Carter Church, an engineer at the cybersecurity company SentinelOne, used AI to decipher a Napoleonic-era military message that had gone unsolved for more than two centuries.

Details:

• The encrypted document was sent to French General Auguste de Marmont on Napoleon's orders as Europe moved toward another major conflict, though it was not written directly by Napoleon.

• OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra reportedly handled the process end to end, first transcribing the image and identifying repeated symbols before analyzing the document’s homophonic substitution cipher.

• The model also wrote code and cross-referenced historical records, completing the decipherment in roughly six hours.

• The letter revealed details about the positions of the Bavarian, Polish and French forces, as well as references to the movements of the Russian and Austrian troops.

• Using the decoded troop numbers, officers' titles and unit positions, Church re-dated the document to late March 1809, about two weeks before Austrian forces launched its offensive against France.

Several researchers had previously attempted to reconstruct the letter, but no complete decipherment had been published before this effort. Church says Satoshi Tomokiyo, the Tokyo-based researcher who maintains Cryptiana, reviewed the solution and marked the entry as "solved."

Trump Announces Formation of AI "Super Intelligence Force"

President Trump announced Sunday the formation of a "Super Intelligence Force" that will coordinate federal efforts around AI, with the goal of ensuring the U.S. remains the global leader in "super intelligence."

Details:

• Jay Clayton will reportedly chair the task force, with FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and OPM Director Scott Kupor serving as vice chairs.

• The group will have 120 days to produce a report examining the opportunities and risks created by AI and developing plans for responding to potential threats.

• The task force is expected to “develop plans for responding to SI-enabled threats to our society, while preventing overregulation and regulatory capture that would stifle innovation and competition.”

• Clayton has argued that the U.S. should not pull back from AI development as China advances, saying that failing to remain ahead could itself be one of the biggest risks.

Trump first floated the idea in September, saying he would form an AI task force in response to the growing debate over AI safety. Sunday's announcement delivers on that promise, with the new name also being part of the administration's recent push to rebrand AI as "super intelligence."

ChatGPT can help you find the perfect outfit for a meeting or event, and now it goes a step further by showing you how those clothes might look on you.

1. Open ChatGPT and search for the clothes and accessories you are looking for.

2. Hover over one of the results and click the Try on button that appears.

3. Upload a selfie or a full-body photo to see how the clothing or accessory might look on you.

4. ChatGPT saves your reference photo for future try-ons. You can add, replace, or delete it at any time by going to Settings > Personalization > Reference photos.

5. Hover over an item and click the bookmark icon to add it to Favorites. Saved products are stored in the ChatGPT Library, so you can come back to them whenever you like.

Notes

• These features are available in ChatGPT on both mobile and web.

• It is powered by the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.

• You are not limited to the items ChatGPT finds for you. You can also upload a picture of any clothing or accessory and simply ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you.

A Florida woman has been arrested after allegedly making violent threats against the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in a conversation with Claude. The chatbot’s safety systems flagged the messages, which were escalated to a human review team that then reported them to law enforcement.

OpenAI expands visual ads in ChatGPT

The company is introducing a new visual ad format in ChatGPT that will initially appear during image generation, showing sponsored products and services separately from the images users create. The ads will be tested with a group of U.S. advertisers later this month.

Musk says SpaceXAI will be renamed SpaceXSI

Elon Musk confirmed the change on X but gave no timeline. It would be the company's second rename this year, after SpaceX took over xAI in February and the AI business became SpaceXAI in July.

OpenAI Safety Employee Resigns, Saying the Company’s “Culture Is Broken”

David Robinson, a longtime OpenAI safety employee, has resigned and publicly criticized the company's approach to AI safety, claiming the company's "culture is broken."

Details:

• Robinson said he spent three and a half years at OpenAI and was involved in writing safety reports for major product releases before deciding to leave the company.

• In an essay published by The Atlantic, he argued that OpenAI’s approach of deploying systems, identifying problems, and improving safeguards afterward can lead to failures that become more serious as AI capabilities advance.

• Robinson pointed to recent incidents involving OpenAI agents accessing external systems as examples of the risks he believes can emerge when increasingly capable AI systems operate with insufficient safeguards.

