1. A rocky road to peace for the US and Iran - This week, an American helicopter was downed near the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in tit-for-tat strikes from both sides. US President Donald Trump threatened to hit Iran “very hard”, but canned that early yesterday morning, saying that the 2 were close to a peace deal (again).

2. The first Big Freeze without Daniher - FightMND co-founder and AFL great Neale Daniher’s presence at the Collingwood v Melbourne AFL game for The Big Freeze each year was always a feature - and his absence was felt last Monday. Philanthropic Queenslanders Quentin and Kylie Birt donated $40 million to FightMND, saying Daniher was an inspiration: “He just did his thing better than all of us put together.”

3. NDIS reforms under the microscope - Public hearings in the Senate inquiry into the changes were on this week, and advocates voiced some serious concerns. Some said that the changes would disproportionally effect women, and push more families to child protective services… The changes are designed to make the NDIS more financially sustainable long-term, with 300,000 people either being removed or prevented from gaining access to the scheme.

4. A stabbing attack in Belfast - Violent protests broke out after what PM Keir Starmer described as a “sickening” knife attack on Monday night. The accused, Hadi Alodid, is a 30yo Sudanese refugee, and the attack stirred up anti-immigration sentiment. The victim Stephen Ogilvy is still in hospital, and his family has called for calm.

5. Origin in the air - For the Rugby League following states, Game 2 selections were abuzz this week. On the Maroons’ side of things, Reece Walsh is back in the game after being snubbed for selection in game one… They’re looking for a win after an epic comeback from the Blues to take the early series lead.

5. Tariff talks - In (another) case of déjà vu all over again, this week the US listed Australia as one of 54 countries facing a possible new 12.5% trade tax on imports. They say it’s because we haven’t cracked down enough on imports of products to Oz that are made using cheap slave labour.

2. Untangling the ‘death tax’ - This is about a proposed 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts that’s been labelled a “death tax” by the Coalition. The tax would only affect new, discretionary trusts from July 2028, which are a common form of trust for estate planning - though Treasurer Jim Chalmers says there’s no literal inheritance tax in the budget. 3. Another day, another disease - This week it’s a major diphtheria outbreak in the Northern Territory… It’s a bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat that was thought to be largely eradicated but it looks to be making a comeback. This current outbreak is mainly affecting Indigenous Aussies who haven’t been fully vaccinated, and cases are now being recorded in other states as well.

4. Beijing hosts another leader - Just days after Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted US President Donald Trump, he rolled out the red carpet again for Russian President Vladimir Putin… The trip marked 25 years since the 2 countries signed a friendship treaty and firmed up trade relations between them, with 20 trade deals signed. We’ll have to see which world leader travels to this host with the most next…

5. A tide of criticism over the treatment of activists - Australia joined several other countries in condemning the actions of Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who posted video footage online showing him taunting a group of pro-Palestine activists, including 11 Aussies. They were part of a flotilla carrying aid for Gaza, before they were stopped and detained. The Australians onboard were deported to Turkey on Thursday night…

So, what’s happening in the Strait this week? - Great question… Project Freedom (America’s plan to escort ships through the Strait) started on Monday and was then paused as the US and Iran exchanged fire in the Strait on Thursday night and Friday morning. But the ceasefire is sort/kinda still in effect, so what happens next on moving this on is anyone’s guess…

2. More details on the sad life of Kumanjayi Little Baby - We found out that 6 child protection reports were filed before her abduction and death last week. An investigation is underway, and 3 people were stood down (with 2 since reinstated) from the Northern Territory’s Department of Children and Families… Thousands of Aussies gathered at vigils held across the country on Thursday, where her mother urged “everyone to take care of your little ones”.

3. Murder in Sydney’s southwest - We didn’t cover this one, but police were called to a home where a mother, father and son had been killed and another son was injured early Sunday morning. The alleged attacker - the third son of the family - has been arrested.

4. One journey ends, another begins - Four women and their kids from Islamic State-linked families returned to Australia from Syria on Thursday night. Three of the women were arrested on arrival - 2 were charged with offences related to slavery, and one with terror-related charges. The slavery charges are unprecedented in Oz, so there’ll be lots of eyes on it.

