The Golden Era of Affordable Housing

In 1950, the median home price in the U.S. was $7,354. Compare that to 2024, where the median price has skyrocketed to $420,000 (Source: U.S. Census Bureau). Even when adjusting for inflation, that 1950s home would cost about $89,300 today. Not bad, right?

Back then, homes cost less than three years of household income; today, in places like California, it’s closer to nine years.

So, what made homes so affordable in the ‘50s? Well, a lot of things. The post-World War II economic boom, government policies that pushed for homeownership, and the rise of mass-produced housing developments all played a part. Plus, there was plenty of land available for development. The GI Bill gave veterans access to low-interest mortgages with small monthly payments, and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) made it easier for folks with lower credit scores to buy homes.

Then there were builders like Joseph Eichler, who brought affordable modern homes to the masses. His homes sold between $9,000 and $12,000, with down payments as low as $300 and monthly payments between $60 and $80. In today’s dollars, that’s about $120,000. Now? Those same Eichler homes can go for around $2 million, or even more in places like Palo Alto.

A 2,000 sq. ft. Eicher home currently for sale in Oakland asking $1.5M, roughly 120x what it sold for new in 1958.

Of course, the 1950s housing market had its flaws. Not everyone had access to those affordable homes, and some mass-produced houses didn’t age well. Homes were also much smaller—about 983 square feet, compared to today’s average of 2,500. Plus, amenities like air conditioning and indoor garages were rarer than they are today.

Still, 1950s housing affordability shaped the rise of the middle class and helped families build wealth through homeownership. While today’s market is a different beast, the lessons from that era might help us rethink how to make homeownership more accessible again.

What exactly makes a piece of furniture iconic? As I delved into curating this list, I found myself asking this over and over. Is it the way it transforms a room? The way it pushes the boundaries of design? Or is it how it becomes woven into our everyday lives, blending beauty with purpose?

The truth is, it’s all of these things and more. Iconic furniture isn’t just about great design; it’s about leaving a lasting mark, shaping how we live, and reimagining what’s possible for generations to come. These pieces don’t just fill space; they tell stories—of innovation, rebellion, and timelessness.

Sacco Chair, 1968
Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro,

The Sacco chair, or beanbag, is a true design rebel. First showcased in MoMA’s 1972 exhibit “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,” it became a symbol of anti-conformity. This vinyl-and-polystyrene creation molded to your body, making lounging an art form. While it’s undergone countless iterations, its casual charm and cultural significance remain timeless.

George Nakashima’s slab tables introduced live-edge furniture to the world. By embracing the natural imperfections of wood, Nakashima honored both craftsmanship and nature, turning each table into a unique work of art. His minimalist fusion of Japanese philosophy and Shaker simplicity forever changed the way we view woodworking.

606 Universal Shelving System, 1960
Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams didn’t invent modular furniture, but he perfected it with his 606 Shelving System. Its sleek aluminum tracks and customizable design make it endlessly adaptable. Practical yet elegant, the 606 shelving has remained a minimalist’s dream and a timeless solution for any space.

Brutalist Architecture

Brutalist architecture has always sparked strong reactions—whether love or hate, it's hard to ignore.

With béton brut (“raw concrete”) as its namesake and primary material, Brutalism emerged in the mid-20th century as a practical and affordable solution to post-WWII urban devastation. At first centered in England, the style quickly spread across the world in the following decades.

Its bold, utilitarian design, rooted in socialist ideals, rejected ornamentation in favor of raw, functional structures with hard, imposing lines. Once criticized, Brutalism has seen a recent resurgence, proving its lasting impact and striking presence.

The Case Study House Program

Unlike Harry Bertoia, who designed a single collection for Knoll, Eero Saarinen left a lasting mark with multiple iconic designs that became closely tied to the company’s legacy.

