This method helps in maintaining focus and managing workload efficiently. Time boxing requires one to divide the time they spend into 2 categories - Planning and Execution. In the planning mode you simply plan your week / day out assigning a fix time for each task. You can do this by putting tasks on your calendar and setting all distraction away when working on them. This method helps you manage workloads and deadlines more effectively, encouraging focus, quick decision-making, and regular progress assessments.

My Timeboxing method using TickTick

☑️ Checkout Time boxing technique

blog.ticktick.com/2020/07/24/time-blocking-take-control-of-your-time

Pomodoro Technique

This popular time management method involves working in 25-minute blocks, separated by five-minute breaks. An IDE typically combines a code editor, debugger, and build automation tools into a single graphical user interface (GUI). By integrating these tools, an IDE simplifies the development process, reduces setup time, and helps manage complex projects efficiently. This streamlined environment boosts developer productivity by enabling faster coding, immediate error detection and resolution, and simplifying code deployment. My IDE has integration to all the Setup steps below so through built in features or by installing additional plugins so that I don’t need to switch between multiple tools.

Step 2 - Use Version Control

Version control is a system that records changes to a file or set of files over time, allowing multiple users to collaborate on the same project without interfering with each other's work. It enables developers to revert files back to a previous state, compare changes over time, and merge updates from multiple branches efficiently. By managing different versions and branches of code, version control systems like Git facilitate seamless collaboration among team members, regardless of their location. This helps prevent conflicts, reduces errors, and speeds up the development process, significantly boosting developer productivity.

Here are some best practices -

Commit Often, Push Regularly: Keep your progress secure and share updates frequently.

Write Meaningful Commit Messages: Clearly describe what was changed and why.

Use Branches: Isolate development work to avoid disrupting the main codebase.

Adhere to a Workflow: Follow a standardized workflow like Git Flow to manage changes efficiently.

Perform Code Reviews: Use pull requests for peer review before merging.

Keep the Commit History Clean: Use rebase to maintain a clear history before merging.

Tag Releases: Mark release points with tags for easy version tracking.

Ignore Unnecessary Files: Utilize
.gitignore
to exclude non-essential files.

Secure Sensitive Data: Avoid committing sensitive information, use environment variables instead.

Keep Up to Date: Regularly pull and rebase to minimize merge conflicts.

Step 3 - Setup Docker

Docker is a containerization platform that packages applications with their dependencies into containers, ensuring consistent operation across different environments. This helps eliminate the "it works on my machine" problem and streamlines development, testing, and production setups. By reducing setup times and environmental conflicts, Docker enhances developer productivity and simplifies software deployment and scaling.

Step 4- Setup Debugger

A debugger is a tool that helps developers identify and fix errors in their code by allowing them to execute programs step-by-step, inspect variable values, and control program execution flow. By providing the means to pause and inspect the state of an application at specific points, debuggers make it easier to understand how code behaves and where it goes wrong. This precision in tracking down bugs reduces the time spent on trial-and-error testing and accelerates the development process. Overall, a debugger significantly boosts developer productivity by streamlining the process of diagnosing and correcting software issues.

Step 5 - Preview Links

Preview links are URLs that allow developers and stakeholders to view real-time changes to a web application or site in a live, hosted environment before the changes are merged into the production branch. This feature, often integrated into continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows, enables immediate feedback and testing across different devices and platforms. By providing a direct glimpse of how new features, fixes, or updates will appear and function, preview links help catch issues early, enhance collaboration among team members, and streamline the feedback process. This functionality reduces the iteration time on projects, thus boosting developer productivity and accelerating project timelines.

⚒️ Tools

TickTick

TickTick is a task management and to-do list app that helps individuals and teams organize their work and personal tasks effectively. The goal is to learn from customer feedback, implement improvements, and return these enhancements to the users as quickly as possible. This typically involves developers writing or modifying code, which is where complexities can arise. How do you ensure that necessary product changes are implemented quickly without disrupting other parts of your roadmap? A well-executed Continuous Integration (CI) system can greatly assist with this. In this newsletter, we will explore how to expedite product delivery through effective CI implementation.