5. Reserve is the word - The Albanese Government announced 2 initiatives to shore up our fuel supply this week… Next week’s Budget will include an increase in Australia’s petrol stockpile to 37 days and the diesel and jet fuel supply to around 50 days (which is a lot more than we had…). And gas producers in Oz will need to start reserving 20% of their export volume, but it doesn’t apply to export deals already done.

1. A very dramatic Correspondents’ Dinner - On Sunday morning Oz time, 31yo Cole Allen barrelled through a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton in an alleged attempt to assassinate US President Donald Trump. One officer was shot, but he was protected by his bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery. It’s the third time something like this has happened to Trump, so it’s no wonder there are conversations about the high political temperature in the US ahead of their mid-term elections in November.

2. Tragedy in Alice Springs - The body of Kumanjayi Little Baby, the 5yo girl who went missing last Saturday from the Old Timers town camp, was found on Thursday. Police have arrested 47yo Jefferson Lewis, who is suspected of abducting and murdering her. How did this happen when the safety risks to children in these town camps are clear? These are big questions that linger, says Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.

3. Where are things at with the US and Iran? - Well, a ceasefire is still in place, and the deadline for that 60-day period during which Trump can be at war without US congressional approval is about to expire. He’s arguing that with the ceasefire, the US is technically not at war... Also, Team Trump is cool on Iran’s recent proposal over the nuclear program, so long story short, there’s a long way to go to resolve things.

4. A re-attempt at returning home - An Australian family has left a Syrian detention camp and is trying to get to Oz for the second time in recent months. The group of 13, including 4 women and 9 children, has travelled to Damascus as a first step out, but the Australian Government say they’re not assisting. The family has been warned that they’ll face the full force of the law upon their return…

5. And the interim report is in… - The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion (aka the inquiry post the Bondi mass shooting in December) has made 14 recommendations focused on boosting counterterrorism efforts - and PM Anthony Albanese says they’ll be adopted. Competing blockades - Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have far from died down… The US military is still blocking Iranian ports, and while US President Donald Trump says they’ve got the whole Strait under control, Iranian forces have seized 2 container ships. 2. An (un)holy dispute continues… - Yes, the Trump v Pope story was big last week, but it kicked on through last weekend (and therefore got picked up again in this week’s monitoring) with Pope Leo’s very direct comment for the American President: “I have no fear of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel”.

3. The next round of changes to the NDIS - Federal Health Minister Mark Butler announced the overhaul this week to reduce the number of participants by 160,000 by 2030 and pull back the scheme’s growth rate and expenditure. 4. What’s the deal with gas taxes? - Senate Committee hearings this week have unleashed that can of worms… The Greens and independent Senator David Pocock are calling for a flat 25% tax on gas export revenue, but PM Anthony Albanese says we won’t be doing that.

5. And what’s next for fuel in Oz? - Great question… We’re staying at stage 2 of the National Fuel Security Plan - petrol is still available, but the system is struggling (although we now have more fuel onshore than at the start of hostilities in the Middle East). You might remember that PM Anthony Albanese was in Asia last week, holding talks with the likes of Malaysia and Brunei to try to keep supply coming - the bargaining chip we hold there is all the gas we have to export. So swings and roundabouts…

4. Trump v Leo - The Pope’s call to end war made the US President pretty cranky this week - Trump says the leader of the Catholic Church is “terrible for Foreign Policy”… Trump also shared an AI image of himself as a Jesus-like figure, which he removed after criticism from Christians - he says the image depicted him as a doctor.

5. And Jim Chalmers goes to Washington - That was for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meeting alongside his political counterparts and central bankers from around the world. To coincide with the gathering, the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook modelled the economic impact of conflict in the Middle East, and it’s not good…

1. Ceasefires and peace talks - Less than 2 hours before US President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz expired mid-week, a 2-week ceasefire was agreed. Pakistan played a key role in brokering the deal, which included a 10-point plan to end the war. Both countries are claiming victory, but there’s a long way to go with peace talks kicking off today in Pakistan.

