How do Sussex beaches water quality compare?

💩 Two Sussex beaches have been labelled “no-go” for swimming after being rated “poor” – the lowest possible DEFRA water quality classification. DEFRA assesses bathing waters as Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor, based on four years of Environment Agency tests for bacteria linked to health risks, including E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Nationally, most English bathing waters perform well: as of November 2025, 87% are rated Excellent or Good, and 93% meet at least the minimum standard. However, Worthing Beach House (near Splashpoint) has retained its Poor rating from 2024, and Aldwick beach in Bognor is also rated Poor, with DEFRA advising against swimming at both. Local councils say they are working to improve water quality, signage and public awareness, citing citizen science initiatives and campaigns such as the Yellow Fish project to reduce pollution entering the sea. Thankfully the Brighton beaches all ranked Good or Excellent. Latest Results.

Super low tides this weekend

🌊 If you can pop down early doors or after work once you’ve picked the kids up then there’s going to be the joy of sand on the beach for us Brightonians - a rare treat. Sunday and Monday it also coincides with sunset there or thereabouts so expect every man and his granny to be down there snapping away for the ‘perfect’ shot. Anyway it’s a great excuse to get to the beach, throw your shoes off and feel the sand beneath your toes. Heaven! Enjoy.

Dates for RNLI Lifeguard Patrols on beaches

🛟 If you’re heading down to the beaches over the coming weeks bear in mind the water’s still pretty nippy at sub 11° and the stone shelf drops away steeply so you can quickly be out of your depth. The awesome RNLI manage the beach lifeguard service in Brighton (donate here if you have a few ££) but duty doesn’t kick off until 24th May and runs until 7th September. There are plenty of information boards along the seafront so in the meantime have a quick read even if you’re confident water baby as conditions differ from one beach to the next. UK’s Biggest Cocktail Festival in 2026

🍹 Awesome news for Brightonians with The Brighton Cocktail Festival returning for its second year from 18–27 September 2026, and thanks to London Cocktail Week moving to March 2027, it’s now the UK’s biggest cocktail event of the year. 🥳 Over 50 Brighton and Hove bars (full list here) will serve more than 150 bespoke drinks, with prices at £6 for alcoholic and £4 for alcohol-free cocktails. Ticket holders get access to special events, plus discounts on hotels, restaurants and cocktail ingredients.

Venues include Cut Your Wolf Loose, Bar Valentino, Apiary, Helm and The Grand’s Victoria Bar. A new Brighton Cocktail Festival app built for this year lets users discover bars, build custom cocktail trails on a live map (awesome), and bookmark, rate and review drinks and venues. Time to Have Your Say on ‘Better Brighton & Hove’ Funding

💰 Residents in every Brighton & Hove ward can now vote on projects to improve their local area, funded through the council’s Better Brighton & Hove Fund, which uses money from developer contributions. After a huge consultation on the Your Voice platform last year, residents submitted 930 ideas for spending £750,000, including new play areas, community gardens, street art, accessibility upgrades, greener spaces and safety measures.

Councillors and officers have shortlisted only those ideas that meet the fund’s criteria and are feasible. Residents can now pick up to five favourite projects in their ward on Your Voice until the deadline on the 5th May. Their choices will guide councillors on which schemes best match local priorities and offer good value for money. Each ward will be assessed separately, with results shared as decisions are made, and successful projects will be funded and start later this year. Submit Your Response and help shape your neighbourhood.

Electric Buses Rolled Out in the City

🚌 Brighton & Hove has launched its first fully electric double-decker buses, with 16 new vehicles now running on Route 7 as the start of a transition to a fully electric fleet. The project is funded by £5.2m from the government’s ZEBRA 2 scheme, £600,000 from the council, and major investment from Brighton & Hove Buses to upgrade Conway Street Depot for charging. In one of the UK’s highest bus-use cities, the switch to quieter, cleaner buses is a significant step for air quality and everyday travel. View the electric bus teaser video.

20,000 Take Part in Marathon Weekend

🏃‍♀️ A record number ran this weekend with approximately 14,000 runners taking part in the Brighton Marathon, setting off from Preston Park after Rugby World Cup winner Jess Breach started the race. Sam Cook from Horsham won the men’s marathon for the second year in a row in 2:25, while Amy Harris won the women’s race in 2:49 and said she felt “very proud” and boosted by constant crowd support.

Braille artist Clarke Reynolds, who is visually impaired, completed the course using smart glasses and volunteers’ guidance, dedicating his run to challenging limits placed on visually impaired people. Spectators Emma Kruszynski and Jack Penfold, previous Brighton Marathon runners, praised the city’s “amazing atmosphere” and said they loved cheering on both friends and strangers. See Full Results

Brighton’s First Italian Street Party

🍕 Brighton will host its first Italian Street Party on 2nd May 2026 in Jubilee Square, launching the Brighton Italian Festival with a free, all-day piazza-style celebration of food, music and DJ sets. The family-friendly event opens a month-long programme including theatre, a children’s clown show and a launch night with international performers.

