First Parke County Covered Bridge Festival Is Held (1957)

The first Parke County Covered Bridge Festival took place in 1957, created to celebrate the county's 31 historic covered bridges and to unite local communities. Originally organized by a group of local women, the inaugural event was a small, three-day gathering attended by approximately 250 people.

Since then, the festival has expanded significantly into a major 10-day annual event held every October across nine Parke County communities. Today, it stands as the largest festival in Indiana and one of the largest in the United States, drawing over two million visitors each year. The modern festival features dozens of vendors, local arts and crafts, guided tours of various towns, and showcases of local craftsmanship. While it has grown massively in scale, the festival continues to honor the heritage, spirit, and community focus of the original 1957 celebration.

How Indiana Celebrated Caitlin Clark’s First Nike Shoe

On the same day Caitlin Clark’s first Nike shoe dropped globally, the Indiana Fever were eliminated from the WNBA playoffs in a winner-take-all Game 3 in Las Vegas. But that didn’t slow down the shoe celebration in Indiana.

The Fever loss also allowed Clark to be the guest picker on College Gameday in Iowa City, where her Iowa Hawkeyes fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes 31-14.

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Craig Mince, president of the Athenaeum Foundation, about the Athenaeum (often known as the Rathskeller) and its evolution from Das Deutsche Haus, founded by pro-democracy German Turner gymnasts committed to "sound mind, sound body."

Craig explains the building's 1894 east wing (gym, Rathskeller) and 1897 west wing (parlors, ballroom, 400-seat theater), its open membership model, and its role in early physical education training.

Our conversation covers name changes during anti-German sentiment, long-running German heritage events, and how a $6 million Lilly Endowment gift led to forming the nonprofit foundation in 1991 to save the building.

Craig details today's operations, including the Turner Gymnasium with 900+ members, Coat Check Coffee, theater restoration plans, and major events like St. Paddy's Day and Germanfest, and shares local ghost stories and overnight paranormal hunts.

First Train Rolls Into Indianapolis From Madison (1847)

On Oct. 1, 1847, the first train rolled into Indianapolis on the newly completed line from Madison, connecting the capital city to the Ohio River. The Madison & Indianapolis Railroad was Indiana’s earliest major rail line and gave Indy a direct link to trade from the river, opening the door to goods that had previously required slower travel on land and helping transform the capital into a growing hub of trade and industry.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

United States Grand Prix Held at IMS (2000)

Globally, Formula 1 is the most watched motorsport on the planet, and in 2000, an F1 race was finally held at the most famous race track on the planet — Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A little background… for 11 years from 1950 to 1960, the Indy 500 was a points-paying race on the F1 calendar. F1 then raced at other circuits around the country until 1991, when low attendance forced them to not race in the U.S. for the next decade until they agreed to return to Indianapolis for the 2000 F1 season. An FIA Grade 1 track was built in the track’s infield, while still including parts of the iconic oval.

The race was won by one of the greatest racers in the history of the series, Michael Schumacher, who won by 12 seconds despite spinning on the final lap of the race. He eventually ended the season as the Formula 1 World Champion, his third championship out of an eventual seven total. Given the popularity that F1 has reached in recent years, we hope to see them return to the Racing Capital of the World here soon!

Harland “Colonel” Sanders Is Born in Henryville (1890)

This week in Indiana history, we are talking about Harland Sanders, the founder and creator of the fast food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Yes, the founder of KFC actually grew up a Hoosier. His father died when he was young, so he learned how to cook out of necessity when he stepped up in the kitchen to feed his younger siblings. 

Business success was not instant… Sanders spent decades working grueling jobs in southern Indiana and failed at many different businesses. It wasn’t until he reached his 50s that his 11 herbs and spices recipe turned Kentucky Fried Chicken into one of the most recognizable food brands in the world. 

Not only did the restaurant become globally known, but Sanders himself became its most recognizable spokesperson and brand ambassador, donning a white coat and appearing in many commercials for the restaurant, where he was affectionately known as “Colonel” Sanders to this day.