One of his most famous pieces, the Womb Chair, was born in 1946 at the request of Florence Knoll, a friend he met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. “I was fed up with the long, narrow lounge chairs,” Knoll remarked. “I wanted a chair I could sit in any way I pleased—sideways, curled up—whatever felt comfortable.”

At the time, lounge chairs followed the rigid norms of how women were expected to sit—upright, with ankles crossed and hands neatly folded. Florence, cofounder of the renowned American furniture company, envisioned something different. She wanted a chair that would allow freedom of movement, offering comfort no matter how one chose to sit.

Saarinen accepted the challenge, designing a chair that embraced multiple seating positions. Originally called No. 70, it quickly earned the nickname “Womb Chair” for its cozy, enveloping shape. “The idea was that most people haven’t felt truly comfortable since they left the womb,” Saarinen explained.

Beyond its unique form, the Womb Chair broke new ground structurally. Saarinen aimed to craft it from a single piece of material, drawing inspiration from shipbuilding techniques. His solution? A padded, upholstered fiberglass shell perched on a polished chrome steel frame, merging simplicity with comfort and adaptability.

Released in 1948, the Womb Chair swiftly became a cultural icon. Santa Claus was famously shown lounging in one in a 1958 Coca-Cola ad, and it even made appearances in The New Yorker and on a Saturday Evening Post cover by Norman Rockwell.

The Case Study House Program, though primarily a regional movement in Southern California, has left a lasting mark on residential design in the United States. Initiated by Arts & Architecture magazine in 1945, the program was a response to the post-World War II housing shortage. Editor John Entenza selected a group of architects to design homes that were affordable, modern, and efficient, using wartime materials and techniques to reflect contemporary life.

The Case Study House Program wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was a groundbreaking experiment in creating functional, easy-to-build homes that prioritized efficiency, simplicity, and affordability. Renowned architects like Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Pierre Koenig came together to design 36 innovative homes in Southern California. These homes emphasized open floor plans, large windows, and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, embodying the principles of mid-century modernism.

Though only a limited number of these homes were built, their influence has been profound. The Case Study Houses set a new standard for modern living, showcasing the potential of modernist design. Their sleek lines, minimalist aesthetics, and emphasis on natural light became the hallmarks of contemporary architecture. The ideas birthed by this program continue to inspire architects and homeowners around the world.

In the digital age, the humble magazine rack might seem outdated, overshadowed by the rise of digital communication. However, as more people seek ways to unplug and enjoy moments away from screens, coffee table books have made a comeback, replacing endless social media scrolling. Enter the Magazine Rack by Giotto Stoppino, a masterclass in functional design. This elegant holder designed in 1972 features six spacious compartments and exemplifies the blend of form and function.

Ring-A-Date Perpetual Calendar

As we shifted to digital organization, our connection to physical representations of time began to fade. But perpetual calendars are finding their way back into our lives, serving as both practical tools and stylish design elements. The Ring-A-Date Calendar by Giorgio Della Beffa, a standout from the 1970s, is one of the most popular choices today, offering a tangible and timeless way to track the days.

Originally introduced in 1985 as the IKEA GUIDE by Niels Gammelgaard, it featured colorful shelves on a metal frame. The 2002 reissue, renamed ENETRI, toned down the color palette, making it a versatile addition to modern homes. The History of Eichler Homes

If you're a fan of mid-century modern design, you’ve probably heard of Joseph Eichler and his unique homes scattered throughout California. Built over 50 years ago, these revolutionary designs continue to influence modern architecture and remain as relevant and inspiring as ever.

Born in New York in 1900, Joseph Eichler spent his early years working for his wife’s family’s business. In the 1940s, after moving to Northern California, Eichler lived in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bazzett House. This experience ignited his passion for modern living, leading him to team up with architect Robert Anshen to design his own suburban home. This collaboration sparked Eichler's vision: to make stylish, modern homes accessible to everyone.

