</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Heyyyyy keys players 🎹</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Welcome to Week 2 of Mobile Left Hand. Last week we worked The Drill - same chord, both hands, locked together. If you tried it, you already know the real test: drop your right hand and see if your left can hold up alone.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This week&#39;s the fix if you can&#39;t quite do that yet.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>What triggered the idea for me to want to teach you this</b> was a recent summer gig - just me and my daughter, Ada, singing a song. I needed to play the lead line while also holding down the chords underneath it. We were doing Billy Joel&#39;s &quot;Vienna.&quot; The second I had the song down fully, my left hand knew where it was going without me having to think about it and the whole thing opened up - she knew exactly when to come in, the audience recognized the song immediately, and it just sounded beautifully full.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That&#39;s the payoff - <i>now here&#39;s how you get there</i>.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="concept"><b>CONCEPT</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Fair warning as we begin - the mistake almost everyone makes, myself included, is once you start moving chords into your left hand rather than playing octaves... your left hand doesn&#39;t always know where to go. Every chord change feels like you&#39;re playing piano as a beginner again. It&#39;s not comfortable. Your hand will scramble to keep up or just play the wrong thing altogether.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Part of the trick isn&#39;t really a piano trick at all - it&#39;s a mental shift: go slow</b>. Give your left hand - or more accurately, your brain - the chance to actually think through the changes and the new movement. It&#39;s the same thing as your first day at the gym, staring down a machine you&#39;ve never used, half-guessing which way the handle&#39;s supposed to go. I mean, just look how lost I was the first time I went back to the gym.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/b6877394-0235-42ff-a79b-4ca3277fc704/fail-workout.gif?t=1786397012"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The move: find the closest inversion to the chord you just played, so your hand always knows exactly where it&#39;s going. In our example this week we&#39;ll be staying in the key of C and we&#39;re going to use these three shapes:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>C</b> - C, E, G (root position)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>F</b> - C, F, A (same F chord, just voiced with the 5th on the bottom instead of the root - that&#39;s 2nd inversion)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>G</b> - B, D, G (1st inversion)</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Watch how little moves between them. Going from C to F, the E slides up to F and the G slides up to A - that&#39;s it. Going from F to G, the C just drops to B while the F moves to a D, and the A slides down to G. This is the biggest move in this exercise, but even so, your hand basically stays in the same neighborhood the whole time.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Now, here&#39;s why this one&#39;s worth every rep: it&#39;s not only about your fingers finding the right notes - it&#39;s about training your ear to hear a chord change before your eyes ever catch up. Once you can feel it coming from C to F to G without looking down, you&#39;re not playing from memory anymore. You&#39;re playing by ear and by feel. That&#39;s the foundation everything else gets built on.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="practice"><b>PRACTICE</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Two loops to warm up the exact moves you&#39;ll need for today&#39;s <i>homework song</i>:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Exercise 1:</b> C → F → G → F → C<br><b>Exercise 2:</b> F → C → G</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Go slow enough that you&#39;re never guessing - the goal isn&#39;t speed today, it&#39;s certainty. Once both feel natural, you&#39;ve already got the exact moves you need.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I recorded a <i>short</i> (about 8 mins long) loop of <i>Free Fallin</i>&#39; for you, in the key of C, so you&#39;ve got something real to practice against instead of just repeating chords in a vacuum. It&#39;s the same C, F, and G you just learned - the whole song rides on just those three, so there&#39;s nowhere to hide and nothing extra to learn.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The chord chart&#39;s attached below too if you want it in front of you while you play. <a class="link" href="https://youtu.be/xImNloMAK1A?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-left-hand-isn-t-supposed-to-move-that-much" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Watch & play along to the loop right here</a> (<i>it’s a private link - just for subscribers, not on my main YouTube channel)</i>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Play along with your left hand only. Don&#39;t touch the melody yet - that&#39;s next week. Just get comfortable finding C, then F, and G, without freezing.</p><div class="recommendation"><figure class="recommendation__logo"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="currentColor"><path d="M14.8287 7.75737L9.1718 13.4142C8.78127 13.8047 8.78127 14.4379 9.1718 14.8284C9.56232 15.219 10.1955 15.219 10.586 14.8284L16.2429 9.17158C17.4144 8.00001 17.4144 6.10052 16.2429 4.92894C15.0713 3.75737 13.1718 3.75737 12.0002 4.92894L6.34337 10.5858C4.39075 12.5384 4.39075 15.7042 6.34337 17.6569C8.29599 19.6095 11.4618 19.6095 13.4144 17.6569L19.0713 12L20.4855 13.4142L14.8287 19.0711C12.095 21.8047 7.66283 21.8047 4.92916 19.0711C2.19549 16.3374 2.19549 11.9053 4.92916 9.17158L10.586 3.51473C12.5386 1.56211 15.7045 1.56211 17.6571 3.51473C19.6097 5.46735 19.6097 8.63317 17.6571 10.5858L12.0002 16.2427C10.8287 17.4142 8.92916 17.4142 7.75759 16.2427C6.58601 15.0711 6.58601 13.1716 7.75759 12L13.4144 6.34316L14.8287 7.75737Z"></path></svg></figure><h3 class="recommendation__title"> Free Fallin&#39; - C.pdf </h3><p class="recommendation__description"></p><p class="recommendation__description"> 54.56 KB • PDF File </p><a class="recommendation__link" href="https://beehiiv-publication-files.