An overview of CI Cycle

What is Continuous Integration?

Continuous Integration (CI) Explained

What is Continuous Integration (CI)? A software development practice of merging code changes to a main branch many times per day. Learn how to get started.

semaphoreci.com/continuous-integration

CI is particularly beneficial in a startup environment for several reasons:

1. Rapid Feedback

In startups, where development cycles are short and agility is paramount, CI provides immediate feedback on code commits. This allows developers to identify and address problems early, reducing the cost and effort required for fixes. Rapid feedback loops help maintain development speed without compromising quality.

2. Reduced Risk

By integrating changes frequently, the risks associated with integration are significantly reduced. Developers avoid the "integration hell," a common problem in traditional software development where merging weeks of work from different team members leads to numerous conflicts and bugs. For startups, where the pace is fast and the pressure to deliver is high, minimizing risk is crucial.

3. Quality Assurance

Automated tests in the CI process ensure that every change made is tested, improving the quality of the final product. Maintaining high product quality is critical for startups, as it can be the difference between securing funding or customer acquisition and failing to grow.

4. Efficiency

CI automates repetitive tasks such as code compilation, database migration, and testing. This automation saves valuable developer time, which can then be redirected towards more critical aspects of product development. In a resource-constrained startup environment, enhancing efficiency can leverage limited resources for maximum output.

5. Building a Culture of Transparency

Continuous Integration fosters transparency and collaboration among team members. Since code is integrated and tested frequently, everyone has a clear view of the project's health and the impact of their contributions. This transparency can be especially beneficial in a startup environment, where team dynamics and morale are pivotal to the company's success.

6. Scalability

As startups grow, their projects typically scale, and more developers join the team. CI systems help manage this growth smoothly by ensuring that the process remains consistent regardless of the team size. Scaling up without disrupting existing operations is crucial for startups looking to rapidly expand their business.

For startups, CI is not just a technical best practice but a strategic asset that helps them maintain agility, ensure product quality, reduce risk, and manage growth effectively. By integrating and validating changes continuously, startups can stay responsive to market demands and iterate on their products at a fast pace.

Putting CI into effective practice

Step 1: Feedback → Triage → Backlogs Issues

The first step is to have an effective way to collect feedback from users. In the initial days of a startup, this is likely done by the cofounder themselves and is added as backlogs on product management tools like Linear or even GitHub. However, this process could be automated using a feedback tool like Olvy. Once feedback has been logged, it should be triaged, meaning verifying the issue with some additional technical information and also putting some way to solve/improve the issue. An issue is also assigned a priority determining its order of implementation. Once that is done, the issue could be immediately added to the next sprint or kept in the backlog until the next sprint picks it up.

Triaging an issue on Github

Step 2: Code in Cycles / Sprint

The issue with the highest priority in the backlog is picked first and added to the current Cycle/ Sprint. A developer creates a branch with the issue's name and starts working on the fixes/improvement. If you are using Linear, this could be done using its Branch name features, which will also automatically link the branch with the issue. This could be done manually within GitHub.

A cycle in Linear

Step 3: Reviews

As the improvements are made, the branch could be created as a Pull request to the Staging or Main branch, and a tool like Vercel preview can generate a live preview of the effective changes. Any feedback is done directly on the issue comments, and the PR awaits merge until all those issues are resolved.

Working With Vercel previews.

Step 4: Merge & Deploy

Once all the issues are resolved, the branch could go through an automated Testing phase. Tools for static code analysis, code review, or other quality checks can be integrated into the CI pipeline. These tools help maintain coding standards and improve the overall quality of the code. As all these tests are passed, the code could be then deployed to production.

Step 6: Announce

At the final step, you can go ahead and announce to your customer on a periodic basis using your product release board all the changes you have made. At early stages, I also recommend doing this in person with your early customers to verify good fixes and build trust.

