They’re only deciding:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">👉 “Is this for me or not?”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And if your message isn’t clear immediately…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>They move on.</b></i></p><hr class="content_break"><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="this-is-why-simple-always-wins">This is why simple always wins.</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One of the best things I ever did in business was simplify the message.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Not make it fancier. <b>Simplify it.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s why something like <b>“GOT CASH?” </b>worked so well.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It didn’t explain everything. It didn’t need to.   <title>Don’t Run Your Business Like Tax Season</title>

Last-minute filings. Rushed decisions. Trying to fix something that should’ve been handled <i><b>months ago.</b></i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>And it’s not just taxes.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Business owners do the same thing inside their businesses.</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They wait until:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sales slow down</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Employees become a problem</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Cash flow gets tight</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Customers stop showing up</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>Then</b></i> they react.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#DA0011;"><b>Last-minute is not a strategy.</b></span></p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Most owners don’t have a systems problem because they’re<i> incapable.</i> They have a systems problem because they <b>wait too long to build them.</b> (I have been guilty of this before too….)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“I’ll fix that later.”<br>“I’ll deal with that when it becomes a problem.”<br>“I just need to get through this busy season.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And then one day… <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><b>It’s a big fukkin problem.</b></span></p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="real-operators-move-differently">Real operators move differently.</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They don’t wait for pressure to force action. They build ahead of it.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Put <b>systems</b> in place before things break</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Fix problems when they’re <i>small</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Create <b>consistency</b> before they need it</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Prepare for slow seasons during strong ones</p></li></ul><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Because they understand something most people don’t:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">👉 <b>You don’t rise to the occasion. You fall to your systems.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When things get busy… stressful… unpredictable…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You don’t suddenly become more organized. But if we’re being honest… A lot of them don’t.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="they-own-a-job">They own a job.</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And it’s usually one they <i><b>can’t </b></i>step away from.</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you have to:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Answer every call</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Solve every problem</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Be there every day</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Put out every fire</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then your business doesn’t run… 👉 <span style="color:#da0011;"><b>You run it.</b></span></p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And if everything depends on you… That’s not a business. That’s a J-O-B with more responsibility.</p><hr class="content_break"><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="ive-been-there">I’ve been there.</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the early days, I thought working harder was the answer.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Longer hours. More effort. More involvement.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And for a while, it works. <i>Until it doesn’t.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Eventually you hit a ceiling. You will get tired. Your team will become inconsistent. I looked for cheap rent.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I thought I was being smart — keeping overhead low, minimizing risk.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But what I didn’t understand yet was this:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#da0011;"><b>Cheap rent usually means low visibility.</b></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And low visibility means fewer customers. Foot traffic MATTERS.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then I had an opportunity to move into a much better location… higher traffic, better exposure.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The rent was <i><b>significantly higher.</b></i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It was uncomfortable. But I made the move. And <i>everything </i>changed.</p><hr class="content_break"><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="why">Why?</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I improved how many people actually <b>saw</b> my business.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s the part most owners miss.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They’re trying to optimize what happens <i>after</i> someone finds them…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Instead of fixing how many people are finding them in the first place.</span></p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="visibility-shows-up-in-more-places-">Visibility shows up in more places than you think:</h1><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your physical location</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your signage</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your message</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your partnerships</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Where you spend your time</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">How often people see your business</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If those aren’t dialed in…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">No amount of “better marketing” will fix it.</p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="a-better-way-to-think-about-growth">A better way to think about growth:</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Instead of asking:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“What marketing trick should I try next?”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Start asking:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">👉 <b>How do I get in front of more of the right people … more often?</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Because when visibility increases… Everything else gets easier.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>You don’t need to reinvent your business. Not strategy.<br>They’re just what everyone else got <i>comfortable</i> doing.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And most of the time?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Everyone is doing the same thing… and getting the same <i><b>average</b></i> results.</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If nobody’s doing it…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">👉 <b>That’s your opening.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When I was building my businesses, I didn’t sit around asking:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“What are my competitors doing?”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I asked:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“What would actually work for the customer?”</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s a very different question.