The Rise of Eichler Homes

Post-World War II, Eichler began building his trademark tract houses, catering to young familiesin need of housing. Partnering with Anshen, he introduced innovative features like hot water-heated floors and expansive glass windows. The first batch of 50 three-bedroom, one-bath homes sold for $10,000 each and marked the beginning of Eichler’s success.

Between 1949 and 1966, Eichler built over 10,000 homes in the San Francisco area and around 900 in Southern California. Eichler aimed to improve the quality of housing with stylish yet affordable homes, embodying his vision of "well-designed houses with a sense of moral purpose."

The "California Modern" Style

Eichler homes, known today as “California Modern,” feature open floor plans, post-and-beam construction, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that blend indoor and outdoor living. These homes, with their clean, simple lines, remain timeless examples of functional, minimalist design. Innovations like heated floors and large windows filled homes with natural light.

Though mass-produced, Eichler homes avoided a cookie-cutter look through variations in floorplans and exteriors. This ability to create unique yet standardized homes was one of Eichler’s greatest achievements.

Fostering Community and Loyalty

Eichler was also known for his progressive politics. He maintained a non-discrimination policy, selling homes to anyone regardless of race or religion, and even offered to buy back homes from those uncomfortable with their neighbors. In 1958, he resigned from the National Association of Home Builders over their failure to support this policy. Eichler homes fostered modern family living, with open kitchens and living areas encouraging interaction.

Today, Eichler homeowners are fiercely loyal, often restoring their homes to their original charm and sharing resources within their communities.

For many of us, experiencing an architecturally significant house typically means joining a guided tour. But that hardly let you fully experience the magic of living in one.

Luckily, with a bit of searching, you can find some of these architectural gems available for short-term rentals. It’s a real treat that design enthusiasts often buy these unique properties and rent them out.

Sure, they might cost a bit more, but experiencing these unique spaces firsthand is definitely worth it. Here are some of my top picks for unforgettable stays.

The Eppstein House by Frank Lloyd Wright

While there are plenty of Frank Lloyd Wright homes scattered across the country, visitors can seldom set foot inside one, let alone stay overnight, which is exactly what you can do at The Eppstein House. Built in 1949, the Usonian design house was one of only four Wright designs to ultimately be built in the region.

The Coast Modern by Ned Pratt

Fancy trying out the Modernist lifestyle? This restored Midcentury gem was originally built at the 21st century’s halfway point as the family home of Canadian architect Ned Pratt. Called' “Coast Modern,” the modular home is characterized by its overhanging roof – to counteract the city’s notorious rainfall – as well as oversized windows, high ceilings and an open-plan layout.

The Still Bend by Frank Lloyd Wright

The Still Bend House, also known as Bernard (and Fern) Schwartz House, was designed in 1938. It is considered to be Wright's Life magazine "Dream House," and is a rare example of a two-story Usonian house. The Schwartz House is one of the few Wright homes that allow guests to spend the night. The property is believed to have the oldest, continuously operating in-floor heating system in the country.

The Wolfhouse by Philip Johnson

Most people have heard of Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, but his lesser-known Wolfhouse in Newburgh went up the same year, in 1949. The Eames Storage Unit (ESU)

When you think of Eames design, affordability and innovation come to mind. Charles and Ray Eames aimed to make their designs accessible to nearly everyone. While there were a few exceptions, like the luxurious Eames Lounge Chair, most of their products were designed to be mass-produced, inexpensive, and cheerful. This frugality is also evident in the construction of their home in Pacific Palisades, California (Case Study House #8), which used standard, off-the-shelf materials with very little custom work.

No Eames design better reflects this sense of economy than the Eames Storage Units (ESU). Made from low-cost materials like masonite and laminated birch, and using construction techniques that favored perforated angle iron over traditional joinery, the ESU's were modular storage and shelving systems that were functional, sturdy, and cheap to produce. Introduced by Herman Miller in 1950, the ESU's versatility in both commercial and residential settings made it an immediate success, and they are still in production today.