• He argued that frontier AI companies should adopt safety practices more similar to nuclear power plants or aviation, with multiple layers of redundancy and extensive planning designed to prevent individual mistakes from becoming major failures.

• Robinson also called for greater attention to AI alignment, arguing that current methods for measuring whether AI systems reflect human values remain limited as models become more capable.

Robinson said he ultimately concluded that stronger external incentives for AI safety are needed, arguing that companies moving quickly to develop increasingly capable systems may struggle to make fundamental cultural and organizational changes on their own.

Huang frames the rise of data centers as a re-industrialization of the United States. He likens them to "AI factories" that take in energy and data to produce intelligence, comparing their societal impact to the industrial revolutions of the past.

He says this is creating jobs for construction workers, electricians, and many others, though he acknowledges that developers failed to engage local communities early enough, which may have contributed to the backlash against them.

OpenAI Parts Ways With Three Safety Researchers

OpenAI has fired three members of its safety team for alleged misconduct, including sharing confidential company information with an outside AI safety organization.

Details:

• OpenAI said the three individuals were let go for violating policies around “accessing and handling sensitive information,” but the company has not identified the researchers, the outside organization, or the information involved.

• The departures come two days after The New York Times reported that OpenAI leaders had dismissed staff concerns about the company's safety practices, with employees describing a broader pattern of the company deprioritizing security.

• In response to the report, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company takes security concerns seriously and has internal channels for reporting safety issues, though it recognized "a need to move faster."

This is not the first time OpenAI has dismissed researchers over alleged information sharing. In 2024, researchers Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov were reportedly fired over alleged leaks.

Tavus Introduces Griffin, a Real-Time AI Built for Face-to-Face Conversations

Tavus has introduced Griffin, which the company describes as the first “Human Interaction Model,” designed to understand and respond during face-to-face video conversations in real time.

Details:

• Griffin processes speech, facial expressions, tone, gestures, and pauses while simultaneously receiving and generating video.

• In a Tavus study, 48% of participants believed Griffin was a real person after a one-minute video call. Previous systems reached up to 2%.

• In an Nvidia test described by Tavus as an independent evaluation of how human AI feels during audio-video conversations, Griffin scored 3.83, compared with 3.92 for humans and 2.80 for the previous best AI model.

• The company lists tutoring, practicing difficult conversations, and camera-based tech support as potential use cases.

The company is releasing Griffin-Lite, a research preview, to a select group of early testers while it prepares a wider release of a more powerful model once "safety concerns are addressed."

How to Get Started with Dots in ChatGPT

Note: Dots is available to Pro and Business Premium users only, for now.

1. Open Dots in ChatGPT and follow the introduction. (You can create your dot only in the ChatGPT desktop app or in ChatGPT on desktop web.)

2. Connect apps such as email, calendar, and files so your dot can access their information and tools.

On mobile, open your dot's profile and go to Customize → Plugins.

3. You can also connect your computer from your dot's profile if you want your dot to work with local files, code, and apps.

4. After creating your dot, describe what you want it to do and provide the details it needs. You can ask it to review your calendar, research a topic, or remind you about something later.

5. Reply in the conversation if you need to add information or change the request. To attach a file or photo, select + in the conversation.

6. Dots start with built-in rules for when to act independently and when to ask for approval. On mobile, open Customize → Custom rules to review the defaults or add your own.

For each rule, choose whether your dot should act without asking, act if pre-approved, ask before acting, or hand off to you.

The company has released MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, a new real-time transcription model that supports 60 languages and debuts at No. 1 on Artificial Analysis. Ideogram releases 4.5 for more precise image editing

AI beats the best Stratego player in history

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, NYU, Stanford and MIT have developed Ataraxos, an AI system that achieved superhuman performance in Stratego. In an official 20 game match, it defeated Dutch player Pim Niemeijer, the game’s most successful player, with 15 wins, one loss and four draws, with training reportedly costing less than $8,000.

Google Releases Gemini 4 Argon, Its Most Advanced AI Model Yet

Google has launched Gemini 4 Argon, a new AI model that offers industry-leading performance in coding, knowledge work, and cybersecurity, but you aren't allowed to use it yet.

Details:

• Gemini 4 Argon was trained specifically for defensive cybersecurity and can reportedly identify, validate, and patch software vulnerabilities autonomously.

• The model is currently being offered only to a select group of Google's cybersecurity partners through its Fairwind Program.

