12th ANNUAL BSLS COMMUNITY FAIR

📍 Date: Saturday, April 4, 2026 from 1PM - 4PM
📍 Location: Crestmont Park at 5200 Selinsky St. Houston, TX, 77048

A day designed for families, students, mentors, retirees, partners, and community supporters.

Featuring:

• Youth activities (egg hunt, face painting, moonwalks and more)

Introducing Our Inaugural BSLS 5K

We are excited to announce our very first BSLS 5K happening the morning of our 12th Annual Community Fair.

This inaugural race will kick off at 8:00 AM at Crestmont Park and is designed to bring families, supporters, and community members together around one powerful theme: wellness in motion.

Whether you run, jog, or walk, this 5K is about more than miles. It is about modeling healthy habits for the next generation, showing up for yourself, and investing in community health.

From the desk of our CEO

There is a moment in every season of growth when you realize that talent alone is not enough. Vision alone is not enough. Drive alone is not enough. Meaningful work requires perspective, accountability, and people who are willing to tell you the truth with care.

Mentorship has shaped my life from the very beginning, and it continues to shape it now. I do not believe mentorship is something you age out of or outgrow. I believe it deepens as your responsibility grows.

I have mentors who help me think strategically and see around corners. Mentors who challenge how I define leadership and success. Mentors who speak into my personal life with honesty and grace. Mentors who remind me that rest, reflection, and alignment are not rewards, they are requirements. Each mentor serves a distinct purpose, and together they help me show up prepared, grounded, and accountable to the work I am called to do.

One of the most practical lessons mentorship has taught me is this. Growth accelerates when you stop waiting for answers and start asking better questions. The quality of your questions often determines the quality of your outcomes. Mentorship shortens learning curves, expands perspective, and opens doors you may not have known to knock on, while still requiring you to walk through them with integrity and effort.

Big Sister Little Sister was built on this understanding. Mentorship is not about dependency. It is about preparation. It is about being equipped to lead yourself with discipline and clarity so that when opportunity meets responsibility, you are ready. Ready to lead teams. Ready to make decisions. Ready to serve others well.

National Mentoring Month is not simply a celebration for us. It is a reminder. A reminder of why this work matters. A reminder that access changes outcomes. And a reminder of our commitment to creating spaces where mentorship happens with intention, consistency, and care.

A Moment to Reflect

As 2025 comes to a close, we pause to reflect on what it truly means to serve with intention. Big Sister Little Sister is not just a program. It is a national community built on trust, consistency, and people choosing to show up for one another.

This year reminded us that meaningful impact is rarely loud, but it is lasting.

A Note from our CEO:

Did You Know?

• Every year in Houston, BSLS hosts a community fair welcoming 300 to 500 children and their families annually, creating a full day of connection, learning, and joy. Through collaborations with Houston SPCA, Free Wheels Houston, and other partners, families received resources ranging from youth camp experiences to bikes, helmets, and safety gear, many for the very first time.

• Our BSLS Chapters and members actively support aligned community efforts nationwide, including a recent collaboration with Lupus Foundation Florida Southeast to advance awareness, care, and fundraising for families impacted by Lupus.

• While many members first connect with BSLS during pivotal academic years, our vision reaches further. We are intentionally building our Office of Alumni Engagement so that mentorship, leadership development, and community do not end at graduation but continue through early career and beyond.

• Our national model prioritizes prevention over intervention, supporting confidence, direction, and stability before challenges escalate.

• BSLS programs help reduce isolation, academic disengagement, and emotional distress by building trusted relationships and community connection, often at critical transition points in a student’s life.

These moments, relationships, and outcomes are why BSLS continues to grow with intention

Chapter Highlights Across the Nation

Throughout 2025, BSLS chapters led impactful initiatives rooted in local community needs, including:

• Leadership and professional development workshops

• Mental, physical, and financial wellness programming

• Environmental cleanups and service initiatives

Zaria D. Ware is a 1st Year Doctor of Pharmacy candidate at Florida A&M University recognized as a Presidential Special Scholarship and Friends of FAM, Inc. Scholar. She has strengthened her academic and clinical skills through the 2025 STEM Summer Scholars Institute at Indiana University, the SHPEP program, and pharmacy shadowing experiences. A dedicated leader, Zaria serves as the 2025–2026 President of the Big Sister Little Sister Mentorship Program at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, is a member of Council Class 36, and a Leader for Council Class 42. As Community Service Chair, she coordinated the Read Across America literacy event and the Touch of Sisterhood mentorship program at John G. Riley Elementary School. She has also held leadership roles within the Pre-Pharmacy Class of 2029 and volunteers with Big Bend Cares, Inc., reflecting her commitment to service, mentorship, and the pharmacy profession.

As this new school year begins, I can’t help but feel excited. Every day, week, and month feels like a fresh start, a reminder that no matter where you are in your journey, there’s always room to grow, rise, and discover new possibilities.

