This week's episode dropped on MLK Day, and I wanted to take some time to reflect on Dr. King's "mountaintop speech"—the one he gave in Memphis the night before he was killed.

The question that stays with me: "What will happen to them if I do not stop to help?"

That question doesn't stop mattering just because Monday's over. It matters here in Northwest Arkansas every single day. Over 400+ episodes, I've talked with people who've answered it in their own ways:

Nathan Bogart guides immigrants through impossible legal systems. Mike Thompson and Lynn Wong created Pedal Park so everyone has a place to belong. Canopy NWA helps refugees build new lives here. Peter Norman gives free legal help to rural entrepreneurs who can't afford it. Shawn Schwartzman at Potter's House builds relationships across every divide you can imagine.

None of them is perfect. Neither am I. But they showed up.

So here's what I'm asking: Who needs you to show up? Maybe it's a neighbor. Maybe it's someone at work who's struggling. Maybe it's just listening better to the person right in front of you.

Building beloved community isn't a slogan. It's a choice we make every day, right here in Northwest Arkansas.

Episode 341—dropping today—is our last guest episode of 2025. Next week, we're bringing you something special to close out the year and get ready for what's coming in 2026. But first, let me tell you about this conversation, because it honestly left me thinking for days.

Turning Grief Into Beauty: Monica Moore and the COVID Hearts Project

I sat down with Fayetteville artist Monica Moore to talk about her COVID Hearts Project—a public memorial made of thousands of paper hearts honoring the more than 13,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in Arkansas.

What started as Monica's personal way of processing grief turned into something much bigger. Volunteers from across the region stepped up—one person alone cut 2,000 hearts. Organizations like Lifestyles, Inc. got involved, giving people with developmental disabilities a chance to create their own pandemic art. The project became a movement.

Monica told me something that stuck: "The lives that were lost were beautiful lives. I want to honor the beauty that we lost. For sure, we can do that through the beauty of art."

This isn't just about remembering statistics. It's about remembering people. And it's about how art—especially community-driven art—can help us heal, connect, and process things we might still be carrying around.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

While everyone else is handing out candy today, I'm serving up something with way more kick — a story about two people who got knocked down and came back swinging with hot sauce.

Here's what happened:

Randy and Shauna Pulayya met at JFK airport. (I know, sounds like a rom-com, right?) Fast forward through 20 years, 60 countries, and one treasured family recipe, and they're now the powerhouse couple behind West Indian Peppa Sauce.

But here's the gut-punch: Last year, they both got laid off from their corporate jobs.

Most people would panic. They pivoted.

The Secret Sauce (Literally)

For two decades, Randy's great-grandma's Guyanese pepper sauce recipe was their family's best-kept secret. You know that recipe in your family that everyone asks you to bring to every gathering? That was theirs.

When I first tried their sauce, I immediately thought of my own family gatherings and those dishes that just hit different because they carry generations of love and tradition. That's what Randy and Shauna bottled up — his Guyanese heritage meets her Vietnamese culinary sensibility.

Now it's on shelves from Florida to right here at Ozark Natural Foods. (Side note: If you haven't grabbed a bottle yet, what are you waiting for?)

The NWA Connection That Makes Me Proud

Even though they're based in Orlando now, Shauna's roots run deep in Van Buren and NWA. They got their start at the Arkansas Food Innovation Center (AFIC) — and I have to give a massive shoutout to Daymara Baker and her amazing team who are making food entrepreneurship dreams a reality on a regular basis.

Every time I interview founders who leveraged AFIC, I'm reminded why I love telling these stories. We've got the infrastructure and the people to turn kitchen-table dreams into nationwide brands. Daymara and her crew don't just open doors — they help you build the entire house.

Hey Northwest Arkansas family!

Here's a little behind-the-scenes confession: Well before I became your podcast host, I was running around the ABC News Washington Bureau as a production assistant for Nightline and World News Tonight. Yep, that meant plenty of trips down the street to cover whatever President Bill Clinton had brewing at the White House (and trust me, there was always something brewing! 😉).

Fast-forward to today, and I've been living here in Northwest Arkansas for over a decade. I've driven past the Clinton House Museum hundreds of times—literally hundreds—but somehow never actually stepped inside.

Well, that streak officially ended a few weeks ago, and wow, am I glad it did.

This Week's Episode: A Home for Everyone's Story

I sat down with Joshua Youngblood (President of the Board) and Bailee King (the museum's director) for what turned into one of my favorite conversations yet. We recorded it live inside the museum itself, with visitors wandering through as we talked—which felt perfect because this place is still so alive and vital!

What Makes This Place Special?

The Clinton House Museum isn't just a presidential pit stop. This gorgeous 1920s Tudor Revival home is where Bill and Hillary Clinton lived, taught at the University of Arkansas, and got married. But here's what really got me: it's become a home for everyone's story.

Right now, you can check out Andrew Kilgore's stunning vintage Fayetteville photography exhibit alongside the beautiful public gardens and a timeline that stretches from the 1920s to today. The stories here go way beyond politics—they're about service, community, and the connections that make Fayetteville special.

Here's the Thing—They Need Us

This is one of Fayetteville's only history museums, and as city funding winds down, they're running on an annual budget of just $59,000. That's half what it used to be, and barely enough to keep the lights on, let alone preserve this living piece of history.

"We're doing a lot with a little," Joshua told me, and honestly, that hit me right in the heart.

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of August! We’ve been going non-stop prepping for Fall projects and adjusting to the start of a new school year. And yes—morning traffic is officially back in full force. Anyone else feeling that pain?

If you follow me on social media, you might’ve seen that I’m getting ready to send my youngest son off to Spain for a Rotary Youth Exchange. He’ll be spending his sophomore year of high school learning Spanish, playing soccer, and soaking up the culture. I’m so excited for him—honestly, I wish I could trade places with him. 😉

On a more personal note, there are some big changes coming up—for the podcast and for me. I’ve committed to finally writing that book this Fall, and I’ll be announcing something special in October that I’m thrilled to be part of. You’ll be getting a personal invite to a unique event soon, so stay tuned!

Sometimes it's good to take a break. While we've been pumping out podcasts every Monday for the past six years, this year we decided to lean into the concept of downtime and a healthy reset.

Usually each summer we share two or three "Best of I Am Northwest Arkansas" podcast episodes, but this year we went all out and gave you five!