Tools

GitHub

GitHub is an indispensable platform for code hosting that seamlessly integrates continuous integration tools, issue tracking, and project management. It has to do with the build fast and fail fast mentality. A lot of time changes are done but not implemented immediately, discouraging devs' urgency, but if they know that the changes will be implemented immediately, this could lead them to be more serious and quick with the improvements.

Also, check out my talk on Lean DevOps playbook to see how CI comes together into a complete lean DevOps Methodology. 👇🏻

🔃 DevOps that actually works for your startups → The Lean DevOps

A leaner approach to DevOps that can help startup scale while being lean, agile and cheap

buildandscale.amanin.tech/p/devops-actually-works-startups-lean-devops

Powered by beehiiv

It's also true that you are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with. But at the same time, I come from a very employee-type mentality, starting from my school days, then college, and even now in some interactions. A few days ago, during a discussion with my friend (an employee), a strange thing happened that made me realize that there are some differences in the way founders and employees think. As I started noting down these points, it became clearer and clearer to me the difference. Thinking that I might have been biased while creating these points, I wanted to get a second opinion from an employee friend, and she added some points that made things more unbiased.

But why does it even matter?

1. Pivoting, a significant strategic shift, often appears daunting due to prevalent myths that foster doubts and fears. However, debunking these myths reveals the truth about pivoting's potential to redefine success paths.

Common Myths About Pivoting

😟 Fear of Being Seen as a Failure: The misconception that pivoting signals defeat is widespread. Yet, pivoting often leads to uncovering more viable business models.

🤕 Worry About Damaging Reputation: Some believe that changing direction can tarnish a startup's reputation. In reality, the ability to pivot is seen as a strength, demonstrating adaptability and market sensitivity.

🔄 Becoming Habitually Indecisive: There's a fear that one pivot might lead to another, causing perpetual indecision. Successful pivots are, however, data-driven decisions aimed at better aligning with market needs.

🌀 Skepticism Within the Team: Entrepreneurs often worry that pivoting might demoralize the team. Clear communication and involving the team in the decision-making process can mitigate this.

💔 Disappointing Early Supporters: The concern of letting down initial backers is common. Yet, supporters typically prefer pivots over stubbornness that leads to failure.

⏰ Perceived Waste of Time and Resources: The notion that pivoting squanders previous efforts is a myth. Pivots can leverage existing learnings and assets, propelling the startup towards greater success.

But in reality, all these myths are wrong. In fact many great startups have pivoted like Instagram (originally Burbn) and Slack (formerly Glitch) illustrate the transformative power of pivots. We are pivoting as well ( Dinnerfy to Lamatic ) and as we announce this, I wanted to share my own learning of pivot and help you learn from it. In this edition we will see signs that should hint you a pivot, how to make a pivot and then our story.

When to Make a Pivot

Invalidated Problem Hypothesis

When you find strong evidence suggesting that the problem you aimed to solve isn't as pervasive or critical as initially believed, it's a clear indicator that a pivot might be necessary. This phase is critical, as it involves acknowledging that your core assumption about the market need might have been off the mark. Embracing this realization requires adopting a scientist's mindset, where hypotheses are tested and invalidated without bias—a crucial but often challenging step.

Example: Netflix initially started with a model based on DVD rental by mail. As the digital landscape evolved and broadband internet became more accessible, Netflix pivoted to streaming, recognizing the shift in consumer behavior and technology. This pivot transformed Netflix from a mail-order service to a leading global streaming content provider.

The Solution is Not Viable

It's essential to come to the realization that building the solution may be too challenging, and even if accomplished, customers may not be willing to pay the price for it. This disparity arises when the cost of the pain the solution alleviates is perceived to be less than the cost of the product itself. In general, for a solution to be viable, it should offer at least three times the value of the current best options available to customers. This ensures that the benefits of adopting the solution far outweigh any associated costs, leading to greater customer satisfaction and market acceptance.

