Season 1 Finale: Why the Narrow Path Is Worth It

In the season one finale of “Walking the Narrow Path,” Efrain and Fernie thank listeners, reflect on feedback, and take a short break before season two. They revisit what it means to keep walking the narrow path—following Jesus and doing God’s will—acknowledging it is difficult, unclear, and often only lit one step at a time (Psalm 119:105). They discuss why God doesn’t reveal the full path: to grow faith and because knowing the hardships might stop people from continuing, using David and Paul as examples of preparation. They address worry and anxiety, including personal experiences, emphasizing trust, identity in God rather than roles, endurance (Hebrews 12), shedding sin, and diligence over excellence. They encourage “showing up,” taking imperfect action, and trusting God with impact, share how starting the podcast tested their faith, cite John 6:66–69, and announce season two will begin with relationships and marriage.

00:00 Season Finale Kickoff

01:51 Why Stay Narrow

04:00 Not Alone on the Road

04:32 Lamp for Next Step

05:59 Why God Hides Map

06:32 Worry Anxiety and Faith

12:18 Personal Anxiety Journey

16:55 Identity Beyond Titles

24:29 Endurance and Growth

26:33 Drop the Weight of Sin

28:13 Closed Doors Shape You

29:53 Unexpected New Dreams

30:42 Never Too Late

32:07 Fatherhood Changed Me

33:18 Preparation Not Speed

34:23 Diligence Over Excellence

36:39 Show Up For Others

40:17 Narrow Path Podcast Leap

46:21 Impact In God’s Hands

48:13 Jesus Makes It Worth It

50:41 Imperfect Action Closing

53:37 Season Two Preview

Serving With Humility: Serving From Love, Not Approval

In this episode of Walking the Narrow Path, Fernie and Efrain talk about what it really means to serve like Jesus.

Service is often misunderstood. Many people think serving means always saying yes, staying busy, volunteering more, or being available to everyone all the time. But biblical service is deeper than activity. It is not performance. It is not people-pleasing. It is not about being seen.

Real service flows from love, humility, obedience, wisdom, and identity in Christ.

Using John 13 as the anchor, this conversation looks at Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and how that moment redefines greatness. Jesus did not serve because He was insecure. He served from complete security. He knew who He was, where He came from, and where He was going — and from that place, He humbled Himself.

That changes how we understand service.

Service is not weakness.

Service is not image management.

Service is not being everyone’s doormat.

Service is strength shaped by humility.

In this episode, we also talk honestly about the difference between serving from love and serving from insecurity. Some yeses come from love, but some yeses come from guilt, fear, pressure, or the need to be accepted. Biblical service requires wisdom, not just availability.

We also discuss hidden service, serving through grief, serving when it costs comfort, and why God sees the acts of love that others may overlook.

In This Episode, We Talk About:

What people often misunderstand about service

Why service is not the same as people-pleasing

Jesus washing the disciples’ feet in John 13

Serving from identity instead of insecurity

Why hidden service still matters

How service can become performance

The danger of serving for applause or recognition

Why biblical service still needs boundaries

Serving through grief, weakness, and uncomfortable seasons

How small acts of love can carry more weight than we realize

Key Takeaways

Not every yes is service.

Some yeses come from love. Others come from guilt, fear, pressure, or the need to be accepted.

Jesus served from security, not insecurity.

The most secure person in the room became the servant in the room.

Serving for applause will drain you.

When recognition becomes the reward you need, your peace depends on people noticing.

Small acts matter.

Sometimes service is groceries, prayer, presence, listening, or simply showing up.

Biblical service includes boundaries.

Serving people is not the same as being controlled by people.

God sees what others miss.

Hidden obedience is still obedience.

Anchor Scripture

John 13:1–17

Jesus washes the disciples’ feet and shows that true greatness in the kingdom of God is shaped by humility, love, and service.

Supporting Scriptures

Mark 10:42–45 — The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.

Philippians 2:3–8 — Christ humbled Himself and took the form of a servant.

Galatians 5:13 — Serve one another humbly in love.

Colossians 3:23–24 — Serve as unto the Lord.

Reflection Question

Before you say yes again, ask yourself:

Am I serving from love, or am I serving from insecurity?

Listen and Subscribe

If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may be carrying service in a heavy or misunderstood way.

Subscribe to Walking the Narrow Path and listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, or your favorite podcast platform.