The ESUs were designed for exceptional manufacturing economy, using standard elements that could be arranged into different types of units for various uses—in the living room, dining room, bedroom, or as room dividers. Made of perforated steel extrusions with diagonal bracing, they could be configured as low credenzas or high bookshelves, facilitating open storage, closed storage, and drawers.

There were two color choices: “Colorful” units with primary colors of red, blue, and yellow, and “Neutral” with beige and gray. The wood elements were available in walnut or birch. Unlike anything on the consumer market at the time, their closest parallel was industrial shelving, years before “High Tech” became a buzzword in interior design.

True to the Eames philosophy, all materials were presented honestly: the extruded steel structure was unadorned and unconcealed. Optional metal parts included cross wires and sheets of steel drilled with holes. Thin plywood doors, developed by the Eameses in 1946, were also available, molded with circular indentations for a cared-for appearance and increased durability and resistance to warping.

However, there's a twist that might not have pleased the Eameses: they are not exactly affordable now. Vintage, original examples can sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction, and even new ones made by Herman Miller (and Vitra overseas) are not easy on the wallet. Despite this, the ESU remains a wonderful example of utilitarian design. Occasionally, they pop up quite cheap at flea markets and thrift stores, so keep an eye out!

Andrew Geller’s gravity-defying architecture

When you think of Hamptons architecture, you might picture traditional homes with gray shingles and white shutters, all marked by uninspired symmetry. But the late modernist architect Andrew Geller had a different vision. His unconventional, affordable, and cheerful Long Island beachfront residences are some of the most striking summer homes you'll ever see.

Geller's career began at the industrial design firm Loewy and Associates, where he was tasked with interpreting the "typical American house" for the 1959 American National Exposition in Moscow. His ingenious design, which bisected a full-scale prototype home, was so innovative that it sparked the infamous "Kitchen Debates" between Premier Khrushchev and Vice President Nixon.

This conversation led to the Leisurama project, a design for a prefabricated vacation home created in response to the Soviet claim that the average American couldn't afford a second home. The Leisurama homes became so popular that one was fully installed on the ninth floor of Macy's in New York City. At least 200 of these mass-market homes were built in Montauk, NY.

At the same time, Geller worked on 15 "summer-use playhouses" for private commissions. Each of these homes, located along the Hamptons coastline, explored the form of the cube, using a minimalist structural system to create expressive, rhythmic designs that reflected their inhabitants' personalities.

The first of these projects was commissioned by Elizabeth Reese, the public relations director at Loewy. The Reese House, designed for sunbathing and meditation, took the form of an abstract A-frame. Its geometric design and unique ability to blend with nature while providing a modern retreat sparked widespread interest and inspired countless imitations.

Other unique designs followed. By rotating the rectangular house around the axis of its long edge, Geller developed a signature style that was both abstract and aerodynamic, innovatively responding to the expressionism of the times and the environment of the island.

Though few of Andrew Geller's low-budget, low-maintenance minimalist homes still stand, their images preserve a key moment in American residential architecture.

Spiaggine, the stars of the 1960s summer

There’s something magical about spending summer in Italy, basking in the slow, sweet rhythm of la dolce vita. As this newsletter is all about nostalgia, let’s take a moment to wonder what Italian summers looked like in the 60s. What better way to capture that era than by exploring one of its true beach icons: the Spiaggine.

Few types of cars are as closely tied to a specific place and season as the Spiaggine, the Italian term for beach cars that emerged in the 1950s. The name itself gives it away: spiaggia means beach, and spiaggina is an informal term for beach-goers' folding chairs. These cars were meant for the shore or its nearby areas.

Beach cars, whether conceived as special versions or regular models, embodied the decade's desire for freedom and became a playground for experimentation by coachbuilders and car makers.