Example: Magic Leap, known for its ambitious augmented reality projects, had to pivot towards focusing on niche markets and partnerships with businesses after realizing the broader consumer market was not ready for its technology in terms of both adoption and feasibility. The founder

Market Too Competitive

The market is overly competitive, making it tough for small players to grow and stand out. In such saturated spaces, visibility and expansion are limited. Therefore, exploring less crowded markets or untapped niches becomes essential for finding growth opportunities and differentiation.

Example: Shopify began as an online store for snowboarding equipment called Snowdevil. The founders pivoted to e-commerce platform development after realizing the broader need for an easy-to-use e-commerce system.

Impossible to Bootstrap and Unable to Raise Funds

You may find it difficult to sell your product until you've actually built it, which often requires funding. However, securing funding can be challenging due to factors such as market conditions or a lack of credibility in the industry, which may deter investors from providing financial support. Especially for complex technical problems like those in the automobile, aviation, or space sectors, establishing credibility is crucial. Investors are more likely to invest in ventures led by individuals or teams with proven expertise and a track record in these specialized fields. Therefore, gaining credibility through relevant experience, partnerships, or successful projects is vital for securing funding and ultimately bringing the product to market.

Example: Patreon was created by a musician who couldn't fund his music videos. This led to the development of a platform that enables creators to get paid directly by their fans.

Plateaued Customer Discovery

Reaching a point where despite exhaustive efforts, you're no longer able to identify and attract new customers signals a critical juncture. It means your initial customer base has been tapped out, and the strategies that previously drove growth are no longer effective. This plateau suggests either the market you're targeting is too niche with limited expansion potential, or your product's appeal doesn't extend beyond your initial customer segment.

Example: Groupon started as a social activism platform called The Point. The concept of collective action pivoted to collective buying, leading to Groupon's massive success.

Unable to Achieve Hockey Stick Growth

Your product may be gaining users, but it's not reaching the scale required to become a regional juggernaut or a future unicorn. Achieving sustainable unit economics is crucial for any startup, necessitating enough "escape velocity" that new customers continue to come even without additional spending on customer acquisition, akin to Google's model. Initially, acquiring customers is often easier, especially convincing early evangelists. However, as you progress, converting laggards becomes critical for scaling the product. These later-stage users are essential for reaching broader markets and sustaining growth.

Example: Instagram pivoted from Burbn, focusing on photo sharing and filters, which led to its explosive growth and eventual acquisition by Facebook.

Lost Interest in the Problem

Entrepreneurship is undeniably driven by passion, but if it starts feeling more like a job and motivation wanes, it might be time to explore other options. Admitting that entrepreneurship is exceptionally challenging and not everyone can withstand the pressure is crucial. Unless you're genuinely driven by the mission, the demands of entrepreneurship can become overwhelming. Therefore, it's okay to acknowledge if you've lost interest in the problem you're solving and feel inclined to pursue something else. Recognizing when to pivot or move on is a part of the entrepreneurial journey, allowing for personal growth and exploration of new opportunities.

Example: Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr and Slack, pivoted from game development to Flickr when he saw a greater passion and market need for photo sharing, and later from Glitch to Slack, finding a strong demand for communication tools.

Found a Much Bigger Opportunity

This is the best pivot of all. While working on your existing product you were able to find an even better opportunity and are okay with letting go of the progress in pursuit of that bigger opportunity. Many companies were started doing something else but while building their own service/product they realize that solving a subpart of their own problem turned out to be a problem for others and you have strong reason to believe that solving that problem can help you get more customers. But do note, there is a fine balance between having enough commitment that you seem serious yet can challenge your thinking. No matter what path you choose, it should persevere, thoughtful consideration, and a bigger picture.

Example: Slack pivoted from the game Glitch, utilizing its internal communication tool to become a major player in the business communication market.

How to Make Pivots?

Now that we have all the necessary signals on when to pivot, lets see who how you will execute a pivot.