What inspires me most is knowing that none of us are walking alone. Our BSLS family now stretches across 30 chapters in 14 states and Washington, D.C., but more than numbers, it’s the stories of resilience, leadership, and love that make us strong.

Seventeen years ago, on July 7, 2008, during one of the most economically unstable years in recent U.S. history, BSLS was born. In 2008, while many were scaling back, we chose to build. What began as a student-led initiative has now become a nationally recognized, award-winning mentoring program that continues to evolve with the needs of women, youth, and communities across the country.

In these past 17 years, we’ve grown together, laughed together, and at times, cried together. We've faced hurricanes and heartbreak, economic downturns and pandemics, social movements and moments of awakening. But every challenge, every tear, every step towards sustaining our programs and events have been met with resilience, hope, and the strength that only true sisterhood can provide.

Across our 27 chapters in 13 states with 8 chapters pending on the waitlist, we've lifted young women from uncertainty into confidence, transformed strangers into lifelong sisters, and empowered thousands to believe in their own potential. We've seen mentees become mentors, watched quiet voices become powerful leaders, and stood witness as dreams became realities.

If these years have taught me anything, it’s this: never underestimate the power of believing in someone. Never doubt that your story, your voice, and your courage can change not just one life, but households, entire communities, and campuses across the nation. Every young woman we've touched has also touched us, inspiring us to do more, dream bigger, and reach further.

Raygan embodies the very heartbeat of Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program: resilience, leadership, and the quiet courage to dream big and serve even bigger. From watching our graduates take bold steps into their next chapter, to deepening our impact around mental health, and of raising our voices for those still finding theirs, this month we stand behind and up for Mental Health Awareness Month and Better Speech and Language Month.

At BSLS, we don’t just mentor; we support, advocate, and build spaces where future global changemakers feel seen and heard. What We’ve Been Up To:

From coast to coast, BSLS members, alumni, and volunteers have been showing up with purpose.

This spring, we raised over $6,100 in just four days through our national fundraiser—thanks to 133 generous supporters and our top 4 chapter fundraising leaders were members from Clark Atlanta University, University of Florida, University of South Florida, and Southern University. While we celebrate this win, it’s important to note: BSLS retains 50% of the proceeds, and we’re still actively fundraising to support our National Leadership Conference & Gala in Orlando, FL this September.

At FSU, members initiated their annual environmental beach cleanup, protecting both wildlife and preserving our coastlines. In Texas, our 11th Annual Community Fair brought joy and connection to local families with free face painting, community resources, food and kid-friendly fun not to mention Mayor John Whitmire and Chief Police Officer, our local firefighters and amazing community partners. Thanks to Free Wheels Houston, children also received bike, helmet, and lock donations to promote wellness and mobility. Beauty’s Community Garden who contributed free gardening classes, fruit trees and vegetable plants for families. Houston SPCA who donated 70 camp critter spots and educated our community not only on pet adoptions, but animal care.

We also launched Part I of our Better Money Habits webinar, with Bank of America delivering real-world financial tips to empower our youth and supporters alike.

And this? This is just a glimpse of the movement we are making nationally!

In April for Financial Literacy Month, BSLS hosted Part 1 of our Financial Literacy Series in partnership with Bank of America, led by the phenomenal Telebah Woods, SVP of National Strategic Relationships. We tackled debt, savings, negotiating, credit, and building generational wealth; empowering attendees with tools and resources alongside a certificate of completion.

A Note from our Founder:

Last Thursday was my birthday!

Many of the young ladies in Big Sister Little Sister reached out to me directly - and their messages had me in tears. And when you hear stories of the impact it’s had on them, even I’m blown away sometimes.

Like this birthday message I received:

Some of these young ladies were in the Big Sister Little Sister 7, 8, even 10 years ago. And to still hear how deeply it's shaped how they lead and show up today? It’s overwhelming in the best way.

They’re all in different fields now, but they're all doing big things:

• One is on the path to becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

• Another is an entrepreneur and educator.

• Another is in school for supply chain management.

I call them our global changemakers. 

These are the young women who will be educating our children. Performing our surgeries. Leading companies. Changing the world.

A Note from our Founder:

Whe Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program (BSLS) first started, I didn’t just want to create a mentorship program, I wanted to build a movement where women and youth could see their worth, step into leadership, and rewrite narratives that held back their ancestors. I wanted to be the mentor I needed.

For 16 years and counting, this has been a journey of service from the heart, intentional impact, and bold resilience. Through mentorship, community-building, and genuine leadership, we’ve empowered thousands of women and youth to pursue education, break cycles, and walk confidently in their purpose. But here’s the truth:

📊 Women-led nonprofits like BSLS receive less than 2% of charitable funding.
📊 76% of women-focused organizations struggle to get any funding at all.

Yet, we keep showing up. We keep leading. We keep cultivating the next generation of world changemakers. But we can’t do it alone.

💜 This Women’s History Month, we invite you to be the difference.