Spiaggine originated in Italy in the 1950s as exclusive cars for the elite. Talented coachbuilders like Boano, Ghia, Michelotti, and Pininfarina transformed standard FIAT models into custom creations for high-end clients. This trend soon spread abroad, with England's BMC superminis serving as bases for similar modifications.

However, the elite status of Spiaggine quickly faded as they became symbols of the new era of mass seaside tourism. Although the number of available models and their production remained low, Spiaggine became iconic representations of holidays and outdoor living, with a hint of hippie culture, from the 1960s to the 1970s.

The popularity of Spiaggine began to wane in the 1970s due to the closure of several coachbuilders, stricter safety regulations, and a shift towards more practical cars. Yet, in recent years, several brands have revived the spirit of the Spiaggine with new models. These include the sporty Smart Crossblade (2002), the retro FIAT 500 “Spiaggina ’58” (2018), and the electric Volkswagen ID Buggy (2019).

While modern spiaggine may no longer be able to navigate the pathways, dunes, and shorelines that their predecessors did, they still evoke the seaside atmosphere and carefree spirit of sixty years ago.

The story of Jean Prouvé’s Kangourou chair

Among lounge chairs, few designs blend playful aesthetics and cozy comfort as effectively as Jean Prouvé's Fauteuil Kangourou. After all, what’s cozier than a kangaroo’s pouch?

Jean Prouvé (Paris, 1901 – Nancy, 1984) was a pragmatic and celebrated French designer. For him, a project had real value only if it met society's needs. As a trained metal artisan, Prouvé excelled in understanding and leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of materials such as metal, solid wood, and plywood. His designs always came with detailed instructions, specifying how many people and how much time were needed for assembly.

The Fauteuil Kangourou, which translates to "Armchair Kangaroo," is one of his lesser-known but remarkable pieces. Designed in 1948, this chair is notable not only for its distinctive shape but also for its use of oak, one of Prouvé's favorite materials.

In this chair, form follows function and so does its name. The Kangourou chair earns its marsupial-inspired moniker from its sculptural wooden “haunches.” Like a kangaroo, the chair supports most of its weight on the back legs, where the sitter exerts the greatest stress, allowing for lighter front legs made of thin steel tubes.

Originally intended for public spaces, the Fauteuil Kangourou eventually found its way into private homes. Only a few original 1948 versions exist, as it was never mass-produced.

In 2022, Vitra reissued this iconic design in a limited edition of 150 pieces, developed in collaboration with Catherine Prouvé, Jean Prouvé’s daughter.

I searched the internet to see how much it resells for and found only one listing—on sale for €8,450.

Ten Facts About Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames are true legends of American Modernism. Their countless designs still influence us today. I could talk forever about their work and its impact, but let’s keep it short and sweet.

Here are 10 facts you probably didn’t know about this power couple!

1. They knew how to party

Charles and Ray Eames were friends with some of the biggest names in art and design, like Saarinen, Noguchi, Hoffman, and Nelson. Their circle included artists, designers, writers, architects, painters, and business leaders who all helped shape their profession and gain respect for it.

2. They knew when to shift

When World War II interrupted their furniture design plans, Charles and Ray adapted their plywood molding technique to create splints for wounded soldiers. Lightweight, cheap, and easy to transport, their splint revolutionized battlefield medical care and set the tone for their problem-solving approach. As Charles put it, “We don’t do ‘art’ – we solve problems.”

3. They were anti-aesthetic

Ray famously said, “What works good is better than what looks good because what works good lasts.” The first Eames chair failed because it was too complex to manufacture. Success came when they prioritized practical manufacturing and addressed aesthetics afterward.

4. They designed for the masses, not the elite

Although an authentic Eames chair can now fetch $8,000, Charles and Ray’s mission was clear: “We want to make the best for the most for the least.” Their designs were appealing and accessible, attracting young professionals as well as artists and intellectuals.

5. They were overly curious

Charles and Ray were endlessly curious about the world. Unlike many modernist designers who favored minimalism, they loved clutter. Their home was a Wunderkammer, filled with fascinating objects that captured their attention.