Highlights range from a jazz evening with vocalist Betty Accorsi and opera on Brighton Palace Pier, to the “Spaghetti Disco” where guests eat pasta then dance. The festival closes on 31 May with 20 Sicilian folk singers and Sicilian street food. Extra events include a pottery workshop and regional Italian dining nights with local restaurants. It’s firmly in our calendar.

Redevco sells Brighton Lanes parade for circa £50m

One of Europe’s largest privately-owned real estate managers, has completed the sale of the Hanningtons mixed-use retail-led scheme in Brighton to The Baron Homes Corporation. Hanningtons’ retail element spans 71,119 sq ft and is fully let to occupiers including Oliver Bonas, Joe & The Juice, White Stuff, Flying Tiger, Lululemon, Pret A Manger, The White Company, Watches of Switzerland, and Charlotte Tilbury. This recent sale show the value of our shopping district with its mix of independents and national stores. Lucky us!

Artists Open Houses in Brighton Announced

🎨 Artists Open Houses Brighton 2026 returns this May for its 45th and most expansive year yet, with 197 venues and over 1,000 artists turning Brighton and Hove into a city-wide gallery across four weekends - 2–4, 9–10, 16–17 and 23–25 May. Visitors step into private homes, studios and unusual spaces – from haylofts and coffee roasters to a historic Gertrude Jekyll garden – making the festival as much about exploration as art.

Highlights include a Fatboy Slim collaboration with Art of Pepita, behind-the-scenes access to Plunge Creations’ prop workshop, cutting-edge BioArt made with bacteria and DNA, inflatable sculptures by Mandeep Dillon, Boogaloo Stu’s talking ceramics, and work by a Great Pottery Throwdown finalist. Spread across every neighbourhood, from seafront studios to Kemptown and Hove, the festival offers multi-generational shows, interactive installations and pop-up events such as flash tattoos, with most venues free to enter. Construction of 306 Affordable Homes Underway

👷🏽 Construction has begun on 306 low-cost homes on the former Sackville Road Trading Estate in Hove, delivered by Homes for Brighton & Hove, a partnership between the city council and Hyde. The development will provide 183 council-rent homes for people on the housing register and 123 shared ownership homes. Designed to be energy efficient, the homes will feature solar panels, subsidised sustainable travel options, car club bays, EV charging and extensive cycle parking. Landscaped courtyards, play areas and community growing spaces are also planned, with residents gaining direct access to shops and offices in the neighbouring Hove Central development. Ali Jay Takes Over the Reins of Funny Women

😆 Local comic and promoter, Ali Jay is taking over from Kate McGann as regional producer of Funny Women Live in Brighton at Komedia from April. McGann reflects on two rewarding years of curating diverse line-ups and supporting emerging talent. Founded in 2002 by Lynne Parker in response to sexism in the comedy industry, Funny Women has grown into a major platform offering live shows, training, and the influential Funny Women Awards, which have helped launch acts like Zoe Lyons, Lorna Rose Treen, and Thanyia Moore. Funny Women Live in Brighton, the organisation’s longest-running and most successful night, runs monthly and showcases female-identifying and non-binary comedians.

Ali Jay, who previously co-produced and hosted the pioneering LGBTQ comedy show “Screamers” at Komedia in the 1990s, says returning to work with Funny Women and Komedia feels like coming full circle. More info & tickets Funny Women @ Komedia

Comics & Beers Event

🍺 “Comics and Beer: Horror Comics Spooktacular” takes place 12–5pm on Saturday 18 April 2026 at Haus On The Hill in Hanover, Brighton, with free entry. Expect 10,000+ comics from 50p, a “pay what you like” graphic novel stall from editor/writer Tim Pilcher, and creator ILYA selling his latest book, Romo the Wolf Boy. Nevs Coleman plans to bring his zine Titti Graffiti #2, and the Smallest Bookshop in Brighton will be selling a wide range of sci‑fi books.

There’ll be comics from all eras, plus mags, fanzines, artwork – and it’s all in a pub. Full Event Details

Local School Run Safety Enforcement

🚘 From September, Brighton & Hove City Council will pilot camera enforcement on three School Streets near Queen’s Park, Hangleton and West Hove / Hove Junior schools. The cameras will enforce existing restrictions on motor vehicles during drop-off and pick-up times, aiming to cut traffic, dodgy parking and boost walking, cycling and scooting.

Volunteers and school staff will be freed up as the council takes on enforcement, and nearby residents will get full info before the new school year. School Streets Schemes

🌍 Earth Day Two Weeks Away

An upcoming Earth Day event will showcase Brighton & Hove’s coastal protection work. On Thursday 16 April at the King Alfred Leisure Centre ballroom, residents can learn about the Brighton Marina and River Adur Coastal Defence scheme, including a new groyne field and shingle beach extension designed to reduce flooding, erosion and climate change impacts.

