Volunteers from across the region stepped up—one person alone cut 2,000 hearts. Organizations like Lifestyles, Inc. got involved, giving people with developmental disabilities a chance to create their own pandemic art. The project became a movement.

Monica told me something that stuck: "The lives that were lost were beautiful lives. I want to honor the beauty that we lost. For sure, we can do that through the beauty of art."

This isn't just about remembering statistics. It's about remembering people. And it's about how art—especially community-driven art—can help us heal, connect, and process things we might still be carrying around.

Where You Can See It

The COVID Hearts Project is currently on display at Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) in the Shoemaker Center. Upcoming showings are planned at Likewise Community and Coworking Space and the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum. Check out theheartsproject.com for more details.

For the Creatives Out There

Monica's advice? Trust your imagination. Believe in your vision. And don't try to do it alone—lean on your community. Northwest Arkansas is the kind of place where people will show up when you ask.

Thanks for being part of this journey with us. These conversations matter because you're listening, sharing, and showing up for what's happening in this region.

Happy Holidays, and we look forward to seeing you next week for our year-end wrap-up.

Randy Wilburn

Listen to the full episode and check out show notes at https://iamnorthwestarkansas.com/341

Powered by beehiiv

She'd spent years running restaurants and loving food, so she launched Grazing Robin Road. But here's the thing—she didn't do it alone. AFIC gave her the commercial kitchen space and support she needed to actually make it work.

What AFIC Does Daymara walked us through how AFIC helps local food businesses get off the ground. It's not just kitchen space—they connect people with farmers, provide training, and basically remove the barriers that keep good ideas from becoming real businesses.

The Community Piece This is where it gets good. Kristen talks about how the networking and training at AFIC didn't just help her business—it gave her confidence. She's now creating custom catering and working with local producers to keep everything as local as possible.

Savor the Ozarks AFIC hosts these dinner series that showcase regional chefs and food entrepreneurs. Good food, good people, and the proceeds help fund scholarships for folks starting their own food businesses.

Why Listen?

This one's for anyone thinking about starting something, anyone who loves food, or anyone who wants to understand how things actually work in Northwest Arkansas. We're continuing our five-part series (huge thanks to the Walton Family Foundation for making this happen), and this time I sat down with Robin Atkinson, the artist and founder behind Upkept.io.

If you've never heard of Upkept, it's basically a platform that connects you with skilled artisans who can repair or alter your clothes. Simple idea, but it's tackling something huge—did you know 85% of textiles end up in landfills every year? Robin's working to change that, one repair at a time.

What we talked about:

Robin shared how she built Upkept right here in Northwest Arkansas and why she believes we can create a repair revolution in fashion. We got into the challenges of running a mission-driven startup, the skilled tradespeople keeping our garments alive, and why saving your favorite pieces is good for your wallet AND the planet.

We also swapped some stories—I told her about my Gucci loafers that have been going strong for years, and she shared about the "upkept piles" we all have (you know, those clothes you love but haven't gotten around to fixing yet).

If you've got something sitting in your closet that just needs a little love, check out upkept.io. (I know, sounds like a rom-com, right?) Fast forward through 20 years, 60 countries, and one treasured family recipe, and they're now the powerhouse couple behind West Indian Peppa Sauce.

But here's the gut-punch: Last year, they both got laid off from their corporate jobs.

Most people would panic. They pivoted.

The Secret Sauce (Literally)

For two decades, Randy's great-grandma's Guyanese pepper sauce recipe was their family's best-kept secret. You know that recipe in your family that everyone asks you to bring to every gathering? That was theirs.

When I first tried their sauce, I immediately thought of my own family gatherings and those dishes that just hit different because they carry generations of love and tradition. That's what Randy and Shauna bottled up — his Guyanese heritage meets her Vietnamese culinary sensibility.

Now it's on shelves from Florida to right here at Ozark Natural Foods. (Side note: If you haven't grabbed a bottle yet, what are you waiting for?)

The NWA Connection That Makes Me Proud

Even though they're based in Orlando now, Shauna's roots run deep in Van Buren and NWA. They got their start at the Arkansas Food Innovation Center (AFIC) — and I have to give a massive shoutout to Daymara Baker and her amazing team who are making food entrepreneurship dreams a reality on a regular basis.