6. Their house embodied their life and work

Built in 1949, The Eames House was a sleek, glass-and-steel structure designed for both living and working. The design, remarkably light and straightforward, was made to suit the Eames' daily needs perfectly. It served as both their home and studio, providing the ideal backdrop for their work-filled lives. In fact, the couple lived there throughout their entire lives!

7. They were not camera shy

Charles and Ray documented their lives extensively, leaving behind hundreds of photos. From personal snapshots to professional spreads in Life Magazine and Art & Architecture, their visual legacy is vast. If they were around today, I bet they’d have an amazing Instagram feed!

8. They saw innovation as a "last resort”

When Budweiser offered them a lucrative logo redesign job, the Eameses turned it down after months of consideration. The reason? They simply didn't think it needed a redesign. They believed in redesigning only when necessary, a principle that many designers still follow today.

9. Their best-selling chair is not what you think it is

While the Eames Lounge and Ottoman are iconic, their most successful piece is the Tandem Sling Seating. Developed for O’Hare International in 1962, it’s now the best-selling airport seating worldwide, supporting millions of travelers daily.

10. They died ten years apart – to the day

Charles and Ray worked together until Charles' death in 1978. Ray completed their ongoing projects before focusing on sharing their theories and practices. She passed away on August 21, 1988, exactly ten years after Charles. One of Charles’ favorite quotes was, “At all times, love and discipline have led to a beautiful environment and a good life” – a perfect reflection of their philosophy and achievements.

Chris Pratt and the Craig Ellwood Landmark

If you're a fan of midcentury modern architecture, you know that Craig Ellwood's designs are iconic. His work embodied the spirit of the 1950s and 60s, focusing on simplicity, utility, and style. So, when news broke that actor Chris Pratt bought and razed one of Ellwood's architectural landmarks to make way for his new home, it sent shockwaves through the community.

Ellwood's sleek designs possessed a mystique that mirrored the man himself. Born Jon Nelson Burke in 1922, he moved from Texas to Los Angeles and reinvented himself as the suave Craig Ellwood, borrowing his new surname from a liquor store. Despite lacking formal training in architecture, Ellwood joined Entenza’s Case Study Program early in his career, creating Case Study House No. 16 in 1952. This was the first of three homes he designed for Arts & Architecture magazine, with House #16 being the only one still standing today.

The demolished structure, known as the Zimmerman house, was an early Ellwood design built in 1950 for Martin and Eva Zimmerman. It was featured in Progressive Architecture magazine and photographed by Julius Shulman. According to US Modernist, the 2,770-square-foot home changed ownership in 1968 and 2004 before being sold off-market to Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger.

Pratt and Schwarzenegger purchased the property in 2020 with plans to build a “15,000-square-foot farmhouse-style mansion”. Despite the historical significance of the Ellwood house, they opted for demolition, citing the need for more space and modern amenities. The decision was met with immediate backlash from preservationists and architecture lovers, who saw the demolition as a significant loss for mid-century modern heritage.

The decision to tear down such an important architectural work has raised concerns about preserving historic designs and the responsibilities of homeowners in maintaining architectural heritage. While some defend the right of property owners to alter their homes as they wish, others mourn the loss of a rare Ellwood piece. This situation underscores the ongoing debate about balancing development with the preservation of historical architecture.

Pratt's planned residence, reportedly designed by acclaimed architect Robert A.M. Stern, may offer modern comforts but marks the end of an era for fans of Ellwood’s work. This incident highlights the delicate balance between development and conservation, prompting reflection on the importance of architectural heritage in a changing world.

The Guide to Buying Vintage Eames Furniture

Over the past decade, second-hand furniture platforms like 1stdibs and Facebook Marketplace have surged in popularity, offering unique finds and hidden gems. But buying authentic pieces, especially the ones designed by the notorious couple Ray and Charles Eames, can be tricky.