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/downloadables/887896e3-71d8-455c-b790-c3e0480bd8e3/7f1734a7-868f-4c5a-860c-b886d33a2b22/Free%20Fallin%27%20-%20C.pdf?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAQCMHTQSE2JGAGXHJ%2F20260813%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260813T041617Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signature=6019c22b9eaa26af3906d811ce508a67c2b975abb61aa7bf22ba6655dee637f1" download="Free Fallin&#39; - C.pdf" target="_blank" data-skip-utms data-skip-link-id> Download </a></div><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="listen"><b>LISTEN</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I&#39;m introducing something new this week - a section we&#39;ll keep coming back to, called <i>Listen</i>. Each issue (or close to it) I&#39;ll drop a track here, sometimes more advanced than where we&#39;re at technically. The goal is to start stretching what our ears can hear and understand. I&#39;ll be building a running Spotify setlist too, so over time you&#39;ll have a whole soundtrack to grow into.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This week: <a class="link" href="https://open.spotify.com/track/58yFroDNbzHpYzvicaC0de?si=fffdeb6cc7784be6&utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-left-hand-isn-t-supposed-to-move-that-much" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Peace Piece by Bill Evans</a>. Listen for how he&#39;s chording mostly in his left hand while the melody moves and wanders in his right. Fair warning - this one&#39;s advanced and gets pretty jazzy in spots. That&#39;s kind of the point. It&#39;s a look at where this skill can take you.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Also if you want a deeper dive on inversions, I wrote (and recorded a video) about this exact trick a while back: <a class="link" href="https://dnlwht.beehiiv.com/p/sound-like-a-pro-with-this-1-lazy-inversion-trick?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-left-hand-isn-t-supposed-to-move-that-much" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Sound Like a Pro with This 1 &quot;Lazy Inversion&quot; Trick</a>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Go try out the loop, then hit reply and tell me how it went. Or, if you get stuck on something - let me know, I read every reply.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Dan 🎹</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=179b057f-99d8-4091-8f26-663eb4e5a694&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=the_monday_musician">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey - it&#39;s Dan 👋</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you got a stray Monday Musician email a couple weeks back, yeah, about that. I hit the wrong button. That wasn&#39;t supposed to go out.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But here&#39;s what I didn&#39;t expect: people opened it anyway. A year of silence, and you were still there. <i>Thank you</i> for that.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Truth is, I didn&#39;t run out of piano tips. I just kept overthinking what this newsletter should be instead of hitting send. Meanwhile I kept playing gigs, kept leading worship, kept teaching, kept hearing &quot;man, I wish I hadn&#39;t quit piano&quot; after a majority of the services & shows this past year.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So here we go, but on purpose this time…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Heyyyyy keys players 🎹</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Welcome to <b>Week 1 of Mobile Left Hand</b>, a 5-week series to get your left hand holding down bass and chords while your right hand carries the melody.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here&#39;s the mistake almost everyone makes on day one: jumping straight to playing an octave in the left hand, chord in the right, before your left hand can even keep time. It can honestly be really limiting to your playing instead of allowing your left hand to become more agile.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here&#39;s an exercise for you to try this week…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>The Drill:</b> play the exact same chord in both hands, same shape, same rhythm, locked together. Looks too simple to matter, but this is the drill that got my own left hand unstuck from just playing octaves. Try playing the chords against a slow, simple song like &#39;Mary Had a Little Lamb&#39; or a classic like the verse of &#39;My Girl&#39;.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>The real test:</b> once both hands can keep up, drop your right hand entirely and play your left hand alone. If it can&#39;t hold up on its own, take the time to find the closest inversions so your left hand doesn&#39;t have to travel as far. That&#39;s the whole subject of next week&#39;s issue, but if you want a preview, I’ve actually <a class="link" href="https://dnlwht.com/blog/sound-like-a-pro-with-this-1-lazy-inversion-trick/?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-monday-musician-is-back-and-so-is-your-left-hand" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">talked about inversions</a> before.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the meantime, hit reply and tell me which song you&#39;re starting with this week. I read every reply and I really want to help build up our community.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One more thing. I&#39;ve been quietly building something fun on the side, it&#39;s a different way to learn piano built around one idea: what if practicing wasn&#39;t stressful, but rather, the thing that calmed you down? Not perfection, just you, the keys, and ten unhurried minutes.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s early, and I only want to open it to a small group first to help me test the ideas. If that sounds like you, reply &quot;interested.&quot; There&#39;s no contract, just first access when it&#39;s ready.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Until next Monday</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">- Dan 🎹</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">P.S. If that stray email landed in your junk folder, drag this one to your inbox, or add me to your contacts. It tells your email app I&#39;m a friend, not a robot 🤖</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=cc259756-53c7-4157-95c9-70e88f38fbc0&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=the_monday_musician">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

