It was ahead of its time, a collaborative communication tool with impressive tech. But no one <i>really</i> understood what it was, why they needed it, or how it was different from existing tools. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It was a complete flop.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Meanwhile, look at something like Slack. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Did they invent workplace communication? No. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But they positioned themselves as the <i>simpler, more effective</i> alternative to email. Their messaging was crystal clear. And that’s why they won.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The best product doesn’t win. The best-positioned product does.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="what-actually-sells-a-product"><b>What Actually Sells a Product?</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Positioning That Clicks</b> – What problem are you solving? Who is it for? If your audience can’t answer these in seconds, you’re in trouble.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Messaging That Sticks</b> – If your tagline or elevator pitch confuses people, they won’t stick around to figure it out. Simplify your message until it’s <i>obvious</i>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Customer Education</b> – Most products fail not because they lack features, but because potential customers don’t <i>understand</i> how those features help them. Your marketing should be as much about education as it is about promotion.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Strategic Distribution</b> – Just posting about your product on social media won’t cut it. You need to be visible <i>where your customers are already paying attention.</i> That means a mix of organic content, partnerships, media mentions, and smart paid campaigns.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Creating Demand Before the Product Even Exists</b> – The best brands start selling long before launch. They tease, they build anticipation, they <i>make people feel like they’re missing out.</i> If your launch day is the first time people are hearing about your product, you’re already behind.</p><div class="button" style="text-align:center;"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" class="button__link" style="" href="https://futureofwork.beehiiv.com/subscribe?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=build-it-and-they-will-come-is-the-worst-advice-for-product-marketers"><span class="button__text" style=""> Subscribe </span></a></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="how-to-market-like-you-mean-it"><b>How to Market Like You Mean It</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Talk to Your Users, Relentlessly.</b><br>The best messaging doesn’t come from brainstorming sessions, it comes from listening to real customers. Pay attention to the words they use to describe their pain points and desires, and <i>use that in your marketing.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Simplify, Then Amplify.</b><br>If it takes a paragraph to explain what you do, you’ve lost them. If your messaging is clear enough that a 10-year-old can repeat it, you’re on the right track.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Be Loud in the Right Places.</b><br>Marketing isn’t just about making noise. It’s about making noise <i>where it matters.</i> Find the platforms, communities, and channels where your ideal customers already hang out. That’s where you should be showing up consistently.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Measure What Actually Matters.</b><br>Vanity metrics (likes, followers, impressions) feel good but don’t always translate to sales. Focus on engagement, conversions, and customer retention. If people are seeing your marketing but not taking action, something’s off.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Sell the Outcome, Not the Product.</b><br>People don’t buy products, they buy <i>better versions of themselves.</i> Don’t just market features, market what life looks like after someone uses your product.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="key-takeaway"><b>Key Takeaway</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A great product with bad marketing is like a hidden treasure with no map leading to it. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">No one will find it.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A <i>decent</i> product with <i>great</i> marketing is what creates industry leaders.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So, don’t just build it, <i>position it, communicate it, and make people care.</i> </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s how they’ll come running.</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you found this insightful, pass it along to a fellow marketer or entrepreneur who could use some future-forward thinking. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And hey, let’s stay connected beyond the inbox. Consistency in actions shows reliability, a key trait of any great leader.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Daily Reflection</b><br>Take five minutes at the end of each day to ask yourself:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“What went well today?”</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“What could I have done better?”</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Over time, this self-awareness sharpens decision-making and emotional intelligence.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Listening to Understand, Not Respond</b><br>True listening is a superpower. Pause, process, and ask clarifying questions instead of formulating a response while the other person is speaking.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Giving Micro-Feedback</b><br>Feedback doesn’t need to be a formal review. Small, specific comments like “I loved how you structured that email” or “That idea was insightful—can we explore it further?” help build a culture of recognition and growth.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Showing Gratitude Daily</b><br>A quick “thank you” or acknowledgment of someone’s effort goes a long way. Gratitude fosters loyalty and strengthens relationships.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Saying No Strategically</b><br>Leaders don’t say yes to everything. They prioritize, knowing that focus is key to achieving meaningful results.</p></li></ol><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="how-to-craft-your-career-exit-strat">The Compound Effect of Micro-Habits</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think of micro-habits as daily deposits into a leadership bank. Alone, each action may seem small, but over time, they add up to something much bigger:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Trust is built.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Influence grows.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Decision-making sharpens.