Every time I interview founders who leveraged AFIC, I'm reminded why I love telling these stories. We've got the infrastructure and the people to turn kitchen-table dreams into nationwide brands. Daymara and her crew don't just open doors — they help you build the entire house.

Why This Episode Hit Different

Look, I've recorded a lot of episodes. But watching Randy and Shauna talk about involving their kids in the business, about turning their multicultural heritage into their superpower (Guyana meets Vietnam — talk about flavor fusion!), about choosing optimism when the corporate world showed them the door — it reminded me why I started this podcast.

Their authenticity is contagious. No polished PR speak. Just real humans building something meaningful, one batch at a time.

Three Things You'll Learn:

How to test your idea — Farmers markets are gold (Randy breaks down exactly how they validated demand)

Why your "weird" background is your advantage — Their Guyanese-Vietnamese fusion perspective? That's their unfair advantage

What to do when life punches you in the face — Spoiler: Make pepper sauce

Your Halloween Challenge

Do one thing today that scares you a little.

Randy and Shauna walked away from corporate security to bet on themselves. You don't have to quit your job (unless you want to), but maybe you send that email, make that call, or finally start that thing you've been thinking about.

And if you need some liquid courage? Well, their sauce pairs great with everything. 😉

Listen here: https://iamnorthwestarkansas.com/333

Support the movement:

Grab a bottle at ShopWIPS.com

Follow their journey: @ShopWIPS on Instagram and LinkedIn

Share this with someone who needs to hear it

🎙️ EXCITING NEWS: We Need Your Vote!

I'm humbled to share that I Am Northwest Arkansas has been nominated for several ARKAST Podcast Awards happening later this month! Raised on a farm in Cape Town, South Africa, he brought a blue-collar work ethic and a love for heavy equipment to the rolling fields of Northwest Arkansas. What started as a side hustle hauling debris with a single trailer has grown into a thriving business powered by grit, teamwork, and forward-thinking technology.

Redefining Blue Collar

At iHawl, being “blue collar” means being bold, innovative, and proud. Stephen talks about what "Blue Collar Rising" means to him and how he’s cultivating a workplace where his team not only feels valued but has a clear path for growth—on the job and in life. The company supports their crews, invests in technology, and fosters a culture where your word means everything.

Game-Changing Technology

Construction delays? Not if Stephen can help it. iHaul’s winning edge comes from blending old-school reliability with next-generation tech. Stephen gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the GPS-guided equipment and planning tools that help their crews do the job right—the first time—saving clients time and money.

Building Community

iHawl isn’t just moving dirt; they're shaping communities and supporting local schools and sports teams. For Stephen, it’s about more than business—it’s about leaving a legacy of growth, opportunity, and pride for the next generation of Northwest Arkansans.

Looking Ahead

With a rapidly growing region and big plans for expansion (hello, Texas!), iHawl is committed to building smart, creating career pathways for young people, and ensuring the Ozarks grow responsibly. Their success is proof that with faith, hard work, and a great team, you can move more than just dirt—you can move an entire industry forward.

Thinking of a Career Move?
Stephen wants you to know there’s a place for you or someone you know at iHawl—whether you’re fresh out of high school, looking for a new direction, or simply want to be part of a team that takes pride in their work and their community. Yep, that meant plenty of trips down the street to cover whatever President Bill Clinton had brewing at the White House (and trust me, there was always something brewing! 😉).

Fast-forward to today, and I've been living here in Northwest Arkansas for over a decade. I've driven past the Clinton House Museum hundreds of times—literally hundreds—but somehow never actually stepped inside.

Well, that streak officially ended a few weeks ago, and wow, am I glad it did.

This Week's Episode: A Home for Everyone's Story

I sat down with Joshua Youngblood (President of the Board) and Bailee King (the museum's director) for what turned into one of my favorite conversations yet. We recorded it live inside the museum itself, with visitors wandering through as we talked—which felt perfect because this place is still so alive and vital!

What Makes This Place Special?

The Clinton House Museum isn't just a presidential pit stop. This gorgeous 1920s Tudor Revival home is where Bill and Hillary Clinton lived, taught at the University of Arkansas, and got married. But here's what really got me: it's become a home for everyone's story.