Local schoolchildren will attend an Immersive Education Event featuring a wave tank, a wood station and a virtual visit to Guyana’s forest. An evening session for residents (5–7pm) will provide project updates, guest speakers, an immersion tent experience, wood samples, and information on partnerships with community groups such as Pedal People, Park Run and Men in Sheds. Councillor Trevor Muten and Van Oord’s Managing Director Paul Hesk stress the project’s role in protecting homes, businesses and inspiring future environmental advocates. Book A Session

🌳 Photographers Grab Your Cameras

📸 It’s time to start snapping people as CPRE Sussex’s annual Tree Festival has launched its third “I Love This Tree Because …” photographic competition, inviting people across Sussex to celebrate special trees. Open to all skill levels, entrants submit a photo of a Sussex tree plus a short explanation of why they love it. Images can feature anything from dramatic landscape trees to childhood climbing favourites or everyday street trees.

The competition aims to highlight the beauty, diversity and personal significance of trees, encouraging people to look more closely at nature. The submission deadline is 11.59pm on Thursday 28 May 2026. How to Enter 

🍝 Brighton Italian Festival

The Brighton Italian Festival returns in May after attracting more than 1,000 people to its sell-out debut last year. The second edition promises to be bigger and more vibrant, celebrating Italian culture across Brighton through music, theatre, food, opera and family events.

Local partners Pizza 500 and Crocodile Café will run a culinary “Giro d’Italia” with changing regional menus each week. The festival aims to be accessible, with tickets from £5 and a £50 “One for All” pass giving entry to every event. Comedy Festival & Komedia Team Up

😆 Brighton Dome Comedy Festival runs 16th – 25th October and, this year, teams up with Komedia for a bumper 10-day programme across both venues. Expect TV names, podcast stars, cult favourites and family-friendly shows, plus mixed-bill nights to suit all tastes.

Headliners at Brighton Dome include Tom Davis, Maisie Adam, Sam Campbell, Nish Kumar and a live recording of The Blindboy Podcast, with all Dome shows live captioned. Full Listings Here. Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre host acts like Laura Smyth, Larry Dean, Jazz Emu, Rosie Holt, Stevie Martin and Celya AB, plus youth comedy workshops and a recovery-focused clowning course with Spymonkey.

Komedia’s Basement and Studio feature Phil Ellis, Solve-Along-Murder-She-Wrote, Aurie Styla, Alfie Brown, Jordan Brookes, Robin Ince, Joanna Neary, Sergi Polo, Amy Matthews, Funny Women Live and Sooz Kempner, with more acts and family shows to be announced.

Blind Runner to Use Meta AI Glasses for Marathon

🏃 Blind artist Clarke “Mr Dot” Reynolds plans to run the Brighton Marathon in what may be a world first: guided remotely by volunteers using AI technology. Wearing Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses linked to the Be My Eyes app, he’ll have strangers from around the world seeing through his glasses and talking him safely round the 26.2-mile course.

Normally used for everyday tasks like finding keys or reading labels, the app will instead help him dodge bins, parked cars and other obstacles while chatting as he runs. Reynolds, who has Retinitis Pigmentosa and describes his sight as like “looking underwater”, hopes the challenge will change perceptions of blindness, showing he’s not a superhero – just someone using tech to live fully. After struggling with a traditional guide in the London Marathon, he’s found remote support lets him run at his own pace, with over 100 volunteers already helping in training. Help Clarke hit his £2000 target for Fight For Sight.

Seafront Secures Support

🏖️ BHCC is starting a new seafront maintenance programme to keep the 13km stretch from Hove Lagoon to Saltdean looking good, safe and accessible for the future. This summer, £280,000 will fund targeted repairs and refurbishment of railings, shelters and benches, plus ongoing cleaning, safety checks and essential promenade repairs. Work will prioritise the areas in worst condition or with the biggest impact on safety and access. A new specialist method for restoring cast-iron railings is being used to give a longer-lasting finish, starting with Hove Prom.

The council is also partnering with contractors and community schemes to restore cucumber benches and shelters, and exploring extra income, including from new beach huts and major projects like Madeira Terrace and A259 works. Councillor Birgit Miller says they can’t fix everything at once, but this funding will noticeably improve parts of the seafront while they seek further support. Much needed along huge swathes of the seafront unfortunately but this is a start nonetheless. More Info on BHCC.

New Local Sparking Rosé in Town

🍷 Everflyht, Brighton’s closest vineyard in Ditchling, has launched Wylde, a new Charmat-method sparkling wine created in response to a disastrous 2024 harvest, when heavy September rain destroyed much of the crop. Instead of facing a year with no wine to sell, viticulturalist Luke Spalding used estate fruit differently, blending grapes from multiple years (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay) into a fresher, more expressive style.

The Charmat method is quicker than the traditional approach Everflyht usually uses, allowing Wylde to be sold at a more accessible £22 a bottle, with free delivery for anyone living within nine miles of the vineyard. Co-founder Ben Ellis says Wylde offers a new way to showcase South Downs fruit alongside England’s classic traditional-method sparkling wines. They also run tours and tasking, so why not pop on over for a little session one afternoon! It’s only 15mins by taxi from Preston Circus.

