Indianapolis Zoo Opens at White River Park (1988)

This week in Indiana history, the Indianapolis Zoo opened at its current location in White River State Park in 1988. The zoo was one of the largest privately funded zoos in the United States. At 64 acres, the zoo houses more than 1,400 animals and 235 different species.

The zoo also has the distinction of being the only location in the U.S. to receive triple accreditation as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden. The aquarium is famous for its bottlenose dolphins, and the adjacent botanical garden has over 50,000 plants and over 5,000 species. 

Perhaps most importantly, the zoo is a leader in conservation and animal research, and gives their biennial Indianapolis Prize to individuals with "extraordinary contributions to conservation efforts.”

Indiana Sports Corp’s vision of central Indiana becoming the women’s sports capital of the world by 2050 is coming to life. The City of Fishers announced Wednesday a major Fishers Fieldhouse development that includes dedicated headquarters and a practice facility for the Indy Ignite, fresh off a record-setting campaign in just their second season in Major League Volleyball.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Tornado Outbreak Rips Through Indiana (1990)

On June 2–3, 1990, one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in Indiana history tore across the state. The event was part of a larger Midwest outbreak that produced 65 total tornadoes across the Ohio Valley and Wabash Valley regions, 37 of which touched down in Indiana alone. The storms claimed 8 lives in Indiana and injured hundreds more, while causing widespread property damage across numerous counties.

Among the hardest-hit areas was Pike County, where a powerful F4 tornado developed west of Union and carved through the small unincorporated community before continuing on through the county seat of Petersburg. It killed 6 individuals, left 60 injured, and leveled nearly everything in its path, from a nursing home to businesses, homes, and an elementary school.

🎧 How a Burger Chain Survived 60 Years in the Restaurant Business 🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Perry and Blake Fogelsong of Clancy's Hospitality, a multi-generation, family-owned restaurant group operating seven restaurants across Indiana and Ohio.

The company's start came in 1965 with Indiana Restaurant Hall of Fame member Carl Fogelsong's Clancy's Hamburgers double drive-thru burger concept that expanded to over 30 locations across four states, then declined as national chains entered their small-town markets and the late-'70s oil crisis hit.

After Perry graduated college in 1981, he proposed shifting into "casual theme restaurants," creating Grindstone Charley's, which grew to 13 locations before facing similar competitive pressure.

Our conversation covers how they rebranded toward chef-driven, experience-forward concepts like Grindstone Public House, Grindstone on the Monon, Clancy's at The Garage, and the People Magazine/OpenTable–recognized Fountain Room, plus the new Noblesville hi-fi cocktail lounge, The Pretender, opening in July, and the realities of thin restaurant margins, real estate, and staffing.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

WFBM-TV Goes on the Air (1949)

We are still riding the post-race high of the Indy 500, and if you weren’t there in person, at least you could watch it on TV. On that note, we’re looking back on the first television station in the state of Indiana… WFBM-TV. 

Originally founded as the first radio station in the state in 1924, it later launched as a television station on May 30, 1949. The first-ever broadcast was a documentary on the Indianapolis 500 called “Crucible of Speed.” The broadcast immediately after? The first-ever live broadcast of the race itself. They had only three cameras set up along the main stretch, pit area and Grandstand E. Earl Townsend, a local trial lawyer, was the primary announcer for the coverage. 

Since the 1949 and ‘50 races, the Indy 500 has become subject to local blackouts in the Indianapolis area as there is always a push for locals to attend the race.

SKYLAKE Adventures Grand Opening June 4

It’s been multiple years in the making, but SKYLAKE Adventures off U.S. 31 near Sheridan and Grand Park is set to officially open next Thursday, June 4. This $100 million project is a one-of-a-kind destination that is opening in waves, with a ropes course, mini golf, and more to come. (WTHR)

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, and Bargersville Town Council President Andrew Greenwood about how their fast-growing central Indiana communities gained national attention and why they formed the Central Indiana Regional Development Authority (CIRDA) to collaborate across 32 municipalities representing about 40% of Indiana's GDP.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Al Unser Jr. Wins Closest Indy 500 in History (1992)

It’s race week in Indiana, and today we revisit the closest finish in the race’s 109 runnings. In 1992, Al Unser Jr. held off a charging Scott Goodyear to win the Indianapolis 500 in his 10th attempt. The win was considered an upset, as Unser’s chassis was not considered great on oval tracks. 

The 1992 race was mostly dominated by Michael Andretti, whose fuel pump failed with 11 laps to go while holding a 28-second lead, forcing him to retire from the race as his car coasted to a stop on the track. The caution came out, and Unser Jr. inherited the lead. The finish was a seven-lap battle that put the crowd on the edge of their seats until the end.

Goodyear attempted a slingshot pass on the final straightaway, though it was not successful. Unser won the race by just 0.043 seconds, which equated to less than one car length. 200 laps, 500 miles, and the closest finish for the greatest race in the world.