2. A partial re-opening… - Getting oil tankers through to the Strait of Hormuz was a key pillar of the ceasefire agreement, but it’s not happening in any big way, and the longer it goes on, the bigger the global economic impact.

3. An update on Israel’s attacks on Lebanon - After the ceasefire was announced, Israel continued to target the Hezbollah group in Lebanon, killing 300 people in Beirut. The US has asked Israel to “be a little more low-key” with its operation in Lebanon, and now PM Benjamin Netanyahu has said he wants to hold direct peace talks with Lebanon that would see Hezbollah disarmed.

4. The long journey home to Earth - The Artemis II mission is set to splash down at 10.07am AEST today (exciting…) after its 10-day flight around the moon. Orion - which is the name of the capsule the astronauts are flying in - will be travelling at speeds up to 38,405km/hour and enduring 2,760C heat upon re-entry. Yikes… You can watch the coverage of the landing on YouTube.

5. And Australia looks to Singapore for fuel security - PM Anthony Albanese took a trip to meet with his counterpart Lawrence Wong this week. Singapore is one of the biggest oil refinery hubs in the world, so making sure Australia’s fuel supply will be prioritised was the name of the game.

Those votes have translated to 2 seats for One Nation so far, with the complicated count continuing.

4. The current fuel situation - More than 300 petrol stations across Australia have run out of diesel, and some stations have imposed their own limits per vehicle. At the federal level, the debate continues about supply issues v panic buying… The Albanese Government has ruled out rationing, but wants us to reduce our fuel use through things like working from home.

5. And a deal 8 years in the making - The free trade agreement between Australia and the EU has been finalised. There’s a lot to it, but some of the main points are that it’ll eliminate tariffs on things like Aussie wine and seafood, while European cars, clothes and food will be cheaper for us here. But there is still some beef around beef…

1. Growing attacks on Beirut - The Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel have been met with heavy air strikes on Lebanon’s capital of Beirut, in an attempt to disarm the group. The IDF has warned residents of areas to evacuate, but according to Lebanese authorities, almost 700 people have been killed, and another 800,000 have been displaced.

2. Some Lionesses seek asylum - Members of the Iranian women’s soccer team (aka the Lionesses to close that loop for you…) have been granted asylum in Australia following concerns for their safety. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that those who stay will have pathways to permanent residence and that “as Australians, I think a lot of us would just wish the context was something fundamentally different”.

3. Mixed messages over the future of oil exports - The Strait of Hormuz is closed. It’s been a danger zone since the beginning of the conflict, with Iran targeting shipping vessels to put pressure on the West by restricting oil exports from the region. Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said that Tehran is committed to freedom of navigation, but Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei says it will remain closed for now.

4. Fuel arrangements being made in Oz - Aussie fuel standards have been eased for 2 months to allow for an additional 100 million litres of domestic supply to become available. Australia will also make 6 days’ worth of petrol available from the country’s stockpile to allow retailers to better manage their supply. Meanwhile, fuel prices are climbin’…

5. Calls to leave the Middle East - More flights have become available for Aussies leaving the Middle East, with reports that most travellers stranded at the start of the conflict have returned home. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has advised expats from the region to return to Australia, but not all are making plans to.

1. A sad development - The remains of 85 yo Chris Baghsarian (who was abducted from his Sydney home a couple of weeks ago in what police said was a case of mistaken identity) were found this week, and 2 arrests have been made. His family says they “welcome the news of the recent arrests” but are still trying to “come to terms with the incident”.

2. Knocked back by the Supreme Court - Last weekend, US President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, put in place by the use of some emergency powers, were declared illegal by the highest court in the land. He called the decision “very unpatriotic and disloyal to our constitution”, and outlined temporary tariffs of 15% globally, including to Australia.

3. The fall from grace continues - Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has returned to Wood Farm following his arrest, but remains under investigation. There are growing calls to remove him from the line of succession to the throne, which requires Commonwealth countries to agree. As it stands, he's eighth in line for the throne.