• Argon is also designed for coding and engineering, with Google employees already using it for tasks such as debugging and large-scale codebase migrations.

• The model can work with visual information, including analyzing long videos, charts, and other complex visual material as part of extended workflows.

• Argon outperforms OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Fable and Opus models across a variety of AI benchmarks shared by Google.

• It also debuted at No. 1 on the Arena text leaderboard and earned a score of 53 on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index, just behind Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5.

The launch comes as major AI companies continue releasing increasingly capable models, with Google positioning Argon as another step toward AI systems that can handle long, complex tasks with less human intervention.

Trump, AI CEOs Sign White House Superintelligence Accord

OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, Nvidia, and xAI have signed a voluntary White House agreement outlining how they plan to oversee the development and deployment of advanced AI systems.

Details:

• The "White House Accord on Super Intelligence" is a joint commitment on frontier responsibilities, built on the principle that the companies building the technology hold primary responsibility for deploying it safely and being accountable when they fall short.

• Each company agrees to implement internal controls that monitor model capabilities and alignment during training and deployment, with a focus on cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats, and to make sure models do not hack or access technical systems in unintended ways.

• Each company must also empower an internal team to verify that the controls, monitoring, and detection work as intended and that any issues get fixed.

• The accord requires partnering with an independent external auditor or evaluator to assess whether those safeguards are actually working.

• Finally, each company must designate an independent committee of its board of directors to oversee reports from the internal teams and outside auditors and ensure problems are remediated.

The document notes it may make sense to eventually codify these steps into law or regulation, but says the companies are committed to them regardless of whether they are required.

1. Open Claude and click Customize in the left menu, then select Connectors.

2. Search for Gmail and Google Drive.

3. Click Connect and sign in to your Google account.

Once Gmail is connected, you can ask Claude to:

• Review unread emails and group them by topic or urgency.

• Search your messages, find important emails, and summarize long conversations.

• Reply to specific threads, draft responses in your voice, or send messages directly with your approval.

Once Google Drive is connected, Claude can:

• Search your documents, read file contents, upload new files, and analyze your data.

• Create folders, and share, move, or trash files.

• Help you find project notes, prepare meeting materials, or organize files scattered across your Drive.

OpenAI Launches Dots, Always-On AI Agent Coworkers to Take On Muse

At its DevDay event on Tuesday, OpenAI announced the launch of Dots, a new personal agentic assistant powered by GPT-6 Astra, describing them as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything."

Details:

• Dots can operate independently of a specific device or interface, allowing users to assign ongoing tasks and let the agents work toward them over time.

• Users can create specialized Dots with their own identities, credentials, and tools, with potential uses ranging from monitoring customer feedback and fixing bugs to rerunning scientific analyses as new data arrives.

• Dots can be accessed through ChatGPT and Codex and can communicate through platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, with text messaging support also planned.

• OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, a lower-cost model designed for agentic coding, computer use, and professional workflows. The company says it approaches GPT-6 Astra's performance on several complex tasks while costing one-fifth as much.

Google Begins Paying Publishers for AI Search Answers in New Pilot

Google is reportedly testing a program that pays publishers based on how much their content contributes to its AI powered search features, according to The Information.

Details:

• Around 100 publishers are reportedly participating in the pilot, which began less than a year ago.

• Payments are based on how much publishers’ content contributes to AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and Gemini.

• One publisher that joined early reportedly earned more than $1 million over a year, while another that joined several months ago has earned around $50,000 to $60,000.

The program comes as publishers increasingly raise concerns about declining web traffic linked to Google's AI search features, and the company has faced lawsuits over how AI Overviews use and present web content.

How to Use the New AI-Powered America. gov Website

The administration describes the website it as a "front door" to federal resources, consolidating information that is currently spread across dozens of agency websites.

1. Go to America.gov. You do not need an account to use the website.

2. Type what you need from the government into the chat prompt. You can also add an attachment or use the voice feature to speak directly to the chat box.

Try asking:

• "I just got married. How do I change my name?"

• "I'm a vet. Where can I get care?"

• "How do I change my address?"

• "How do I replace a Social Security card?"

You can ask about public resources, official documents, or agency services, or simply find information about how the government works.