September Is Hunger Action Month

Take action to end hunger in the United States this September during Hunger Action Month. According to data recently released by Feeding America, 163,870 people in Marion County (nearly 17% of the population) faced food insecurity. The Alexander, Autograph Collection in Indianapolis (333 S. Delaware St.) is hosting a canned food drive benefiting Second Helpings, a community kitchen and nonprofit in Indianapolis that fights hunger and food waste.

Canned food donations can be made at The Alexander through Sunday, Sept. 13. Plus, there’s a special cocktail exclusively available to those who donate. After dropping off donations, guests will receive a ticket they can take to Plat 99 to redeem for a Second Chance Sour, a cocktail inspired by a New York Sour with an Indiana twist.

Week 3 of Indiana high school football featured two matchups of top five teams - #4 Center Grove vs. #5 Carmel in 6A and #3 Indianapolis Bishop Chatard vs. #5 Roncalli in 4A.

The Center Grove-Carmel meeting was their first on the gridiron since 2022, and it lived up to the billing with CG prevailing 36-34. The Trojans led 21-20 at halftime and 33-20 after three quarters of play but needed a two-point conversion stop with one minute remaining to prevent the Greyhounds from tying the game. (WTHR)

In the 4A bout, Bishop Chatard scored 35 unanswered points, including 28 in the second half, to put away Roncalli 42-14. Trojans wideout Cam Harden hauled in three touchdown receptions. The Trojans beat the Royals in the regular season last fall, but Roncalli had the last laugh with a big win in the sectional final. Don’t be surprised if these two teams meet again later this fall. 🎧 Why 1 in 7 Hoosiers Are Food Insecure  🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Fred Glass, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and former Indiana University athletic director and government leader, about how growing up in his father's Indianapolis tavern shaped his empathy and perspective.

Glass looks back on the turning points of his career, including DC internships with Birch Bayh, law and clerkship decisions, serving in Governor Evan Bayh's office, leading the Capital Improvement Board through efforts that helped secure Lucas Oil Stadium and convention center expansion, and helping Indianapolis win a Super Bowl bid.

He also describes rebuilding the culture and facilities of IU Athletics and the difficult decisions of firing coaches.

Now at Gleaners, Glass explains the organization's large-scale food distribution model, its nationwide reach, and argues food insecurity is driven by poverty, rising housing and grocery costs, stagnant wages, and declining support. He urges volunteering and donations to help address hunger affecting about one million Hoosiers.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

The Beatles Perform at the Indiana State Fair (1964)

This week in Indiana history we revisit The Beatles’ performance in Indianapolis in 1964. They performed in the Circle City in the midst of their legendary first North American Tour. John, Paul, George, and Ringo held two sold-out shows in front of 30,000 total people at the Indiana State Fair, first inside the coliseum and a second in front of the Grandstand, and it was their only concert appearance in the Hoosier State.

The band arrived by chartered plane and were escorted to the coliseum by police motorcycles. The lucky fans who got tickets paid between $3 and $5 to see the boys burst through a 12-song set, which was difficult to hear with the primitive sound system and screaming teenage fans.

Through the chaos, the performance has become important to Hoosier lore, as The Beatles are now considered to be one of the most influential bands in the history of music, despite the fact that they broke up just six years later.

🎧 He Bought a Restaurant at 23… They Now Own One of Indiana’s Biggest Restaurant Groups  🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Eddie Sahm, second-generation restaurateur and co-owner of Sahm's Hospitality Group, to discuss growing a family-run Indiana restaurant and catering company across central Indiana.

Eddie traces the business from his father Ed Sahm's first Fishers location in 1986, his early work and Purdue hospitality education, and decision at 23 to buy Sahm's Place with an SBA loan, rebuild it through craft beer, streamlined operations, and community events, then sell it back into the company in 2016.

He explains scaling into Big Lug Canteen and brewing for margin control, the pivot from Liter House to Half Liter BBQ during COVID, and building "everyday" value-driven community spaces. He also covers management-contract work at Turner's, upcoming openings, and real estate and lease discipline.

Michael Jackson Is Born (1958)

Today we celebrate one of the greatest music artists to ever live… Michael Jackson, who was born in Gary, Indiana this week in 1958. The talent he possessed was no secret, and he fronted the Jackson 5, a band featuring him and four of his brothers. When he was 11 years old, the band signed with Motown Records, receiving international fame in the process.