Read more and subscribe at:

walkingthenarrowpath.org

They focus on David’s “anointing versus appointing,” noting he was anointed as a teen but spent about 15 years as a fugitive while God developed his character and leadership, even by having him lead distressed and discontented men who later became his mighty men. They warn against “picking the lock” by forcing opportunities out of impatience, desperation, or control, and stress staying in God’s word rather than relying on “social media Christianity.” Practical responses include serving, prayer, tuning the heart, and cultivating gratitude and contentment.

• 1 Samuel 16 (David anointed by Samuel)

• 1 Samuel 17 (David and Goliath)

• 1 Samuel 18–24 (Saul’s jealousy; David’s flight/wilderness/cave seasons)

• 1 Samuel 22:1–2

• Psalm 40 ("Patiently I waited upon the Lord…")

• Jeremiah 17 (the heart is deceitful)

• 2 Samuel 11 (David and Bathsheba; “time when kings go out to battle”)

• 2 Samuel 23 (David’s mighty men)

• 1 Chronicles 11 (parallel account of David’s mighty men)

00:00 Welcome Back Setup

00:54 Closed Doors Waiting

01:21 Patio Hornets Lesson

03:08 Surviving The Hallway

04:10 Evolving Through Work

05:20 David Anointed Not Appointed

08:58 Leading The Misfits

14:20 Messy Middle Growth

21:31 Silence Uncertainty Desperation

26:30 Social Media Christianity

31:46 Picking The Lock

33:19 Heidi Post Teaser

33:50 Through the Fire

34:28 Panic and Forced Doors

35:52 Grass Seeds and Patience

38:39 Waiting With Purpose

39:59 Heart Check in Silence

43:19 Stay Talking to God

48:18 Gratitude and Contentment

57:12 Purpose in the Process

58:42 Final Takeaways and Prayer

Fernie and Efrain discuss how “open doors” and “closed doors” relate to God’s sovereignty, emphasizing that tomorrow’s opportunities depend on today’s obedience and that closed doors can be protective blessings, not just disappointments. They connect obedience to the posture of the heart, using Abraham’s call to leave without full direction as an example of radical obedience bringing radical blessing, and note that promises may not be fulfilled in one’s lifetime. They share personal examples, including leaving a secure job, closing a church, starting a business without money, and missed promotions that later proved beneficial. They address hardship, spiritual opposition, pride, worship as recentering, and trusting God for outcomes, citing passages such as Revelation 3 and 2 Corinthians 5:7, and conclude that miracles often follow obedience and faith acts without full clarity.

00:00 Boots on Ground Intro

00:24 Podcast Welcome Back

01:29 Open and Closed Doors

02:40 Quote on Obedience

04:13 Abraham Radical Obedience

06:19 Heart Posture Obedience

09:41 Personal Radical Steps

13:18 What Is an Open Door

18:43 Hardship and Opposition

21:44 Worship in the Battle

27:16 God Holds the Keys

31:35 Pride Closes Doors

36:02 Blessing of Closed Doors

37:35 Preparation and Trust

39:15 Guidance and Jonah

39:40 Jonah and Heart Posture

40:11 God Knows My Heart

41:09 Yoke Easy Burden Light

42:58 Open and Closed Doors

44:58 Tantrums and Trust

46:44 Obedience Opens Doors

48:13 Bowling Jealousy Test

52:52 Recenter Through Worship

54:53 Closed Doors Protect You

56:15 Four Antidotes for Fight

01:00:07 Provision Pride and Gratitude

01:07:26 Obey and Leave Outcome

01:10:45 Final Takeaways and Thanks

Scriptures Explicitly Mentioned

Holding Plans with Open Hands: Trusting God’s Sovereignty Through Life’s Seasons

In episode four of “Walking the Narrow Path,” Efrian and Fernie thank listeners for the podcast’s reception and discuss navigating life’s changing seasons by holding plans with open hands and trusting God’s sovereignty. They explore why people crave control and predictability, how disruptions produce anxiety, and how hardship can be used for growth when believers submit their will to God’s. Fernie shares recent storms—career change, family losses, and his brother’s death—and how relying on Scripture, faith community, and avoiding unhealthy coping helped him endure, including the joy of his brother returning to God before passing. They emphasize relationship over religious rules, asking “what does the Bible say,” and cite Proverbs 16:9, James 4:13–15, Joshua 1:9, and Psalm 27 about God directing steps, courage, and trusting God’s goodness. They encourage seeking God’s help to trust, extending grace to others, and leaving listener comments and testimonies.