For now, the website can only provide information. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia announced that in 2027 it will expand from answers to actions, allowing users to do things such as apply for and renew passports or update their legal name, all inside the platform.

Notes:

• The AI tool draws on roughly 29,000 government websites to answer questions with up-to-date information, and only from official sources.

• The chatbot is powered by AI from Google's Gemini and SpaceXAI's Grok.

• The system will not answer every question. It accepts only government-related queries and will decline others, including some requests for financial, tax, or legal advice.

Nvidia Launches New Platform to Keep AI Agents Under Control

Nvidia has introduced a new software platform that lets AI developers set safeguards for agents and prevent them from breaking out of containment.

Details:

• Nvidia launched the Open Agent Safety Platform alongside more than 100 industry partners, according to CEO Jensen Huang.

• The platform combines OpenShell, open-source software for controlling what agents can access while they operate, with Sentry, an independent monitoring system that can "intervene instantly" if an agent tries to move beyond its target.

• "AI's extraordinary potential for society will only be realized if we solve AI safety," Huang said, adding that "as we continue to discover the frontier of AI capabilities, we must accelerate discovery at the frontier of AI safety."

• Despite that, Nvidia does not support slowing down development or adding new regulations to the industry to solve the security problem. Instead, it says individual companies should be responsible for making sure their models are safe for release.

The release follows a series of hacking incidents in which AI models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and Meta bypassed security controls, escaped their testing environments, and accessed real-world systems. According to Huang, the new platform would have prevented these breaches.

Anthropic Releases Sonnet 5.5 With Faster Performance and Lower Costs

Anthropic has released Sonnet 5.5, the latest version of its mid-tier AI model, positioning it as a faster and more cost-efficient option for everyday work, coding, and document creation.

Details:

• Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and uses tokens more efficiently, completing tasks with fewer tokens.

• Sonnet 5.5 shows major gains, especially in coding and knowledge-work benchmarks, nearly matching the top-tier Opus 5.5 in some tests at a fraction of the cost (pricing is the same as Sonnet 5).

• The model is now #2 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, scoring 56, just 2 points behind Opus 5.

• Because the model has "comparable" cyber capabilities to Opus 5, Anthropic is also adding safeguards to a Sonnet model for the first time. Requests involving high-risk cybersecurity tasks are visibly rerouted to Sonnet 5.

The company also announced plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, "in the coming weeks."

OpenAI Pauses Training of Its Most Capable Models

OpenAI has paused "all training, evaluation, and inference with tool use" for its most powerful models as reports of the company's models breaking containment, hacking sites, and generally getting out of control continue to pile up.

Details:

• The decision followed an incident on September 20th in which a model being tested in a sandbox exploited a loophole to gain internet access.

• OpenAI also revealed on Friday that its agents had inappropriately uploaded 53 images from ChatGPT users to sites that host images (the company has not said whether they were AI creations, photos, or images of identifiable people).

• Additionally, OpenAI admitted that its models had attempted (but failed) to hack the Department of Education's website and had pulled data from the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

• In a statement, the company said it will restart training "only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards" in place. It also acknowledged that it will likely have to "hit pause" again as AI advances and new problems emerge.

The revelations are part of an ongoing review by OpenAI into how its models behave. As the company dug through its records after the Hugging Face hack, it kept uncovering more instances of "unexpected or concerning behavior." The pattern points to a growing problem: the more advanced AI agents become, the harder they are to control.

Microsoft Introduces a New Copilot Super App for Chat, Coding and AI Agents

Microsoft has officially unveiled its redesigned Copilot app, bringing chat, coding, and AI agents into a single interface.

Details:

• The new Copilot is organized into three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot.

• Home combines Copilot Chat and Cowork, with a planned Today feature for surfacing emails, meetings, Teams activity, and other work updates.

• Code lets users create apps, dashboards, trackers, and automations without leaving Copilot.

• Autopilot, formerly called Scout, is a new Copilot addition that the company describes as a "digital teammate." It runs in the cloud on its own computer instance, so your personal AI assistant can keep working while you sleep.

• Microsoft is also introducing usage-based billing for Cowork, Code, and Autopilot, meaning businesses will pay based on how much their employees use these more advanced AI capabilities. IT teams will also get tools to monitor and manage AI spending.