🎧 The Man Behind $2 Billion in Motorsports Deals 🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Wes Zirkle, founder of Zirkle Advisors and an outside general counsel in sports and motorsports, about his unconventional legal path and major deal stories.

He describes his start at CMG Worldwide, working in celebrity licensing and infringement, and doing an early motorsports deal with the 2001 Aerosmith Indy 500 car. He then joined Just Marketing Inc. (JMI), growing with the agency internationally, and meeting Bernie Ecclestone during F1 work. He was also present when IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard received Jeffrey Katzenberg's pitch that became DreamWorks' Turbo.

After leaving agency life and opening his own firm in 2020, Zirkle discusses representing teams and drivers, including deals involving Ed Carpenter Racing and managing Christian Rasmussen's career and visa while fundraising through Road to Indy.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Soldiers & Sailors Monument Is Dedicated (1902)

If you have visited Indianapolis, chances are you have seen the Soldiers & Sailors Monument. An iconic symbol in Indianapolis, this statue is the centerpiece of Monument Circle, and is considered a staple in the city.

Situated in the middle of the downtown Monument Circle roundabout, the monument was built between 1888 and 1901, and dedicated in 1902. It was designed to honor Hoosiers who served in the Civil War. It was later expanded to commemorate Hoosiers who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish-American War, and the Frontier Wars.

Standing 284 feet and 6 inches tall, it was the second-tallest monument in the United States when it was completed and is only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty.

The writing was on the wall when Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore requested a trade from the team in April, but it still hit hard when the team couldn’t find a trade partner and released him last Thursday.

Purdue baseball is in the midst of one of the program’s most successful seasons ever.

• The Boilermakers (35-15, 18-9 in Big Ten) have won seven of their last eight Big Ten series.

• They sit fifth in the Big Ten entering this weekend’s road series at Iowa to cap the regular season.

• They are firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble with an RPI of 48.

For context, Purdue has only made the NCAA Tournament three times before, doing so in 1987, 2012 and 2018.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Purdue University Is Established (1869)

This week in Indiana history we are celebrating Purdue University, which was established this week in 1869. It was named after John Purdue, a wealthy industrialist from Lafayette who was the university’s first benefactor. Classes officially began five years later in 1874 with six instructors and 39 students.

Today, Purdue has swelled to over 57,000 students (the largest university in the state), and has one of the highest-ranked engineering programs in the country. Fun fact: Astronauts (and moon-walkers) Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Gene Cernan all went to Purdue, giving the university the nickname “Cradle of Astronauts.”

The next time you’re passing through West Lafayette for a basketball game (where the Boilermakers are one of the best programs in the country), or if you’re just wanting to visit the campus, Purdue University is a gem in the state of Indiana.

🎧 How Can a Fast-Growing Town Keep Its Identity? 🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Zionsville mayor John Stehr, who has prioritized the city's small-town identity despite its population more than doubling since 2010.

A former TV journalist of 42 years and longtime WTHR anchor, Stehr was elected as the mayor of Zionsville in 2023 after running on better communication, civility, and responsible growth. He recalls his broadcasting path from Pittsburgh through multiple markets, his view of news, and why he left as media economics and opinion pressures increased.

John explains how serving on the parks board revealed communication gaps that motivated his campaign, including knocking on over 5,000 doors and focusing on listening.

As mayor, his priorities include improving traffic and emergency access near the Brick Street area with a planned double-roundabout realignment, managing rapid population growth while preserving Zionsville's charming character, supporting housing needs, and backing community projects like parks improvements, a youth advisory council, and a Watch Us Farm initiative for adults with developmental disabilities.

Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral Train Stops in Indianapolis (1865)

This week in Indiana history, we look back to 1865 when Hoosiers all across the state mourned the death of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. His funeral train stopped in Indianapolis where he lay in state at the Indiana Statehouse, allowing thousands to the chance to pay their respects from early morning until late at night. The train then continued on to Michigan City, Chicago, and eventually Springfield, Illinois where he was buried.

The moment in Indianapolis was deeply personal for many Hoosiers. Lincoln lived in southern Indiana from age 7 to 21 and later led the country into and out of the Civil War. He symbolized hope and perseverance in his successful effort to preserve the Union.

Bobcats in Indiana

An Owen County resident recently spotted a bobcat in their yard and posted the video on Reddit. Dozens of Hoosiers then shared their own bobcat sightings, sparking a debate about what Indiana should do with its growing bobcat population.

Baseball Season in the Hoosier State

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Don Mattingly is Born in Evansville (1961)

Don Mattingly, who spent his entire baseball career with the New York Yankees, was born in Evansville on April 20, 1961. He is regarded as one of the greatest defensive first basemen in the history of the game.

Mattingly played for Reitz Memorial High School and led them to a state title and perfect 30-0 season in 1978, followed by 29 more consecutive victories in 1979 before they lost in the state finals to Logansport. He was offered a scholarship to play at Indiana State, but he was selected by the Yankees in the 19th round of the 1979 MLB Draft and never looked back. 