00:00 Faith Beyond Highlights

01:20 Episode Welcome Updates

02:04 Plans In Open Hands

02:53 Seasons And Uncertainty

04:56 Why We Need Control

07:45 Storms And Testimony

10:31 Relationship Over Rules

13:19 Scripture On Planning

15:17 Defining Gods Sovereignty

21:41 Closed Doors Lessons

25:19 Courage And Joshua

28:50 Walking by Faith

29:46 Gods Strategic Plan

30:31 Lean Into Fear

32:36 Goodness in Trials

34:27 Hard Way Lessons

38:07 Tools for the Storm

41:33 Patience in Process

44:40 Legacy and Influence

49:55 Ask God for Help

51:35 Closing and Feedback

Join the Community!

If you enjoyed this episode of Walking The Narrow Path, please follow us on your favorite podcast app and leave a review.

In episode three of Walking the Narrow Path, Rein and Ferny shift from the calling of character to the calling of what God asks people to do, emphasizing that purpose can change by season and includes multiple roles (spouse, parent, worker), not just ministry. They discuss the danger of tying identity to one role, using examples of a pastor’s father, a church that closed, and how serving others in any vocation can honor God. They stress that God primarily speaks through Scripture and godly counsel, but people often “skip the commercial” by staying too busy or focusing on negativity. Biblical examples (Joseph, Joseph and Mary, Jacob, Solomon) illustrate trusting God through hardship, recognizing God’s options beyond human expectations, and aligning with God’s heart for wisdom and true riches.

00:00 Purpose And Calling01:21 Seasons Of Purpose03:09 More Than Ministry05:31 Pastoring And Identity07:08 Singleness And Service09:20 God Equips The Called11:05 Stop Skipping God12:36 Reframing Failure17:03 Busyness And The Word21:51 Serving People Serves God24:12 Paycheck And Calling25:35 Storms And Rescue Story27:54 Serve Without Applause28:10 God's Plan Not Yours29:34 Your Story Is A Comma31:00 Seasons And Callings Shift32:41 Grief And Leaning In34:27 Joseph Trusts The Impossible38:48 Jacob And Hidden Purpose42:38 Joseph In The Cistern48:39 Solomon Wisdom Over Wealth51:27 Riches Beyond Money53:46 Closing And Where To Find Us

Join the Community!

If you enjoyed this episode of Walking The Narrow Path, please follow us on your favorite podcast app and leave a review.

Understanding Calling Beyond Ministry: Character, Trust, and God’s Guidance

In episode two of “Walking the Narrow Path with Fernie and Efrain” the hosts continue their discussion on Christian “callings,” focusing on common misconceptions that calling only means full-time or church ministry. They explain that calling includes who you are, what you do, and how you do it, encompassing roles like father, husband, friend, and teacher. Using Ephesians 4:1–3 and 2 Timothy 1:9, they emphasize a shared calling to salvation and holy living expressed through humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, peace, grace, and mercy. They discuss how people often expect a grand sign for direction, contrasting this with God’s guidance to Abram to start moving in faith while God reveals the way over time. The conversation highlights the need to align personal desires with God’s will, avoid misusing Christian clichés, and recognize that God’s voice is found in His Word and a lived relationship, not mere church attendance. They address the importance of giving oneself grace, being teachable, and allowing God’s preparation process—described as being “broken down” and rebuilt like military basic training—to shape character for greater usefulness. They also stress prioritizing family as a primary responsibility, noting how imbalance in ministry can lead to neglect and harm. Fernie shares a personal example of a career change and pursuing a master’s degree through VA benefits, describing how God guided him internally by opening and closing doors. The episode ends with an invitation for listeners to share feedback, questions, and testimonies so future conversations can address real struggles, with the hosts stating their aim is to serve and glorify God while helping others walk the narrow path.