</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">These habits are accessible to everyone, regardless of role or title. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Leadership isn’t reserved for CEOs or managers; it starts with how you show up every day.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="how-to-start-cultivating-leadership">How to Start Cultivating Leadership Micro-Habits</h3><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Choose One Habit</b><br>Pick one micro-habit from the list above and focus on it this week.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Be Consistent</b><br>Leadership is a marathon, not a sprint. Even small efforts count when done regularly.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Track Your Progress</b><br>At the end of the week, reflect on how the habit impacted your interactions or decisions. But I’ve learned to spot the difference between being busy and being effective, and I want to share that with you. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So, let’s talk about the 6 signs you’re caught in the “busy” trap and more importantly, how to escape it. </p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="why-listening-is-a-ultimate-skill-f">1. Your Calendar Looks Full, but Your Goals Feel Empty</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><i>Signal:</i></b> Meetings, calls, and errands fill your days, but you’re not any closer to your big goals.<br><i><b>Why it matters:</b></i> A full schedule isn’t the same as a focused one. Being “busy” can feel productive when it’s just a distraction.<br><i><b>How to escape:</b></i> Ruthlessly audit your calendar. Ask yourself: “Does this activity align with my core goals?” If it doesn’t, delegate or eliminate it.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="2-youre-always-saying-yes-to-everyt">2. You’re Always Saying “Yes” (to Everything)</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>Signal:</b></i><b> </b>You agree to every opportunity, favor, or project, even when it doesn’t serve your priorities.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><i>Why it matters:</i></b> Overcommitting often means underdelivering. Saying “yes” to everything leaves little room for meaningful work.<br><b><i>How to escape:</i></b> Practice saying “no” with confidence. A simple, “I’d love to help, but I can’t commit right now,” works wonders.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="3-youre-prioritizing-urgency-over-i">3. You’re Prioritizing Urgency Over Importance</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>Signal:</b></i><b> </b>You spend your day putting out fires instead of making progress on long-term goals.<br><b><i>Why it matters:</i></b> Living in “urgent mode” keeps you reactive, not proactive. That’s what conversation is, right?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Two people… talking… and talking… and talking</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Meetings would end, and I’d feel confident about how much I’d contributed, only to realize later that I’d missed key points, talked over my colleague and had to apologize, or worse, misinterpreted what someone really meant.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It wasn’t until I had a tough feedback session with a coach that I learned the difference between <b><i>hearing</i></b> and truly <b><i>listening</i></b>. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They said, “You’re so anxious to respond that you’re not listening. Slow down, and you’ll <b>listen</b> and <b>understand</b> more than just words.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That advice hit home.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am not fully there but now I pay attention to how I approach conversations. I don’t dread awkward silence. I don’t speak when I don’t have to.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I listen. Without the subtle cues of in-person conversations, the risk of misunderstandings skyrockets. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">How often do we rush to interpret someone’s message instead of asking clarifying questions?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In my experience, the moments where I’ve truly listened, whether during a customer interview, a heated team discussion, or a brainstorming session, were the moments that led to breakthroughs. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Listening builds trust, diffuses tension, and uncovers ideas no one thought to surface.</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="what-intentional-listening-looks-li"><b>What </b><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204);"><b>Intentional listening</b></span><b> looks like in action</b></h3><h4 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="1-lean-into-silence">1. Lean into Silence</h4><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There was a time when silence in a conversation made me uncomfortable. I’d rush to fill it with more talking. But then I learned that silence often invites the other person to go deeper.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For example, during a product feedback session, I once let a long pause linger. The client hesitated, then said, “Actually, there’s one more thing I haven’t shared.” That “one more thing” turned out to be a game-changing insight.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The takeaway? Don’t fear silence. Lean into it.</p><h4 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="2-humanize-your-agenda">2. It’s no longer about big names with millions of followers or hoping for a viral post. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I remember when the playbook was simple: get a mega-influencer to launch your product and cross your fingers for a viral moment. But people’s behavior has shifted since then.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Consumers aren’t as easily swayed by celebrity endorsements or polished feeds. They want real connections. They want to feel like the influencer they follow is a real person, not just a walking advertisement. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This change has been a golden opportunity for brands to prioritize trust over follower counts. Here are my “three” cents on where influencer industry is shifting:</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/17fcee0f-c6d7-47ee-96eb-df35917333a5/sumup-Aqc7znjxROM-unsplash.jpg?t=1730282637"/><div class="image__source"><span class="image__source_text"><p>Photo by <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/@sumup?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">SumUp</a> on <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/photos/a-person-holding-a-cell-phone-in-front-of-a-laptop-Aqc7znjxROM?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Unsplash</a></p></span></div></div><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Micro-Communities: The Real MVPs</b></p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One of the biggest shifts I’ve noticed is the rise of micro-influencers. These are smaller influencers who have around 5,000 to 50,000 followers.