Luckily, The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity has released their ultimate guide to acquiring 'an Eames of your own', making the process less mysterious and equipping you with the right knowledge to confidently pursue your own slice of design history.

1. Narrative over aesthetics

It's all about the object’s history: every Eames furniture design carries a fascinating backstory, and being aware of its unique history often adds to its value. Rather than just focusing on appearance, explore the story behind each piece.

Investigate its original owner and manufacturing date, as early Eames chairs were custom-made. Check for any alterations and seek documentation of the piece's origin. Trustworthy sellers will provide this information, helping you develop a deeper appreciation for your Eames piece.

2. Don’t mess with patina

Ray and Charles Eames considered how time and use would affect their designs, often asking, "how will this look in a decade?" A genuine patina can be more desirable than a brand-new look due to its inherent charm.

For collectors, minimal alterations are best to maintain an original piece's value. If you're an Eames owner, avoid modifications to preserve quality, but if changes are necessary, ensure they enhance the item's longevity.

3. Older doesn’t mean better

Don't just focus on age; the oldest pieces aren't always the most valuable. In the early stages of their work, Charles and Ray Eames were still experimenting and refining their designs, so the pieces from that period may not be their best.

Daniel Ostroff, head of acquisitions and research at the Eames Institute provides a good example of this: "For instance, after four or five years of making a four-legged fiberglass chair base with a single connection point in the middle, forming an X shape, Charles and Ray redesigned it to create an H-shaped base. They made this change because the X base, with only one connection point, tended to cause the legs to splay. While collectors might seek out the earlier X-based chairs, the H-base is actually a superior design."

4. Beware of the ‘FrankenEames’

When buying Eames furniture, it's crucial to avoid dealers who mix and match or modify original pieces, as this significantly diminishes their value. Look for chairs with their original bases, checking details like screw condition for authenticity.

Expert tip: use a UV light to detect repairs or replacements; a consistent glow indicates authenticity, while a bright spot could indicate alterations.

5. Buy from established dealers

For novice collectors, buying from established dealers with experience is wiser than opting for cheap deals from uninformed sellers. Reputable dealers value informed customers and willingly answer detailed questions. Avoid dealers who dodge detailed questions.

The Birth of the A-frame

When thinking of the mid-century, one rarely thinks of the A-frame. Yet, the A-frame was a familiar concept at the time, mainly as a remote getaway in the woods or along the coast. One thing is certain: the A-frame home is more than just a distinctive architectural style. It's a symbol of a particular time in American history, a marker of the mid-20th century's vision of leisure and recreation.

Long before A-frames became popular vacation rentals for American weekenders, the all-roof-no-wall architectural style was widely used globally—and still is today—from the traditional Japanese farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, Japan, to Maori meeting houses (marae), to the ski chalets of Switzerland, and beyond.

However, the A-frame house as we know it took off in the United States during the post-World War II era, a period marked by a burgeoning middle class and a newfound enthusiasm for leisure and vacation homes. It’s the American midcentury adaptation that cemented its place in architectural history.

One of the early pioneers of the A-frame in the U.S. was architect Rudolf Schindler. Known for his innovative and experimental designs, Schindler built the first modern A-frame house in Lake Arrowhead, California, in 1934. This structure, known as the Gisela Bennati Cabin, featured the characteristic steep roof and open interior that would become hallmarks of the style.

In the 1950s, architect Andrew Geller further popularized the A-frame with his 1957 Reese House in Long Island. This design showcased the A-frame's unique ability to blend with nature while providing a modern, practical retreat. Publications like The New York Times featured Geller’s designs, sparking widespread interest and inspiring countless imitations and variations.

The Triangle House Phenomenon

The enthusiasm for A-frame houses soared through the early 1970s, eventually reaching such a high demand that numerous companies and institutions began offering prefab A-frame kits. These kits, available throughout North America, were customized to suit clients and local environments, making them affordable and relatively easy for anyone to assemble over a few weekends with friends. With these kits, up to eighty percent of the construction was handled by the homeowner, reducing reliance on contractors and architects.