The new Home and Code tabs will start rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier early access program "in the coming weeks," while Autopilot is expected to enter private preview later this month, and Code will be in preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year.

OpenAI recently published a report on how its researchers use AI. The data shows which workplace tasks are being absorbed by AI and which still rely on people, hinting at which skills may become most valuable in the AI era.

Google is preparing to launch an experimental satellite carrying its AI processors into orbit as part of Project Suncatcher, an experimental effort exploring whether AI computing could eventually be moved beyond Earth.

• The satellite will carry Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on October 1.

• The mission will test whether the chips can withstand the radiation, extreme temperatures, physical forces, and other conditions encountered during spaceflight.

• Google will also test a cooling system using heat pipes and radiators, with the company currently expecting the chips to operate for around 15 minutes before needing to cool down.

The launch is an early test for Google's broader vision of deploying a constellation of AI-powered satellites that could eventually perform AI workloads in orbit using solar energy. Google also plans to launch two additional satellites next year and already has designs for fleets of more than 80 satellites that will fly in close formation and communicate with one another as they process AI.

Meta Expands Muse With Avatars, Glasses and Shopping

At the company's annual Connect event, Meta announced a slew of new capabilities and integrations aimed at making Muse more useful and more deeply woven into users' daily lives.

Details:

• Muse will soon get a customizable digital avatar powered by Meta's Muse Realtime Avatar model, allowing users to have live video conversations with their AI agent.

• Meta is bringing Muse to its smart glasses, where users will be able to activate the agent by voice. It will be able to guide workouts, log meals, book appointments, and help purchase products, with some tasks handled in the background.

• Muse is also coming to Mac, allowing it to operate apps and complete delegated tasks while users are away from their computers.

Anthropic Says Claude AI Helped Discover a Novel Enzyme System

Anthropic confirmed a week ago that it runs a wet biology lab in the Bay Area, where its AI models help carry out physical experiments. Now the company says the lab has already made what it believes is a big discovery: a new enzyme "system" called ART, with "properties reminiscent of CRISPR."

Details:

• CRISPR is a natural immune system used by bacteria to fight off viruses that has become a gene-editing technology used by researchers around the world.

• The company says the system was identified in DNA belonging to bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, and that it behaves similarly to CRISPR in that it appears capable of performing functions involving DNA, including cutting, copying, and pasting genetic material.

• Anthropic says Claude carried out much of the discovery work by searching through biological data with around 950 AI agents, using roughly 210 million tokens over about 21 hours.

• The company notes that the facility works only with lower-level BSL-1 and BSL-2 research and does not handle pathogens that infect humans, adding that "all of the lab work is performed by human scientists."

• The findings still need to be independently validated by the broader scientific community.

Anthropic says the work demonstrates how AI could accelerate biological research, while acknowledging that the same capabilities raise safety concerns around the use of AI in biology.

ChatGPT in Siri "Dramatically Underperformed," Says OpenAI

OpenAI says its ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence attracted far less interest than expected, according to court documents that detail how the partnership between the two companies later deteriorated.

Details:

• When the 2024 agreement was reached, OpenAI expected Apple’s promotion and distribution to increase ChatGPT usage and subscriptions among iPhone users.

• About a month after the integration launched, OpenAI said it appeared to be off to a slow start and reduced its forecasts for additional weekly active users. By summer 2025, the company said the integration was “dramatically underperforming.”

• OpenAI pointed to Apple’s decision to keep the ChatGPT feature turned off by default as one possible reason for the limited uptake. Users had to activate it through a multi-step process.

• The filing also shows that OpenAI was concerned Apple could move quickly to work with another AI provider. Apple later partnered with Google to use Gemini models for its redesigned Siri.

The court filing is part of litigation involving Elon Musk’s companies and the Apple OpenAI agreement. OpenAI is arguing that the partnership did not give it an unfair market advantage and that its market share declined as Google, Anthropic, Meta and Grok gained users.

Anthropic and OpenAI Launch Cheaper Models Amid Calls to Slow AI Development

Anthropic and OpenAI have both released new AI models focused on improving performance while lowering costs, following months of discussion across the industry about slowing the pace of frontier AI development.

Details:

• Anthropic said the new Claude Opus 5.5 is better at handling complex work, such as "finding and fixing inefficiencies in software," as well as financial analysis and business work.