Step 1: Validate Your New Pivot

Before you quickly jump into the pivot, it's important to validate this idea instead of falling into the same situation again. While I agree that working on something is important rather than just wandering in the ideation plane, no engineering effort should ever be wasted, ever. Once you have validated the problem thoroughly, then only proceed with the next step.

The MVP Iteration Process: 10 Strategies for faster product Market Fit

Essentials on how to build SAAS products with AI, DevOps and LLM.

buildandscale.amanin.tech/p/mvp-iteration-process-10-strategies-faster-product-market-fit

Step 2: Get Some Early Customers

A problem is only truly a problem if others also perceive it as such. Therefore, it's crucial to engage in customer discovery as soon as possible. This is the only way to ensure with certainty that your pivot is the correct move. One effective method for conducting customer interviews is the MOM test.

The MOM test stands for:

Market: Understand the market segment you're targeting. Identify who your potential customers are and what their needs and pain points are within that market.

Offering: Focus on understanding your offering or solution. What value does it provide? How does it address the identified needs or pain points of your target market?

Message: Craft your messaging in a way that resonates with your target audience. Clearly communicate how your offering solves their specific problems or fulfills their needs.

During customer interviews using the MOM test method, it's essential to refrain from immediately pitching or selling your solution. Instead, actively listen to your customers' own experiences and problems. By attentively understanding their perspective, you can gain valuable insights into whether your pivot aligns with real market needs and whether your solution effectively addresses those needs.

Step 3: Build a Prototype

Before committing to developing a full-fledged product, it's advisable to create a prototype first. If your pivot emerges as a byproduct of your current idea, consider showcasing your internal process or method to your ideal customers. Remember, if your product genuinely addresses a pressing need, customers are unlikely to be deterred by the absence of a fully polished product. Their primary concern will be whether your solution effectively addresses their pain points and offers value.

Different ways to test your MVP

Essentials on how to build SAAS products with AI, DevOps and LLM.

buildandscale.amanin.tech/p/different-ways-test-mvp

Step 4: Raise Some Funds

If you have thoroughly checked steps 1, 2, and 3, it's time to make the decisive move, recognizing that there's no turning back from here. Pivoting can substantially increase your burn rate, especially if you need to maintain two products simultaneously during the transition period. However, it's crucial for resetting your runway, as your existing business model may no longer hold true.

A savvy investor will view a well-considered pivot as strongly favorable. It demonstrates your willingness to acknowledge and rectify potential shortcomings rather than clinging stubbornly to a failing approach. This openness to change and commitment to growth significantly enhances your chances of securing funding.

Step 5: Migration/Continuity Plan for the Existing Product

This is a critical step indeed. While you're forging a new path, it's imperative not to neglect your existing customers, who played a pivotal role in getting you to this point. Customer trust is paramount in the entrepreneurial journey, as they believed in you when no one else did.

Firstly, assess whether your existing product can break even, where costs equal revenue, and providing continued support won't be an overwhelming burden. If you've built a well-planned Software as a Service (SaaS) without significant technical debt, this shouldn't pose a major issue. You may only need to cover minimal cloud costs. However, if this isn't the case, assist your customers in finding an alternative solution. You might even need to engage with competitors to negotiate a deal that benefits your customers at a discounted rate, without compromising your integrity.

Consider making your solution open-source and allowing customers to self-host it. Above all, strive to make the transition as smooth as possible, providing ample time for your customers to adapt to the changes. Remember, maintaining the trust and support of your existing customer base is crucial, even as you pivot and explore new opportunities.

Step 6: Announce Your Pivot to Your Existing Customers

Plan a celebration for your D-Day pivot announcement. Share your journey openly, emphasizing the positive aspects of change. Spread the word through various channels and engage with the entrepreneurial community. Stay optimistic and resilient, inspiring others with your entrepreneurial spirit.

Case Study - Making Pivot from Dinnerfy to Lamatic

Chuck and I initially launched Dinnerfy, leveraging GenAI to tackle the complex task of generating recipe ideas.