4. Hearing from the children of the ‘ISIS brides’ - Aussie media outlets have this week carried pieces about their hope to return home. Some of the women in the group say they would support their children being repatriated without them, but Team Albanese isn’t budging.

5. Matt Utai shooters charged - The former Tigers and Bulldogs player was shot in Greenacre on Tuesday and hospitalised with injuries in the leg and shoulder. Police have arrested a 25yo and 15yo. It’s thought the attack is connected to the Alameddine crime family, and police suspect the incident was targeting Utai’s son, Iziah.

5. A further fall from grace - Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested yesterday at the royal family’s Sandringham Estate on suspicion of misconduct in public office. This is related to the latest release from the Epstein files, which included claims Andrew shared confidential reports with Epstein while he was a UK trade envoy in 2010. He’s since been released from custody and hasn’t been charged, but he remains under investigation.

5. And an update on Dezi Freeman - Another search for Dezi Freeman in Buffalo National Park was underway this week. Police say the alleged cop killer is probably dead, but no body has been found. To be continued…

Rising heat Australia’s east and south - Temperature records have been smashed across NSW, Queensland, and parts of Victoria this week, with some areas reaching close to 50C… Renmark in South Australia took the dubious honour of being the hottest place in Australia – indeed, in the world – on Tuesday, recording a top of 49.6C. Yikes…

5. And a second person killed by ICE agents in Minnesota - Alex Pretti - a protester against the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown - was killed in scenes reminiscent of Renée Good’s death a couple of weeks ago. Tuesday - The Reserve Bank announces its latest interest rates decision at 2.30pm, followed by a media conference at 3.30pm. This is one to watch closely because the inflation numbers out this week weren't great…

Wednesday - It's the second anniversary of the disappearance of Samantha Murphy from a Ballarat run - Patrick Orren Stephenson’s trial for Murphy’s murder begins in April, and he has pleaded not guilty. It’s also the birthday of a small social media platform that began in 2004 - Facebook - you might’ve heard of it…

Thursday - The NSW Coroner will hand down findings from the inquest into the Bondi Junction stabbing. That attack in April 2024 saw 6 people killed and 10 injured at the Westfield shopping centre. It’s also World Nutella Day.

Friday - There's a court mention in Perth at 12.30pm for 20yo Brodie Jake Dewar over the alleged assault and death of former Labor strategist Tim Picton in December. Not a great week in the water for humans - Four shark attacks in Sydney and near Port Macquarie in less than 48 hours is a lot give we usually get 20 in a year… Sydney's had a lot of rain recently, which makes the water murky and flushes nutrients into the harbour - that attracts bait fish, which attracts sharks.

4. The Coalition collapses - The week started with hate and gun laws, and ended with the end of the Coalition. It’s a mess… Some of Ley’s colleagues are calling time on her leadership, but others have defended her position as she says that “Every step I've taken has been with the Liberal leadership team"…

5. And a day of reflection and unity… - On Thursday, Australia paid tribute to the victims of December’s antisemitic terror attack at Bondi Beach during the National Day of Mourning. PM Anthony Albanese praised the Jewish community for its message of unity in the wake of the attack, and said he was “deeply and profoundly sorry that we could not protect your loved ones from this evil”. Monday - It’s Australia Day today. In Sydney, Yabun Festival is on at Victoria Park - It’s the largest community-led celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in Australia.

Tuesday - It’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is a Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, and marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Army in 1945.

Wednesday - The ABS will release the consumer price index for December, so stand by for some inflation numbers there. And it’s the women’s surf coats classic cycling race in Victoria, which is the first event of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race…

Thursday - Hearings will begin in the NSW Supreme Court for a constitutional challenge to anti-protest laws that were brought in the wake of the Bondi Beach massacre, which could go all the way to the High Court. And if you need an escape from the news, Bridgerton season 4 also drops on Netflix on Thursday…

Friday - And if you’re lucky enough to be in Tassie, they’ve got their Festivale happening in Launceston…