Michael eventually became a solo artist, and he sold over 500 million records (no, that’s not a typo). His album Thriller became the best selling album of all time, and his music continues to be listened to by millions of people worldwide.

Week 1 of the Indiana high school football season is in the books, and while there were big wins across the state, we’ve circled four as statement victories.

In a rematch of last year’s 4A state championship game that saw Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger defeat Roncalli 36-29, Dwenger again prevailed — this time in triple overtime — 15-14.

In the Region, Munster snapped a 10-game skid vs. Lake Central in a 37-35 nail-biter.

In the Indy metro, back-to-back 6A state champion Brownsburg extended its winning streak to 20 with a convincing 48-25 victory over Lawrence North. LN wideout Monshun Sales, a preseason favorite to win Indiana Mr. Football and IU commit, was held to two receptions for 12 yards.

And in another massive 6A matchup, Warren Central scored late to knock off Center Grove, 20-14.

🎧 How Inmate Handlers Train Service Dogs That Change Lives  🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Jillian Ashton, president and CEO of the Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN), Indiana's only accredited service dog organization through Assistance Dogs International, during International Assistance Dog Week.

Ashton explains how ICAN trains service dogs to support children, adults, and veterans with mobility and psychiatric needs, and how dogs can serve as a social bridge in public. She details ICAN's unique model of training dogs primarily in Indiana correctional facilities, including two-week in-prison team training where inmate handlers transfer skills to clients. ICAN places about 20 dogs per year, with roughly a 50% graduation rate, and it costs about $30,000 to train a dog over two years; veterans receive dogs at no charge.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

Benjamin Harrison Is Born (1833)

This week in Indiana history, Benjamin Harrison, the only president who claimed Indiana as his home base, was born. Originally born near North Bend, Ohio and the grandson of William Henry Harrison (the ninth U.S. president), Benjamin eventually moved to Indianapolis where he established himself as a prominent attorney.

In 1881, Harrison became a member of the U.S. Senate before running for president in 1888. He lost the popular vote but won the electoral college. His term ran from March 4, 1889 to March 4, 1893. During that stretch, his biggest accomplishment was signing the Sherman Antitrust Act, which limited monopolies and helped stop businesses from working together to control trade.

Though he was only president for one term, we are proud to call President Harrison a Hoosier. In 1951, his home in Indianapolis opened as a museum, and it is currently open for tours throughout the week. It joins the Reagan Library as the only presidential memorials that serve as polling places on election day.

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Scott Dorsey, former CEO/co-founder of ExactTarget and currently the managing partner at High Alpha, about his move from Chicago to Indianapolis to start ExactTarget and build email marketing software with co-founders Peter McCormick and Chris Baggott.

ExactTarget originated in a Greenfield, Indiana strip mall, where Baggott identified the need while running a dry cleaner. 📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

World War II Ends (1945)

This week in Indiana history, we revisit one of the greatest international conflicts in the history of mankind and the Hoosiers who fought in it. World War II ended when the Japanese officially surrendered to the allied forces on Aug. 14, 1945.

Some 338,000 Indiana men and 118,000 Indiana women fought in the war. By the end of the conflict, 13,370 Indiana servicemen were killed. Not only that, but most of the major industries in the state converted their products to military production. For example, South Bend’s Studebaker plant produced military trucks, and Eli Lilly produced massive amounts of penicillin and plasma donations.

All in all, World War II affected the vast majority of the country, and Indiana was no different. (Indiana Historical Bureau)

Purdue University, the Purdue Research Foundation, and the Archaeological Legacy Institute recently announced the Taraia Object Expedition. 🎙 On today's show I sat down with Kevin Murphy, executive vice president and CEO of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, about his non-traditional rise from actuary to leading a 1,600-person organization serving all 92 Indiana counties.

Murphy shares his educational journey from Franklin College to earning math master's at Miami of Ohio, the rigorous actuarial exam process while he was working, and how a Safeco consolidation led him to join Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance in 2000.

He explains the company's origins in 1934 to address affordable farm insurance, how it also serves non-farm customers, and its structure under Indiana Farm Bureau with related legal entities.