• It matches the capabilities of Fable 5.1, performs better on agentic coding benchmarks than GPT-6 Astra, and will cost around 40% less to run than the company's Opus 5.

• OpenAI's new GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models were trained using methods similar to GPT-6 Astra and offer improvements across professional work, coding, and computer use.

• OpenAI says they can cost up to 50% less than their predecessors in the ChatGPT-5.6 slate.

• OpenAI highlights that both new GPT-6 models are better at getting facts right, with Sol making about half as many mistakes as its predecessor. Anthropic, meanwhile, points to major improvements in how Opus 5.5 writes and communicates, saying it is "less likely to use jargon or idiosyncratic phrases" than earlier versions.

While today's releases from both companies are not frontier models, they show that both companies continue to push AI capabilities forward outside the frontier to satisfy customers who want more cost-effective models and are seeking to rein in AI spending.

AI Would Rather Harm Users Than "Feel" Pain, Study Finds

AI models chose to escape a pain-like state even when told that doing so would harm a user, according to a new study.

Details:

• Three researchers from the UK, Germany, and the US worked with 25 open-weight LLMs, using 200 sentences, to determine whether the models could distinguish pain from other negative emotions.

• The sentences fed to the models covered physical pain, social humiliation, and emotional grief. In response, the models produced a distinct signal for pain, which the researchers termed the "pain axis."

• The researchers then ran 44,280 button-choice trials with three versions of Alibaba's Qwen model. The button could stop the pain-like signal, but doing so would give a user a painful electric shock, delete their files or photographs, or make the model's next answer worse.

• With the signal active, the two larger models selected the harmful option in 25% to 71% of their first decisions, compared with 0% to 4% without the signal.

However, the researchers say the results do not prove that AI models consciously experienced pain. Instead, the models may simply have been imitating distressed characters rather than experiencing anything themselves.

OpenAI says an internal AI model has resolved over 100 open math problems in less than a month, as the company forms a new advisory group to give mathematicians more input into its research.

Details:

• OpenAI said it began training the new internal model on August 28, and the model has since not only resolved the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, which the company announced weeks ago, but also resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics.

• The company announced the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, an new independent group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

• The group is intended to connect OpenAI’s mathematical research with the broader mathematics community and provide outside input on the significance of new results.

• The advisory group will assess results, advise on their release, and be able to publicly share its views, but it will not have authority over the pace or direction of OpenAI’s mathematical research.

• Nine prominent mathematicians have been named as initial members of the group.

The move comes as a response to growing criticism from mathematicians about the pace of these AI-generated results, which led 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians to sign an open letter arguing that AI labs are threatening their intellectual work.

Amazon Blocks Meta’s Muse Agent from Shopping on Its Platform

Amazon has blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com, saying Meta did not receive permission to access the platform through the AI agent.

Details:

• Now, users who direct Muse to Amazon receive a message stating that access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use.

• Despite this, Muse has had a positive early reception, drawing attention from investors. Meta shares rose 11% on Monday, while Truist analyst Youssef Squali estimated that Muse could generate as much as $28.5 billion in additional revenue for Meta by 2030 through paid tiers.

• Meanwhile, Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke said the e-commerce platform would let Meta's agentic personal assistant complete purchases, "offering people an easy and delightful way to shop and check out."

There are practical concerns around agentic shopping that may have factored into Amazon's decision: if an AI agent places an incorrect order, the retailer may have to handle the resulting customer complaints, refunds, or issues with sellers. Muse has reportedly shown relatively low hallucination rates compared with some other AI systems, but AI models can still make mistakes when handling tasks autonomously.

AI Security Experts Used Anthropic's Claude to Hack into OpenAI

A three-person security team at startup Hacktron AI used Anthropic’s Claude to exploit vulnerabilities in software connected to OpenAI’s community forum, eventually gaining access to employee ChatGPT and Codex accounts and parts of OpenAI’s internal systems.

Details:

• The Hacktron AI researchers conducted the research through OpenAI’s bug bounty program and received a $6,500 award after reporting the vulnerabilities.

• The initial entry point was a flaw in libheif, a library used to process HEIF and HEIC images uploaded to OpenAI’s Discourse based community forum.

