DeepSeek has changed how AI is built, matching or beating performances with the infamous ChatGPT, for far cheaper. News came out as soon as a $500 billion investment was announced with OpenAI, but DeepSeek only cost $6 million for training.

How ?

What makes DeepSeek different is how it trains its models. Unlike others that need expensive human feedback, DeepSeek uses automated methods to refine its AI, making it faster and cheaper.

• ‘Half their innovation comes from straight engineering’: instead of NVIDIA’s industry-standard (CUDA), DeepSeek built their own ultra-optimised, machine-level code with assembler. “That’s as hardcore as it gets in optimizing these things.”

• It also uses smart tricks like predicting multiple words at once, which makes the process more efficient and accurate.

• The cumulative cost to reach DeepSeek was far above $6 million. Still, in comparison, OpenAI’s competing model took around $100 million (Wired).

This approach is setting new standards in AI development, and other companies will likely follow suit to keep up.

• They increased to distance-7 with a grid of 101 physical qubits: 49 data, 48 measure, and 4 leakage removal qubits.

The Results: Faster, More Precise Error Correction

• Logical error rates decreased by 2.14x

• Logical qubits doubled its lifespan compared to their best physical qubit.

This is the first time a quantum processor has definitively shown below-threshold performance, showing that their logical qubit corrects errors faster than accumulates.

The Problem

Pinterest’s legacy ad-serving system, Mohawk, managing over $3B in revenue, was complex with 70+ backends, 380K+ lines of code, and 200+ experiments. Its unsafe multi-threading and poor modularization led to frequent outages and slow innovation.

The Solution

A complete rewrite instead of a major refactor, focusing on extensibility, modularity, safety, and development velocity. For this, the Design Decisions needed achieved the following answers to the key questions:

1. How to avoid breaking code across teams?
   Adopting Apex, a graph execution framework that organizes code into Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), to ensure clear modularization and team isolation and prevent cross-team breakages.

2. How to ensure data correctness?
   Each node of Apex is a logically coherent piece of business logic, and data must pass from from upstream to downstream nodes, to ensure consistency and preventing discrepancies in concurrent operations.

The Results

The AdMixer rewrite achieved zero downtime migration, doubled developer satisfaction in a survey (NPS 46 → 90), cut several millions of infrastructure costs, and supported advanced ad innovations with improved scalability.

How Reddit Built a Metadata Store that Handles 100k Reads per Second

The Problem

By 2024, Reddit's monthly active users tripled from 430 million in 2019 to 1.2 billion, straining their  infrastructure.

• They needed a unified system to handle 50 terabytes of data by 2030, while also accommodating lower-frequency write operations with higher latency.

• They had scattered metadata systems,  so managing and accessing crucial metadata—like video thumbnails and image resolutions— was complicated and inefficient.

The Solution

Reddit's engineering team designed a new, scalable system with a few strategies:

• Data Partitioning: Data was migrated to Sharded Postgress and distributed across shards to balance read loads, preventing bottlenecks and enabling seamless scaling.

• Data Denormalization: Metadata fields needed for image posts were combined into a single JSONB field. This streamlined reads by reducing complex queries.

The Results

The new system successfully handled 100,000 reads per second with sub-50 ms latency, supporting Reddit's growth and ensuring future scalability.