Right now, you can check out Andrew Kilgore's stunning vintage Fayetteville photography exhibit alongside the beautiful public gardens and a timeline that stretches from the 1920s to today. The stories here go way beyond politics—they're about service, community, and the connections that make Fayetteville special.

Here's the Thing—They Need Us

This is one of Fayetteville's only history museums, and as city funding winds down, they're running on an annual budget of just $59,000. That's half what it used to be, and barely enough to keep the lights on, let alone preserve this living piece of history.

"We're doing a lot with a little," Joshua told me, and honestly, that hit me right in the heart.

Ready to Be Part of the Story?

Visit: Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10am–4pm, completely free!

Support: Whether it's a donation, membership, or just showing up to an event, every bit helps keep those doors open for future generations.

Celebrate: You can actually host your own events here—meetings, classes, even weddings! How cool is that?

Stay Connected: Follow their Instagram and visit clintonhousemuseum.org for updates on exhibits and events.

As Bailee beautifully put it: "Come see what it was like to live in Fayetteville in the '70s and walk in the footsteps of history—no matter what background you come from, everyone's story belongs here."

Your Mission (Should You Choose to Accept It)

If you've ever said, "I really should visit the Clinton House Museum someday," consider this your official nudge from the universe. Come for the history, stay for the inspiration—and help keep this local treasure alive.

And hey, if you do visit, let us know!

Hey Folks,

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of August! We’ve been going non-stop prepping for Fall projects and adjusting to the start of a new school year. And yes—morning traffic is officially back in full force. Anyone else feeling that pain?

If you follow me on social media, you might’ve seen that I’m getting ready to send my youngest son off to Spain for a Rotary Youth Exchange. He’ll be spending his sophomore year of high school learning Spanish, playing soccer, and soaking up the culture. I’m so excited for him—honestly, I wish I could trade places with him. 😉

On a more personal note, there are some big changes coming up—for the podcast and for me. I’ve committed to finally writing that book this Fall, and I’ll be announcing something special in October that I’m thrilled to be part of. You’ll be getting a personal invite to a unique event soon, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, I hope you’re finding time to relax and recharge before Fall kicks into high gear. If you’re looking for something to listen to this weekend, we’ve dropped several great episodes over the past few weeks—covering everything from taking a digital detox, to navigating menopause, to encouraging young people to explore careers in the trades.

Northwest Arkansas is such a dynamic place, full of amazing people doing meaningful work. I hope our episodes help you connect more deeply with the community and discover the stories behind the folks shaping our region. We’ve got over 350 episodes in the archive—and if there’s someone you’d love to hear on the show, you can nominate them by filling out this form.

And finally, a big shoutout to all our local high school football teams kicking off the season this week—and of course, to the Razorbacks as they take the field tomorrow for their 2025 season opener. Let’s see what Coach Pittman’s got in store. Woo Pig!

Check out our latest episodes while you enjoy your weekend.

🎧 This Week’s Episode: Building Futures: How Hands-On Trades Are Shaping Northwest Arkansas Youth

🧭 Are you using FindItNWA.com ? 🎉

We officially launched FindItNWA.com conti—our hyper-local business directory with nearly 2,000 listings and more being added daily. Back in Arkansas, he’s bringing global technique and a farm-to-table passion to Stonebreaker, supporting local farmers and inventive menus—think comfort food with an inventive twist (like lamb and dumplings with a Yemeni zhug sauce!).

Advice for Aspiring Chefs:
Tyler encourages anyone interested in the culinary world to work hard, seek mentors, and learn from every experience. He’s a big believer in manifestation, servant leadership, and embracing opportunities—even challenges—as a chance to grow.

Why Visit Stonebreaker?
Located just minutes from Fayetteville’s square, Stonebreaker offers locally-sourced breakfasts, hearty lunches, and elegant dinners—all in a stunning setting. Chef Tyler’s commitment to Arkansas ingredients creates a dining experience that’s both familiar and delightfully unexpected.

Don’t Miss:

Special tasting events and a beautiful private dining room

Menus with vegan, gluten-free, and creative options

A space where hospitality feels like home

Ready for your next great culinary adventure?