I’ve been working on refining the <i>PlayBack</i> course, but I’ve also been chatting with my wife, Fe. During one of those talks, she asked me something that stuck:</p><div class="section" style="background-color:transparent;margin:0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;padding:0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#F1C40F;"><b>“What kind of content do you actually enjoy sharing?”</b></span></p></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This newsletter started as a way to send out tips each week, but lately, I’ve realized I want to share what I’m learning <i>while I’m playing</i>. </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When I was a kid, I fell in love with the <a class="link" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx2gvHjNhQ0&utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=a-sneak-peek-for-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Axel Foley theme</a> from Beverly Hills Cop. There was something about that synth sound that captivated me - too me, it was the coolest thing I&#39;d ever heard.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I desperately wanted to play it on piano but had no clue where to start. Then one weekend, my Aunt Jeanne sat down with me and we began figuring it out together, note by note.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That moment changed everything for me. Suddenly my brain clicked: &quot;Wait... I can play ANY song I hear if I just spend time sounding it out?!&quot; Suddenly, music wasn&#39;t about deciphering cryptic symbols, but about hearing and recreating the sounds themselves.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Even now, decades later, I can still play that melody perfectly - it&#39;s permanently locked in. And it all started with someone showing me how to match what I heard to the keys on the piano.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That childhood experience is exactly why I&#39;m so excited to announce that <i><b>PlayBack</b></i> - my free 12-week course on playing piano by ear - launches this Thursday!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In Lesson 1, you&#39;ll discover:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>The fundamental skill of pitch matching </b>(<i>what my Aunt Jeanne taught me</i>)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Simple exercises to train your ear </b><i>(including a fun &quot;Higher/Lower&quot; game)</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>How to develop your &quot;inner ear&quot; by humming before playing</b></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>A simple 3-note melody you&#39;ll be able to play immediately</b></p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Learning to play by ear works just like learning a language. Children don&#39;t start by memorizing grammar rules - they listen, imitate, and gradually develop fluency through practice.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Even if you&#39;ve never played a note by ear before, you&#39;ll be matching pitches and playing your first recognizable melody by the end of this lesson!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The full course launches Thursday, and I can&#39;t wait to share it with you. Keep an eye on your inbox - I&#39;ll send you the link as soon as it&#39;s live!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the meantime, try this: Find a simple tune you love (maybe from a movie like I did) and just try humming it. That&#39;s actually the first step in training your ear - and we&#39;ll build on that in the course.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Looking forward to helping you develop this game-changing skill,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">- Dan -</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">P.S. If you know other musicians who might be interested in this, don&#39;t worry - I&#39;ll include a shareable link in Thursday&#39;s email when everything goes live!</p><div class="section" style="background-color:transparent;margin:0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;padding:0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;"><span style="color:#F1C40F;"> * * * </span></p></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Thanks to <b>Pressmaster.ai</b> for sponsoring today’s Newsletter</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="stop-being-the-best-kept-secret-in-">Stop Being the Best-Kept Secret in Your Industry</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Turn trending ideas into social media attention (we detect them for you).<br>This attention into followers. <br>And followers into customers. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Turn ONE conversation into WEEKS of authority-building content, that actually sounds like you. </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It happened again last summer.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Our band had been invited to a college weekend getaway out in Fremont, NE. I was playing keys when our worship leader turned to me between songs and whispered, &quot;Let&#39;s add &#39;Christ Be Magnified&#39; right after this one.