00:00 Welcome Back: Picking Up the Conversation on Calling

01:01 Calling Isn’t Just Church Ministry: Clearing Up the Misconception

02:04 Three Layers of Calling: Who You Are, What You Do, How You Do It

03:54 Start Walking: How God Guides Without a “Celestial GPS”

06:05 The Shared Calling: Salvation, Holiness, and Everyday Character

08:48 Grace & Peace: You Can’t Give What You Don’t Have

11:33 Culture vs. Kingdom: Self-Help Callings and Christian Clichés

15:14 Family First: Balancing Ministry, Marriage, and Priorities

19:40 Hearing God’s Voice: Scripture, Direction, and Career Change Testimony

23:05 The Process: Preparation, Breaking Down, and “Basic Training” for Your Calling

28:06 Free Will & Resisting the Holy Spirit

29:06 Humility, Teachable Spirit, and Avoiding Self-Made Storms

29:52 Practice Makes Progress: Sports Analogies for Spiritual Growth

31:06 Grief, Life Lessons, and Letting God Shape Character

32:48 Called to Obedience: Why God Won’t “Put You in the Game” Yet

36:16 Entitlement Culture vs. the Narrow Path

37:30 Church Attendance vs. Real Relationship: God Wants Your Heart

39:46 God’s Ultimate Commitment: The Cross & the First Calling

41:29 Grand Callings, Hidden Impact, and Doing It for God (Not Recognition)

44:57 Final Wrap-Up: Keep Learning, Listen for God’s Direction, and Stay Tuned

Join the Community!

If you enjoyed this episode of Walking The Narrow Path, please follow us on your favorite podcast app and leave a review.

Walking the Narrow Path: Why We Started This Podcast (Matthew 7:14)

In the first episode of "Walking the Narrow Path with Fernie & Efrain," Fernie and Efrain introduces the podcast’s purpose: real, coffee-talk style conversations about applying scripture to everyday life in a clear, layman way for people who find the Bible complex or hard to interpret. He introduces co-host Efrian and they share how the podcast came together quickly after a conversation, which they see as God’s timing and confirmation. Recording from El Paso, Texas, they explain the show’s title and foundational scripture, Matthew 7:14, discussing the narrow gate and difficult way that leads to life, and how modern culture often rejects absolute truth. They talk about distractions pulling people into “ditches,” the fear of judgment and condemnation from church culture, and emphasize that nothing is too big for God’s grace and love, while also clarifying the need for repentance and a soft, responsive heart. Efrain shares his background being raised in a Christian home with missionary parents, his own struggles and seasons where his heart was far from God, and stresses that Christianity is a relationship rather than a religion or “rewards program.” They discuss faith and belief using Hebrews 11 and Hebrews 6 (hope as an anchor), noting that trials can either strengthen or weaken faith depending on a person’s choices, and that walking the narrow path requires dependence on Jesus and the Holy Spirit, plus supportive community. Fernie shares testimony about losing his brother to cancer, leaning deeper into scripture during hardship, and experiencing God’s guidance through career uncertainty and what he views as divine intervention. They close by encouraging listeners not to quit too soon, inviting topic suggestions, urging people to see scripture as a story that helps navigate life.

00:00 Welcome to the Podcast + Meet the Co-Host (FRA)

01:15 Why We Started: Real Talk & Making Scripture Practical

04:08 Where We’re Recording: El Paso, Texas & Our Church Community

04:48 Why ‘Walking the Narrow Path’: Matthew 7:14 Explained

09:26 Distractions, Ditches, and Finding Your Way Back to God

14:34 Grace vs. Condemnation: Repentance and a Soft Heart

20:21 FRA’s Background: From Christian Home to Relationship Over Religion

25:53 Faith & Belief: Hebrews 11 and Trusting God When Life Hits Hard

31:51 Holding Onto Faith Through Loss: My Brother’s Story

33:08 When Life Gets Hard: Questioning God & Needing Community

34:10 Hope as the Anchor (Hebrews 6) — Weathering the Storm

38:05 Why Trials Strengthen Some and Break Others: The Choice

39:59 Narrow Road vs Broad Road: Distractions, Decisions, and Direction

44:04 Career Crossroads & Divine Timing: Trusting God’s Guidance

48:09 Open Hearts, Free Will, and Following God’s Will (Even When It’s Hard)

52:30 Discipline, Disappointment, and Being Prepared for Blessing

53:53 Why We Started This Podcast: Calling, Testimony, and What’s Next

01:00:38 Final Charge: Big God, Small Problems — Stay Strong & Don’t Quit

Join the Community!

If you enjoyed this episode of Walking The Narrow Path, please follow us on your favorite podcast app and leave a review.