</p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="when-you-follow-the-crowd">When you follow the crowd:</h1><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You blend in</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You compete on price</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You fight for scraps</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You stay predictable</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#da0011;"><b>Predictable businesses are easy to ignore.</b></span></p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="the-businesses-that-win-do-somethin">The businesses that win do something different:</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They say things others won’t say<br>They try things others won’t try<br>They show up where others won’t show up</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Not randomly, but <i><b>strategically.</b></i></p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about it like this:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Every industry has a “box.” Most owners stay inside it because it feels safe.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But the money? The attention? So simple most people overlook them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Back when I was building my early stores, I didn’t have a big marketing budget.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But I needed one thing:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>More people walking through the door.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Around that time, the <b>“Got Milk?”</b> campaign was everywhere. Billboards.<br>Magazines. TV. I’m sure yall remember.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/8bb9f97e-879b-4760-bc55-d9ca2473c9af/got_milk_.webp?t=1773838376"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It was already stuck in people’s heads.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, I leaned into what people were already thinking.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I put up a banner outside my store that said:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>“GOT CASH?”</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That was it. Two words. And it worked.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/fe7c2109-25b3-42bf-aa11-afba312d7a74/Untitled_design__48_.png?t=1773838438"/></div><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="why-it-worked-and-why-most-marketin">Why it worked (and why most marketing doesn’t):</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It didn’t try to be clever.<br>It didn’t try to explain everything.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It <b>entered the conversation already happening in the customer’s mind.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So now, every customer driving or walking by would see the sign and think to themselves…. <i>“well, no I DON’T got cash….”</i> That’s the whole game.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your customer is already thinking something when they pass your business.</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“I’m short on cash”</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“I need help with taxes”</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“I need to fix my car”</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“I need to make more money”</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The businesses that win are the ones that <b>meet that thought head-on.</b></p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="the-truth">The truth:</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your marketing doesn’t need to be impressive. That’s exposure.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I’m going to walk you through step by step how I go about this process in each one of my businesses. Now they mess up.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="step-1-verbal-correction"><span style="color:#da0011;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><b>Step 1: Verbal Correction</b></span></span></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You say:<br>“Hey, let’s talk about this.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">No drama. Just gentle <i>correction.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You document:<br>“On February 4th, I had a conversation with ____ regarding ____.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Short. Factual. <b>File it.</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:0.8rem;">(At the bottom of this e-mail you will find a Verbal Counseling Document)</span></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="step-2-retrain-on-the-specific-issu"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><b>Step 2: Retrain on the Specific Issue</b></span></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Not general training. OR WORSE, you are reading this and you have a company with staff and you don’t send offer letters to candidates you have chosen to pursue for employment. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Pay. Start date. <i>Maybe</i> a sentence or two about the role. It makes expectations clear </b><i><b>before</b></i><b> emotions get involved.</b><br>Pay, responsibilities, performance standards, and conditions are agreed to <i>up front</i> — not debated later.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3. Three years with me. Trained half of my other managers. Knew every customer by name.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Her resignation letter said: <i>&quot;I don&#39;t feel valued.&quot;</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That one sentence cost me <b>$40,000</b> in turnover costs, recruiting efforts, ad expense, onboarding and ultimately training then six months of mistakes from her replacement. </p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="heres-what-most-owners-miss"><b>Here&#39;s what most owners miss:</b></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Your employees haven&#39;t decided to leave in December. They decide in January - <i>when they&#39;re brutally honest about whether your business is worth staying for.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You think retention is about money. <i><b>It&#39;s not.</b></i> I&#39;ve seen people leave $2/hour raises to work somewhere they felt <span style="text-decoration:underline;">respected.</span> And I&#39;ve watched people stay at lower wages because their boss actually gave a damn. <b>PEOPLE WORK FOR PEOPLE !!! </b></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="the-difference-consistency"><b>The difference? Consistency.</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">After losing that manager, I kept my turnover under 20% in an industry that averaged 65%. Not with bigger bonuses. With weekly 10-minute one-on-ones where I actually listened and followed up. These conversations were called TLA&#39;s, which is short for &quot;Talk, Listen, Act&quot; .. As my company grew, my managers and supervisors took the lead on holding these short but important meetings. </p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="Michael & his secretary who has been with him for 20+ years" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/dcfeaafa-b6e1-41d4-893a-f04a8185dc99/MG_and_Sherri.jpg?t=1768407239"/><div class="image__source"><span class="image__source_text"><p>People don&#39;t leave places where they&#39;re seen. </p></span></div></div><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="do-this-in-the-next-30-days"><b>Do this in the next 30 days:</b></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sit down with each key employee. Ask one question:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><i>&quot;If you were running this business, what&#39;s the one thing you&#39;d change?&quot;</i></b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then shut up and listen.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You&#39;ll learn what&#39;s broken AND who&#39;s already mentally checked out. The ones who shrug and say &quot;I don&#39;t know&quot;? They&#39;re already gone - you just don&#39;t know it yet.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then do something with what they tell you. Even if it&#39;s small. <i>Show them you listened.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Most turnover is preventable. Your best people give you signals months before they quit. <span style="text-decoration:underline;">The question is whether you&#39;re paying attention.</span></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="january-and-february-are-your-windo"><b>January and February are your window. If you are not in action now, their resumes are already online. </b></h2><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Stop conducting transactions with your team. Start creating relationships.</b> Become a mentor, become a leader, be the boss you always wanted.