&quot;</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">No rehearsal. No chord chart. No warning. Just a spontaneous addition moments before we needed to play it.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For many keyboard players (or any band member, really), this could trigger instant anxiety. But instead, I just nodded, mentally worked out the key, and when the time came, played it as if we&#39;d practiced it all week.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This isn&#39;t some special talent I was born with. It&#39;s something I learned, practiced, and refined over time – the ability to play piano by ear.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s been a while since my last email – about two months, actually. Between work demands, attending all the events for our daughter&#39;s senior year, and a minor health hiccup (all good now!), life’s been wonderfully full. Sometimes you need to step away and it was good to be fully present for the moments that matter most.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Thanks for sticking with me during this quiet period - I&#39;m excited to be back with regular newsletters again.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">During this break, I&#39;ve been secretly working on something I think you&#39;ll find valuable – especially if you&#39;ve ever wanted to develop your ability to play piano by ear. It&#39;s just about ready, and I can&#39;t wait to share it with you next week.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the meantime, I&#39;d love to hear from you. What have you been working on musically? Any particular skills or techniques you&#39;ve been trying to develop on piano?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Reach out and let me know – I read every response and would genuinely like to hear about your musical journey.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Looking forward to reconnecting,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">- Dan -</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">P.S. I&#39;ve been spending nights playing cards with my wife and girls (they destroy me every time), reading & staying warm by the fireplace, grabbing coffees with friends, binging movies, laughing a lot, and even sneaking in a work trip to Austin last week.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Normal schedule? What normal schedule?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As we approached the new year, my wife shared a quote with me from Austin Kleon, NYTimes bestselling author of STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST, that resonated and inspired me:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">&quot;<a class="link" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DENzF3LyH-g/?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=this-may-not-be-for-you-but-i-m-breaking-the-january-rules" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Save your resolutions</a>! January is a hangover month and LONG. February is 28 days - four perfect weeks - and much easier to get through. Go easy in 2025.&quot;</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So here&#39;s what we&#39;re doing together instead of living in that January pressure cooker:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We&#39;re building something <i>real</i> this year. I&#39;m talking exercises to help you learn to play by ear, diving into the Nashville Number System, learning practice techniques that actually work (whether you&#39;re just starting or ready to level up), and breaking down popular songs to show you exactly what&#39;s going on in my head when I approach a new song.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And trust me, we&#39;re just getting started.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Want to know what else is coming?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">·<span style="font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;font-size:7pt;"> </span>Blues scales that&#39;ll make your solos sing</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">·<span style="font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;font-size:7pt;"> </span>Chord inversions for lazy piano players (yeah, I said lazy - efficiency is king)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">·<span style="font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;font-size:7pt;"> </span>Smooth transitions that&#39;ll make your setlist flow like butter</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">·<span style="font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;font-size:7pt;"> </span>Real talk about playing live shows (hint: it&#39;s all about preparation, the right attitude, & a few other secrets I’ve learned the hard way)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But here&#39;s the deal - we&#39;re not rushing. We&#39;re starting small, building habits that <i>stick</i>, and ramping up when February hits. No pressure, just progress.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Oh, and something else brewing: I&#39;m putting together some micro group piano lessons. I&#39;ll send you the details before anyone else sees them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let&#39;s make 2025 count - <i>starting in February</i>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Dan</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">P.S. Seriously, drop me a line about those group lessons. Spots will be limited, and I want my email fam to get first dibs.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">P.P.S. I wondered how they made big sounds with little movement. I thought they were lazy, but I later realized they were smart.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Remember the chord shapes from last week? Today, I want to share something cool about &quot;Lazy Piano.&quot;</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think of a basketball team on a fast break. It&#39;s often quicker and smarter to pass the ball than to try to dribble on your own. Similarly, inversions make it easier to switch between chords smoothly.