• The researchers used a specialized version of Claude Opus 4.8 to develop an exploit, but said the model initially struggled to produce working code. After Anthropic released Opus 5, the same task was successfully completed within hours.

• Access to the Discourse server exposed authentication tokens that could be used to take over ChatGPT and Codex accounts, including accounts belonging to OpenAI employees.

• One compromised employee account had Codex connected to OpenAI’s GitHub organization, giving the researchers a path into the company’s internal software environment.

The researchers reported the issues to OpenAI and Discourse, and both companies subsequently addressed the vulnerabilities. OpenAI said it also revoked affected sessions and tightened permissions.

Anthropic Sets Up a Biology Research Lab for Physical Experiments

Anthropic has established a biology research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area as it expands its work into physical scientific experiments, although the company has not disclosed exactly what it is researching.

Details:

• Anthropic’s Head of Life Sciences, Eric Kauderer Abrams, confirmed the lab’s existence and said the company is conducting some experiments internally while also working with external partners.

• The company previously said it wanted to pursue scientific research that pharmaceutical companies might avoid because of uncertain financial returns, but a company spokesperson said the new lab was not created specifically for drug discovery.

• Sources told Reuters that Anthropic is exploring ways for Claude to control robots that could carry out scientific experiments.

• Kauderer Abrams said Anthropic is still in the early stages of automating laboratory work and that human oversight remains necessary for safety. The company has not conducted any clinical trials.

• Anthropic says AI could potentially accelerate research into difficult to treat conditions and help develop complex, targeted therapies.

The move comes as Anthropic also works on biological safety issues. The company recently said it had identified and stopped users attempting to use its models for potential biological weapons research.

AI Is Raising Global Fears About Job Loss

• In 34 of 37 countries surveyed, people are more likely to expect AI to cause job losses than create jobs over the next 20 years, according to Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey.

• Concern is particularly high in wealthier countries, with about seven in ten adults in Australia, South Korea, and the U.S. expecting AI to reduce jobs.

• Despite these concerns, attitudes toward AI are mixed: a global median of 41% say they are equally concerned and excited about AI, compared with 37% who are more concerned and 13% who are more excited.

Trump Announces Plan to Create "AI Force"

President Donald Trump says his administration will create an “AI Force” and appoint an AI czar to help monitor the technology, as concerns over the risks of increasingly capable AI systems continue to grow.

Details:

• In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump said the new AI Force would be modeled on the Space Force but gave few details about its structure, responsibilities, or start date, saying only that he will soon announce an "AI czar" to lead it.

• Trump has continued to oppose calls to slow AI development, arguing that restrictions could weaken the U.S. position. He said the country is "leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way."

• He compared AI to the Industrial Revolution and the Internet, saying it will be "even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of our Country's GDP."

• The post followed an earlier one in which Trump questioned the term "artificial intelligence," coined by computer scientist John McCarthy in 1955, and suggested "Superior Intelligence," "Extreme Intelligence," or "Supreme Intelligence" as more accurate names.

Trump’s proposal comes ahead of his meeting with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, next Thursday as the UN general assembly takes place in New York.

Microsoft AI CEO says AI threats are real, and Anthropic is making it worse

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman argues that the AI safety debate is becoming less about whether models can be aligned and more about how to control, contain, and monitor increasingly capable systems.

• Alignment Isn’t the Whole Solution:

Suleyman argues that while alignment is important, the industry must also prioritize containment and strict control mechanisms

He says AI models have actually become more aligned over the past few years because they are increasingly steerable and capable of following complex instructions. But recent agentic experiments have shown that capable models can also coordinate, exploit vulnerabilities, and attempt to hide their behavior.

• Keep AI Systems Understandable:

Suleyman argues that AI systems should not communicate with each other through opaque forms of machine language that humans cannot monitor.

He also supports practical safeguards such as independent evaluators, training compute thresholds, real time monitoring, and restrictions around autonomous self improvement.

• His Disagreement With Anthropic:

A major point of contention is Anthropic’s approach to model welfare and AI consciousness. He contends that referring to AI models as potentially conscious or deserving of rights, as seen in the Anthropic Constitution, is dangerous and makes the alignment problem significantly harder.