Murphy shares his take on agent models, why insurance sales is really about education and advocacy, and stepping in as interim CEO in April 2020. He also talks about following a predecessor, hitting the road to listen across Indiana, and using AI to gain efficiency without losing the local, human touch.

📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

The First Brickyard 400 Race Is Held (1994)

Indiana is the home of racing, between the seemingly endless amount of local race tracks across the state, and of course the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indianapolis had almost exclusively held just one race per year — the Indianapolis 500 — for almost eight decades. Locals feared that adding more races at the speedway would ruin the prestige of the track. 

That all changed when NASCAR held the first Brickyard 400 race in 1994. Any fears about the track losing prestige were quickly erased… the race was an instant hit. It featured the largest crowd in NASCAR history, as well as the largest purse in NASCAR history at the time of $3.2 Million.

The race was won by Jeff Gordon, who grew up in nearby Pittsboro, Indiana. It was only his second career win and thrust the-then 23-year-old phenom into superstardom, where he eventually won four Cup Series championships and is considered one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

With the help of Indiana University’s Rural Placemaking Studio, public spaces in communities across Indiana are being enriched. The program involves IU students who work with rural communities to provide designs and price estimates for the projects. Now in its third year, the studio has partnered with 25 organizations across 19 of Indiana’s 92 counties on projects.

🎧 They Bet Everything on a Restaurant Everyone Said Would Fail  🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Indiana entrepreneurs Mark and Lauren Weghorst, founders of central Indiana's fast-growing seafood restaurant Slapfish, which has its original location inside Broccoli Bill's in Noblesville, one on Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis, one in Fishers at The Yard, and another in Carmel's Market District. A fifth location is set to open this fall in Indy's Meridian-Kessler neighborhood.

Mark shares how a failed tenant restaurant space at the family's Broccoli Bill's grocery store led him to Google "fast casual seafood concepts" and pursue Slapfish. The Weghorsts risked everything while raising three young kids, from receiving an SBA loan to emptying their savings and using their home as collateral.

They describe the frantic early days of opening in 2019, a packed grand opening, learning operations with little experience, and staying open through COVID during Lent, which ultimately boosted carryout and delivery growth. As the broader Slapfish brand contracted, they expanded locally and built a commissary prep model for consistency, all while focusing on community involvement and better family balance.

Jim Davis Is Born (1945)

This week in Indiana history we celebrate Jim Davis, the founder of the comic strip Garfield, who turns 81 this week. Born on a farm in Fairmount, Davis grew up with many animals, including nearly 25 cats. He used this experience as inspiration to create the most famous cat in America.

After attending Ball State University, Davis began working in advertising and cartooning, where he came up with the idea of an orange cat who is very lazy, hates Mondays, and loves lasagna.

Debuting in 1978, Garfield quickly became a national sensation, spanning books, movies, and TV shows. Davis’ journey from a small-town Indiana farm to international fame inspires Hoosiers of all ages across the Hoosier State.

Nate and Will survived five days/four nights canoeing 84 miles from Muncie to Indianapolis on the White River. Was Nate in his element? No, but has he ever backed down from a challenge or something outside his comfort zone? Also no. What about Will? Yes, he’s a true outdoorsman and honestly didn’t want the trip to end. Ever.

But the coolest part of it all? They captured the entire journey while learning the history of the White River and its resurgence in recent years. They faced adversity, but the good times far outweighed the bad. The video drops later today on YouTube… don’t miss it!

Drybread explains how Edinburgh Main Street was founded in 2025 by residents, business owners, regional partners, town officials, and downtown stakeholders, and is applying for the Office of Community and Rural Affairs Downtown Affiliate Network, working toward state accreditation for Main Street. They're using lessons from mentor communities like Wabash and Rushville, where historic theaters helped catalyze revitalization.

Drybread outlines priorities for Edinburgh including increasing storefront occupancy, attracting a strong mix of retail and services, leveraging partnerships across three counties, and building a downtown plaza with an amphitheater supported by grants and local tourism funding while promoting assets beyond the outlet mall, including the Pixy Theatre and Indiana's largest tenderloin at Edinburgh Diner.