Bravo Awards 2026 Winners Announced

👏 The 2026 BRAVO Awards Brighton results are out, marking the biggest year yet for the city’s public food awards. A total of 71,285 votes were cast across 18 categories, covering 190 venues and welcoming 33 new entries. Run by Restaurants Brighton, the BRAVOs (Brighton Restaurant Awards Vote Online) are decided entirely by the public – no critics or judging panels, just diners voting for the places they genuinely love. ‘This Girl Can Be Inspired’ Event

🙋🏻‍♀️ On 20 March, the Sussex Cricket Foundation hosted Brighton & Hove City Council’s “This Girl Can – Be Inspired” event at The County Ground for the third year running. Nearly 80 Year 8 and 9 girls from seven local secondary schools attended workshops on health, wellbeing, and physical activity, plus sessions on sports bras (Team PeBe) and being active during menstrual cycles (EmPower Health).

Sussex Women’s Head Coach Alexia Walker, Captain Chiara Green and Physio Alex Myall shared their journeys in sport and highlighted diverse careers in the game. Students also discussed barriers to participation with PE staff, against a backdrop of survey data showing only 15% of secondary-age girls achieve an hour of daily activity, compared to 27% of boys. 11 Beach Huts Up For Sale 

🏖️ Rare opportunity has popped up for Brighton & Hove residents to now bid for one of 11 new beach huts being installed on Hove seafront near Hove Lagoon and Hove Beach Park. Ten huts are being built in gaps on the promenade above Hove Lagoon Watersports, with an 11th replacing a derelict hut nearby.

There’s an open viewing day on Tuesday 31 March from 12–3pm, with more viewings available if needed. Ten huts are on sale for offers over £25,000, and the more established 11th hut is priced at offers over £30,000. Money raised will go towards seafront maintenance (much needed). If this is up your street, offers can be made in writing by Tuesday 7 April and sent to Seafront.lettings@brighton-hove.gov.uk. Brighton Easter Egg Trail is a Go

🐣 Brilliant Brighton is running a free Easter Egg Trail in the city centre, inviting people of all ages to hunt for colourful eggs displayed in shop, café and salon windows. You can collect a trail form from any of the 28 participating businesses or download one here, count the eggs they spot, and submit their total to enter a prize draw for one of three Brighton Gift Cards worth up to £75.

The trail offers a fun way to revisit favourite places, discover new local spots and enjoy the spring atmosphere. It kicked off last Saturday (28th) and runs to Sunday 12th April. Time to get cracking! More Info & Download Form

Valley Gardens Enters Final Phase

🚧 A relief for many, the BHCC says phase three of the Valley Gardens project is due for completion this summer. 🎉 Work will soon begin on new paths and green space in Steine Gardens. Since January, construction at the Aquarium junction has removed the old roundabout and traffic islands, replacing them with a traffic light-controlled junction, safer crossings and wider space for pedestrians.

From 13 April, new traffic islands will be built, with temporary traffic lights in place for up to five weeks while permanent junction lights are installed. During this period, the Marine Parade crossing will stay closed. Councillor Trevor Muten says the new layout will improve traffic flow, make crossings between Steine Gardens and the seafront safer, and thanks residents for their patience during disruption. It’s great news for the area which has been chaos since November 2024 but once completed will make everyone’s lives that little bit better. More Info on Phase 3 from the BHCC

British Summer Time Kicks Off

⏰ It’s here, we can all rejoice - The UK switches to British Summer Time (Daylight Saving Time) at 01:00 GMT on 29 March 2026, when clocks go forward one hour (“spring forward, fall back”). This brings darker early mornings at first but much lighter evenings, with sunset pushed later and days lengthening through spring. Since the spring equinox on 20 March, most of the northern hemisphere gets over 12 hours of daylight, increasing until the summer solstice on 21 June, when northern Scotland sees up to about 19 hours of light.

DST began in Germany in 1916 during World War One to save coal and make better use of daylight, and the UK soon followed with British Summer Time. In World War Two, the UK briefly used “Double Summer Time”, two hours ahead of GMT in summer and one in winter, to maximise daylight for wartime work. Who knew! Anyway, it’s good news all round, as we cal all head down the beach after work / school / nursery etc and enjoy our wonderful city.

Volks Reopens on Saturday

🚂 Volk’s Electric Railway reopens on Saturday 28 March, just in time for Easter, launching its 143rd year of operation. Former TV newsreader and long-time supporter Nicholas Owen will drive the first train, with public services running daily from 10.15am. Residents and visitors can celebrate by riding the world’s oldest operating electric railway along Brighton’s seafront between the Aquarium and Black Rock.

Ahead of reopening, Mayor Amanda Grimshaw met staff undergoing driver training and final testing, praising their passion for preserving this unique piece of the city’s heritage. Manager James Barton said the team is excited to welcome passengers for the 2026 season and to mark the anniversary with Owen at the controls. The little ones will be happy! Book Here

Paris Hilton Performing at Pride?

🎤 Paris Hilton will perform at this year’s Brighton & Hove Pride as the Sunday icon on 2 August, completing the Brighton on the Park line-up. Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes to Hollywood will fill the Legends slot, adding 1980s nostalgia. Other confirmed acts include Jessie J, RuPaul, Self Esteem and Five. Diana Ross is already announced as the Sunday headliner, with Raye headlining Saturday.