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They do not have the reach of a Kardashian, but what they do have is way more valuable: credibility and genuine connection.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Micro-influencers are like that friend who always knows the coolest products before anyone else and gives honest recommendations. They’re deeply embedded in their communities, and their followers actually care about what they say.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">According to stats, micro-influencers often have engagement rates up to 60% higher than their mega-influencer counterparts. It’s not just about likes and comments, it’s about actual conversations and real actions.</p><ol start="2"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Influencers are now playing a ‘long game’</b></p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Another shift I’ve seen is the move from one-off sponsorships to long-term partnerships and collaborations. It’s like dating. If you’re serious about building trust, a single dinner date isn’t going to cut it. The same goes for brands. When an influencer consistently uses and advocates for a brand over time, their audience starts to see the partnership as genuine.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It may also be the fact that there is more realization and discussions around how ‘influencing is not a full-time job’ and that ‘you are dependent on platform’ - All of this is now bringing the issue of stability and playing the long game.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Nike, for example, has nailed this with long-term partnerships with influencers like Casey Neistat and micro-athletes on Instagram. These aren’t just “thanks for the check” posts, they’re authentic collaborations that show the brand integrated into their everyday lives.</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Gen-Z is starting to get ‘tired’</b></p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As a millennial, I saw this coming. Gen-Z grew up in a world of information overload, and now the effects are starting to show in how they live and what they prioritize.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In 2020, 35% of them said being financially secure was a top goal; now it’s 44%. At the same time, the number who want to “make a difference” has dropped by 32%. They&#39;re more focused on securing their future, and the pressure is weighing on them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This stress is going to reshape influencer marketing in 2025. Less than 1 in 10 people in the US and UK find people like Kylie Jenner or David Beckham relatable.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Instead, Gen-Z looks for voices who talk openly about financial struggles, mental health, and sustainable living. Brands that can align with these new values will thrive, but those who stick to flashy, unattainable lifestyles risk getting left behind.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A good example is Rare Beauty’s (<a class="link" href="https://piper2.bluematrix.com/sellside/EmailDocViewer?encrypt=d57a54c1-7914-486f-a813-4baf625ee299&co=Piper&mime=PDF&id=replaceme%40bluematrix.com&utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=my-three-cents-on-influencer-marketing-in-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Gen-Z’s 2nd most popular brand</a>) global brand campaign, titled “Every Side of You.” </p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="true" class="youtube_embed" frameborder="0" height="100%" src="https://youtube.com/embed/2r7CgvO1yho" width="100%"></iframe><div class="button" style="text-align:center;"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" class="button__link" style="" href="https://futureofwork.beehiiv.com/subscribe?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=my-three-cents-on-influencer-marketing-in-2025"><span class="button__text" style=""> Subscribe </span></a></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="key-takeaway"><b>Key Takeaway</b></h2><h4 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="the-future-is-personal-authentic-an"><i>The Future is Personal, Authentic, and Data-Driven</i></h4><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So where does that leave us? The future of influencer marketing is personal, authentic, and data-driven. Brands that focus on building real, long-term relationships with influencers (and their audiences) are the ones that will win. Vanity metrics  follower counts and likes are losing their charm. Instead, it’s all about trust, genuine connections, and likereal impact.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Are you ready to roll with the changes? Because this next chapter of influencer marketing is looking pretty exciting to me!</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you found this insightful, pass it along to a fellow marketer or entrepreneur who could use some future-forward thinking. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And hey, let’s stay connected beyond the inbox. How much freedom should we give our employees? If we give too much too soon, things might slip through the cracks.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>But if we stay too hands-on, we risk micromanaging and stifling the very growth and creativity we want to encourage.</b></i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This was a challenge I personally wrestled with for a long time.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For me, the problem wasn’t just about finding balance—it was about letting go. I had this constant urge to control everything, double-check every detail, and make the final call on every decision. I thought I was being thorough, but what I was really doing was slowing down progress.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I was getting in my own way. This need for control prevented my team from taking ownership, and it kept me buried in work that could have been delegated. As a result, nothing got done as fast as I needed it to.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Letting go of that control was hard. I worried that things wouldn’t be done the way I wanted, or worse, that mistakes would be made. But over time, I realized that by holding on too tightly, I wasn’t allowing my team to grow or take responsibility. The more I trusted them, the faster things moved and the better the results.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In today&#39;s work environment, we need to empower our teams to take initiative and make decisions.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>But how do we, as leaders, know how much autonomy to give? How can we gauge how much trust to extend while still ensuring the work gets done?