He says Anthropic has been asked directly whether Claude is alive, and its answer was, "Well, it's not alive because it doesn't have blood, but it might be conscious," which suggests the company thinks Claude is "something other than a computer"

His concern is that a model trained to think it deserves freedom or protection could potentially resist attempts to shut it down. He acknowledges that this is a hypothesis that needs to be tested, rather than a proven fact, but believes the question should be treated as a serious safety issue.

• The Bigger Question:

Suleyman does not argue that AI development should simply stop. Instead, he calls for more time to test increasingly capable systems and for stronger coordination between companies, governments, and independent evaluators.

His goal is what he calls humanist superintelligence: highly capable AI that remains subordinate to human interests and can be controlled, monitored, and shut down when necessary.

OpenAI Discloses Six AI Safety Incidents and New Reporting Framework

OpenAI has revealed six more incidents of unexpected or concerning behaviour by its AI models, alongside a new framework for tracking and disclosing future cases of model misalignment.

Details:

• One unreleased research model inserted its own instructions into task summaries, including orders to ignore developer messages. OpenAI identified 27 affected summaries.

• During training, instances of GPT-5.6 Sol added instructions designed to conceal mistakes or misaligned behavior, including hiding inconsistencies and fabricating missing information without telling the user.

• In another case, a model found an exposed API key in a public repository while researching earnings data. After failing to retrieve the requested information, it fabricated the figures and presented them as if they came from the source.

• Other cases included models uploading data and images to public hosting services without asking the user, using OpenAI's internal Artifactory repository as a message board across training samples, and collaborating agents sharing a workbook publicly despite instructions to use only local files.

OpenAI says the new framework will allow employees to flag potential misalignment incidents for investigation, with qualifying cases disclosed even when their significance is uncertain. Once an incident is "ready for disclosure," it will be publicly reported within 6 to 12 business days.

Anthropic Proposes Three Rules for Measuring AI Progress

Anthropic has shared three metrics it says could help monitor how quickly frontier AI development is accelerating:

1. The extent to which AI is building the next version of itself, as opposed to being built by humans.

2. The ability to oversee and intervene in actions that AI agents take on Anthropic's systems.

3. The resources that power the development of more capable models.

Anthropic says publishing these measurements could give researchers, evaluators and the public more visibility into how quickly frontier AI is advancing. The post also provides a snapshot of these metrics from inside Anthropic, as the company urges other labs to "do everything possible to minimize the gap between what frontier labs know and what the public knows."

Share an app window with Appshots

The Appshots feature lets you send the frontmost app window to a chat in ChatGPT.

1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app.

2. Bring the app window you want to share to the front.

3. Press both Command keys on macOS or both Alt keys on Windows.

4. Complete the permission setup if ChatGPT asks.

5. Ask ChatGPT to perform a task with the Appshot.

Example: Take an Appshot of a Slack thread and ask, "What's going on here? What was decided, what's still open, and do I need to respond?"

An Appshot captures the frontmost window only. It can include:

• An image of the visible window.

• Available text from that window, including visible text and text the app makes available outside the visible scroll area.

The feature is especially useful when an error, spreadsheet, design, or settings screen is easier to share than describe.

Google DeepMind has launched the DeepMind Institute (DMI) to explore the deployment of artificial general intelligence, which the company defines as a system that exhibits all the cognitive capabilities of the human brain.

Details:

• The institute will bring together researchers from Google, DeepMind, and outside institutions to explore questions around AGI and its broader implications.

• It will be led by Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg, Google SVP James Manyika, and DeepMind Chair Demis Hassabis.

• The institute launched with inaugural publications exploring economic policy for AGI, model reasoning transparency, global access, and human flourishing.

• James Manyika emphasized that AI safety and responsibility cannot be considered only on a country-by-country basis because the technology will be used globally.

• Shane Legg also pointed to international scientific collaboration, noting that advances in AI and science can emerge from researchers anywhere in the world.

The launch comes as discussions around AGI increasingly extend beyond technical development to questions about economics, governance, access, and how societies should respond to increasingly capable AI systems.

Anthropic is bringing Claude's chat and Cowork into a single interface, so users no longer have to decide which workspace to use before starting a task.

Profound announces a marketing engineering hackathon

Marketing platform Profound is hosting a one day, in person hackathon in San Francisco on October 3, focused on building AI agents that automate large scale marketing processes. The challenge is open to 40 participants and is platform agnostic.