🎉 How We Built a Consumer AI App in 6 Months?

🥙 The Story of Dinnerfy : Automating Dinner and grocery ordering. 🛒

buildandscale.amanin.tech/p/built-consumer-ai-app-6-months

However, during development, we realized the significant effort required to create a reliable production application using GenAI. Recognizing an opportunity to address this specific problem for others, we observed several promising signs:

Our solutions were effective and consistent.

Through customer discovery, we found consensus among others facing the same problem.

People were investing significant time and money into solving this issue.

We secured upfront paying customers.

The lifetime value to customer acquisition cost ratio was notably high.

Investor interest was relatively easy to attract, given the hot market for GenAI.

After mutual agreement, we made Dinnerfy entirely free, benefiting from excellent engineering by our team. Despite this, we successfully launched our product, achieving recognition as Product Hunt's Product of the Day, gaining over 4000 signups, and being featured on various podcasts and blogs. We're immensely grateful for the community's support and consider Dinnerfy a success, offering invaluable learning experiences. Now, our focus shifts to Lamatic.ai. However, as you start working on them, time slips away, challenges mount, and success can seem elusive. In these moments, conventional playbook advice often falls short. We built Dinnerfy thoughtfully, prioritizing the first principles of solving customer pain and setting aside everything else (business model, funding, pitching, elaborate UI mockups, and other complexities). Today, hearing customers speak positively about Dinnerfy reassures us that we've passed the test. We developed Dinnerfy from a mere concept (without even a name) to a fully-fledged GenAI consumer app in six months, on a shoestring budget with just two developers. In this post, I'll share the real story of building this product and hope you can apply these techniques in your own product development journey.

Month 1 - Defining the Problem & Target Audience

Effective problem solvers start by clearly defining the problem. A well-defined problem keeps everyone aligned. Most entrepreneurs don’t start with a problem; they start with an idea, which is likely to evolve (pivot!), but the core problem you are solving should remain constant. A good way to define a problem is using the MOM test principles. This approach involves engaging potential users with a naive mindset, more as a friend eager to understand a problem than as someone selling a solution. It's also crucial to identify your target niche. Although it might broaden later, you should start with a specific user persona. For us, that was busy moms with school-age children. We chose this demographic as they were high spenders with limited free time, representing significant pain points. This decision wasn't random; we surveyed 307 people, divided them into different categories, and identified key issues for each.

Our survey data.

Using the Kano method, we pinpointed gaps derived from the difference between importance and satisfaction with current tools. We narrowed our focus to 3 main problems, forming our ICP (Initial Customer Proposition):

1. Need for new, interesting dinner ideas.

2. Saving time on grocery shopping.

3. Making meal preparation fun and involving the whole family.

But Aman, doesn't this approach limit the user base by reducing the number of addressed problems? That's what I used to think, but it's better to fully solve a few problems than to partially address many. We chose to focus on these issues first and ensure complete solutions before moving on to others.

Month 2 - The MVP and Its Features

Once we were confident about the problem, we focused on solving it by developing features. But first, we needed to personify these problems. We interviewed 50 potential customers from our narrowed-down problem set to understand their issues in their own words and how they were currently addressing them. We transformed this into customer journeys, adding various shortcuts that could be built into an app to save time and add convenience. Our focus was on what features to build, not how to build them. That would come later. We also examined what our competitors were doing and their feature sets. We committed to developing a feature only if we could outperform them. After finalizing the feature list, we categorized them into:

Must Have (Necessary features) - 3 Features

Performance (Features that differentiate us from the competition) - 3 Features

Delighter (Features that add joy to our users' lives) - 2 Features

Product Roadmap and feature list.

The next step was to validate these features.