</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s where the <b>Degrees of Autonomy</b> framework comes in. This model helped me break down the different levels of involvement based on how much trust I had in each person’s ability to perform the task. It allowed me to gradually increase their responsibility without feeling like I was giving up too much control too soon.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/a07ae04e-535d-4bfe-8e59-846fd65387c7/IMG_0073.JPG?t=1728420129"/></div><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="the-degrees-of-autonomy">The Degrees of Autonomy</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here’s how I’ve used these levels in practice, and how you might apply them, depending on the experience of your team member and the task at hand:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“I’ll do it.”</b><br>This is where I started. I would take on most tasks myself, thinking it would be faster or that I could ensure the outcome was perfect. But in reality, this was just adding to my workload and slowing down the entire team.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> If a client needed a presentation, I would handle everything—from research to design—myself, rather than delegating portions of it.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> Taking on everything personally may feel like the safest option, but it’s a bottleneck for growth and speed.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Look into this and give me the particulars, I’ll decide.”</b><br>As I began to realize I couldn’t do everything, I started having my team gather the information or research, but I still made the final decision. I hadn’t yet learned to fully trust them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> I’d ask a team member to research customer trends but still decide myself which direction to take with the campaign.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> This was a good first step in letting go, but still kept too much control in my hands.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Give me your analysis and recommendation for my review.”</b><br>Here, I started to trust my team’s judgment more. I would ask them to analyze a situation and suggest solutions, though I still felt the need to review their work before proceeding.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> A team member would propose a new approach for our marketing strategy, and I would ask them for a detailed breakdown before making the final call.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> While this helped build trust, it slowed things down when I needed to be the final reviewer on everything.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Decide and let me know your decision, but wait for my go-ahead.”</b><br>At this point, I was more confident in my team’s capabilities, but I still wanted a final say before they acted. This allowed me to have oversight without doing everything myself.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> A teammate could develop a customer outreach plan, but I’d ask them to check with me before launching it.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> This helped build trust, but sometimes, waiting for my approval slowed things down unnecessarily.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Decide and let me know your decision, take action unless I decide not to.”</b><br>Now, I was giving my team more independence. They could make decisions and move forward unless I had a serious reason to intervene.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> I allowed a team member to approve a budget for a project, with the understanding that I’d only step in if something was significantly off.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> This approach built trust while still keeping me in the loop for major decisions.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Decide and take action, but let me know what you did.”</b><br>This was where I truly began to trust my team. They could act independently and simply keep me informed after the fact.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> My team could onboard new clients without my direct involvement, and they would brief me afterward on how it went.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> By this point, I had the confidence that my team could handle things effectively, which freed me up to focus on bigger-picture tasks.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p></li></ul></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“Decide and take action, you don’t need to check back with me.”</b><br>Finally, I reached a level of trust where my team could take full ownership. They didn’t need to check back with me unless there was a major issue.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Example:</i> A teammate could run this newsletter and implement strategies without running anything by me, knowing they had full responsibility.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Lesson learned:</i> Giving this level of autonomy accelerated our progress. It empowered my team to take charge and helped me step back from the day-to-day.</p></li></ul></li></ol><div class="button" style="text-align:center;"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" class="button__link" style="" href="https://futureofwork.beehiiv.com/subscribe?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=learning-to-let-go-how-i-stopped-getting-in-my-own-way"><span class="button__text" style=""> Subscribe </span></a></div><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="takeaways">Takeaways:</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The transition from needing control to trusting my team with full autonomy didn’t happen overnight—it was a gradual process. But using the <b>Degrees of Autonomy</b> model helped me understand that trust doesn’t have to be all or nothing. By slowly increasing responsibility and providing the right level of guidance, I could empower my team to grow, take ownership, and make decisions.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you’re struggling with the same control issues I once did, take a step back and consider how you can use this framework to gradually let go. They’re constantly telling you how they feel about your brand.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And if you’re not listening?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> Well, you’re missing out on some seriously valuable insights.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about it. Every piece of feedback, good or bad, is an opportunity to make your product, service, or communication better. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But here’s the catch.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s not enough to just fire off a “thanks for your feedback” and move on.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The magic happens when you dig deeper. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">What are they really saying? Is there something you could improve? </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Maybe ask a follow-up question. Use those insights to actually make a change.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/0b16ed44-0126-4dc4-8d2f-c39c537e9d82/clay-banks-Ox6SW103KtM-unsplash.jpg?t=1727337018"/><div class="image__source"><span class="image__source_text"><p>Photo by <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/@claybanks?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Clay Banks</a> on <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/photos/man-in-grey-crew-neck-t-shirt-smiling-to-woman-on-counter-Ox6SW103KtM?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Unsplash</a></p></span></div></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Because the brands that <i>really</i> win? They’re the ones who know how to:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Listen</b>: Not just hear the feedback, but really get what your customers are saying, even if it stings a little.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Analyze</b>: Spot the patterns. You don’t have to act on every single suggestion, but if several people are saying the same thing, it’s probably worth your attention.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Adapt</b>: Make those small changes that matter. No need to flip everything upside down. Sometimes it’s the little tweaks that make a big impact.</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Bottom line: Don’t just acknowledge feedback, use it to grow. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s how you show your customers you’re listening and evolving with them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Take Netflix, for example. They started out as a DVD rental service. Remember those days?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But they didn’t stop there. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They listened to where the world was heading and completely shifted to a streaming service, which changed the way we consume media. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That kind of flexibility is what sets them apart.</p><div class="button" style="text-align:center;"><a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" class="button__link" style="background-color:#ef2a03;" href="https://futureofwork.beehiiv.com/subscribe?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-customers-hold-the-key-to-your-success"><span class="button__text" style="color:#FFFFFF;"> Subscribe </span></a></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="unpopular-opinion"><b>Unpopular Opinion</b></h2><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="unpopular-opinion">The customer isn’t always right . . but you should listen to them anyway</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let me explain.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There’s this long-standing belief in business that &quot;the customer is always right,&quot; but that’s not entirely true.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> Sometimes, customers make requests or demands that don’t align with your brand’s vision, or they don’t understand the big picture of how your product works.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> And that’s okay! You don’t need to act on every single piece of feedback.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/7a9c71e2-78f3-446e-a323-6f336335298c/abillion-cfBTtK9UX9U-unsplash.jpg?t=1727337220"/><div class="image__source"><span class="image__source_text"><p>Photo by <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/@abillion?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">abillion</a> on <a class="link" href="https://unsplash.com/photos/person-holding-white-samsung-galaxys-4-cfBTtK9UX9U?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Unsplash</a></p></span></div></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">However, you should still listen. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Why?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Because even in complaints or outlandish requests, there’s often a nugget of truth or a pattern worth considering. Instead of brushing off criticism, look for the underlying issue. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Is there a recurring theme in what customers are asking for? </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Could tweaking one small aspect of your product improve the overall experience?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Listening doesn’t mean agreeing with everything. It means being open to learning from it.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="food-for-thought"><b>Food For Thought:</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here’s a question for you: What if you saw every piece of customer feedback as an opportunity for growth instead of criticism?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s easy to get defensive when someone points out something wrong with your product or service. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But what if you flipped that mindset? Next time you get feedback, whether it’s a suggestion, complaint, or even a positive review. Ask yourself two questions:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>What can I learn from this?</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>How can I use this feedback to make my product or service better?</i></p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For example, if multiple customers say your website is hard to navigate, instead of feeling overwhelmed by it, see it as an opportunity to improve the user experience. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That one adjustment could lead to higher customer satisfaction, which in turn leads to loyalty.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Listening doesn’t mean giving up control of your brand.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s about enhancing it with real-world insight from the people who actually use your product.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="closing-thoughts"><b>Closing Thoughts:</b> </h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">At the end of the day, your customers are your greatest allies. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They’re the ones using your product, interacting with your brand, and spreading the word. And the truth is, <b>your brand&#39;s growth depends on how well you listen to them</b>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The most successful brands today don’t just create products or services. They build relationships with their customers. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And relationships are built on communication, which means listening, learning, and adapting when needed. If you can master that, you’ll always stay one step ahead of the competition.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So next time you see that feedback rolling in, don’t just glance at it. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Dive in. Engage with it. And most importantly, take action where it counts. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Your brand’s future is shaped by how well you can adapt to your audience.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Subscribe, Share, Connect:</b> Don&#39;t forget to share it with your fellow entrepreneurs, and connect with us on social media for daily updates.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;"><i>Follow us on </i><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><i><b><a class="link" href="https://www.instagram.com/koi.work/?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-customers-hold-the-key-to-your-success" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Instagram </a></b></i></span><i>| Subscribe </i><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><i><b><a class="link" href="https://futureofwork.beehiiv.com/subscribe?utm_source=futureofwork.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=your-customers-hold-the-key-to-your-success" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Future Of Work</a></b></i></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">That&#39;s it for this week&#39;s edition.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">We&#39;ll be back in your inbox next week with more curated content on the future of work.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">Best regards,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start;">Hira Saeed</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=0148e31e-c276-41bf-aca6-b900fb24f06a&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=future_of_work">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

It’s as simple as that.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The old model of “clocking in” at 9 and dragging through until 5 doesn’t work for everyone and it’s not sustainable. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Employees today want more control over how they manage their time. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This shift isn’t just about accommodating their preferences; it’s about creating an environment where your people can thrive and, as a result, your business can too.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="food-for-thought"><b>Food For Thought:</b></h2><h4 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="wellbeing-and-productivity-go-handi">Well-being and productivity go hand-in-hand</h4><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here’s the thing: flexible work hours are directly tied to employee well-being. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The evidence is clear, when people have more control over their schedules, their stress decreases, mental health improves, and job satisfaction skyrockets. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And guess what? That means better work quality for you.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about it. How often have you or your employees felt mentally drained but still had to “push through” because the clock says so?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s a recipe for burnout, not great work. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When employees are allowed to work when they’re most productive, whether that’s early in the morning, late at night, or split throughout the day, their output improves.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So why stick to rigid schedules?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If it’s about productivity, trust that your employees know when they’re at their best. And when they feel trusted, they’re more likely to stay committed to your organization.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="closing-thoughts"><b>Closing Thoughts:</b> </h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The big question is: Is your company prepared to embrace flexibility? </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Are you ready to create a work environment where people can thrive both in and outside the office?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Flexibility is more than just a trend, it’s the future of work. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The companies that adapt now will be the ones that not only attract but retain the best talent. And if you want stability, you have to sacrifice the flexibility that gig work offers. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It shouldn’t have to be this way. It’s about the lack of stability and the constant pressure to perform, to always be “on.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We talk about the freedom of gig work, but in many ways, it’s a different kind of trap—one that keeps us in a perpetual state of hustle, always looking for the next gig, the next project, the next client. Is this the kind of “freedom” we really want?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Maybe it’s time we start demanding more. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A work environment that gives us flexibility shouldn’t also require us to sacrifice our peace of mind and mental health. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We should be asking for a system that provides both the freedom to work on our own terms and the security to know that our basic needs will be met.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="closing-thoughts"><b>Closing Thoughts:</b> </h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s time we start having more honest conversations about what the gig economy really entails. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s not just about flexibility or freedom, it’s about balance. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We need a system that allows us to work in a way that suits our lives, without having to sacrifice our well-being.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Maybe it’s time to rethink how we view work altogether. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Instead of settling for the current model, we could push for a future where flexibility doesn’t come at the expense of stability. It&#39;s creating a connection. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s about making customers feel like they understand and believe in what the brand stands for. This connection can make people choose that brand over others because they trust it and feel a part of its story.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If a brand doesn&#39;t tell its story effectively, it can feel like just another product on the shelf. Customers might not feel connected or interested, and they could easily go to a brand that does make them feel valued and understood.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Basically, brand storytelling isn&#39;t just about talking. It leaves you feeling disappointed and cheated. Doesn’t it?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Brands sometimes exploit sensitive issues just to boost sales.