Mattingly had a phenomenal career with the Yankees. He won the American League batting title in 1984, earned six straight All-Star honors from 1984-89, was AL MVP in 1985, took home three Silver Slugger awards from 1985-87, and racked up nine Gold Gloves from 1985-89 and 1991-94. He holds the Major League record for most grand slams in a single season with six.

Mattingly later served as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011-15, winning National League West Division titles in his final three seasons. He then went on to manage the Miami Marlins from 2016-22.

2026 Kelly Cup Playoffs: Fort Wayne Komets vs. Indy Fuel

It’s an all-Indiana, I-69 battle in the Division Semifinals of the 2026 Kelly Cup Playoffs, featuring the Central Division regular season champion Fort Wayne Komets (45-17-10) against the No. 4 seed Indy Fuel (34-27-11).

The Fuel won their regular-season finale on Saturday but still needed help on Sunday — a Komets win vs. Kalamazoo — to make the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Fort Wayne came through with a victory, giving its I-69 rival a dose of Hoosier hospitality before their playoff meeting. (ECHL)

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Abe Lincoln Assassinated (1865)

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, but you could argue that it was Indiana that made him. From 1816 to 1830, young Abe grew up in Spencer County, arriving at age 7 and leaving at 21. He was raised near Little Pigeon Creek in a log cabin, where he lost his mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln to milk sickness in 1818. It was there where he learned to split rails and developed the qualities that would later define his presidency.

When the nation learned on the morning of April 15, 1865, that President Lincoln had died from an assassin's bullet, Indiana mourned a president and neighbor. Hoosiers lined the streets of Indianapolis weeks later as his funeral train passed through.

Today, Lincoln State Park in Lincoln City preserves the land where he came of age. Indiana wasn’t just the home of Lincoln's childhood — it helped create the man who saved the Union.

The Indianapolis Colts and veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II mutually agreed to find the nine-year pro and one-time Pro Bowler a new home via trade. Moore II has played in 132 games (111 starts) for the Colts since going undrafted and signing with them in September 2017, snagging 21 interceptions along the way. (Get IN. Sports)

The Indiana Fever made a wave of moves in free agency last weekend, including the signing of three-time WNBA All-Star Kelsey Mitchell to a 1-year, $1.4 million supermax contract, and bringing back fan favorites Lexie Hull, Sophie Cunningham and Damiris Dantas, among others. Then during the WNBA Draft this week, they selected South Carolina guard Raven Johnson with the No. 10 overall pick. Johnson is a tenacious on-ball defender who was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Gamecocks to a national title game appearance. (Indiana Fever)

In 1928 during the tuberculosis crisis, Jameson Camp opened its doors to give Indianapolis children a breath of fresh air, giving them a clean, safe escape from the city. A century later, that same spirit of care and commitment is being met with a major investment in the future.

Earlier this week, Jameson Camp was awarded a $3,000,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Capital Project Initiative for Residential Youth Camps. This grant pairs with a $1,000,000 Lilly Endowment grant Jameson Camp received in December 2025.

The funding will be put to work with three new cabins added to the existing camp circle, along with a staff lodge. Beyond new construction, the grant will support infrastructure, safety, efficiency, and accessibility improvements across the Jameson Camp campus over the next five years. (Get Indiana)

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Palm Sunday Tornadoes (1965)

On April 11, 1965, one of the deadliest natural disasters hit the Hoosier State — the Palm Sunday tornadoes. In total, 47 tornadoes touched down across six different states, with Indiana being the hardest hit. 

Communities such as Russiaville, Kokomo, and Elkhart received catastrophic damage, with F4 tornadoes carving a path across the state, wiping out entire communities within minutes. By the time the storm had subsided, 137 Hoosiers lost their lives and over 1,200 were injured. In true Hoosier fashion, communities came together quickly and rebuilt almost immediately after the storm.

The tragedy exposed major gaps in weather forecasting throughout the state. At the time, tornado alerts were limited and communication was slow. In addition, major advancements were made with weather broadcasting systems, leading to the high-tech weather systems we have today.

Nashville Defends Small Town Showdown Championship

In sports there are dynasties that come and go. In a competition where 64 small towns across the state in Indiana compete for bragging rights and a $1,000 bar tab in the Small Town Showdown, Nashville showed it may be a small town dynasty as the best in Indiana once again.

No, Get Indiana didn’t decide the outcomes — they were all determined by followers voting on Nate Spangle’s Instagram story. In fact, it was Nashville over Greensburg in the finals again, meaning Hoosiers truly have an understanding of the best small towns in the state.

Final Four Weekend Recap

Braylon Mullins scored 15 points in UConn’s semifinal win over Illinois, but Mullins and the Huskies went cold against Michigan in the national championship game, giving the Wolverines a 69-63 victory. Terre Haute-born and Eastern Greene High School graduate Dusty May is the head coach of Michigan and has them primed to being a national title contender for the foreseeable future. (ESPN)
