EIN Roundtable Discussion

On April 10th, EIN hosted its inaugural roundtable addressing the current challenges we are encountering in the educational field. Monisha and Whitney, EIN Executive Committee Members, facilitated a productive dialogue encompassing the struggles faced by children during the COVID era, particularly in terms of social adaptation, literacy deficiencies, and developmental hurdles.

Furthermore, we delved into the integration of AI in educational settings, exploring strategies to mitigate indifference among students and educators towards AI utilization for assignments, as well as ensuring its appropriate implementation to enhance student engagement in the classroom.

The event was truly enriching, and we are excited to announce that more roundtables will be organized in the future to foster targeted and well-moderated discussions.

The JUMP! Foundation

The JUMP! Foundation launched a new series of summer programs tailored to cultivate the next generation of global leaders. JUMP! Expeditions are an excellent experience for youth seeking a confidence boost, enhanced sense of belonging, or leadership development.

  1. Foundational Skills Crisis in Thailand Recent findings by the Equitable Education Fund and the World Bank highlight a significant foundational skills crisis among Thai youth and adults.   2. Revamping the 'One Student, One Tablet' Initiative The Thai Ministry of Education plans to reinvigorate the 'One Student, One Tablet' policy, initially introduced over a decade ago. The Game Changer: Ditching University Diplomas for Tailored Certificates

The education realm is forever morphing, and we're currently witnessing a major pivot from conventional university degrees to bespoke certificates. This isn't just reshaping education, it's also revolutionizing the job market.

Many of us grew up with the certainty that a university degree was your golden ticket to a cushy job. But the job market is a different beast now, with employers valuing practical skills and job-specific know-how over traditional degrees. And guess what? Tailored certificates are emerging across the market to meet this need. (Bessen, 2019).

So much change so quickly can be attributed to the breakneck speed of today's work environment. Tech and automation are shaking up the job scene, birthing new roles and retiring old ones. In this fast and furious world, tailored certificates are your fast track to the skills needed for these fresh gigs. For example, a certificate in data science or digital marketing can get you job-ready much more quickly than a four-year degree (Fleming, 2020).

 Let's not forget the cost factor. University degrees across the international market have become untenably expensive, often leaving students with a mountain of personal or governmental debt. Certificates, on the other hand, are typically lighter on the wallet and high in specialization. A Georgetown University from back in 2015 found that some certificates can lead to higher earnings than bachelor's degrees, proving their worth in the job market then and now.

Flexibility and pacing is also a major factor. Many certificate programs are offered online, allowing you to learn at your own pace and place, without the multi-year commitment. This flexibility and efficiency is a godsend for working professionals looking to upskill or reskill without hitting pause on their careers (Cappelli, 2015).

However, this doesn’t mean that the traditional degree is completely out of the market. Instead, they are in need of a truly reflective overhaul regarding use, cost, delivery, and preparation for every-changing job markets. Universities need to not only add certificates to their offerings to stay relevant, they need to rethink the traditional system so broad-knowledge programs and targeted upskilling certificates are complementary toward change.

 All in all, the market pivot from university degrees to tailored certificates mirrors the evolving needs of the job market. Certificates offer a flexible, cost-effective, and targeted route to job-specific skills. But they're not a magic bullet. Both degrees and certificates have their place in the education ecosystem, and the choice between them should hinge on individual career goals and circumstances.

Education Overhaul to Achieve Zero Dropout Rate:

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has announced a plan aiming to revolutionize the educational landscape in Thailand, targeting a zero dropout rate. This initiative is seen as a step towards addressing education inequality and reshaping the future of Thai youth. The Prime Minister emphasized the role of teachers as more than just instructors, but as creators and givers, highlighting their importance in shaping the nation's future​​.

Increased Interest of Chinese Students in Southeast Asian Education:

A notable rise in Chinese students choosing Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia for their higher education, driven by factors such as cost-effectiveness and a simpler application process.

Budget Allocation and Quality of Education:

Despite a substantial budget allocation for education, the Equitable Education Fund (EEF) Thailand has identified that budget alone is not enough to improve the quality of Thai education. The fund suggests that equitable education should be ensured for all students, including those from small schools, by adjusting the budget formula. The focus is on providing quality education across the board, addressing the needs of over 14,660 small schools across the country​​.

MHESI's Achievements and Future Policies:

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (HESI) of Thailand, Supamas Isarabhakdi, showcased the ministry's achievements and future policy directions at the 'Future Thailand' event. Coaching, Maslow, and Bloom…Oh My!

Hello fellow EIN members! I wanted to discuss a bit of how I approach applying coaching to personalized learning, particularly how I combine it with a couple of concepts that are well-known among educators, and how that can lead to successful personalized learning journeys for our students. In my 28 years of experience as an educator, I’ve come to realize that integrating coaching methodology into the educational framework, particularly when guided by Bloom's Taxonomy and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, significantly enhances our ability to support and empower students through their learning journeys. Coaching, with its core principles of inquiry, reflection, goal-setting, and personalized support, serves as a powerful tool for implementing learning pathways that are both meaningful and impactful for my students.