Managing director Paul Kemp said this 35th anniversary year feels “incredibly special” and that the line-up showcases talent across generations, promising an amazing experience for Pride-goers. Komedia Wins at 2026 Chortle Awards 

🎭 Brighton’s awesome Komedia scooped three major honours at the 2026 Chortle Awards at London’s Comedy Store. It won ‘Best Comedy Venue (South)’ for a record 18th time and ‘Best Pro Comedy Night (South)’ for its weekly Komedia Comedy Club. New resident show Boast in Show, where comics battle with compliments instead of put-downs, took ‘Best Comedy Format (South)’.

These awards bring Komedia’s Chortle tally to 23 since 2002, recognising flagship nights like Comic Boom and queer/alternative night Down the Hatch. The wins come as venues across the UK face rising closure rates, highlighting how vital thriving spaces like Komedia are to live comedy.

BHCC Getting to Bottom of Holes

🕳️ Brighton & Hove City Council is finally ramping up road and pavement repairs after winter weather caused extra damage. The number of repair teams has jumped from 2 to 10 during March. In January, 1,004 potholes were fixed, rising to 1,374 in February, along with 610 pavement repairs over the two months. Councillor Trevor Muten says roads and pavements are a top priority, acknowledging public frustration and a national backlog caused by years of underinvestment.

The council has committed at least £8.8 million over the next year, including £2.2 million for the most urgent problems, alongside a longer-term maintenance plan to extend road life and prevent potholes forming in the first place. The suspension on my car will be over the moon.

Women’s Rugby Exhibition Kicks Off Today

🏉 A new outdoor exhibition at Brighton & Hove’s Seafront Gallery celebrates women’s rugby as part of the city’s push to become the UK capital for women and girls in sport. Launching Monday 23 March, to coincide with the women’s world cup trophy visit, it features powerful images of players from Hove Rugby Club and the University of Brighton by photographers Bx Webb and Mo Tyrrell. The show supports the Strive ‘25 legacy project and the council’s Sport Lifts Her Higher campaign, which aim to tackle gender gaps in sport and inspire more women and girls to get active. Since the World Cup, over 2,600 women and girls have joined more than 70 local rugby sessions, backed by 20+ clubs and organisations.

The exhibition, part of the city’s 10-year Let’s Get Moving strategy, runs until 26 April between Brighton i360 and the upside-down house.

Olympic Gold Medalist Launches 40th Swimathon

🏊🏽‍♂️ Another swimming legend visited Brighton this week when Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew has launched the 40th annual Swimathon at Sea Lanes, where 30 swimmers took part. The event, now the world’s largest annual pool-based fundraising swim, has involved over 750,000 people and raised more than £55m since 1986.

Swimmers choose distances from 500m to a triple 5km, with 550 pools involved this year, raising money for Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK. Goodhew called swimming “a sport for life”, and long-time participants praised the event, the Brighton pool, and its charitable purpose. And they even managed to score the Brighton sunshine for the event, a feat unto itself.

£9m to be Spent to Keep Bus Fares Affordable for Families

🚌 Good news for families in town this week with Brighton & Hove Council planning to spend around £9m in the next year to improve bus services and keep fares affordable, especially for families, young people and low-income residents. £5.5m will go on fare offers and supporting key and socially necessary routes, plus Breeze Buses to the Downs and longer customer service hours. A further £3.1m will fund accessibility upgrades at stops, better key corridors, express services, cameras to protect bus lanes and strategic hubs like Park & Ride, building on one of the strongest bus networks outside London. The Great British Spring Clean

🦺 It’s time to step up Brighton! Join The Great British Spring Clean this Saturday!

Join our big community tidy up in Kemptown this weekend as part of the Great British Spring Clean, the UK’s largest environmental clean-up. On Saturday from 10:30am–1:30pm, residents and volunteers will litter-pick around Kemptown and St James’s Street, meeting at the new toolchest outside St Mary’s Church. Equipment is provide but you’re welcome to bring your own bags, litter pickers, hi-vis vests. All ages are welcome to come on down and stay for as long or short as you can, every extra pair of hands will be helpful. Help keep the neighbourhood clean and take pride in your local community. Thanks in advance to anyone who comes. Look after your city and your city will look after you. ❤️

King Opens UK’s Newest Nature Reserve

👑 That’s right, we’re not talking about Don, Stephen or Billie Jean, the actual king was in Sussex opening a new nature reserve.

Seven Sisters has been declared England’s newest National Nature Reserve, protecting 1,500 hectares of rare chalk grassland, heath and meadows rich in wildlife such as the chalkhill blue butterfly, skylark and bee orchid. The reserve’s chalk geology forms a vast aquifer supplying clean drinking water and freshwater for wildlife. Part of the South Downs National Park, the dramatic white cliffs and the Cuckmere valley have long inspired writers, artists and filmmakers and attract up to a million visitors a year. Managed by a partnership of local and national bodies, the NNR will balance access with conservation and forms a key milestone in King Charles III’s Series of National Nature Reserves, aimed at restoring nature on a larger, joined-up scale. Volk’s Railway Starts Rolling Next W/E

🚂 Yes, you know Spring is upon us when the electric train starts running again and we risk getting mown down by the world’s slowest train trying to get to the beachfront. I love it really, it’s fab for kids, the oldies or anyone who wants to venture up to Black Rock without walking.