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In today&#39;s video, I&#39;ll show you:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">How to move between chords like the pros</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The quickest path to take</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Real musical exercises</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is where last week&#39;s basic chord inversions really shine. </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ever wonder why some musicians sound like they&#39;re playing 4D chess while you&#39;re stuck with checkers? Here&#39;s one of their secret weapons: tritone substitution.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This isn&#39;t some mystical technique passed down by jazz gods. It&#39;s a practical, learnable skill that separates the pros from the amateurs.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think of it as your musical lockpick. It opens doors to progressions you never knew existed.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But what exactly is this pro-level trick?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Tritone substitution is like swapping Clark Kent for Superman. Same guy, different impact. Your chord progression goes from mild-mannered reporter to cape-wearing superhero in a single substitution.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s the musical equivalent of stepping into a phone booth and emerging with newfound powers. Same harmonic function, but suddenly you&#39;re flying over the cityscape of your progression, turning heads and dropping jaws.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In simple terms, it&#39;s all about chromatic movement - sneaking around the keyboard in half steps, creating tension and release in unexpected ways.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Why should you care? Because this is what takes your playing from &quot;nice&quot; to &quot;holy cow, how&#39;d I just do that?!&quot;</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s the difference between being a good player and being a player everyone stops to listen to. And the best part of all? Once you get it, you’ll have the ability to use this tool whenever you see fit. It becomes part of your musical DNA.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But let&#39;s be real: like any pro technique, it takes practice. You wouldn&#39;t expect to fly on your first leap from a tall building, would you? Start small. Experiment. Try it in different contexts. See where it fits and where it doesn&#39;t.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And don&#39;t sweat the mistakes. I’ve had my fair share of mistakes while learning this stuff. It&#39;s part of the journey.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ready to sound more like the pros? Want to create progressions that make you and your listeners do a double-take?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I&#39;ve put together a video lesson that breaks down tritone substitution. Not just the theory, but real-world applications. The stuff that&#39;ll actually level up your playing.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Click below to watch. It&#39;s time to add this secret weapon to your arsenal.</p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="true" class="youtube_embed" frameborder="0" height="100%" src="https://youtube.com/embed/WhZ5jGcwACo" width="100%"></iframe><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Now go create some killer progressions. Time to unleash your inner musical superhero.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Dan</p><hr class="content_break"><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="whenever-youre-ready-heres-how-i-ca"><b>Whenever you’re ready, here’s how I can help you:</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1. Interested in FREE piano lessons or know someone who would be? <a class="link" href="https://dnlwht.beehiiv.com/?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=tritone-substitution-the-pro-s-secret-to-killer-progressions" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Signup here to get started!</a> Additionally, I&#39;ll share weekly actionable advice to enhance your music skills + elevate your musical journey! 🙌</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2. <b><a class="link" href="https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=producer.dw%40gmail.com&utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=tritone-substitution-the-pro-s-secret-to-killer-progressions" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Work with me 1:1</a></b> to build out your personalized plan for achieving your musical goals!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=8edb9a5d-4a29-4f1a-a5be-7dd665c7c895&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=the_monday_musician">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

The keyboardist&#39;s fingers danced effortlessly, weaving harmonic magic for our gospel choir and I couldn&#39;t comprehend what he was doing. I mean, I played a bit of keyboard, but not in the way he made it come alive. How was he coming up with all these chords that weren&#39;t listed on the chord chart?</p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="true" class="youtube_embed" frameborder="0" height="100%" src="https://youtube.com/embed/OrqZvUvAQ6k" width="100%"></iframe><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then I discovered one of his secrets: <a class="link" href="https://dnlwht.beehiiv.com/p/8675309-secret-smooth-chord-transitions-unlimited-creativity-pianists?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=hidden-2-5-1s-the-chord-progression-hack-you-ve-been-missing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 formula</a>. What I didn&#39;t realize at the time (but am going to reveal to you now so you don&#39;t waste any more time) is this... <b>it contains hidden 2-5-1 progressions!