Month 2-3 - Prototyping & Validation

A good entrepreneur thinks like a scientist. It's more important to address real-world problems than to solve problems you perceive the world has. Like a scientist, your job is to prove or disprove your hypotheses. We turned these features into Figma mockups (unpolished at first) and presented them to the same users, observing their responses. We often made changes to the designs on the spot, seeking their approval, or revisited them later with improvements. To keep this process time-bound, we limited ourselves to a maximum of three iterations with the customer, as further changes tend to yield diminishing returns. We also created Notion-based demos with real content for more authentic feedback from users.

Mockups in Miro

Note that up to this point, our expenditure was minimal, as we focused on ensuring we were building the right product. After gaining sufficient confidence, we made our first investment by hiring a small design studio (pingstudio.net). Although I have some design skills, we felt that exceptional design was crucial for user love. Knowing what to focus on and what to outsource smartly saved us a lot of time.

Final Designs

We managed to get the product design done just in time for the backend and AI implementation. We also planned to iterate the design once we had built something. In the end, Chuck and I made the final decisions and stuck with them.

Month 3-4 - Building the Product

Then came the phase of building the actual product. I always adhere to the Lean DevOps approach when developing a product. The aim is to create the app as quickly as possible, prioritizing speed over perfection or scalability. This strategy allows for immediate user feedback. Fortunately, today's tools enable scalable app development without a large team, and many of them are free. We decided to launch our app as a PWA (Progressive Web App) to reduce friction and facilitate rapid iteration.

1. We utilized Airtable for managing all recipes and recipe generation.

2. Supabase for our app backend.

3. NextJS with Tailwind for the app frontend.

4. Lamatic.ai for all AI functionalities. This included Midjourney for generating food images, creating consistent and realistic visuals that users loved. We also used ChatGPT for generating recipe descriptions, instructions, and grocery lists.

5. Posthog for analytics.

Our Sprint in Linear

For product management, we used Linear, a novel approach to development. We broke down features into individual issues and organized them into 2-week cycles, each containing 5-6 issues. As soon as we had something presentable, we showcased it to customers for real-time feedback. We quickly adapted our product roadmap to align with consumer needs. For example, we learned that users did not understand the swipe feature as a week planner, so we replaced it with a new explore screen.

We also launched our landing page during this time using Carrd.co and created a waitlist using tuemilio. This strategy helped us build a list of eagerly awaiting users for launch.

Our user waitlist.

The technical details of our development process are extensive and will be covered in my future posts.

Month 5 - Testing & Iteration

With a functional product in hand, we began user testing. We revisited our initial user group and observed them struggling with what we thought were straightforward tasks. We made frequent overnight fixes and sought their feedback again. All our customer interactions were recorded using tools like Betafi and Traq, allowing us to share issues directly with developers.

User interviews in Betafi.

This stage was challenging but critical for achieving an optimal user experience. After overcoming the initial hurdles, we shifted to self-onboarding, a key component for user adoption. We monitored their screen sessions using Posthog and reached out when necessary to gain deeper insights. We also undertook a second round of design improvements with the same design firm, incorporating lessons learned from user feedback. Ensuring that we revisited these users after resolving issues helped us build trust. With a polished product, we were ready to share a link and invite sign-ups.

Month 6 - Launch

We gradually rolled out invites to our waitlist users, starting with 5, then 10, and eventually 20 per day. Our referral system also encouraged users to invite friends and family. Initially, we reached out to our personal networks, and their referrals brought in many new signups. We launched a refreshed landing page with enhanced clarity and design (check it out at dinnerfy.com — it looks great!) and decided to do a Product Hunt launch on January 13, 2024.

Final Launch Graphic

This process marked the completion of our journey from a basic understanding of the problem to launching a fully functional app. There are many more details I haven't covered here, but I plan to discuss them in my future blogs at Build and Scale.

TL;DR Lessons

Focus on solving a few problems first.

Engage with your users rather than making assumptions.

Embrace failure, fail fast, and iterate.

Bootstrap development using NoCode and GenAI as much as possible.

Prioritize time over features and aim for quick releases.

Start small rather than focusing on scaling

Cater to a few users initially and then expand.

I hope you can apply some of these product principles in your own development journey.