It will reopen on Saturday 28th March in time for Easter, marking its 143rd year - making it the world’s oldest operating electric railway! Former TV newsreader and long‑time supporter Nicholas Owen will drive the first train, with public services running daily from 10:15am. Built in 1883 by Magnus Volk, the much‑loved seafront line runs for about a mile between the Aquarium and Black Rock. Prepare to hang onto your hats for one exhilarating ride.

Brighton Fringe Scoops Share of £1m Funding

🎭 With only 6 weeks to go until it kicks off, its great news to hear Brighton Fringe Festival along with Leeds Heritage Theatres will share in a £1 million Airbnb “Best of British Fund” aimed at boosting local projects and the struggling hospitality sector. They are among more than 25 UK initiatives selected from thousands of applicants to showcase Britain’s “diversity and quirkiness”, alongside events such as Abergavenny Food Festival and Chester’s World Town Crier Tournament.

Brighton Fringe kicks off its 21st festival on 1st May and runs until 31st May, featuring shows including Jonny Woo’s Suburbia and Are You Even Indian?. You Had Me At Whisky

🥃 Finally Brighton is hosting its first whisky festival, Brighton Whisky Weekend, from June 26th to 28th. The main event, featuring over 30 brands, will be held at The Old Market on June 27th. There’ll be plenty of events across town, including dinner pairings, bar takeovers, masterclasses, and unique whisky experiences.

Tickets will be available soon at Brighton Whisky Weekend. Keep an eye out for the full schedule as it becomes available. This is sure to be a winner.

Portslade School Has First Low Carbon School Heating System

⚡️ Peter Gladwin Primary School in Portslade has celebrated the installation of the city’s first fully low carbon heating system, marking a significant step toward sustainability. The school's new heating and hot water system is powered entirely by air source heat pumps, replacing the old gas boilers.

Amazingly this is the first school in Brighton & Hove to fully transition to low carbon heating, projected to cut carbon emissions by about 19 tonnes annually. The project was a collaborative effort involving local expertise and funding from the council, central government, and the Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-op (BHESCO), which also installed a 50kW rooftop solar panel array. The advanced heat pumps and solar panels are designed to reduce energy and water consumption while maintaining optimal temperatures through-out the school. Definitely a step in the right direction to achieving those net zero goals by 2026! 🤞

Brilliant Brighton Easter Egg Trail

🐣 This Easter, Brighton’s BID ‘Brilliant Brighton’ offers a free Easter Egg Trail across the city centre, inviting families and explorers to find colourful Easter eggs hidden in window posters of 28 participating businesses. Participants can collect a trail form to track their findings and submit the total to win Brighton Gift Cards worth up to £75.

The event encourages pottering round the city visiting your favourite spots, discovering new ones, and enjoying the spring atmosphere. Running from March 28th to April 12th, the trail is open to all ages so pop on down and kill some time with the kids egg hunting. More Info on Brilliant Brighton.

Big Swim Attracts 500 Brave Women

🏊🏼‍♀️ Around 1,000 women braved the sea in Sandbanks, Dorset, and Brighton, for the annual Big Swim marking International Women’s Day. The event celebrates women of all ages and backgrounds coming together by the water, many wearing colourful, sparkly outfits and woolly hats. It also raises money for Surfers Against Sewage, highlighting concerns about pollution: organisers checked sewage alerts before the swim, and the charity says millions of hours of sewage discharge and thousands of sickness reports show a growing crisis.

Water companies Southern Water and Wessex Water say they are investing heavily to reduce storm overflows and maintain high bathing water quality. All participants commit to one action to support women in their community, reflecting International Women’s Day’s call for gender equality. Checkout Big Swim for next event. Well done all involved. It was a sunny day but still single digit temps in the sea.

Get Ready for RuPauls Drag Race UK Legends

👯‍♀️ RuPaul’s Drag Race UK favourites Kitty Scott-Claus and Cheryl are hitting the road with their first full-length double act, The Cheryl & Kitty Show, coming to Komedia, Brighton on Tuesday 7 April 2026. Tickets Available

The two-hour cabaret tour runs from 2–22 April across the UK, promising high-camp chaos, show-stopping numbers, roast battles and interactive fun. Drag Race alumni from multiple UK and international seasons, Cheryl and Kitty blend sass, stupidity and campy charm to celebrate friendship, drag and pop culture. Expect reimagined Drag Race moments, gossip, personal stories and plenty of sing-alongs to iconic pop songs, show tunes and ballads, with the queens promising “performances of a lifetime.” Sign me up 😄

Brighton Bags UK’s Top Spot for Pothole Funding

🕳️ A new study shows Brighton & Hove gets more extra pothole-repair funding per mile than any other local authority in England, at £1,547.46 per mile – 33% above the national average of £1,163.80.