</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here&#39;s the game-changer:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Start with 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 as your foundation.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Recognize that any three consecutive numbers form a 2-5-1.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Use this to create powerful passing chord movements to your target chord.</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">Example in C major:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Want to land on 6 (Am)? Use 7-3-6 (Bø7 - E - Am7)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Aiming for a 2 chord (Dm)? Use 3-6-2 (Em - Am - Dm)</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">But here&#39;s where it gets spicy. Let&#39;s enhance that 3-6-2 with <a class="link" href="https://youtu.be/NNqOWuYLlYk?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=hidden-2-5-1s-the-chord-progression-hack-you-ve-been-missing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">what we learned last week about borrowing from other keys</a>:<br>Standard: Em - Am - Dm<br><i>Enhanced: E/G# - A7 - Dm</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">This isn&#39;t just theory. This will help you connect the notes to numbers.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Practice this until you can play the scale smoothly and confidently while associating each note with its number.</p></li></ul><hr class="content_break"><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="step-2-memorize-the-7362514-sequenc"><b>Step #2: Memorize the 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 Sequence</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This sequence is the foundation for creating smooth passing chords that will elevate your transitions.</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A fun way to remember it? Sing these numbers to the tune of <b><a class="link" href="https://youtu.be/6WTdTwcmxyo?si=9tHAiehS4VmsXzBm&t=52&utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-867-5309-secret-to-smooth-chord-transitions-unlimited-creativity-for-pianists" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">867-5309/Jenny</a></b>—yes, really! It’s catchy, and you’ll never forget it.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Use repetition to lock the sequence into your muscle memory. Practice saying or playing it multiple times a day.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Challenge yourself by thinking of a number in the sequence and immediately playing the chord associated with that number. For example, if you think &quot;7,&quot; play the B diminished chord (in the key of C Major). Do this until switching between chords becomes second nature.</p></li></ul><hr class="content_break"><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="step-3-practice-the-sequence-and-la"><b>Step #3: Practice the Sequence & Label a Simple Pop Song</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Now that you’ve memorized the 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 sequence, it’s time to put it into practice by labeling a simple pop song in the key of C with the proper numbers.</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Choose a song like <b>“Let It Be” by The Beatles</b> or any other pop song in the key of C. The chord progression for the verse of &quot;Let It Be&quot; is <b>C → G → Am → F</b>.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Using the number system, label each chord: <b>C = 1, G = 5, Am = 6, F = 4</b>. So, the progression becomes <b>1 → 5 → 6 → 4</b>.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>To add a passing chord from our 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 sequence</b>, look at the next chord in the song (for example, the <b>5</b> chord). Then, use the chord that comes just before it in the sequence (in this case, the <b>2</b> chord) as your passing chord. Play the <b>2</b> chord right before the <b>5</b> chord to create a smoother transition. Repeat this process for other places you&#39;d like to place a passing chord in this or any other song.</p></li></ul><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>That’s it for this week!</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Focus on these steps to get comfortable with the <b>7-3-6-2-5-1-4 </b>sequence and notice how it <b>begins to improve</b> your transitions. But this is just the beginning and we’ve really only scratched the surface.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Next week</b>, we’ll dive into an even more advanced way to unlock your creative potential using this progression.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned—there’s so much more to explore together!</p><hr class="content_break"><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="whenever-youre-ready-heres-how-i-ca"><b>Whenever you’re ready, here’s how I can help you:</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1. Interested in FREE piano lessons or know someone who would be? <a class="link" href="https://dnlwht.beehiiv.com/?utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-867-5309-secret-to-smooth-chord-transitions-unlimited-creativity-for-pianists" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Signup here to get started!</a> Additionally, I&#39;ll share weekly actionable advice to enhance your music skills + elevate your musical journey! 🙌</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2. <b><a class="link" href="https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=producer.dw%40gmail.com&utm_source=dnlwht.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-867-5309-secret-to-smooth-chord-transitions-unlimited-creativity-for-pianists" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Work with me 1:1</a></b> to build out your personalized plan for achieving your musical goals!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=752fca5b-8f4e-4806-bd7e-f0331ef0c10e&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=the_monday_musician">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>