However, what goes up must come down. By the mid-1970s, A-frames began to lose their allure, shifting from inspired hillside homes to mass-produced structures found at every rest stop and recreation area, regardless of region. As the 1970s gave way to the consumption-driven 1980s and 90s, new A-frame construction essentially ceased. Lavish condos quickly replaced second homes, resort towns shifted to cater almost exclusively to the ultra-affluent, and many leisure areas became inundated with homogeneous complexes and extravagant single-family homes.

The 1960s marked a transformative era when kitchens evolved from mere food preparation areas to vibrant hubs of family gatherings and social interaction. In this dynamic shift, the kitchen emerged as the heart of the home, surpassing the living room as the central space for entertaining in modern American life.

This shift sparked a wave of creative energy among architects of the time, transforming the kitchen into a canvas for both functionality and distinctive aesthetics.

While we often assume that our present era is inherently more sophisticated than the past, a glimpse into 1950s kitchens might change that perception. You might find yourself wanting to raid your grandmother's kitchen for some timeless inspiration.

Prior to the 1950s, kitchens were typically enclosed spaces, often hidden from view during social gatherings. The transition towards the open-plan concept, which we now commonly associate with modern kitchens, began gradually alongside a growing preference for more integrated living spaces.

This shift led to the introduction of the pass-through window, a design innovation that reshaped home layouts and symbolized a shift towards inclusivity and social interaction. These openings facilitated easier food service and fostered conversations between the kitchen and adjoining dining or living areas, effectively bridging the divide between separate rooms.

Wall-mounted refrigerator

Introduced in 1955 by General Electric, the GE wall-mounted refrigerator may appear unconventional by today's standards, yet its design concept was undeniably ingenious.

By replacing a portion of upper cabinets with the refrigerator, all food items are conveniently placed at eye level. This eliminates the need for bending or reaching, as everything is visible at a glance.

Moreover, since this innovative appliance took up no floor space, it freed up room for additional base cabinets. The pink unit above, known as the 'GE Refrigeration Center,' integrated a wall-mounted fridge with pull-out refrigerator or freezer drawers that harmonized with the overall cabinetry design.

Continuing with the theme of groundbreaking refrigerators, it was this particular video that captured my fascination with vintage kitchen appliances and inspired me to share this post. This refrigerator epitomizes the innovative ethos that defined the mid-century era: blending design with functionality to enhance people's lives.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about this specific fridge other than it was manufactured by General Electric. However, its unique features and design ingenuity certainly earn it a well-deserved spot on this list of iconic vintage appliances.

Built-in countertop mixer

In 1956, the Nutone in-built Food Center made its debut as a versatile kitchen assistant, seamlessly integrated into the countertop. Equipped with an array of accessories including a meat grinder, mixer, blender, sharpener, and juicer—all conveniently built-in—it became akin to the modern-day KitchenAid.

In the years following its release, this innovative accessory gained considerable popularity, finding its way into many kitchens of Eichler houses and becoming a symbol of mid-century functionality and design ingenuity.

Frigidaire Flair Stovetop

This revolutionary kitchen appliance truly redefined cooking when it hit the market in 1962. Designed by Jayne Van Alstyne, who joined General Motors in 1955 as a “Damsel of Design,” part of a select group of women hired to make GM’s products more “female-friendly,” the Flair boasted innovative features that set it apart from traditional ranges of its time.

One of its standout features was the electric burners, which smoothly rolled in and out of the appliance like a drawer. When not in use, the burners simply slid out of view, maintaining the Flair's sleek appearance. Additionally, the Flair featured double ovens positioned at counter height for easy access. Unlike traditional oven doors that swung outward, the Flair’s oven doors lifted up, providing a unique and ergonomic cooking experience.