Milton Keynes comes second with £1,390.39 per mile, and Cheshire East third with £1,383.43, both about 19% above average. At the bottom of the table, Blackpool receives £961.44 per mile, 17% below the national average, followed by Stoke-on-Trent (£981.24) and Newcastle (£984.31).

Research by Claims.co.uk suggests a North–South divide: nearly half of the ten best-funded areas are in southeast England, where potholes appear more problematic, while almost half of the ten least-funded are in the northeast, where potholes seem less of an issue. Based on the state of Preston Drove and London Road I can see the funding isn’t making its way quickly enough into the roads. I’m surprised more cyclists (me included) don’t have more accidents.🤞

Alice Cooper Brighton Bound

🤘 Devil on My Shoulder, releasing 8 October 2026, is Alice Cooper’s ultimate memoir, crowning six decades as the Godfather of Shock Rock. The book explores the clash between his depraved stage persona and his real life as a sober pastor’s son, sorting truth from decades of myths and “fake news.” Cooper reflects on losing himself in the Alice character and finding his way back.

He’ll bring these stories to life on an eight-date UK tour, including Brighton Dome on 26 October, featuring a guest moderator and audience Q&A.

Deep Cleans May Be Coming To Town

🫧 Councillors will consider introducing overnight deep cleans for Brighton & Hove’s busiest streets this March, aiming to start in May if approved. A new night team would handle jet-washing, graffiti removal and repainting, complementing the existing daytime cleaning service.

Directed by the City Centre Manager and coordinated with businesses and community groups, the scheme seeks visible improvements to the city centre and follows models used in Westminster and European cities. Noise would be managed by rotating locations. Councillor Tim Rowkins says the extra capacity will significantly improve cleanliness in the busy, visitor-heavy city. More Info from BHCC

Runners Raise £300k for Sussex Beacon

🏃‍♀️ Sussex Beacon has set new records at the Brighton Half Marathon, with over 800 Team Beacon runners this year, up from 400 in 2025 and 250 in 2024. Together they raised more than £300,000, triple last year’s £100,000 total, to support people living with HIV and reinstate palliative care services.

CEO Rachel Brett praised the community’s support. Celebrity participants included Olly Alexander, Zoe Lyons, Esther Manito, Dr Tom Crawford, Patrick Monahan, MP Chris Ward, and Gladiators’ Jodie Ounsley and Jamie Christian, with The Traitors’ Amanda Collier cheering on her wife. Amazing result by all runners.

Grand Designs for Less

🏠 Brighton householders interested in making their homes warmer, more efficient and comfortable are invited to a free community event on Wednesday 18 March, 6.30pm, at the Brighton Friends Meeting House. Organised by the local Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) network, the evening focuses on real-life renovation stories rather than theory, with homeowners sharing the challenges, decisions and lessons from their projects.

There’ll be practical discussion on insulation, reducing energy demand and creating healthy living spaces. Robin Hiller of Ecological Building Systems will speak, and the event is supported by Ecological Building Systems and Ecotecture. Attendance is free but booking is required. Register for the Event

Brighton’s Sonay Kartal into Indian Wells Fourth Round

🎾 Sonay Kartal fought back from a set down, while managing a painful back injury, to upset former Australian Open champion Madison Keys 2-6 6-2 6-3 in the Indian Wells third round. The British number two, ranked 54, has now reached the fourth round there for a second time, the first British woman to do so.

Her run follows a breakthrough 2025 season that took her to a career-high of 44. Kartal, who says the win shows the “fighter” in her, will focus on recovery before facing Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina in the last 16. Sonny who trains at the Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club, in Hove reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2025 so we’re all behind her for her match today. Live Scores from Indian Wells

King Alfred Leisure Centre Development Plans

🏊🏽‍♂️ Plans have been unveiled for a new modern sports and leisure centre to replace the ageing King Alfred Leisure Centre on the seafront. Shaped by community feedback, the proposal includes larger fitness facilities, leisure water, a family entertainment zone, better accessibility and an underground car park. The design maximises sea views from the pools, gym and café, and improves landscaping to better link the site with its surroundings.

The existing King Alfred will stay open until the new centre is ready. Residents, businesses and community groups are invited to view the planning application and submit comments before a decision is made.

On the whole, the plans look positive but removal of the lagoon pool in the new designs is a questionable decision for young kids at that key stage of gaining confidence in the water due to its gradual depth. Personal opinion however!

Foodies Festival 2026 Dates Announced

🍜 Back for its 21st birthday, food lovers, music fans and families can enjoy three days of food, live music and activities when Foodies Festival returns to Preston Park, Brighton, from 2–4 May 2026. The festival promises its biggest year yet with new attractions, headline acts, star chefs and strong local talent. Visitors can see live cooking and baking demos from TV and local chefs, plus take part in tastings, kids’ cookery, wellbeing activities and dog-friendly fun. Evening music on the main stage features touring headliners Scouting for Girls, Boyzlife (Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy) and B*Witched (remember them :), alongside local bands and choirs. Things Looking Up for i360

🍩 Brighton i360 has marked its first year under hospitality group Nightcap PLC with a celebratory event on 8 March, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Guests, partners and local press enjoyed a relaxed gathering in the glass pod, complete with sparkling wine, panoramic views and a bespoke cake by Brighton pâtissier Julien Plumart. Nightcap CEO Sarah Willingham spoke about women in business and outlined ambitions for the i360’s future.