In the context of Maslow's Hierarchy, coaching methodologies prioritize the holistic well-being of the student, ensuring that their physiological and safety needs are addressed as a foundation for learning. Coaches work alongside educators and parents to identify any barriers to learning that may stem from unmet basic needs, advocating for and implementing strategies that ensure students have the necessary support to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

As we move up Maslow's hierarchy towards psychological and self-fulfillment needs, coaching methodologies emphasize the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and esteem within the learning environment. This involves creating opportunities for students to connect with their peers and educators in meaningful ways, as well as setting and achieving personal goals that contribute to their sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Coaches play a crucial role in facilitating these connections and recognitions, guiding students to recognize their own progress and celebrate their achievements.

Transitioning to the implementation of Bloom's Taxonomy within a coaching framework, the emphasis is placed on facilitating cognitive development through tailored, student-centered learning experiences. Coaches employ questioning techniques that prompt critical thinking and reflection, encouraging students to explore their understanding, apply knowledge in new contexts, analyze information critically, evaluate outcomes, and ultimately, engage in creative problem-solving. This dialogic process not only deepens students' cognitive abilities but also nurtures their intrinsic motivation and engagement with the material.

Furthermore, coaching methodologies advocate for goal-setting at various stages of the learning process, aligning with the different levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. Coaches work with students to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that reflect their current level of cognitive development and stretch them towards higher-order thinking skills. This goal-setting process is dynamic and personalized, allowing students to take ownership of their learning journey and adapt their goals as they grow and evolve.

In practical terms, implementing a coaching-based approach to education requires a shift in how we design and deliver curricular and extracurricular experiences. It means adopting a more flexible, student-centered curriculum that allows for differentiation and personalization. It involves training educators in coaching skills, such as active listening, effective questioning, and feedback techniques, to enhance their interactions with students. It also necessitates the creation of a supportive learning environment that encourages experimentation, reflection, and growth.

By weaving coaching methodologies with the insights provided by Bloom's Taxonomy and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, we can create a more adaptive, responsive, and effective educational system. This approach not only addresses the diverse needs and aspirations of our students but also empowers them to navigate their learning journeys with confidence, curiosity, and a deep sense of purpose. None of this is particularly easy, but it is a way forward when we look at how we can reframe education and learning in a student-centered way that gives them (and us!) tools for sustainable success.

The Gingerbread Chronicles Lesson Plans

  • In the last newsletter, Christy shared how she wrote a Christmas story in the style of an advent calendar. The story comprises a total of 25 chapters, each of which is very short and designed to be a mini-book.
    The story is suitable for children of all ages, although some of the vocabulary might be a bit challenging and better suited for those aged 13 and up. However, the story itself should appeal to readers of any age. If you are considering a Christmas lesson plan, this story could be a new addition. Christy is offering it free of charge for educators.

Susanna Nicol teaches EQ to over 100 parents in two days!

  • Our EIN Executive Committee member, Susanna Nicol, EQ Coach for young children and parents and founder of EQ for Kidz, is on a mission to empower parents and educators with practical tools and techniques to cultivate emotional and social intelligence skills in the early years, when it matters most.

    Susanna has been conducting a series of teacher training workshops at Kids Kingdom. She also just delivered an introductory session EQ101: Parenting with Emotional Intelligence to over 100 parents.

The Gingerbread Chronicles Lesson Plans

  • EIN Member Christy has written a Christmas story called "The Gingerbread Chronicles." It's a magical tale set in a small town in the Svalbard islands. The townspeople send gingerbread people to the fae folks, hoping for blessings and good fortune. With twists and turns, each chapter ends with a cliffhanger. This unique advent calendar-style book has a chapter for each day leading up to Christmas morning. Christy also plans to create lesson plans for teachers and tailor the book for different ages and subjects.

News in the Education Industry 📚

  • New Education Era in Thailand:

    • Thailand's education sector is on the brink of a new era with the National Education Bill set to be voted on by Parliament. The bill aims for decentralization, allowing schools more operational control to better cater to the needs of students, parents, and other stakeholders. However, experts voice concerns that the reform might not significantly elevate the education standards in the country. The education draft law also aims to address the issues of school dropouts and those opting for informal education. It's a part of a broader reform including three other education-related bills - the EEF Bill, the Educational Innovations Bill, and the Learning Promotion Bill. There's a shift towards a blended learning approach, integrating offline and online modes, moving away from a purely knowledge-based to a wisdom/thinking-based approach. The use of technology like AI, VR, and nano-learning is seen as a significant trend, but there's concern that it might widen the education gap between the rich and poor due to affordability issues. The Education Ministry also expects holistic learning, distance and hybrid learning, and an entrepreneurial mindset to play an increasing role in Thai education.

  • Mindful Sparks, hosted by EIN Member Lily, is excited to present at the 10th Peace and Conflict Resolution Conference in Bangkok. Their focus will be on "Conflict Resolution in the Classroom," showcasing their unique mindfulness approach to help teachers navigate challenging situations with awareness and compassion.

    Attendees can expect practical strategies for implementing mindfulness techniques in educational settings. Mindful Sparks looks forward to contributing their expertise in utilizing mindfulness for conflict resolution in the classroom.

  • EIN Member Christy, a seasoned stand-up comedian in Thailand, is thrilled to host and produce the quarterly comedy show called High Jinks at Arcadia. 

    The next show will be held on Saturday, November 4th at 8pm on the rooftop of Arcadia. This event promises to be more than just comedy, as it features a halftime show where the audience can participate in a game of hilarity with changing themes and the chance to win prizes.