Since Nightcap’s takeover in early 2024, the seafront tower has evolved from a simple viewing platform into a more versatile venue, expanding its offer to include private hires, dining experiences, wellness sessions and events. This shift positions the i360 as both a landmark attraction and an increasingly dynamic hospitality and events space. Great to see things turning around for the i360 and remember if you live in BN1, BN2, BN3 or BN41 you’re entitled to the £5 locals ticket (£2.50 for kids), so take your friends and support the donut. Priscilla Comes to Brighton

💃🏻 Priscilla Queen of the Desert, based on the 1994 Oscar-winning film, comes to Theatre Royal Brighton from June 16–20. The musical follows three friends travelling across the Australian outback on a battered bus named Priscilla, as they aim to deliver the performance of a lifetime. Featuring Kevin Clifton (Strictly Come Dancing) and Adèle Anderson (Fascinating Aïda), the UK and Ireland tour showcases dazzling costumes by Vicky Gill, famed for her work on Strictly.

Packed with 80s and 90s disco anthems such as Hot Stuff, It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the show blends humour, heart, and flamboyant choreography. At its core, it celebrates self-acceptance, diversity, and friendship, inviting audiences into an inclusive world where authenticity and unity triumph. We Have Lift-Off at the RSCH Helipad

🚁 The Royal Sussex County Hospital’s rooftop helipad, eight years behind schedule, is finally ready to receive patients after extensive safety upgrades to the Thomas Kemp tower. Recent successful test flights, including a full patient simulation, mean air ambulances can now land directly on the hospital, speeding up care for major trauma, cardiac, and stroke patients as part of the Sussex Major Trauma Network.

Hospital chief executive Dr Andy Heeps praised the complex, multidisciplinary effort involved. Air Ambulance Charity KSS said the helipad will significantly improve survival chances by cutting critical minutes from transfer times. The £1.9 million HELP Appeal donation funded much of the project, including a Deck Integrated Fire Fighting System that can extinguish fires within 15 seconds. The helipad is now one of only eight in the country with this advanced safety technology. Well done all involved!

🤘 The Great Escape is teaming up with NME to bring Brighton-born indie heroes The Kooks back for a special 20th Anniversary Spotlight Show at TGE Beach on Wednesday 13 May 2026, marking 20 years since both the festival and the band’s debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’.

The show celebrates the album that gave us classics like ‘Naïve’ and ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’, with support from Irish/Cornish five-piece Girl In The Year Above. Royal Pavilion Garden Restoration Project 

🪏 Brighton & Hove Museums has put up a bold new hoarding on New Road, the first visible sign that the Royal Pavilion Garden restoration is stepping up a gear. It marks months of behind-the-scenes planning, community consultation and fundraising, backed by £4.37m from The National Lottery Heritage Fund plus support from the council and the Wolfson Foundation.

The project will restore historic landscaping, protect rare planting (including much‑loved elms), improve accessibility, add learning resources and boost visitor engagement. Homegrown Music Festival 2026

🎸 Grassroots venues, bands and fans in Brighton are basically a three-way life support system: each needs the others to thrive. Bands draw fans, venues draw bands, fans return to venues – and that’s how a proper music community is born and kept alive.

Brighton isn’t “lucky” to have this in abundance; it’s the result of graft, care and sheer love of DIY music. From sweaty dive bars to cosy attics, there’s always something loud, new or beautiful spilling onto the streets, inspiring the next wave.

Because the city’s venues are packed into walking distance, you get the intimacy of a village scene with the quality of a big city. Homegrown Festival, on the 11th April spread across nine beloved venues, is a celebration of this tightly knit, gloriously noisy ecosystem. Tickets

Father Launches ‘Rare People’ Research Charity

🩻 Brighton A&E consultant Professor Rob Galloway has launched a new medical research charity, Rare People – The Research Charity, inspired by his two-year-old daughter Frankie’s diagnosis with DeSanto-Shinawi (DESSH), an ultra-rare neurodevelopmental condition with no known cure.

After AI helped identify a promising repurposed drug, Galloway set up Rare People to fund rigorous clinical trials for DESSH and other rare diseases that would otherwise never happen. All running costs are covered by the founders and trustees, so every donation goes directly to research.

The charity’s launch fundraiser at Rockwater in Hove featured scientists, families, Brighton and Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom, head coach Fabian Hürzeler and several players, raising tens of thousands of pounds and marking the start of a Brighton-born initiative with global ambitions. Brighton Gears Up For International Women’s Day Celebration

👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 Brighton & Hove is gearing up for a lively International Women’s Day weekend in 2026, with celebrations starting on Saturday 7 March. The main event is the Network of International Women’s annual gathering at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road, from 11am to 4pm.

It’ll bring together local groups focused on empowering women, with live music, international food, children’s activities and plenty of chances to meet community organisations supporting women’s rights and wellbeing. Everyone’s welcome to drop in throughout the day. 👏
